Why Do Skunks Have Stripes?

- Why do skunks have their distinctive strips? Museum Educator Jason explains that skunks’ stripes aren’t for camouflage, but rather they act as a warning signal when they feel threatened. When facing potential predators, striped skunks will stomp their feet, arch their backs, and raise their tails to make their white stripes as visible as possible, essentially saying, “Come any closer and you might get sprayed!” When this warning system doesn’t work, they will spray a smelly oil from the base of their tail. Because animals’ memories are deeply tied to scent, any animal that has been sprayed will associate that smell with white stripes, and stay far away!

My Lhasa Apso sure remembered his San Diego spray.
Oh no! We're sure it was a lasting memory.
The smell is chemical like an industrial pollutant. It is awful and lingers. It is much worse than you imagine.

The white stripes are a warning signal...that only works when you are skunk. A logic that makes total sense. It's like saying the dots on a jaguar are a warning signal. No, the jaguar itself is the warning signal.
Except the spots are for camo
@@velfaern1716 That example wasn't too good. But if I was to have white stripes, I don't think everyone assumes I stink. The stripes should be more of an accessory or a secondairy warning. As in you all know I have a toxic smell and this is how you quickly recognize me.
