- Are you interested in learning how to kickbox? If so, Ive got you covered! In this guide, I will
walk you through five basic kickboxing combinations that are perfect for beginners. Before we
dive into the combos, lets go over some essential tips to ensure you have a strong foundation
in this combat sport.
First and foremost, maintaining a strong stance is crucial. Imagine you want to jump as high as
you can, and thats approximately the width you need between your feet. For right-handed
individuals like myself, step forward with your left foot. Both feet should be facing forward,
knees slightly bent, weight centered, and hands up with elbows tucked in tight. Don't forget to
protect your chin by tucking it in, as its the most vulnerable area.
Now, let's move on to the kickboxing combinations:
Combination 1: Left Jab Kick to the Leg
As you step in, land your left foot and throw a punch. Immediately following the punch, execute
a kick to the leg. Remember, the punch and kick should flow seamlessly.
Combination 2: Jab Cross Switch Kick
Start with a jab and cross, then perform a quick switch of your feet. This sets you up for a
powerful kick using your rear leg. Aim for the opponent's leg or liver for an effective strike.
Combination 3: Jab Cross Hook + Right Kick or Knee
After stepping in, deliver a knee strike to the body, followed by a jab, cross, and hook. Choose
between a low kick or a knee strike, depending on the situation and proximity to your
opponent.
Combination 4: Jab Cross Hook Cross Switch Kick
This combination involves six steps and is the most complex of the five. Begin with jab, cross,
hook, cross, and then swiftly switch your feet. Finally, execute a powerful kick using your rear
leg.
Combination 5: Punch-Leg Kick Combo
This simple yet effective combo involves two and a half steps. Throw a one-two punch
combination, and as you retract your right hand, deliver a leg kick. This technique catches your
opponent off guard and forces them to defend against the punch while receiving a leg kick
simultaneously.
By mastering these five kickboxing combinations, you'll develop a solid foundation and improve
your kickboxing skills. Remember to practice proper form, maintain a strong stance, and focus
on executing each move with precision.
Whether you're interested in kickboxing for self-defense, fitness, or pursuing mixed martial arts
(MMA), these combos will enhance your training and help you become a better kickboxer.
Don't forget to incorporate other techniques and explore additional moves, such as those found
in Muay Thai, to expand your repertoire.
So, lace up your gloves, find a training partner or a heavy bag, and start honing your kickboxing
skills today! With dedication and practice, you'll be well on your way to becoming a proficient
kickboxer in no time.
