Captain Paul works with new boat owner Rich on slipping his new to him Grand Banks 36’ single screw boat with no thrusters. After 4 days of training Rich solo’s his boat into its slip.
A boat hook is one of the most critical tools to have. - “Don’t leave home without it” 👍
correct
And to the gentleman practicing docking, excellent job - Tony
I was a little confused coming from an i/o boat as to the reverse bump without spinning the wheel, but realizes from you other video that reverse, because of the counter clockwise rotation of the prop and no wash across the rudder, pulls the boat to starboard.. now i get it!
Yes, reverse is a bit tricky and not a lot of control, but once you figure out what works with your boat it can be very useful in operating it
That was worth watching. A lot of people are intimidated by single engine shaft drive. You made it look easy.
I learned in one with no thrusters and struggled with twin screws myself
This video/training is invaluable. Great teaching Paul! Tony
Nice work Paul! Good coaching!
Glad you enjoyed it
I practiced daily for a couple weeks in a shallow spillway off the Detroit river when I 1st got my grand banks 36, but I have two Lehmans
little differant with two engines but it all takes practice
the Grand Banks has a 4 foot keel, when you do a turn into the current it can grab that keel like a sail and take you sideways quite a few feet, you have to be ready for it and compensate for it, it will happen real quick, especially a u turn on the Detroit river or where there is a strong current ..that bigass keel is a reason to put out a sea anchor too if you want to sit and fish unanchored so the current don't grab the keel and take you on a sideways ride at times
Yes 100%
Yep. What most people don’t understand is that it takes short high bursts of power to kick the boat around then a reduction of power to maintain the heading. Great job.
Ya most don’t care to learn
Nice work - slow and steady
‘At’s a perty boat!! Thanks for the video. Great stuff!!👍
Thanks for watching!
You’ll love a bow thruster though- where I boat in the PNW, I have to account for currents and wind, so I love my bow and stern thrusters. This is a great video, thanks!
Yes he will love it for sure but glad to see him learning without it.
Thank you Captain 👨✈️
Great job, must of had a great teacher 👏
Let's not go that far LOL thanks got my 100 ton today
Your mentoring skills are unsurpassed - building confidence is a skill great teamwork
He was easy becasue he had no bad habbits
Thank you for this great video. This is so helpful.
Thanks for watching
Definitely easier without wind and current but the theory was demonstrated. How come no mention of prop walk to explain the physics of it? I have a GB32 and when in reverse the stern will "walk" to starboard making counterclockwise turns very easy. I noticed that all turns in this vid were counterclockwise. Try making the same maneuvers in the clockwise direction. Very difficult especially when you have an adverse wind blowing the bow down.
Great Job 👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
When mastered,he will back that single screw in the slip.
great technique
Glad you think so!
I learned a lot from this video! Thanks Captain!
Rich looks like captain Quint from jaws manhandling his boat the orca...............
right
Pretty cool….
I need to be doing this Chief
I am not afraid…actually can’t wait
But…I will wait for a nice wind day!
Your boat handles like a dream brother
Heck of a job. 👍
He did a great job
Never turn your wheel while in gear
Nice video very helpful. do you take into account your prop walk?
Foday Yillah 👍
Works fine when not a scrap of wind is blowing. What do you do with ten knots from any direction?
That’s not true but what ever you think. You cannot operate a single screw without using these moves in wind. It takes lots of practice and not easy to learn. Thanks for watching and God Bless
If this were a left handed prop, what would the move be for backing out of this exact slip?
Would you just back all the way out the fairway?
Well it depends in a GB 36 I would Turn it like I did that one. Prop wash is an effect but it’s not a huge factor. Every boat is different. But I would not change on a single GB 36
Right handed prop?
Yes sir
Does the boat tend back to starboard?
Yes it does walk that way
SO WHAT DIRECTION DOES THE BOAT BACK TO? PORT OR STARBOARD ? HOW DOES THAT FIGURE IN?
Natural pull is to starboard, once you get a feel for it you can use it to your advantage.
So that boat backs to starboard, which works great for his slip setup. I noted you had him using the rudder when in reverse. Does that boat respond to the rudder when in reverse?
not really but every little bit helps on a single screw
Why not show backing in to the slip? Slow is pro. What is sound signal for leaving a slip Captain?
He has not learned that yet, but he will and we will do the video. I did show him how to do it we just ran out of time.
Who did the install on the new Bow Thruster ? Would be great to have that info in my contact list . Thanks
Florida Bow thrusters is who put this one in.
@@NoRegretsLifestyle Great Thanks ! Appreciate the reply Paul
Why 2 sticks with a single shaft?
One is transmission (forward and reverse) other is throttle
Foday Yillah 👍
