Follow me on twitter. The announcements there seem more reliable. I rarely post stuff non video related either so dont worry about spam about what I had for breakfast :) Maybe the occasional retweet or random thought, but not many compared to most (I think).
Nice Gopher, you already had my respect, you just went way up again! It's nice to see you recognize those types of problems that can come with the mods. whoever, people should be aware that they are still mods, and it'll always have at least a tiny risk. Finally, thank you for all you do, continue!
High risk mods tend to be ones that alter the main world space from what I can see. So things that add objects/buildings to Skyrims outside, or change the way NPCs spawn and path around the world are probably the highest risk. Again, I am not saying you should not use them, but be aware that uninstalling those mods might be a problem for your save game and they may cause instability.
Gopher, Love the way you approached this. Not all people would be willing to admit if they said or did something wrong. This is one of the good reasons I prefer seeing if you've covered a mod I want to install. Don't avoid covering mods like this please. If anything, make sure you mention risks that mods like this bring and/or clarify whether or not you use them. The best way to tell a good mod from others is whether or not my favorite mod reviewer has covered it or is using it.
The immersion mods are what I would consider low risk, but they are script heavy and they are the sort of mods that might give you trouble on a weak system or if you push uGridsToLoad to far. I classify them as must have mods though so for me the risk is worth it. ENB mods are the same as texture mods. As far as I know they cannot hurt your save game, and if your system shows problems running them, you can uninstall them without much risk. Maybe a tiny risk if they have an ESP included.
noodlepie you actually thought about the feedback you got, you looked into it and realised that they had a point and therefor you made a new video explaining and doing it better! really good job gopher! i cant wait for richard chapter 4!! :D
I'm glad you stressed this, Gopher. I pushed my own grid level a while back with impressive results, only to corrupt my save files around the 60th hour(which I have read is about par for the course on this issue). Those who get away with it are far and few in between, as their reports lounge in the vast shade of the summit of horror stories that exist in their contrast. Bethesda should make a game engine that could possibly load more grids, but they simply haven't yet.
No. Mods that add armor, weapons etc are pretty damned safe, although of course if they add the to level lists there is a tiny risk. I would not give that much worry though. And texture replacers are completely safe for your save. Obviously you may hurt performance or cause instability if you are using too many very high resolution textures, but you can uninstall them at any time and your save game will be fine.
For the record, ugridstoload 23 would basically load all of skyrim at once. There is basically no difference between 23 and 9999999999999 (or whatever the maximum value the code will accept). It's rather likely that the game engine itself would crash even if Picard tries to install Skyrim on the Enterprise and turn ugrids to 23.
I know a little, but actually weapons are something I have not touched. I mostly worked with armors, and there are some differences in rigging them I believe. And to be honest even with armors i am a hacky amateur who just kind of figured it out as he went along.
all i ever hear every where is ugrids are no no.. I did it once and I never recovered from it.. had to install my game Backup again.. we appreciate the honesty of your work Gopher
Hypothetically that would depend on where you are standing because it loads a certain radius length around you, so if you are in Riften it would be a lot more than if you were in the middle if the map.
I find that the Stable uGridsToLoad mod is useful for other reasons. Even leaving uGrids at 5, I've noticed a major reduction in CTD's on loading areas with lots of stuff going on. Again, this could just be my specific modded game, with my system hardware and my character, but I've found it's good for stabilizing the loading of cells more than allowing you to crank it way the heck up.
Oh no i was not saying you always do, it is just nice to hear. That and the fact you have a really lovely voice. That and your accent is just lovely. Just listening to your voice is soothing. :P
The Falkreath Bermuda triangle crash was caused by the Scenic Carriages mod. And, you have to make a new character to fix it- no solutions. Also this is confirmed. So to anyone who is having or has had this issue(as I and many others have) I hope you'll see this.
Gopher love the vids man! You should start a short "Essential mods" series for skyrim. As a semi-beginner at modding I think it would be nice to know what YOU think i should start out with
I have been using Touring Carriages for my entire new playthrough which is reaching 30+ hours and thoroughly enjoy it. Not to mention I have not had a single problem with it. It adds a nice touch to the game, and i think Richards horse could use a break every now and then,. ;)
I've been using it ever since I made my current character. I've never had any CTD similar to the one Scenic Carriages was giving me. So I'd say it's perfectly useable :)
I've used to play with Grids at 9 It was set at about 20 hours in my playthrough, I didn't have problems for the next 100 hours. After that, game was crashing to desktop in woods around Riften. Simply wandering around that area caused a crash. Luckily, lowering grids fixed this problem. Nowadays, I'm keeping my Grids at 7. It was set from the very start, and for 80 hours of play time, so far I didn't have a crash. I don't use many mods though (10-12), and I'm aware that this tweak is dangerous.
Gopher your videos have help me have a better experience with Skyrim. So I'm glad that you addressed this issue very nicely. BTW are you hinting that Stiv Gro Fur is coming back? ;)
That had to me when I first started playing Skyrim. I had forgot that I had changed my ugridstoload earlier on and had steadily kept adding mods overtime. Now, I just keep it at 5 and use a bunch of LoD mods and whatnot. Ewi's ini files are great and almost mimic ugridstoload 7 when they are only 5 with its tweaks.
Hmm I'm sure I don't watch as thoroughly as some here, but I'm sure i remember an early (2nd series) of Steve's play through where you did think about changing the U-grids. I'm sure it's nothing, there have been a lot of videos
Just don't apologize too hard for people's lost saves, because the majority of mods out there recommend backing up your save before installing anyway, so it should be a regular practice when modding and tweaking your game to have backups.
Thank you for your warning. I'm running about 120 mods and i was thinking about set ugrittoload to 7 but now i will leave it on 5 because i think the risk to crash my save with all these mods is to high. Luckily i watched this great video right after ur first video about ugrittoload. TY
Might have to do with having too many textures and such that it's trying to load in. If it loads more into your VRAM than you have available it can cause instability, which may include infinite loading screens.
So I suppose you could say that Stable uGridsToLoad is a great screenshot taking tool, then, but if you want to use it for things other than just taking screenshots (like actually playing a character with it) then you have to be very very careful.
I had that problem way back when. All I did was uninstall it (after some troubleshooting uninstalling other mods) and I was able to continue. I must have been lucky to get out of that.
Hey Gopher, how about a new series for mods like this? Skyrim Mod Test Lab? Something that lets people know by the name that it's a prototype, testing, slightly riskier mod to install and/or use. Make for tinkerers and people who want to try new things, but don't care about the risks as much. Maybe Skyrim Mod Sanctuary could be for stable, easier mods to install and/or use. =)
This was exactly my issue - random crashing forgetting that I had ugridstoload @ 7 mainly because the game ran at 60fps & didn't struggle. So it's a resource issue, probably with the 3.1Gb limit.
Respect! Maybe after this u shld like put a warning intro ie "modding can ruin yr game if u dont really know what yre doing." n put the risk level of the mod so that u wont hv to go through the trouble of always in need to explain every risk of the mods. I get it that yre helping modders n dont want to scare off people from modding but i think with yr modding for beginners series are already sufficient enough to help a lot of noob modders like me ;) really appreciate the effort bro!
messing with the ugrids ini on fall out NV creates issues the same way and i thought it was all the mods messing my loading time and crashing randomly with quests being complete.
you say the ugrids only last as long until you close the game, does it matter if you save the game or not? so if i play with ugrids 7 and save with this mod, will this mod prevent that from getting into my save oorr?
Hey Gopher, do you happen to know anything about 3d modeling, like make weapons for the game? just curious, since you are a true Dovahkiin! thanks! love you videos by the way!
3:30 I had the same problem, in the EXACT same location!!! CTD when entering the Falkreath area!!! This problem actually seems rather common, there're several forums about it, but no solution has been found. I lost a 120 hours character :(
might it acctually help performance and stability to put my uGrids to something like 3? i know its not gonna look nice but couldnt it be helpfull in some cases? or is it just gonna make it worse by changing something?
Gopher, it sounds to me liek UGridsToLoad depends heavily on CPU and GPU performance. In other words, more powerful systems can have higher UGridsToLoad, whilst lower-end systems may only be able to run stock. And also, like you said, more mods may weigh more heavily on your CPU or GPU usage. So maybe "adapt your mods for your current system" is the message?
Although you can't recover Stiv, would creating a similar save game using console commands to match up his quests, skills, and perks work? I'm guessing you already considered it and deemed it too time consuming, but you never know.... At least we can look forward to Richard's adventures. =)
Just saying, im pretty sure somebody was trying to rebuild it at one point with nearly no mods, not necessarily perfect and i haven't heard about him in a LONG while but its something to look around about.
If you haven't tried it yet, the Skyrim Save Cleaner can recover some corrupted saves. It worked for me a couple of times. skyrim. nexusmods. com /mods/31724
I'm not really sure how you'd even be able to have two ENBs at the same time. To my knowledge that is not possible as they are all configs for one specific "hack" of sorts of the game engine. Other mods: as Gopher said they are all dangerous in potential, however texture mods are less dangerous in that they won't damage your save. Mods that add scripts can be a little worse because you can get problems from uninstalling them as well as if the scripts are wrong or just the vanilla game is bugged.
Does anyone know how to get rid of the grass flicker? It's kind of hard to explain but when the grass gets blown by the wind the tips seem to flicker some. I don't see that in his videos and was wondering if someone could suggest a solution. Oh and BTW I don't have Ambient Occlusion turned on, I've heard that can cause the flicker as well. Thanks.
it's kinda to bad there isn't a map mod that allows you to mark area's of the map : / if you heavy in to modding (150+ mods) your skyrim/new vegas/fo3 or even oblivion inevitably some area's of the map become crash zone's (i know of 2 that increase frequency in my current setup but haven't found one that reliably crashes yet).
Yes, you're going to have some performance boost but it would be minimal(like, 3~4fps). And can make some quests bug, or events not happening as it should. I recommend not doing it.
you release alot of tension in the gpu by having NO AntiAliasing and activating at FXAA at advanced options... then use a performance version of ENB...they have their own settings and they are as best as they can be for their version
Thanks and, just to be sure, would it be completely safe if I change uGridsToLoad with the mod, in the console, every time I start to play (maybe using a .bat file for making it easy), saving the game and all, but never changing it permanently in the .ini file? Would that take out the risk of changing uGridsToLoad? Sorry if I bother.
That's why I'm not suggesting people to use this tweak, unless they really want to or need to. Problem with this tweak is that you can't properly test it, because, issues may occur instantly, or worse, much later in your playthrough. Risky stuff indeed. I have a question though: What you did to your shadows? They look rather great! Looking into description for visual mods used in the video, I don't see any linked to the shadows. Is that an ENB mod or something to do with Project Reality?
Gopher, I think you didn't make anything wrong in that video. Perhaps in the beggining of the video, you could explain what ugrids is, and then, explain what the mod does. You did that, but did not explain well the part of ugridss and perhaps some people get confused. Btw, don't avoid making videos because things like these. I really liked that mod.
Hey Gopher If you can please answer that would be great, but do you know the main reason that can cause stutters? Mine are movement stutters and when distance Textures load. I use RealVision ENB Performance, quite a few Texture Mods (most are at 1k and 2k) and my System is i7 2600 @ 3.4GHZ, 8GB Ram, GTX 670 4GB. My uGrids are 5 which is the default I think, if you can answer that be great :-D
Cry for help: I'm getting CTD and i've tried setting audio to 4100,Boss mod order,Tes5edit clean,reinstall.. uninstall of my few mods.. nothing works.I'm getting CTD sometimes outdoors and sometimes when I go into the perk screen.
Hi All, I have some problem with my subscription to this channel. For some reason, I don't receive the updates anymore. I got this for this video and the last NV let's play + mod talk. I did receive the update for ENB 4 Revised though. Is anybody else having the same issue? Or have any advice on how to fix it ? Thanks
In every game Ive tried to set graphics through ##prefs.ini. There are lots of advantages for player with baaaad PC(intel duo) like disabling vsync, etc... U can set what u want to see and what u dont. The only problem were these "ugridstoload". It was very unstable. This mod solves the problem. However, its not the only line that sets LOD quality. There is a nice guide on Nexus about these "cells to load" and solving the problem with lack of memory. sry for eng.
Hi Gopher, i too have GeForce GTX 670 and similar amount of visual enhancement mods installed, so what is you uGridToLoad value? Mine is 9, with 11+ i get crashes, is it possible to push it up to at least 11 without crashes, with some mods maybe?
Gopher please answer. If i install mods that add new armors, backpacks all that stuff and texture replaces, all your immersion mods that you showed in you immersion videos is it dangerous to mod Skyrim to that state. Two enb mods? Is it dangerous?
Gopher i love you videos ,but with this mod we fucked up...We as you saying yeayah do it and me as listening...So i played with stableugrid, then after a while i removed it since i did not use it...There was only one problem....everytime i go to a room and wall textures flicker/disappear.....Any ideas for fixing this?
Gopher, it was very honorable of you to make this vid and offer the explanation you made, thumbs up
Follow me on twitter. The announcements there seem more reliable. I rarely post stuff non video related either so dont worry about spam about what I had for breakfast :) Maybe the occasional retweet or random thought, but not many compared to most (I think).
Gopher, you're quite possibly the most humble and awesome RUclipsr/ModMakers out there. Thanks for the Encore. It was very informative.
Nice Gopher, you already had my respect, you just went way up again!
It's nice to see you recognize those types of problems that can come with the mods. whoever, people should be aware that they are still mods, and it'll always have at least a tiny risk. Finally, thank you for all you do, continue!

Just in time, was literally about to load up Skyrim! Awesome videos as always Gopher, you're the best on RUclips! :)
I'm glad you stressed this, Gopher. I pushed my own grid level a while back with impressive results, only to corrupt my save files around the 60th hour(which I have read is about par for the course on this issue). Imagine 10 years down the road when we can play in 8K HD and have ugrids to load 23.
The engine wouldn't let that.
For the record, ugridstoload 23 would basically load all of skyrim at once. There is basically no difference between 23 and 9999999999999 (or whatever the maximum value the code will accept).
It's rather likely that the game engine itself would crash even if Picard tries to install Skyrim on the Enterprise and turn ugrids to 23.
anything is possible, just the matter of time !!
Well, we only have 3 yrs to wait for that. the new SE engine might help
I know a little, but actually weapons are something I have not touched. I mostly worked with armors, and there are some differences in rigging them I believe. And to be honest even with armors i am a hacky amateur who just kind of figured it out as he went along.
The consensus seems to be Scenic Carriages.
all i ever hear every where is ugrids are no no.. I did it once and I never recovered from it.. had to install my game Backup again.. we appreciate the honesty of your work Gopher
Don't worry too much mate. Everyone makes mistakes. Plus, you did warn people pretty well.
Hypothetically that would depend on where you are standing because it loads a certain radius length around you, so if you are in Riften it would be a lot more than if you were in the middle if the map.
Please do a video on shadows, soon. :) Thanks for another great video. I've learned I don't need to be messing with this setting, at this juncture.
Phinex ENB without Ambient Occlusion but with Dynavision.
Ok, that sounds reasonable. How about the new Touring Carriages?
I find that the Stable uGridsToLoad mod is useful for other reasons. Even leaving uGrids at 5, I've noticed a major reduction in CTD's on loading areas with lots of stuff going on. Again, this could just be my specific modded game, with my system hardware and my character, but I've found it's good for stabilizing the loading of cells more than allowing you to crank it way the heck up.
Oh no i was not saying you always do, it is just nice to hear. That and the fact you have a really lovely voice. That and your accent is just lovely. Just listening to your voice is soothing. :P
That's soooo upsetting. I wept when you said Stiv wouldn't return. :(
Can't wait for Richard to hit the scene again though :)
The Falkreath Bermuda triangle crash was caused by the Scenic Carriages mod. And, you have to make a new character to fix it- no solutions. Also this is confirmed. So to anyone who is having or has had this issue(as I and many others have) I hope you'll see this.
I'd also like to add that I've played on a couple different characters at this point while using Touring Carriages with no issues.

I do not no why people skip these. They explain alot
Nice of you to upload this Gopher. You're a gentleman and a scholar.
Did you ever figure out what happened to Stiv's saves?
Might have to do with having too many textures and such that it's trying to load in. If it loads more into your VRAM than you have available it can cause instability, which may include infinite loading screens.
I think he's using the mods surrounding realvision ENB (climates, realistic lighting etc), but not the ENB itself
What the... ''...and as always, have fun!'' the usual ending line was missing?!?!
Do I usually do that on the encore videos too? Been a while since I did one :)
So I suppose you could say that Stable uGridsToLoad is a great screenshot taking tool, then, but if you want to use it for things other than just taking screenshots (like actually playing a character with it) then you have to be very very careful.
I think I'm going to make this my motto.
No, from what I can see it is not recoverable.
That's what we thought about Skyrim before it was released.
I think he wears that circlet for the archery buff.
I had that problem way back when. All I did was uninstall it (after some troubleshooting uninstalling other mods) and I was able to continue. I must have been lucky to get out of that.

Wow gopher that was very humble but do you mind covering smart cast
Respect! I don't remember anymore, but for exemple removing an npc that was added because of a mod should not corrupt things like some quest or anything
messing with the ugrids ini on fall out NV creates issues the same way and i thought it was all the mods messing my loading time and crashing randomly with quests being complete.
He means Phinix Natural ENB.
Tried that one. It's definitely an improvement over the previous installment but it has some weird functionality issues from what I've seen.
Did you ever think you'd get to part 76, Gopher?
just delete the save if its screwed up its not that bad of a thing to lose or backup your saves
More skyrim let's play
you say the ugrids only last as long until you close the game, does it matter if you save the game or not? so if i play with ugrids 7 and save with this mod, will this mod prevent that from getting into my save oorr?

I avoid changing my uGrids the same way I avoid disease, keeping distance and I might stay stable.
Gopher , I like dynavision but I cant get it looking like you have.
Could you post your dynavision settings maybe ?
If you haven't tried it yet, the Skyrim Save Cleaner can recover some corrupted saves. It worked for me a couple of times. skyrim. nexusmods. com /mods/31724
This is done with INI tweaks not an ENB :)

Do problems only occur if Ugrid is changed from default? or can issues still occur.
I tried setting u=9 and the game just crashed. Setting it to 7 seemed ok for a while, then it crashed.
Hey Gopher
If you can please answer that would be great, but do you know the main reason that can cause stutters?

Hi All,
I have some problem with my subscription to this channel.
Is it safe to assume that this lesson applies to shifting the uGridsToLoad down instead of up as well?
Gopher please answer. If i install mods that add new armors, backpacks all that stuff and texture replaces, all your immersion mods that you showed in you immersion videos is it dangerous to mod Skyrim to that state. Two enb mods? Is it dangerous?
Believe he is using RealVision ENB.
