  • Members debated the key purpose of the Post Office (Horizon System) Offences Bill on Monday 13 May. The bill will quash the convictions of postmasters and others in England, Wales and Northern Ireland who were charged with theft, fraud and related offences as a consequence of the Post Office Horizon IT scandal.

Jason Beer KC, Edward Henry KC and many others deserve knighthoods.
Jarnail Singh, Angela von den Bogard, Rodric Williams, Paula Vennels and many others deserve imprisonment!
It won't happen though. That's the greatest injustice!

Suggest Alan Bates is awarded the George Cross - for bravery as a citizen. He has thoroughly deserved it.

A thoroughly decent display of the proper workings of the parliament. An example of how the Lords and the Commons can work together to deliver justice for the nation's citizens - without over-reaching or diminishing the independence of the judiciary. Well done on using legislation to deliver justice that has been too long denied. Very well done.

I feel the board members of both Post office and Fujitsu will never see prison. If they don't it will show people that there is one law for the rich and connected and one for everybody else. The Post office scandal is everyone's worst nightmare the courts and judges must hand out maximum sentences in every case that comes before it. To do anything less will signal to the world that what has happened to the sub postmasters & mistresses is except able in our society. Compensation for the victims should also be coming from Fujitsu even if that means they go bankrupt. I also hope Mr Bates receives a knighthood in the future.

To those so horrendously subjected to this atrocity please know that not only do you now clearly have the compassion and support of your countrymen but indeed international support. I am writing from the United States and you should know that Mr. Bates v The Post Office was aired here. Additionally, I have been watching the Post Office Inquiry and I hope that it is not too painful for you to also view. You now have the incomparable Sir Wyn Williams and Mr. Beer KC as your advocates. I believe and deeply hope that your 20-year-plus nightmare is coming to an end. Unless the unthinkable happens you are going to receive repayment of the moneys that the Post Office stole from you AND a very large payment of damages. What's more, I think some of these criminals, yes criminals are going to prison!

Yes, I totally agree @dinacox1971. I too watched Mr Bates vs The Post Office here in Eastern United States not that long ago. I also started watching The Inquiry. I was/am appalled at what the post office did to all these people!!!! And Mr Griffiths killed himself because of what the post office did to him!! RIP Sir😢
All of the post office so called professional leaders NEED to be put in jail and ALL their bonuses taken away from them!!!! And they need to grow some **ll* and ADMIT what they did to the UK and televise it!!
Thank you Mr Bates for starting this and NEVER letting up on these criminals!!!! 🙏💔😢🙏🙏❤️❤️

You are lucky in NZ and Australia ,this is unusual for the House of Lords to get things done hastily and with compassion. They are unelected swill ,most have the position as payback or friends with the so-called public school system .we need a senate like the Australian government, I think it was Don Chip who famously said (keep the bastdards honest ).

Lord Denning MR once enunciated the maxim that One must come to court with clean hands. Post Office has clearly shown how they have neglected to have done so. Here's willing criminal, including corporate manslaughter, charges are brought against those at PO, Fujitsu and whosoever else that caused ruin upon the lives of postmistresses and postmasters

Justice? There will be none, until the perpetrators are made to suffer by the law, as their deliberate victims. It has been proved that the Horizon system was not only faulty but deliberately interfered with to create the means to prosecute innocent sub postmasters. That senior individuals came to realise that, and refused to address it all the time continuing with prosecutions they knew had to be compromised, was utterly criminal, especially when the extra income the Post Office gathered went to bolster management bonuses. However this Bill being discussed is granted, the implementation of it remains questionable and because of the total lack of trust in the government, and their usual reluctance when it comes to any kind of compensation, I fear that the sub postmasters will still face obdurate bureaucracy to get what is long overdue.

It's our accepted, historic method of creating an Act of Parliament. It is a way of ensuring the necessary checks and balances are enshrined when the Bill passes through both Houses before receiving Royal Assent, at which stage it becomes a Act.

      The king.
We live in an innocent until proven guilty legal system in the main.
The moment these convictions became unsafe the post masters should of been released pending a retrial or equital.
It beggars me how nobody went looking the tens of thousands that the post office said went missing. Where were the flash cars, the holidays abroad, the assets bought with the alleged stolen money?
This scandal will reach as high as ministers in Westminster, but I doubt the inquiry or subsequent trials will look further than the amnesiac post office bosses.

@@gf88888 The post masters had to pay any errors out of their own pockets. Their own money they should be able to show was legit.
Where was the missing stock, the bundles of cash under the bed?
The judges bought the “Robust” horizon program without evidence and sentenced without evidence. I do wonder if ministers had influenced the judges with promises of peerages.
I’m no judge, but even I would ask, where the money went.
