My first taste of whiskey(that I remember) was while they played that game. None of the kids were supposed to bother the adults, but my tooth hurt. My Dad's solution was whiskey. For a more serious David Allen Coe I'd suggest "The Ride" Many of his songs did not get radio play because of controversy with his lyrics and with some of his statements.
Also let me suggest another song similar to your discussion at the start of this song. Alan Jackson's "I don't even know your name"
    A fun reaction.

    1. This first one he included dead dogs, farms, and Christmas (along with getting drunk, mother, prison, trucks and trains) and it goes like this:
Ever since the dog got drunk and died and Mama went to prison
Why nothing ‘round this farm has been the same
And John, you know when Mom broke out last Christmas
She drove that whole get away laundry truck right into a train
    2. This one, Goodman only included: Mother, prison, farms, trucks, and trains. And it goes like this:
Ever since the day my mama went to prison
Ain’t nothing ‘round this farm has been the same
And you know that when they let her out last Tuesday
She drove her goddamn truck into a train

I can remember hearing this while sitting somewhere in a bar in 1975 and when the verse that made this a "perfect country and western song" came on, everyone would loudly sing with it and everyone would YELL, "She got runned over by a damned old train!" I don't know who Steve Goodman is but he sure has received a lot of publicity through this song. BTW, Coe was also the person who first recorded Tennessee Whiskey. He recorded it in 1981 and George Jones recorded it in 1983. The version by Jones made it nearly to the top of the charts but it took Chris Stapleton to blow it right into the stratosphere. I loved your reaction to She Never Even Called me by my Name. I watched one reaction to this where the guy totally didn't get it. He maintained a solemn face throughout that entire nonsensical verse and then his reaction was "what happened here? Did his mother get killed??? That's really sad. Why the up-tempo music?" That comment made me want to bang my head against a wall. Good grief. He had no concept of how ludicrous the verse is when Goodman just crammed all the elements of a country song into one verse which made him come out with something as stupid as "I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison." Thank heavens, you are among those who reacted to it and actually got it!

I ABSOLUTELY loved your reaction! Haha. Btw there is a popular chain steak restaurant in Illinois where years ago, all the waitress staff would just stop serving and all would dance to this one song only in the isles. So fun!!

He was saying he was always compared to all those other singers but he was willing to hang around and sing anyway.

I didn’t read all the comments, but where the other “names” were, that was the actual artists singing them…Waylon Jennings, Charlie Pride, and Merle Haggard

I have seen him live twice. Awesome both times. Best part was they were both in a bar setting, not a big stadium show, you would have thought he was playing for tens of thousands of people though.

This song is an absolute classic. Thanks for reacting to it. The term racist is dramatically overused today but it absolutely applies to a lot of David Allen Coe's music and comments. That is why this is the only one of his song most people have ever heard

We always just called it The Train Song. That is much easier to say (and to remember) when you have consumed a large amount of bourbon. All the local bands knew it and the entire bar would sing along as loudly as possible! A great time was had by all.

Idk if you'll ever see this but this is a southern bar song with the crowd doing ad libs. It's known by every southern man and woman and it's the most fun to sing with all your barmates. After every "let me" the crowd yells "let me, let me let me
" and After that the whole song is sung by everyone. If I get the chance I'll tape it and send it to you.
