The hologram is a perfect simulation of Rimmer, so does what Rimmer would do, including sleeping, exercising and being scared of getting hurt, even though he know he's an electric ghost.

Reactors to this show often seem focused on the fact that the holograms do things that would SEEM like they wouldn't be necessary for a computer generated and maintained entity.. Reality is that this being our "go-to" reaction shows how little we really know. IF we intend there to be a different way for "humans to exist" then of course the more LIKE our current existence it is the more reasonable/feasible the idea would be.
It is a rather interesting concept the idea of what something "is" (Look up "Ship of theseus").. and.. When it comes to the human being (our minds), not everything is as plain as "information, and program".. A ~lot~ of people find it strange to create a hologram "that needs sleep".. but.. if the hologram is supposed to be a human, then we must remember that a person is not just static, we are constantly in change, and the biology of various things ARE part of the actual psychology that goes on inside, f.ex. signal substances, hormones, and so on constantly influence us and our way of thinking..
But even in a purely "programatical" way there will be things that people without reason seem to ASSUME that a virtual person wouldn't need that may literally be required simply because it's part of how things work, and this goes even more IF the point is that you would like to have a "person" live on in a computer.. Sleep is one of those things. There are some thoughts about why we sleep in the first place, but we really really don't know why we sleep or WHY animals need sleep. It is NOT restful (especially not for the mind).. It is- of course- disadvantageous (especially from an evolutionary perspective) to spend almost a third of the day unconscious, so whatever it is: It's important enough to be an easy meal for predators, and no other way to create a viable thinking being has been found by evolution as of yet..
Also; A LOT of "who we are" do relate to things that are subconscious and based on our evolution... It hinges on the things we worry about, what we are striving for (and why we are striving will affect HOW we are striving)..
I don't say that I know it wouldn't be possible to take out our "essence" (or soul) and create some form of emulation which simply "just exists", but the ~simple~ way to get it done (The only way we would know for SURE probably would work, but only if there isn't a thing that would be an ACTUAL soul, if the brain really IS the totality of our existence) would be to literally emulate every single atom and simulate sensory input, and so on. . IF we ever get to actually create a thinking being that exists inside of a computer that WOULD be how to get it started, and then after learning more we may figure out various ways to make the thinking being work "the same way" and reduce various "functions" that influence the program at a whole by replacing actual algorithms that are complex with simpler that are "good enough" and provides similar stimuli,, and part of this reduction may literally be that we find out what the actual processes of sleep is INTENDED to do with the "data" so we can remove it in it's entirety and just run a simple algorithm that compensates so even these fairly imperative functions MAY be replaced with different things that work "just as well" and the final result may end up being what people expect.. Who knows PERHAPS someone at some point may be intelligent and knowledgable enough so people could even start off creating this "final result" as the FIRST version, but.. That would require OH so much more before even getting going, and probability is that the things we'd need to know to even get started would take a lot longer to learn without actual "experience" in the field, so. .starting with a direct replication of the current working model and then trying to inch your way to something working differently will most likely cut the development time into a minute fraction of the time it otherwise would take.. but worse.. it's possible it's impossible to create the "Artificial copy of a human being" WITHOUT these things without actually going through the process of trial and error in just minor changes from the working model so it may never never ever come into fluition even if it would be possible ~if~ we want to start with the version that doesn't sleep.

"Danger. Government Health Warning. This music can make you irritable and irrational and has been linked to disorders of the nervous system and bowels."
Possibly a satire of the then recent Parental Advisory Explicit Lyrics adoption by the RIAA.
Also Classical "Motorhead", similar joke to Doctor Who's 'End of the World'

Cult comedy from the 80's, still going today although sporadically. Its a parody of sci fi laced with typical British 'schoolboy' humour, slapstick jokes etc. Don't worry about logic, its a comedy.

Dave Lister has his cigarettes in his cap for one particular reason - when they were in the trouser pockets, Craig Charles (actor) kept smoking them.
