Teresa Huang Speaking as an ABC, Australian-born Chinese, it can be hard to associate with those who openly refer to us as bananas, criticise our lack of desire for materiality, and mock our "lack of ambition" merely because we chose to pursue an intellectual/artistic discipline. There's a difference between constructive criticism and judgement. ABCs don't appreciate it when such negativity is directed at them. Jimmy is right about letting your bosses think your ideas are their ideas by just talking to them. I tried to push an agenda in a company with middle management once, and never got anywhere. They didn't want to assume the risk for someone else's idea. On a road trip in a car with the boss of our department who later became CEO, instead of pushing my agenda, I asked pointed questions to lead my boss to my way of thinking. In the next company meeting, he announced this agenda as his idea. When he announced it, my co-worker immediately looked at me and said, "Hey! That was your idea." I told him I didn't care about the credit as long as we did it, since it benefitted all of us. It worked out for me, I rose in the company and stayed there for six years until I found something better and more challenging. Just make sure if you influence others with your ideas, your company recognizes you eventually, and you rise in the company, otherwise they are just using you for your ideas, and you need to move on.

Not just Asian, there are also a lot of working class parents in Central Europe who think that way. Or at least used to. Not sure how it is today but I certainly grew up being told that.
Through his raw honesty Jimmy O. has the ability to touch on the human spirit in all of us, and show that regardless of where we are from, pursuit of dreams and happiness, while at the same time embracing the things that make us different, is and should be celebrated as a good thing. He is so relevant for today, especially when you consider the political narrative and problems falsely being attributed to immigrants.
You are falsely stating what the narrative is.. You have spun the truth into what you want to believe is the truth instead of what the truth actually is! The only political views about immigrants is illegal immigrants that cross the border illegally! But you ignore that little inconvenient truth! Look at the borders.. Drug cartels are sending fentanyl over in droves so much that now it is the leading cause of death among people ages 18-45, not to mention the trafficking going on. Your political opponents have always been for LEGAL immigrants!! GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!! QUIT SPEWING YOUR NARRATIVE!
I thought that similarly - when he talked about that difficult conversation he had with his dad about not wanting to pursue a career in finance, not to trivialize the coming out process, and the difficulties that the LGBTQIA community faces - but that was a coming out story with its own merit.
Jimmy is such a legend! But, seriously, what muppet picked this woman to interview him? The cringe factor is so bad! She’s awful. So fake, there’s literally no chemistry she’s so bad.
As an immigrant myself, I can’t stress enough how much of his early experiences I related to! Thank you Jimmy for being super honest and vulnerable. You are a brilliant communicator!!
I like that he is very articulate and not a hyper comedian. A lot of comedians are too hyper (trying too hard) when doing their acts or when being interviewed.
Jimmy O. Yang, I am reliving my youth by reading your book, How to American. I grew up in Post War Hong Kong (1952) and raised in Vancouver, BC. I appreciate that you live like Chinese in Canada/USA. Please be thankful for your roots, we're still "from the village"
indeed HK is superior, when u undeerstand how China works. but maybe no more 10 years later, no more free press, free speech, freedom for adacemy research, just an other Chineae city, mind controlled by CCP
Permit me to intrude, have you heard about an innovation called bitcoin and how a distinguished man called me Larry Kent Burton is helping immigrants not only in America but all around the world generate income and better their standard of living
Point of correction he doesn’t only help immigrants, I am an American citizen and I have had a streak of successful investments with him, he is just the best at financial matters
Wow... I can’t believe how similar my life is with Jimmy’s. I’m born in HK, came to the US in 2000, barely spoke English, no Asian friends, hung out with the exact same race of people as my buddy, went to UCSD and majored in Economics... and hated finance. Just wow....
I really admire the way Jimmy talked about himself and his experiences. He is funny, confident and positive. I am so happy that when my son grows up he now has some examples he can follow. Yeah, that semi-racism within Chinese has only grown over years.
It’s so odd because I wasn’t a fan of him in on Silicon Valley at first but videos like this, his standup, etc make me a huge fan of him and his work. What a cool dude.
He deserves more credit than he is getting. I love his comedy and how smart and honest he is about it. I think comedians before him who made similar jokes did not make it because alot of Americans have no idea what Asian Parents are like, especially chinese parents and so they miss the point.
I guess one very important quality that you need to have as a foreigner, or minority in this country is to be comfortable and confident with yourself and with who you are, like what jimmy has shown in this interview. As a Chinese immigrant who came to the states after becoming an adult, I used to be a FOB - well, might as well still be - I learned from my American friends that I need to embrace who I am. I find that I gain more respect that way than when I tried so hard to shy away from anything that will label me as a foreigner.
Jimmy is so realistic. He is the pioneer in DEI initiative. I love that he calls out his journey as a new immigrant. I resonate a lot with what he said about how he was excluded by his own people.
" Some kind of peace there... it was good to know that there is a part of the world that I can always feel that way" Jimmy O Yang THIS!!! so heartwarming :))))
Love this talk, and how Jimmy handled the QA. He is very precise in pointing out the different side, and use the soft approach which I love is to "humanize" the story. Often, there are just too many argue between different generation and culture, and even between the ABC / 1.5 generation and FOB. (for the Asian people living out side of Asia). I personally went through that process, and now looking back, some of the situation I could have deal much better. There is definitely right or wrong in certain situation, just a different patch of choice.
What honesty !!!! Jimmy O Yang enjoys several cultures, languages, is self-deprecating, the best at what he does, success on his own terms - thank you for a great interview
He might be one of the few Chinese that made it to the mainstream popularity. It's not just because of sheer luck, but basically, he is just a likeable person. Every Chinese American should celebrate and embrace their identity.
I know many asians my not relate, but im asian raised in Massachusetts in the 70's which was pretty hard in the beginning. But when i moved to California at 13 years old, my mind was more white but I definitely was Asian on the outside. But i always got what i aimed for and never felt discrimination but im sure i was at time. But since i wasn't looking for it, nothing ever stopped me. I reached all my goals i set at 8 years old by 30. I did give my asian mom some heart attacks but was always a respectful son. Always sending money to them until they told me to stop when I got married. Lol I didn't learn how hard it was to be an Asian male until i took an Asian American class in college. I then (at age 50) asked young Asian girls/woman how they felt sbout asian men and how young Asian teens and men felt about being Asian. Wow i didn't know how different i grew up not feeling or looking for the differences. Just wanted to say that i agree with his statement. Don't let be being Asian discrimination be the reason you stop trying. I never knew it existed even though I see it now sometimes and i reached all my goals. Best wishes and God bless you all, Leo
I feel His New York accent really helps set him apart from other comedians, in fact you can still his hear his asian accent behind it a little bit, making it even more unique
Great content! Congratulations to the interviewer who is very well prepared and Jimmy for being eloquent at the same time Well grounded, as well as the audience who seem to be so engaging. Kudos to the ones who asked great questions!
Wow! his shanghainese pronunciation is superbly excellent, it's totally genuine! As same as shanghainese, I have to be proud of our well cultured Shanghainese. We are fun, smart, and confident with our hard working and study code for living attitude. With the pains to be blending into multi-cultrual impacts in the US or wherever, we always felt very happy because we could learned and experienced so much in this world. We are kind of MONSTER who absorbed and digested multiply cultures and palyed these very well. Asians especially Shanghainese played better. Give my best wishes to this funny and honor man - Jian Yang AKA Jimmy.O.Yang.
Excellent interview. Came across this by accident but found it very interesting and entertaining as well. The lady is cool and Jimmy is smart. Good job!
Love him! I resonnate so much with the pizza hut story. It was considefed quite an upscale restaurant in Beijing back then as well. I invited my college roommate for dinner there after I started working, which cost 1/4 of my salary for the month. (Granted I wasn't making a lot but still.) And how people in Hong Kong think they are better. Within mainland China, Shanghainese also consider they are better, like New Yorkers here😂.
I'm watching this right after watching the other Talks at Google with the main cast members and its kind of hilarious and ironic how chaotic and off the cuff they were in their interview versus "Jian-Yiang" hahaha. Love Jimmy honestly, so funny yet also intelligent and eloquently spoken.
Jimmy, you are great, big time, honestly funny and so emotionally entertaining!! Do what you feel coz I am pretty convinced that you're really well in touch with yourself!! You're blessed!!
I am also an immigrant from Taiwan who came to this country without speaking much English. Now I have been in the US for about 35 years and have achieved my American dream. However, the path to where I am today as a retiree, I would love to share my story, but I don’t believe that my English is good enough to write a book about my experiences in America. I was a single mother for 16 years raised two children and was able to retire comfortably at the age of 55. I would very much love to share my story of how I achieved the American dream to encourage young women or even young men regardless they are American born or immigrants that everything is possible if you just follow some rules. I envy Jimmy that he is able to put his immigrant life experiences in a book. Even though I have achieved the American dream and have travelled to 13 countries by myself alone in 8 months right after my retirement and before pandemic, I doubt I could ever achieve the goal to write a book. Will it be my last regret when I am no longer on this earth?

Thanks for posting this, it was very interesting and enjoyable to me. I've wondered where Jian-Yang's acting & Silicone Valley character came from on the show -- so it was nice to see here that he's a true fusion man, and a decently cool guy -- and is very open and honest about his life, and self-deprecating. I'm a new fan of him, and I see from this that I'm not the only one! He has some great stand up videos here also! In general, I love how he is not afraid to poke fun at his own race, and our globe's rich cultural differences and foibles and funnyness -- especially in this age of hyper-racism-sensitivity -- I think humor is key for all of our healing. ("My rap band was 1.5 Asian guys and 1.5 Black guys" HAHA! Kumbaya!) As a kid, and any day, we have all heard plenty of HURTFUL racist jokes -- but I think it's healing humor therapy to share our good clean FUN racist jokes! Good job to HBO producers on this, which were a bit brave to include (Jian-Yang's character is an unapologetic racist against other Asians, and fat white Erlich's, after all!) Good job to the Google interviewer also! As Red Green said: "We're all in this together!"

jimmy o. yang is just about the most attractive guy. i am 60 and so few people have pulled this off winning this level of goodness in personal appeal when interviewed on television. i was just at ucsd the place he graduated from for 8 years last year and so many people there are chinese or abc half of the students are. everybody is just like jimmy, i love the place. princeton is not a good place john hopkins is just ok yale is alot like ucsd. ucsb was a good place to go to school, ucla people seemed alittle cold but capable.
"I try not to use being Asian as a crutch!" while making a ton of jokes about facing racism and being an outcast for being Asian, he still does not try to play the victim! Respect!!!!

Just give me a cut for making this excellent recommendation. Sponsor Jimmy O Yang Google! Make history like Gary Vee with K Swiss shoes....
Very good talk. Thanks! And yeah, just get on with doing what you are keen on and getting more projects. You'll get where you are supposed to get there one day, And as director Jon M Chu of Crazy Rich Asians said, if you want to be a director, just go and direct. A video on iPhone, stage play, whatever. Build that skill set.

Well said. Jimmy is so real and that makes his comic delivery relatable. Love him.
Wow, you should write movie or book reviews (not kidding).

NOT NOW JIAN YANG! NOT NOW!
XDDDD
I think Jimmy is authentic, like him being that way
I thought that similarly - when he talked about that difficult conversation he had with his dad about not wanting to pursue a career in finance, not to trivialize the coming out process, and the difficulties that the LGBTQIA community faces - but that was a coming out story with its own merit.
This was actually a really good interview and insightful. Props to the lady interviewer as well for her prep and questions. She did a great job!
Also love how he doesn't complain and always focuses on what HE can do to make things better.
Born in Hong Kong, raised in Canada. I share Jimmy's sentiments about how Hong Kong people feel superior to other chinese.
Feels like every country has a city which feels superior to others
I meam HK existed outside the country.
haha it's so true though. a lot of HK people hate china and therefore look down on mainland chinese people
indeed HK is superior, when u undeerstand how China works. but maybe no more 10 years later, no more free press, free speech, freedom for adacemy research, just an other Chineae city, mind controlled by CCP
@@izurite ever since the new security law there already hasn't been anymore free press
What a beautiful person is Jimmy! So inspiring and yet so real at the same time! Love his personality!
Gretchen Howard, take a bow ma'am. You are the best host I've seen in a while. Learnd, Witty and No-nonsense.
I like him. With that kind of personality, it’s so happy and comfortable to hear him talking.
Securing a job as an immigrant world wide is really difficult, how do everyone expect us to survive
You’re right, but without working getting salaries how else can you pay your bills ?
Permit me to intrude, have you heard about an innovation called bitcoin and how a distinguished man called me Larry Kent Burton is helping immigrants not only in America but all around the world generate income and better their standard of living
Point of correction he doesn’t only help immigrants, I am an American citizen and I have had a streak of successful investments with him, he is just the best at financial matters
This all sounds amazing, I would also like a slice of this pie, how can I contact him please?
INSTAGRAM
he basically just showed up there in fancy pajamas
Lol wit the swag
@@5dlos that’s the jimmy we all know-
Was looking for this comment, thank you
I noticed that when he first sat down. I thought maybe is a new fashion suit.
Wow... I can’t believe how similar my life is with Jimmy’s. I’m born in HK, came to the US in 2000, barely spoke English, no Asian friends, hung out with the exact same race of people as my buddy, went to UCSD and majored in Economics... and hated finance. Just wow....
Who actually watched the whole thing?
Close. I just skipped all the parts where the Google engineers tried to tell their own life stories as a buildup to actually asking a question.
Me. Even the Google people asking questions.
I wanted to listen something to help me sleep. End up actually watching it all. He's brilliant
I just listened to it
I could only take her voice for about 20 seconds.
Jimmy O. Yang makes anyone look brilliant!!!! He's so intelligent and amazing 😁 I love his comedy 😊
And his books.
because Jin Yang is also a stereotypical character
He deserves more credit than he is getting. I love his comedy and how smart and honest he is about it. I think comedians before him who made similar jokes did not make it because alot of Americans have no idea what Asian Parents are like, especially chinese parents and so they miss the point.
I actually listened to the entire show. Didn’t know how funny he was!
Same, instant fan, he was also great on silicon valley
I guess one very important quality that you need to have as a foreigner, or minority in this country is to be comfortable and confident with yourself and with who you are, like what jimmy has shown in this interview. As a Chinese immigrant who came to the states after becoming an adult, I used to be a FOB - well, might as well still be - I learned from my American friends that I need to embrace who I am. I find that I gain more respect that way than when I tried so hard to shy away from anything that will label me as a foreigner.
What makes you different makes you stronger.
Keep up the good work Jimmy, keep representing Asians in the media. You're doing noble work
That first audience question and, especially, Jimmy's response to it… so good!
Jimmy is so realistic. He is the pioneer in DEI initiative. I love that he calls out his journey as a new immigrant. I resonate a lot with what he said about how he was excluded by his own people.
He seems like a really cool, down to earth guy that would be awesome to hang out with. 😁
Compared to the humor, his confidence is something that I am jealous of more.
Oh man "if you smoke enough weed, you transcend asian kid to stoner kid" that is gold!
I LMFAO on that for good 5 min.
I actually knew a kid like that.

" Some kind of peace there... it was good to know that there is a part of the world that I can always feel that way" Jimmy O Yang
THIS!!! so heartwarming :))))
This guy is smart, responsible, not afraid to work hard and determined. He was born to be an American. Mad respect for him!
Those are all typical asian values and characteristics
American superiority and arrogance don't make this world a better place.
My respect and learned from this video, thank you. I lived half a decade and stuck in life now. Thanks for the inspiration
Excellent Host! I'm so impressed with her calm composed energy.
What research? She read his book. That's what they're discussing
He so articulate and humble.
Lol
I didn't learn how hard it was to be an Asian male until i took an Asian American class in college.
This guy has such a charisma.. so natural
33:25 that's why I love this guy. I can relate so much to this.
Gotta respect how *well researched* the interviewer is.
I feel His New York accent really helps set him apart from other comedians, in fact you can still his hear his asian accent behind it a little bit, making it even more unique
Except his accent is from LA
It's not. Even though he's from LA that's not an LA accent
Great content! Congratulations to the interviewer who is very well prepared and Jimmy for being eloquent at the same time Well grounded, as well as the audience who seem to be so engaging. Kudos to the ones who asked great questions!
Yes, the host lady is also very smart and good !
Crazy Rich Asians is our own Asian black panther, man that hits home.
LMFAO last time I checked, Crazy Rich Asians did poorly in China.
@@kevchu8045 I don’t think Black Panther did well in Africa

Wow! his shanghainese pronunciation is superbly excellent, it's totally genuine!
Good job!
and not hot dog..very important it's a hot dog and not hot dog... it's tecchology

I love this guy. So chill. Wish we were friends. Oh yeah, hilarious and very witty too
Humble and authentic. Thanks JY
This is such a fantastically real interview. I love it.
Same for me.
"Make them think its their idea - maybe by telling them a story " - so true this works.
This was great. It was humorous, it was informative, it was worth the time. I love Jimmy.
Very articulate this wonderful human being J, I never knew Jimmy or seen the show until this day on youtube and seen scenes of SC and immediately became a loyal fan and more insight one on one great interview Gretchen and shout to Jimmy you are motivation to everyone and your culture GOD BLESS ya brotha!!!
Are his grandmother's recipes for octopus in this book?
Silicon valley ?
Only 7 of the 8!
It's a water animal
He is a true entertainer! Love his comedy- I see a big future for him and will look for his performances.
This is basically 50% stories of the book.
Wow, great interview! I can resonate with so many of Jimmy's experiences. He is an inspiration. Keep up the good work. I look forward to the day when more cool funny asian representation is available in Hollywood
"It's probably better to disappoint my parents for a couple of years than to disappoint myself for the rest of my life."
- Jimmy O. Yang 14:30 gives me chills every time!
Jimmy's such a funny/carefree guy so to hear him say something so deep/personal is chilling
Speak to your kids in whatever language you have from the very beginning. My kid is pale but speaks perfect Spanish, preserving his Mexican heritage. I'm learning Mandarin with him, I hope he has people to speak with soon.
Incredible host! She did a way better interviewing Jimmy Yang than the Jimmy Fallon or Kimmel or any of those late night show hosts! ❤️
agreed :) really enjoyable to watch =)
Stephen Colbert interviewing Jimmy O Yang was the most awkward among them all.
jimmy o. yang is just about the most attractive guy. i am 60 and so few people have pulled this off winning this level of goodness in personal appeal when interviewed on television. i was just at ucsd the place he graduated from for 8 years last year and so many people there are chinese or abc half of the students are. everybody is just like jimmy, i love the place. princeton is not a good place john hopkins is just ok yale is alot like ucsd. ucsb was a good place to go to school, ucla people seemed alittle cold but capable.
Such a lovely interview, great host too !
OK, I never watched Silicon Valley but, I think I'll give it a shot this weekend, I like this dude, seems legit.
"I try not to use being Asian as a crutch!" while making a ton of jokes about facing racism and being an outcast for being Asian, he still does not try to play the victim! Respect!!!!
Okay Google, am I the only one thinking here? Why not give Jimmy a job at Google as a brand ambassador? Get a video of him using Google calendar to set up his comedy shows, etc... Just give me a cut for making this excellent recommendation. Sponsor Jimmy O Yang Google! Make history like Gary Vee with K Swiss shoes....
Mano Nguyen pretty sure ouyang dislikes those corporate life, so ya...
Because Google does not need a brand ambassador.

Really nice talk... I enjoyed listening.
Jimmy is very DTE and entertaining to listen to. Wishing him all the best with his career wherever it takes him.
Build that skill set.
man, this guy is awesome, biggest hurdle for me at school as an immigrant is this non-acceptance between abc asians and fob asians, so glad to see he is making it
For what its worth - its a human thing - not Chinese, Indian or African, I was born in Ghana, same story. Nietzsche was embarrassed by Germans. Not sure what the source is but there's something about others 'betraying' ones sophistication. I think its a blessing in disguise; otherwise we'll just all form small subcultures with a spike-protein-like response to anything thats not 'us'*
