Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Laundry off grid? this week the answer to that question is yes!! Tiny space but we have big plans hehe what a transformation- this room has so many uses. We are so happy to have the space to do laundry in our cabin, workout, host guests, storage for the essentials- OH and not to forget all the plumbing, water heaters and water tanks in the “utility” closet. My FAV is the Look 👀 on Bella & Izzy’s face “well, they’re at it again!” It’s the same look I get when Phil 🙀 watches me cook and I open a can 🥫🍝 of tomato 🍅 paste for making sauce. He thinks I’m using HIS cat food! 😹
An idea for your awesome spare room: build a collapsible desk into the underside of the Murphy bed, so when the bed is away, you can pull down a desk to work at.

After spending all that money on Bella’s bed she’s now claimed the Murphy bed as hers. The room is brilliant. 💕

I liked the cabinet door blue. 😂😂 I had a friend who thought her dishwasher was metallic blue and was upset because it was supposed to match her stove and fridge. when it was installed (when her condo was built) the plastic just wasn’t removed, but it had been from the other appliances. I showed her and she was kind of embarrassed but I told her I found out about it by my own trial and error! 😂😂
I don’t think they had to pay for Bella’s bed. I checked the prices though…… yikes. We have dog beds very similar to those, but for a fraction of the price. I also get $10 crib sheets and cover our dog beds. So much easier to wash than the actual bed 😉

I'm with Jazzy, I always have a "house" toolkit that has just the basics in a nice toolbag/toolbox. Things like hammer, screw drivers, tape measure, box cutter...

It’s super cool that you have a shed for all your tools, but it is a good idea to keep a few basic tools inside the house so you don’t have to run outside in minus 30° Celsius in winter just to grab a screwdriver or utility knife.
When you’ve tried to live for years without a washing machine and then moving to a new place with one, the ease of getting one’s clothes washed feels like a true miracle. I really understand how you feel about your new set up for washing and drying clothes. Your utility/extra bedroom looks very nice and cosy as well. Any guests will be happy campers.

Fantastic job on the room. Love the hidey panel for the fuse box and pipes. Bella's Face said it all so sad she had to leave the new bed. Shows how good it is.
The room looks great. One thing I would add, that would also look great. If you were to move the cabinet inline with the countertop, you could put in a tall storage spot behind it. Mops, brooms, I did it in mine and it works great.

Congrats on the washer and dryer! Quick tip: You should be able to swap the side in which the doors open on those front-load machines so they open toward each other. It makes the transfer of clothes from the washer to the dryer much easier :)

my washer was build with leftdoor and the dryer with rightdoor :). All i had to do was to position them the right way :)

Seeing the problems the stackables caused in the laundry room in the building I live in, so relieved you decided against the washer and dryer in the closet. Much easier access for repairs and doing the actual laundry! The room looks amazing and the functionality is perfect. Well done!

I remember going to the laundromat. And I remember the first time I got an apartment that had its own laundry! Oh my god.
I never gave it a thought, but of course you had to pack it all up, drive to find a town... then find a laundry and spend hours sitting there. I totally understand how happy you are to get all that time back for things you'd rather be doing.

Nice job ladies on creating a multipurpose room. You didn't have to hire a pro, you had Crystal, who in my opinion is a professional.
Ikea used to make a nice little tool kit. I bought one years ago and keep it in a kitchen drawer so it's always easy to get at. It has a hammer, with removable rubber cover so you can use it as a mallet, multi-bit screwdriver, pliers, adjustable wrench, all in an orange and white box with translucent lid.
You made my coffee so much better watching you two on a Sunday morning.

When I started watching this week's vlog, I was horrified that you put the washer/dryer next to the electrical panel. But then I saw how you built the false walls to conceal the water hoses, I was very impressed with your ingenious ideas. Love that Bella now thinks the Murphy bed is her bed (my dog feels that the bed is hers and I'm "allowed" to sleep in it, but only on the sides, as she takes up the middle of the bed).
You guys need to stop popping the finished pictures in the opening promo... SAVE THAT to keep folks watching as a surprise. It's like showing us what is inside the present, before handing us a wrapped box for our weekly birthday. Regardless, great job! Hugs from Ontario. :)

My daughter's bed had those slats with plastic ends on. They lasted about 3 months. We replaced them with solid timber slats. Beautiful job on your utility room. ❤

Should check the code you may have to move the laundry. You need a 1m clearance directly in front of the panel at all times. The rule is actually in the Canadian Electrical Code.
I was wondering about that, having a water source anywhere near an electrical panel sounds like a bad idea.

Yep as per above comments Canadian code requires 1m working space section 2-308 CEC 2021.
Water and electrical should never meet. Does the laundry under the electrical panel meet code ?
The two of you did an amazing job transforming that room.
My dad is off grid too and has solar. He also got a washer and dryer, but had a genius idea. He has an alternator hooked up to his dryer, and it actually creates energy as the dryer is drying so that you lose less solar. I would look into that if you’re looking to save a little more energy in the winter ❤
The washer and dryer I. Fronting your electrical panel is a code violation in most places , requiring at least 4-6 foot clearance to get to the panel and having a washing by machine next to and near to your electrical panel is a problem waiting to happen but enjoy you ladies trying to figure every thing out
You can't put anything in front of the electrical panel. There has to be about a meter of free space in front of it! Oops! It looks great though. Good job.
Why?
The doors on the washer and dryer are usually set up for the washer on the left and dryer on the right. You may want to consider switching them. On some brands the doors themselves can be switched.
It looks amazing! Laundromats are a vibe but nothing beats being able to do your own laundry.
Happy to do my own laundry on my time while I am also doing another task. Much more efficient to have washer/dryer in your home.😊🐶
It is a bad idea to put your washer right under your electrical panel… that is not code and very dangerous. You guys rock glad to Krystal eye is healed up
Question for future me reference, would it be okay to keep it on the same wall (ex. Moved to the left to be hidden inside the cupboard), or on a separate wall entirely?
@@boigeorge1149 You can't have anything within 1m (3') in front of it. The panel that's covering it would be against code even if the washer and dryer weren't there.
@JasonWin what's the reasoning behind it needing to be a certain distance away from the electrical panel is it just so if the electric panel needs fixed that it has easy access? Or is there another reason?
@@feliciar2773 I believe it's for access in an emergency but I'm a Plumber, not an Electrician so I know the code but not necessarily the reasoning for it.

And, YES - keep a set of tools in the house. A pouch for common hand tools and bag with supplies and larger tools.

Since your new to having a washer and dryer move it from circuit beaker so don't have problems with fires and should make it a pull out ,so can maintain lint and water build up that starts fires- so have to keep them clean

Just replacing my 20 year washer dryer with new ones was enough to get me sitting and watching the laundry for the first week or so. I can't imagine the impact of going from nothing for so many years.

9.15 ish - I got those slabs on my bed. I've had my bed frame for over 10 years. They work brilliantly and I've also moved house a lot in that time so it's really handy to have them easy pop in and out.
