You might actually be the perfect woman!! Well done!! New subscriber here and I love the 40's/50's and I think you do an amazing job in all your videos 🥰🥰❤❤
I'm also a new subby. Waiting for my setting lotion to come tomorrow from Amazon and just bought some new bobby pins. Hoping that I get it SOMEWHERE near your pretty curls! (I have naturally straight hair) I've always wanted to dress and live a 40's - 50's lifestyle and you have inspired me so much!
I see so many tutorials involving backcombing, tons of spray, endless sculpting, and creating “dents”. If pincurling and brushing out is done correctly, you don’t need all that!!! Yours looks so soft and natural, and way more true to the 40’s era
@Tara Lucas I think that really depends on someone's hair. I have coily (as in an actual afro hair) hair that needs to have tons of hair spray and duckbill clips to help define and set the waves in my hair. I don't think it's a matter or someone doing it right, rather than what works best for individuals hair. For instance if someone has coarse hair (as in large hair strands) then once their hair is set and holds the style, they probably won't need tons of hair spray and back combing. My hair doesn't need the back combing because it is voluminous enough but it struggles to hold onto curls well, that are not my natural coils. Furthermore the reason why the poster of this video doesn't need to do all those additional steps is because her hair curls easily, and she has a natural gentle wave to her hair as well. All those features make it very easy for her to have her hair curl, and have those curls stay once she starts molding them. As a black woman with natural hair, I find that typically even though we have very curly or even coily hair we can't brush our curls out as much. Whereas I've noticed women with naturally straight hair tend to spend way more time with their brush outs because they generally have to roll their curls tighter to their heads, or just take slightly smaller sections so that they can still have waves and curls with their hair. Also I want to say that this wonderful woman who created this video has a fantastic point indeed, please do this style on damp hair. Hair does not need to be sopping wet for this to work.
Trouble is, we don’t all have her volume of hair. If I were to roll the same number of pin curls she rolls here, my sections would be the size of match sticks, and the result of the comb out would be a 1980s perm shag. So some of us do need to cheat. I am having all the trouble in the world with comb outs just because of my lack of volume. Backcombing helps a lot, and so do alternative rolling patterns. Also, I do standing pin curls all around for volume, and I do sleep on them, and that also helps. They do end up squished, but they are fluffier than flat pin curls because the curl is not gathered in a bunch. Bottom line, I have the same preferences as you, I don’t like product and I like touchable hair, but since I am not genetically equipped, I have to make do with the extra steps and product. I wish there were a fine haired miss on here showing the fine haired minority how to do 1950s styles adapted to our hair. Fine haired ladies existed back then too, and they still styled, so there has got to be alternatives.
@@dawnssful I have the opposite of your hair, fine and straight, and I too switch the pin curl clips and the bobby pins out for duck bill clips, depending. They work great for me, they don’t leave any more of a dent than pin curl clips and less of a dent than bobby pins (fine hair dents a lot). Also, my hair is fragile given it is fine, and duck bill clips insert more straightforward and don’t get caught like other clips and pins so there is less damage when removing them. They also hold in place better because they are longer. I wonder why people don’t use them more.
@@Gomba13 I use the pin curl clips when I am pin curling my hair, but I use the duckbill clips to hold the waves in place once I start the brush out process. Believe it or not my hair is actually fine and delicate like your hair, but it is coily and not straight. I do think that you make a great point in mentioning that fine hair can dent easily, my hair most definitely does as well. When you use duck bill clips do you use them hold multiple pin curls in place?
I genuinely think this is the first vintage hair tutorial I've watched where the whole process didn't come across as overwhelming and daunting to me. You really made it simple to watch, follow and now I'm super excited to try this tonight! Thank you!
My aunt used to put her hair up in pincurls all the time. She, like me, had poker straight hair, but it was the style ... she would always tell me, when I was struggling to set my hair, that "Beauty must suffer!" We would always laugh! Thanks for bringing back such wonderful memories!
Ok...I'm of the era of Bobby pins, curlers, and hair dryers. For fun I'm going to pin curl tonight. I absolutely love the memories you bring to me of the 50's
Absolutely Gorgeous, I thank ALL the young ladies out there that choose to keep these vintage styles alive , THANK YOU from us baby boomers :-) You ladies look Fabulous !!!!
I tried this and I am obsessed! I've always loved vintage hair but I thought it was really difficult to do. I was also worried it wouldn't work well with my hair type. I have very fine thin straight hair. But this gave me the volume I've always wanted! I'm very happy!!! Thank you for this tutorial ♡♡♡♡
Thank you Sage!! This has to be my most favorite hairstyle I have ever done. I have always loved the 1950’s hair but I never knew how to do the hairstyles. But I tried pin curls with your tutorial and it worked so well! It looks like a 1950’s hairstyle! My pin curls were a bit messy when I was first pinning them up but it worked the next day! ❤❤
Sage, I've been a subscriber for about a month. Even though I usually don't comment on videos, I want to say I am really glad I found your channel by accident. You are a pretty lady with a lovely voice and very enthusiastic about the subjects you like. When I watch your videos I feel like time traveling to a fun and fancy age. THANK YOU! I am a total beginner when it comes to styling hair (and doing makeup), but I wanted to start completing my vintage look with the proper hairdo! I will be trying this out tonight and updating tomorrow. Edit: Just finished doing all the curls. It’s not bad for my first time (especially since it’s my first time doing hair EVER) but it’s definitely looking rough. Hopefully it turns out well. Edit: Finished brushing it out, and it’s amazing! Definitely could use improvement on my end, but great for my first time.
I just love the cheerfulness of this tutorial! ☺️ It's a rather rare thing to find, it seems. Most try to impress and use affectations; she just shares and smiles.
I don't know if this makes sense but you have a very 1950s face to go with this hairstyle. It seems like pictures of women from the 50s had a soft look; big smiles and rosy cheeks and happy eyes. Not like the harsh, pouty look of "models" today. You have this look. Very cute and classy.
This is giving me horror flash backs of when I used to try and pin curl my hair 😳 My hair hates anything curl related and refuses to look good if I try to curl it. I'm talking frizzy poodle hair lol. Yours look so good!
My parents were married in 1954. My Dad gave a hair brush, with a matching mirror, to my Mom one year for Christmas when they were first married. It is the same style, and almost identical, to the hair brush you are using : )
Have you run across the scarf twist trick? I don’t know how to explain it, but instead of bobby pins you wrap your hair around a scarf, the results are nearly identical. I’ve been enjoying your channel and when I did the scarf curl trick and brushed my hair out the next day I thought, “oh my hair looks like Sage‘s!” 😂 your videos have influenced my Homemaking skills with some 1950’s charm😉❤️
I don't know if you mean banana curls. My mom and grandma would wrap sections of our hair around strips of cut up sheets tying them at the end. We had wonderful spiral curls for church.
Sage Lilleyman I suppose you could use a bath robe tie, I just use a large scarf that I’ve rolled into a long thin... rope like thing? I saw it on RUclips but I can’t remember where 😂 But yes, your videos are so charming and refreshing ☺️❤️
Lili sorry I thought my comment to Sage went to you too. Clearly I don’t understand youtube 😂 I don’t think it’s like what you described? Although that sounds really cool! I just found a video a gal using one long scarf and wrapping her hair around it so it’s around your head and tied at the top. Not sure if that makes sense. You could prob just type in scarf curls or something and find a lot of vids on it. I’d like to try Sages bobby pin up for a more vintage look though!:)
I am AMAZED by this video Sage! Thank you so much for making it. The pincurl hairstyles were soooooooo beautiful, and I can see why. So much attention to detail and patience is required. You look beautiful!
I come back here the day before every big party I attend. Some day I hope to do it as beautifully as you! Ive been quite happy with mine, too, so thank you so much for explaining it so well! You're continuously helping me learn my favourite look with just this video ❤
So nice to meet you, Sage, you are such a delight and a breath of fresh air! You're beautiful inside and out! Since I'm a new subscriber, I must catch up on all your wonderful videos especially those with James and your chickens! LOL! I don't know if you've already mentioned this, but during the '50s and to this very day, using a satin or silk pillowcase can help keep your hairstyle in place even while you are tossing and turning throughout the night. Also, do you have any videos showing the two of you socializing with friends in your vintage home? That would be really cool! Keep up the great work, Sage! You're a keeper!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! My daughter & I were researching how to do her hair for her upcoming role in Radium Girls, & we found your video. It took maybe 20 minutes for me to do last night, & her hair this morning is absolutely gorgeous & spot on! We have never gotten successful curls in her hair. It’s so thick & straight, but this worked like crazy. Btw, your finished product is beautiful! 😃
I've never been the greatest hairstylist, but I love anything vintage and am so wanting to try this! Pin curling certainly looks a little daunting, but the results look even more worth it. I've been trying to pick up old-fashioned routines, and this is my next one. All I need is a side hair comb and I'll be set to try it out. Glad I found this channel; it'll be nice to go over all of your videos!
You are really a vintage sweetheart😍 The curls look really great, I think I have to try the pin curls after all . I always use sponge rollers but the curls are mostly a little bit to tight as you said and the curls a little bit harder to brush out
Perfect!! Loved this! It makes me think I could even give it a try! I guess I'd have to cut my hair first. You are a lovely person! Your channel will continue to grow!

Thank you so much for this video! I recently got a bad haircut and I'm lost as to what to do with it, so I've been experimenting with it more lately, trying to find the optimal way until it grows out. I absolutely love vintage hairstyles but I always felt intimidated by them until I watched your video which made it look doable. A lot of women who did similar tutorials also had perfectly bleached hair and looked nothing like mine, so it was so nice seeing someone with brown hair like mine. I'm sitting with the pin curls on my head right now. I have no idea if it'll turn out any good on me in the morning, but at least I tried it after so many years of thinking about it! Huge thank you
You look so much like Lily James it's CRAZY. also I've been looking for pin curl tuts for forever and this is the only one I've seen that actually gives an authentic 40s/50s look, thank you!
I tried this tutorial and it works! My hair is longer, so I wasn't sure if the pins would hold, but they did. I got so many compliments the next day, and questions about how my hair was so curly. The curls definitely look different than using a curling iron, and for me they stayed much better. I just ordered a hair net and scarf so I can preserve the style a little better. Thank you for this straight forward tutorial!
I have naturally curly hair, which I love but it can be much harder to figure out vintage hairstyling. I might give this a go and see what happens! It seems so simple compared to other videos where you need a ton of products.
I just started to watch your video on victory rolls & thought to myself 'well, great, but how do I make a pin curl?' Looked up _pin curl tutorial_ on YT and here you are again, first video! Thank you, Sage, you're the best 😊
I didn't use to comb my hair because I don't know how to do it but I have followed your tutorials and the result is wonderful, now I am in love with this style ♥
Gah you make it look so easy! I’ve been avoiding pin curls like the plague just because they seem so difficult, but foam rollers aren’t giving me the results I want. I’m gonna give these a shot, I hope they work for me! :)
I love how easy your tutorials are and don't use a lot of products to do your hair💛💛 always thought that curls with bobby pins become more fluffy, the work that gives is worth💐💐
I’ll be honest, I’m probably not going to do this... but I LOVE watching how perfect the curls look and LOVE listening to your sweet voice! It’s ASMR for the soul. Congrats on the success! ☺️
Ive watched a multitude of your videos and I really enjoy them. I love vintage especially 1940s.. You have reminded me of someone for some time. And tonight i realized who... It's Shirley Temple.
This vid should be captioned (or tagged) with "pin curls vs foam rollers". Was looking for that specifically and didn't find anything and stumbled onto this one looking at other styles. Happy to have found that gem showing how easy brushing and guiding is with pincurls.
Hi Sage, congratulations on 40k,that's awesome. I was excited to see the title of this, cause this was something my mother used to do to curl my hair. We did it a little differently, but I actually would sleep with these in my hair, lol.at least a couple times a week. We would use just washed hair, still damp.and put a towel over,or a little cap. And it would be super curly in the morning. I still have a million bobby pins around. You did a great job. It turned out great. 😊
I just found your channel yesterday and I LOVE IT! You keep it interesting, & now I want to try this vintage look/style/way of life. You seem like an ‘Old-Soul’ and I love it! Keep up the excellent work. I plan to watch ALL your episodes (binge)… I look forward to many new ones too. If I ever vacation to Australia 🇦🇺; I wish to meet you… however, I a, from western NY& Vacation time is limited for now (as well as finances). Your channel is amazing. You are one of my favorite RUclips celebrities.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I’ve been trying to get this style but all I’ve been using is foam rollers so now I know I need to be pin curling!
@keaghan I often wear pin curl hairstyles and there are two ways to 'save' them over night: 1. I roll the curls in pin curls again so they don't lose the shape. 2. You can use a hairnet
Piggybacking on the re-rolling… I saw another RUclipsr do something awesome for re-rolling. Basically, if you want to refresh the existing curls and not literally curl everything all over again, you need to follow the existing curls, but since you brushed them out, it’s hard to pick them back up again. So what you do is take the section of hair you intend to re-roll and twirl it just like you would if you were a 1950s starlet winking at a cute guy, and then release the section. It will bounce back into the one curl you want to re-roll. This is fool proof and works every time!
Strangely enough checking out videos on pincurling relaxed hair might be the best videos to watch on this. Or check out videos on pincurling straight natural hair (as in hair of people of African descent think of the naturals aka afros of the. 70s)

Yayyyy! Your hair is so perfect (especially in the 1960's workout where it withstood A LOT) and I'm still practicing. Good tips.
Thanks! xx
Your hair is so bouncey and shiny!!! 💖💖💖
Thank you! :)
This totally worked for me! Thank you!! I was so discouraged after never getting the look I desired with foam rollers. This is sooooo much better!
Thank you for this. I just love the pin curl look on you. Definitely going to do this, especially love the comb on the side. 💕
You are so welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! xx
Oh I’m so glad to hear it was helpful and it’s lovely to hear you got some wonderful compliments on your new hairstyle! Xx 💕
I love your videos, and your personality is so likeable!! Keep up the hard work ❤️
Thank you so much!!
I have naturally curly hair, which I love but it can be much harder to figure out vintage hairstyling. I might give this a go and see what happens! It seems so simple compared to other videos where you need a ton of products.
So so glad this came up in my recommended 😍 your hair looks GORGEOUS! I tried pin curling just my bangs and they came out great 😁
I just started to watch your video on victory rolls & thought to myself 'well, great, but how do I make a pin curl?' Looked up _pin curl tutorial_ on YT and here you are again, first video! Thank you, Sage, you're the best 😊
Awww haha you are too sweet, thank you! 💕☺️
The level of satisfaction that I get just by watching how the hair, without any special tools, can be done is just...🥰🔥🔥👍nature gave it all ♥️♥️🙏
That tutorial actually taught me how to do it, I was even afraid to try before, they make it look so hard.
I JUST LOVE IT WHEN SHE TELLS ME "HELLO DARLING".
I didn't use to comb my hair because I don't know how to do it but I have followed your tutorials and the result is wonderful, now I am in love with this style ♥
Yay, I'm so glad you tried it out and love it! xx
Gah you make it look so easy! I’ve been avoiding pin curls like the plague just because they seem so difficult, but foam rollers aren’t giving me the results I want. I’m gonna give these a shot, I hope they work for me! :)
I remember my mom pincurling her hair! I still do now and then. Great styling.
This looks very doable and you are just lovely! Can’t wait to try it!
This is perfect and exactly what I was looking for! I can’t wait to try it, thank you!
This hair looks amazing even with the bobby pins. Loved the video! Thank u ❤
I can't wait to do this with my daughter. Your hair looks so pretty. Thank you. ❤
Congratulations to 40k subscribers. Love the results of your tutorial
So pleased this actually worked thanks for the tutorial ❤
As usual, simple and gorgeous.
Beautiful! Do you have a vintage makeup tutorial?
I love how easy your tutorials are and don't use a lot of products to do your hair💛💛 always thought that curls with bobby pins become more fluffy, the work that gives is worth💐💐
Glad you like them, thanks so much!
I’ll be honest, I’m probably not going to do this... but I LOVE watching how perfect the curls look and LOVE listening to your sweet voice! It’s ASMR for the soul. Congrats on the success! ☺️
Aw you are so sweet, thanks so much!
Ive watched a multitude of your videos and I really enjoy them. I love vintage especially 1940s.. You have reminded me of someone for some time. And tonight i realized who... It's Shirley Temple.
Your hair looks lovely. Thanks for showing us how to do this. Have a great day. 🙋🏼
Thank you so much! :)
@@SageLilleyman you're very welcome sweetie 😊❤

I remember my mom doing pin curls or me and my sisters hair when we were little.❤
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I’ve been trying to get this style but all I’ve been using is foam rollers so now I know I need to be pin curling!
thank you so much this really helped me understand how pin curls work 😭💘💘
Could you share how you 'save' the hairstyle for day 2?
@keaghan I often wear pin curl hairstyles and there are two ways to 'save' them over night:
1. I roll the curls in pin curls again so they don't lose the shape.
2. You can use a hairnet
Piggybacking on the re-rolling…
I saw another RUclipsr do something awesome for re-rolling.
I'm trying this right now.Ill update in the morning!
EDIT:It's the morning.I tried it and OH GOD.IT LOOKS AMAZING!
