  • Established in 2005, Kavalan is Taiwan’s first whisky maker and the nation’s only family-owned distillery. Kavalan takes the old name of Yilan county where the distillery is located in northeastern Taiwan. Kavalan Distillery brings together a professional whisky R&D team with a world-class master blender, Ian Chang. Ian was joined by Nate Gana, founder of @SingleMaltDaily, an Instagram account devoted to the love of malts and drams of all kinds.

Both Ian and Nate were super cool. Enjoyed the talk and now have more of an appreciation for Kavalan. Had a bottle from the Soliste series that a friend brought back from Taiwan and fell in love with it.

      Soloist you mean?

@@vbdemystified709it's actually spelled "Solist" so go figure, wonder if it's Portuguese or another language (like the bottle of Solist Vinho Barrique I'm sipping on atm)

Just an update: Ian left Kavalan and later joined a group in Japan to become their master distiller to build their distillery. We here in Taiwan will miss him, best wishes, and hopefully i can have a dram with him in the future one day.

Please tell me that they are not going to sit there talking next to three bottles of whiskey for nearly an hour and just drink water from plastic bottles. - j q t -

I wonder what a 'Barrel Proof' Bourbon would taste like if it were aged during its final years (or perhaps even entirely) in Taiwan's climate? And would it still be legal to sell it as Bourbon if it was aged outside of the United States? Aren't some distiller/distributors experimenting with aging Bourbon on ships at sea? - j q t -

By law, it wouldn't be called bourbon. Bourbon MUST be made in America. I've wondered the opposite: how our Taiwanese tropical deep fruits would age in the Scottish regions over roughly a decade give or take.

The single malt is good but it is too fruity to be a single malt very nice though. There other whiskeys Sherry cask are beautiful!

I don't think you understand what single malt means. It essentially means a single distillery
