Even though I'm not playing Skyrim at the moment and haven't for quite a while, I still like to watch your videos and see whats going on. They are just always so darn well done.
+Zachary Mollohan I know I'm 2 years late lol, but anything past 21 is loading the entire game at once. It's possible now, but will cause CTDs in seconds due to every single enemy noticing you at once, every single random event happening at the same time, and the graphics from the entire province being loaded.
I must say, out of all the mod helper/guidesman/spotlight people on RUclips, I find you the most helpful due to your detail and how well spoken you are. I cannot conceive of a reason to ever unsub from you.
Thanks Gopher for all your mod talk videos! I always check your channel when I have a issue and so far I've always found the solution, not to mention new interesting mods to test out.
I cant recommend either way. It is a mod that will require a lot of testing. I made this video just to let people know what the mod does and will have to let them decide. Increasing uGridsToLoad makes the game look a lot better, but before this mod it had risks. Have those risks gone? Only time will tell for sure, but it does look like it is now safe to do it.
Gopher it's videos like this that remind me just how awesome you are. I love that you take the time to SHOW what happens when things are done one way or another. Your videos are so clear and precise. Thank you so much for spending your time to make these. You're amazing!
The game would freeze. For a brief moment you could witness the awesomeness of such a large number of ugrids. Then everything starts to fade into a deep red and becomes distorted. Then you hear a distant scream from a woman then a malevolent chuckle as a white humanoid figure with red eyes appear in front of your character. He extends an arm and as his hand is about to to seemly touch your whole screen, the game crashes and wipes your Skyrim folder clean. That, my friend, is what would happen.
Yes. I took a chance and stepped outside my Razer obsession and did not regret it. Perhaps the best mouse I have ever used actually. I got used to using it within minutes (although it took 3 hours to customize it perfectly to my hands).
Gopher you are so underrated; the amount of effort and care you put into your videos are admirable and you deserve WAY more subs! Love watching 'em, keep up the good work :)
Right now I'm am watching you and Brodual. I can't pick favourites, but actually you two ARE my favourites. I am just searching for mods because I can't play skyrim again until Christmas. My friend is making me a $1200 gaming computer with $650 worth of parts but I need to wait for the money. Until then, it's great to see mods I want to use! :D
Impossible to say. Honestly I got a kick out of them all. Even Freddy in Vampires :) I would have to say it was even between Stiv and Richard right now, but that may just be the sheer length of time I have played them.
Oh and "High Quality 3D Map" is another good one. Paired with "A Quality World Map" makes your map look extremely clear, you can almost make out roads inside of Whiterun.
Have wanted to mention this before, but I kept forgetting. As you are such a fan of immersion you should try these 2 mods: Improved Horse Step Sounds and Clanking Armour, once they are installed you really feel they should have been there all along. Don't know if you know or use them, but just thought I would get it out while I remembered.
It is not essential as far as I know, but increasing it might smooth out your frame rate, and will possibly help with stutters. But it will probably also add a little more strain to your memory and put you closer to the 3.1gb limit, although don't quote me on that as it is just an educated guess.
The mod description is somewhat short and vague and can be interpreted a number of different ways. But it is possible some people find it allows them to go higher, but for me 7 was the highest regardless of the mod or not.
(part 2) With Ugrids to 7 or 9 it could begin when you're still so far away that you won't even see it and when you arrive at the place where it happened you'll just find the dead giant and the companions on their way back to the city or even already gone. So what it means is that you may miss some events or quests so you really have to be carefull with that setting it's not just a visual feature.
Probably because we get too many such mails to answer even 1% of them. Best to post questions on these pages as 99% of the time someone else can help you as well as I can and often I pay more attention to the comments than to messages.
(part 1) You forgot to mention a very important effect of changing UgridToLoad settings, more than the visual effect in my opinion. that setting represent the radius around you in which the game will actually "run" as in events will happen. If you enlarge it (ugrid from 5 to 7 or 9) then events are happening further away and you may miss some of them because they're finished before you even reach them. One good example is the companions fighting the giant near whiterun when you first go there
Heh, I was going to suggest using Static DoF on Dynavision to sort out the pop-in issue. I do that, and once the blur is high enough you hardly notice any pop-in. And since I usually play Skyrim in 3rd person view the static DoF works better than dynamic anyway (enough DoF to give me a sense of depth and distance, and focus doesn't end up drifting to odd places, like my butt). Great coverage on the mod. Cheers.
Thank you so much for showing this! My current playthrough is a little unstable and I've been wanting to go back to 5 grids instead of uninstalling mods. Cheers
Depends on the game, but a 690gtx is overkill and then some. My 670 never ever goes over 30% use on Borderlands 2, and that is rare. Usually it sits at about 10 to 15%. Oh and don't forget that whilst a standalone PhysX takes the strain off your main card by removing the PhysX, the main card is still responsible for rendering all those PhysX added objects, and so cranking up the PhysX effects will still drop your frame rate even with a great PhysX card.
Great vid will have to try it! Gopher, has the new Audio Overhaul for Skyrim popped up on your radar for a potential addition to the continued playthrough? Brodual has a nice vid showing off the difference in sound and it will likely make a world of difference..... If more immersive sounds interest you.... :-)
I am about to give this a try, but I must say that having my Dynavision mod set to static instead of dynamic greatly reduces me seeing the issue of the popping in textures trees and what have you. Not to everyone's liking having it on static, but trust me its a great deterrent, clearly it doesn't prevent the issue, but provides a great cover and I said it before and ill say it again, I do not have problems with popping in textures or witnessing trees and rocks suddenly appearing in the distance, plainly because the Dof does a grand job of hiding them, trust me and give it a shot.
For anyone that wants to reverse their ugrids choice, hear me out. You have played a bit, saved over the default save (Where ugridstoload=5) with a higher grids value and want to go back to the starting point. Normally it does not let you set the grids to lower, than it is on that save. But i've found a solution from the forums: Quote 1. Run Skyrim in windowed mode. (Change in launcher or Skyrimprefs.ini) 2. Load your save and then with the game running get to your desktop either by alt-tab or ctrl-alt-delete and find your Skyrim.ini. 3. Make sure the ini isn't read-only and change the ugrids to whatever odd number lower value you want (default 5) 4. Save the ini and go back to the game 5. Open the console by typing "~" (tilde), the key left of the 1 key. Then type "refreshini" (without quotes). Hit enter and type ~ to exit the console. 5. Save your game, exit, and restart with that save. That helped me reverse my ugrids. So you have to edit these manually in the skyrimprefs, and preferably do it inside Breezehome or smaller interior. That worked for me.
If it did have some other effects on grid loading and stability, I was considering installing it just to sit there in the background, suppose it can't hurt. Though my skyrim total memory usage is generally
Hey Gopher, I know how you like the dungeons ACAP (As Creepy As Possible) and I found a mod called Sounds of Skyrim that adds hundreds of new sounds to the Skyrim universe. I will say that some of the sounds in dungeons are pretty creepy and have made me jump a time or two. You may have heard of this already but if not, there ya go.
I just use Dynavision - it does two things: it decreases the effects of distant object pop-in and it also makes the foreground a little more pronounced. Oh, and it's stable :)
Another problem with increasing uGrids is that the game will run scripts in a much larger area which can make you miss quests and fights because they trigger too far away from you. Not a big problem if you just bump it up to 7 but beyond that it's worth being aware of.
Gopher, I noticed that you didn't mention that the view distance can also be adjusted from the Skyrim Loader menu. It's under options>advanced and there's a whole tab devoted just to view distance. There are sliders there for everything from Actors to Specularity. Or did you mention it and I just missed it? (It's what I get for watching it at 03:00 I suppose). Another great review. Look forward to more.
UGridsToLoad set to 7 along with DynDOLOD and xLODGen, is literally perfect. All uGridsToLoad will do that the others don’t, is help with grass distance. Add an ini fGrassFadeRange=85000 and iCellGrassRadius=3 as well and the results are stunning. I have dyndolod set to high and Gotta 4gb card and an enb and my game is very stable. 30 frames a second until I upgrade, but I rarely CTD. If I do, it’s one of the other 400 mods I’m sure. So don’t bother putting that shit up to 9. And honestly, expanding the terrain like that has indefinitely HELPED with stability. All that shit being loaded into a very small space is actually worse in my experience.
A trick I found is to actually alt-tab back into the game (you'll see a black screen). Shake your mouse until the window cursor disappears. Then alt-tab again into the game.
And thanks for the video, because I haddn't really understand what AltimorFP mod changed, it's a good thing we can load saves with different ugrids like it was with oblivion.
Hey Gopher, let me just say i am a huge fan of your work, your videos have helped me so much so far, and i bet they will help me more in the future I've looked at your videos, and one thing i couldn't find is a guide about Wrye Bash. could you perhaps do a modding guide with instructions to Wrye Bash for beginners? i know i could use such instructions, and i'm sure many more could use the help as well
I miss Richard so much. I want to see how he completes that Main Quest, and the Dawnguard quest. I also want to see him settle down and live out the rest of his days happily done with adventuring. On another thought, how cool would it be if your character's hair color and complexion changed through the passage of time?
Strange, it works perfectly for me and I assume you are using a standard Norwegian keyboard like me. You are not running some odd keyboard setting where you emulate the US keyboard?
in order to change ugrids don't you also need these 2 lines? (these values are for ugridstoload = 7) uExterior Cell Buffer=64 iPreloadSizeLimit=51380224
The mod description claims that 'This allows you to use higher uGridsToLoad settings' - as in it would help with the stability of the increased uGrids as well as adding its tools and save-game safety? From the video it sounds like it does no such thing, though? I don't really want to increase my uGrids but initially hoped it might help with stability generally, as in outdoor areas (particularly lush areas like Falkreath) I seem to have random CTDs every 20-120 minutes when transitioning cells.
CONTINUED: Wait five mins or so and plug it back in...check your IP to make sure it's changed and then go back into router setting and change back to forever keep IP and they can no longer ban you from making a new account as your IP has changed...hope this has helped.
I am not sure if this was covered elsewhere, but i was wondering if it would increase performance if i lowered the ugridstoload? Possibly resulting to other problems perhaps?
Great vid. Do you not need to change the uExterior Cell Buffer as well? You probably know this already but in the console you type "save beforeugridsetto7" To name the save. I find it useful when testing out new mods so I know which save file I can go back to, if the mod cause major problems
I recommend that you use distant terrain overhaul or any distant terrain mod instead of modifying your ugrids. Whenever i raise my ugrids it works fine for hours but later it starts crashing and my framerate tanks......I have heard rumors that it also contributes to savegame bloat. which is how i lost my 100+ hour skyrim save that had a modified ugrid value..... Only do it if you have a titan PC or if you only use a few mods. Tons of mods + a modded ugrid value can be fatal to your save game.
Gopher I found a mod on the nexus which changes the timescale I think I was just wondering if you could do a review on it so I could understand a little better in kind of a new guy to mods it is called dynamic timescale with autosave by Kae Arby anyway just want to say i am a massive fan and hope you keep making more vids Cheers
For some reason my .ini file was "Skyrim_default.ini" which of course took me awhile trying to find it but it's the exact same file as shown in Gopher's video and I got it safely running at 9 grids
hey gopher, if you didnt know already, running a dedicated physx card in games that dont support physx, like skyrim, can actually give you less performance than having just the other card you have.
Just had a little play, I seem to be able to run at 9. Thanks Gopher, I really hated when objects kept popping up as I was playing, ruined the immersion! I tried 11 but instant crash.
What about if you copy your save games from your save folder, on to another HDD, BEFORE altering with this mod. Then if everything goes pants up, delete the saves and copy back in your old saves?
Which let's play was Will from? New Vegas or FO3? Sorry Gopher I've just relatively recently found your channel and I'm trying to get caught up on videos :P
Skyrim is a beautiful game actually you know? A beautiful game isn't a game with best graphics ever, it's a game made by good graphical artists. And in skyrim the world is obviously really beautiful but of course the life is less sad when you are looking for butterfly instead of bugs.
i installed the mod but it made pop ins worst, not better. it worked fine before installing but now i see npc's that aren't too far popping in and even all of whiterun. i set my ugrid higher but i still see those pop ins from a distance and when my u grids are higher the game chrashes anyway. help!!
i don't understand if you have a 780 and a 670 in SLI why you wouldn't run a sharpshooters or unreal cinema enb rather than the faux post process injector stuff... i guess it's personal preference but i can run enb's on a single 680 with good performance.
When I changed mine, my performance was great but I kept getting CTDs. And it wasn't just annoying, it made it unplayable. Certain exterior areas became corrupted I guess. I would ctd in the same area constantly.
So far I've tested a max of uGridsToLoad=19 and and that was my stable limit. 21 didn't load at all and in all honesty I wouldn't go beyond 9 for anything playable. Good to know how far I can push my game though. :)
Thanks Gopher as always ur awesome learned just about everything about modding from u :) Modded fallout new vegas and skyrim so far I feel like a pro lol but curious is their a way to reach u in case I have any q's like an email tried through nexus but it said u couldn't receive it? Please and Thank You
Gopher, you really are the most reliable and concise skyrim mod reviewer....thanks for all your videos.
Since watching your videos, my Skyrim modding experience has become so much smoother and with less crashes. Thankyou so much
Even though I'm not playing Skyrim at the moment and haven't for quite a while, I still like to watch your videos and see whats going on. They are just always so darn well done.
lol in the future someone will find skyrim and be able to set there uGridsToLoad at like over 9000
moore's law bro!
ITS OVER 9000 !!
Deimately coming back to skyrim in 20 years to try that haha
+Zachary Mollohan I know I'm 2 years late lol, but anything past 21 is loading the entire game at once. Zachary Mollohan we're there now, welcome to the future, jk just here to see how far i can go :v hahaha ,well how to even to begin with hehe

I wonder what uGridsToLoad at 100 would be like, ignoring that most systems would probably burst into plasma if you try it.
That, my friend, is what would happen.
Sounds like the abridged version of a creepypasta.
I tried.
Just crash...ive tried lol
MalevolentJester
I GET YOUR NAME!
Kinda.
Watching a few of Gophers mod sanctuary videos is like taking a drug that calms your nerves and makes you sleepy.
Yes. I took a chance and stepped outside my Razer obsession and did not regret it. Perhaps the best mouse I have ever used actually. I got used to using it within minutes (although it took 3 hours to customize it perfectly to my hands).

Good stuff, Gopher. I like these meaty mod sanctuaries - big, important subjects like ENB's, ENBoost ctd fix, and now uGrids.
Gopher is pretty much a bonafide badass. I can't help but watch his videos, even if they don't have relevance to my gaming experience.
Way more than that actually. I just clean my save list when I start new characters.
(part 2) With Ugrids to 7 or 9 it could begin when you're still so far away that you won't even see it and when you arrive at the place where it happened you'll just find the dead giant and the companions on their way back to the city or even already gone.

to me it doesnt make sense to get that mod, but i watched every minute because i wanted to hear his voice^^
For this one I used AverMedias Live Gamer HD capture card and RECentral/Bandicam to record :)
Usually it sits at about 10 to 15%.

the key next to the "1" key is called the Tilde key. for all those who are curious lol.
I am about to give this a try, but I must say that having my Dynavision mod set to static instead of dynamic greatly reduces me seeing the issue of the popping in textures trees and what have you. to exit the console.

That helped me reverse my ugrids. So you have to edit these manually in the skyrimprefs, and preferably do it inside Breezehome or smaller interior. That worked for me.
You are an amzing RUclipsr Gopher, one of the best realy. Keep up the good work and I hope your relax time is going well.
Thanks gopher, I have been hoping for one of these
Yes. I will hopefully be resurrecting my New Vegas Mod Clinic series :)
If it did have some other effects on grid loading and stability, I was considering installing it just to sit there in the background, suppose it can't hurt.
Though my skyrim total memory usage is generally
No idea. I am not a Nexus admin and I have never been banned so I have no experience with it.
Will hands down. Power armor + Heavy Weapons + Explosives.
I hope Bethesda is sending you payments, everytime I watch one of these videos, it makes me want to go play more Skyrim. :-)
That usually happens if you alt-tab whilst in game mode. I always go to the menu before alt tabbing. But there is a fix for it.
I just use Dynavision - it does two things: it decreases the effects of distant object pop-in and it also makes the foreground a little more pronounced. Oh, and it's stable :)
"For me, 9 was unstable, pretty much immediately" - Gopher
Ya. Me too. :/
Absolutely love your videos!
He mentioned that he plans to, but only after Skyblivion/Skywind are released. So basically, once they look like Skyrim.
Another problem with increasing uGrids is that the game will run scripts in a much larger area which can make you miss quests and fights because they trigger too far away from you. Not a big problem if you just bump it up to 7 but beyond that it's worth being aware of.

Another great review. Look forward to more.
This was 4 years ago, so even if he had an insane setup, I should be able to load 11 grids with the newest GTX 1080ti right?
Sounds like a good mod.
You mean disabling Dawnguard might fix Stiv?
UGridsToLoad set to 7 along with DynDOLOD and xLODGen, is literally perfect. All uGridsToLoad will do that the others don’t, is help with grass distance. Add an ini fGrassFadeRange=85000 and iCellGrassRadius=3 as well and the results are stunning. And honestly, expanding the terrain like that has indefinitely HELPED with stability. All that shit being loaded into a very small space is actually worse in my experience.
You cannot run those cards in SLI. My 670 is a dedicated PhysX card now.
Gopher, could you do a video about texture optimazation, merged patches and other things that help your performance/stability?
A trick I found is to actually alt-tab back into the game (you'll see a black screen). Shake your mouse until the window cursor disappears. Then alt-tab again into the game.
And thanks for the video, because I haddn't really understand what AltimorFP mod changed, it's a good thing we can load saves with different ugrids like it was with oblivion.
Hey Gopher, let me just say i am a huge fan of your work, your videos have helped me so much so far, and i bet they will help me more in the future
I've looked at your videos, and one thing i couldn't find is a guide about Wrye Bash. could you perhaps do a modding guide with instructions to Wrye Bash for beginners? i know i could use such instructions, and i'm sure many more could use the help as well
I would actually be interested in seeing you do a Let's Play for Xcom: Enemy Unknown
I miss Richard so much. I want to see how he completes that Main Quest, and the Dawnguard quest. I also want to see him settle down and live out the rest of his days happily done with adventuring.

I can't wait to see more Richard!
in order to change ugrids don't you also need these 2 lines? (these values are for ugridstoload = 7)
uExterior Cell Buffer=64
iPreloadSizeLimit=51380224
No you SHOULD edit all three lines. But believe me, it is better to change all of them!
Hey gopher, mind reviewing Immersive and customizable Castle Volkihar? It's at the nexus and looks quite interesting, thanks.

I am not sure if this was covered elsewhere, but i was wondering if it would increase performance if i lowered the ugridstoload? Possibly resulting to other problems perhaps?
two things , 1st i love u gopher , 2nd is plz do skyrim lets plays as awsomely as u ever did THANKS
I think I will play that one privately. Need some games where I can just play and zone out :)
Great vid. Do you not need to change the uExterior Cell Buffer as well?
You probably know this already but in the console you type "save beforeugridsetto7" To name the save. I find it useful when testing out new mods so I know which save file I can go back to, if the mod cause major problems
would you consider doing a video about the mod "optimizer textures"?
You need to check out Real Clouds it is amazing and HD circlets to make that old thing on Richards head look awesome aswell.
I appreciate the reply sir. Love your channel!
Gopher I found a mod on the nexus which changes the timescale I think I was just wondering if you could do a review on it so I could understand a little better in kind of a new guy to mods it is called dynamic timescale with autosave by Kae Arby
anyway just want to say i am a massive fan and hope you keep making more vids Cheers
For some reason my .ini file was "Skyrim_default.ini" which of course took me awhile trying to find it but it's the exact same file as shown in Gopher's video and I got it safely running at 9 grids
lol welcome back for the mod santuary
hey gopher, if you didnt know already, running a dedicated physx card in games that dont support physx, like skyrim, can actually give you less performance than having just the other card you have.
Just had a little play, I seem to be able to run at 9. Thanks Gopher, I really hated when objects kept popping up as I was playing, ruined the immersion! I tried 11 but instant crash.
I have two 690 gtx's and Ive always wondered if theres a noticable difference if I have run phsyx.
What about if you copy your save games from your save folder, on to another HDD, BEFORE altering with this mod. Then if everything goes pants up, delete the saves and copy back in your old saves?
ok, thanks for the advice but ill just wait. but 1 more question when ip changes can it go back to what it was on its own?
Which let's play was Will from? New Vegas or FO3? Sorry Gopher I've just relatively recently found your channel and I'm trying to get caught up on videos :P
Can this help the problem with dragon's not loading their close up textures and remaining in their low res distant textures? :D
I love your accent and i´m german :D
Your tutorials are almost perfect.
Keep on the good work :)
Great video. Thanks. I look forward to one on texture optimization and shadows. :)
Skyrim is a beautiful game actually you know? A beautiful game isn't a game with best graphics ever, it's a game made by good graphical artists. And in skyrim the world is obviously really beautiful but of course the life is less sad when you are looking for butterfly instead of bugs.
i installed the mod but it made pop ins worst, not better. it worked fine before installing but now i see npc's that aren't too far popping in and even all of whiterun. i set my ugrid higher but i still see those pop ins from a distance and when my u grids are higher the game chrashes anyway. help!!
any way to stop actor fade or item fade perm? i find i'm being attacked by archers or bandit's and i cant even see them? any idea's gopher :)
does anyone know what helmet that is in the screenshot titled "before the attack" by tuskandink? thanks.
i don't understand if you have a 780 and a 670 in SLI why you wouldn't run a sharpshooters or unreal cinema enb rather than the faux post process injector stuff... i guess it's personal preference but i can run enb's on a single 680 with good performance.
Please and Thank You
Will you ever do/have a setup video?
Gopher, you need to change the exterior thing, under the ugrids, when you change the ugrids. I think for 7, it should be 64.
You should try out the quest/DLC mod called Wyrmstooth.
It´s awesome!
How much of a performance drop would you get with Ugridstoload=7
Can this be used to set grids to load below 5? To make the game run easier on my poor little laptop
