She's brilliant not only when playing, but also when explaining complex trade-offs and decisions she makes while playing. She's definitely "reflective."
It’s difficult to exhaust how impressive she is. All worlds conquered in the standard classical repertoire, yet she moves into new territory. Like Miles Davis, she is fearless.
@@paulbraunstein2290 I actually did, had to play the very old family violin first to show that I was interested. I picked up movements and motion very well and fast. The problem for me is that I am born nearly deaf in both ears, 80% loss, and for a string instrument and me to work I'd need someone by my side all the time for many years before my fine sense of feel can feel the very small differences for a tuned or un tuned note. I do play clarinet however, bought it years later when I was maybe 17, 4 years later I ended up getting a full ride scholarship for clarinet. I only went one year, 22 credits, first chair clarinet orchestra and wind ensemble as a freshman, But, it was just way too difficult for me trying to understand the many "sound" related things involved. Today I'd happy to go back, some twenty years later, as I have a much better understanding. Credit Jacquilen Du Pre for my re interest and passion for classical music when I bought the clarinet at a paw shop (A Selmer Signature for $80) I, of course, didn't know for years that I happened to have a very good clarinet. Now, I'm trying to get the Buckun CG Carbon Clarinet set as it's carbon fiber tech is beneficial for me. But, years away before I could afford such an item. BTW, my absolute favorite piece so far is from 1950 Brahms Opus 108 Adagio by Horowitz and Milstein (I have it on Music CD mag). This particular way it was played is absolutely beautiful. I've even played it many times the say way as him on clarinet. I don't hear anyone else play it the say way as in this particular recording. ruclips.net/video/95cURVznb6s/видео.html
I love how when a person who is passionate about their craft speaks of and describes it in the most poetic of ways. The tone of your voice literally conveys the same feeling as playing the instrument.. As if you and it are indistinguishable; one from the other.
3:20 -- How? Her left hand, wrist and arm are still but she vibratos clearly and measuredly... Is that all with her finger tips? Teach me, Sempai. I'd love a video on how she vibratos.
I wish I had another 10 lifetimes so I could play violin at a very high skill level. Instruction like this makes me realize how much is going on tecnically when violin it's being played at that level of excellence..
These short videos help me very much to understand and enter in the mood of the Partitas. Contemporary music requires an additional effort of understanding to classical listeners, the same effort we did when we approached the classical at the beginning ... and we know it’s worth it. HH keep on posting.
Wonderful video! I’ve been learning classical guitar for a few months now, so learning about the nuance in other instruments is really fun. I can finally appreciate it more. I’m guilty of discovering Ms. Hahn through Two Set, but will keep my eye out for any more content like this. Professional, educational, wonderful. Time to go listen to more of her recordings!
Thank you for explaining this phrasing technique for playing this piece of music so well Hilary Hahn. I am not a violinist, but I do love listening to highly skilled musicians of the instrument, such as yourself, playing the beautiful music that you seemingly play so effortlessly.
The drone note you described is a favorite device used by guitarists & referred to as a pedal tone, presumably referring to the use of a piano sustain pedal. Chic technique.
I’m watching how you are joining your notes up it’s so educational for me. As I watch all your concerto performance before my practice to instill it into my musical memory . Love you so much hearing you is larger than the ocean 🌊.
Hilary, your are my new genius. Perhaps exists more instrumentalis that can play more technical or fasted o ....... whatelse. But you have the spiritual essence of the sensibility and fresh kindless of the master at the all times. When I listen ( or feel you ) like I have a conversation with them. I love from my deep inner of my soul. we love us. (o)
why are you so beatiful? like your appearance, the way you speak, and how down to earth you are. Glad i know you from twoset violin, and i am a fan since then
I am a beginner in violin and maybe a little old to start but I will put all my strength and the class is wonderful all this content needs more views And I need to practice
Interesting opening line....and next line.....It's like a V chord thing. Variations on the V chord. 1st line is Bluesy that resolves to the C#. Then the second line resolves to the D in a A7 chord which makes it a suspended sound. Like a hunched up cat. Put an A7th chord behind the lines and it makes more sense.... it's real bluesy. Go on youtube and find an A7th chord...have it loop while you play the first two lines.....it makes more sense...it works depending on how you phrase it. All the notes are variations of a A7th parent chord. Some notes are inside and some outside. The first line....A,C, D, C#...each note creates a chord variation of the parent "A 7th" chord. A = Tonic, C = sharp 9, D = sus 4th, C# = maj 3rd....here's the feeling. "A" note is resolved, C note - Sharp 9 is very tense, D note- sus 4th is less tense, C# - maj 3rd is more resolved. That's without even phrasing the line. I love those sounds. I hear them as a cat stalking his prey. Lots of tension. The little bits of chromatic gives it movement.....like little feet stalking....and that's just the first two lines. It's similiar to a jazz thing. This type of writing is like jazz improvisation. You could do the same type thing with a "A" diminished scale over a A min 7th chord. That scale doesn't change the flat 3rd (C....there's no C# in that dim scale...a c# would change the parent chord from an A min 7th to a A7th...as long as the scale doesn't have a C# you can use it over the A min 7th chord...that goes for any scale! A "Ab" whole tone scale works the same way over the A min 7th chord.) .....it's just variations of the parent chord. A jazz player will use bits of the scale and resolve.....that way there's not too much tension before resolution. A genius teacher named Dennis Sandole used 3 rules for this type of writing. He taught Coltrane and many other great players. It seems to fit on this tune....that style of writing.
Those are some really perceptive and interesting comments. Thanks for sharing that. I also come from a jazz background so I tend to hear things in that context harmonically. Again, thanks for your thoughts.

Does anyone else notice how it sounds like she's doing vibrato, but you can't really see her hand moving? Forget about 40 hours a day, she practices 80 hours a day!
Sơn Hà I do not sculpt in marble, yet I am able to stand before the David and enjoy it, and what lies behind it. It is the same here. “In the superior intellect, the hands obey the mind.” - Michelangelo
Thank you for sharing, Hilary! We wanted to let you know that we have added this video to one of our playlists on our RUclips channel. We also would love to invite you to join our online community: facebook.com/groups/globalstringsalliance
How lucky is the composer to have a world class violinist play nonsense. Only a great violinist can make it happen. Bravo Hilary!!! Great playing!!! The composition is best to be described as “cerebral farting” Why she wastes her time with this, I don’t know? Can you compare this to the genius of Bach, Beethoven, Bartok, Ysaye? The “Emperor’s Clothes “ AKA fake talent/illusion. Shipment buy boat “ship high in transit” “SHIT” to avoid access odor.
This might be technically difficult, but it sounds horrible. This is why I prefer baroque. They knew how to make beautiful sounds. And the composers didn't spam everything with instructions. It was the performers job to figure out the ornaments. Give me H.I.F. Biber over one of those modern instrument torturers like this Abril character any time.
She's brilliant not only when playing, but also when explaining complex trade-offs and decisions she makes while playing. She's definitely "reflective."
I'm glad you're adding videos again.
me too. greeting from bali island
It’s difficult to exhaust how impressive she is. All worlds conquered in the standard classical repertoire, yet she moves into new territory. Like Miles Davis, she is fearless.
😇
She's so modest it's beautiful.
Ling Ling speaking to the masses😅
TWOSET
WHOAH ANOTHER LING LING COMMENT! SO NEW!
I don’t see Ling Ling, but I see Ling Ling’s master.
Weird she's not Asian
Consider ourselves very lucky to share this blip in time with Hilary and her generous offerings, what are the odds, really?!
You explained that so well, I don't play any stringed instruments so things like this are not obvious or known and always fascinates me.

Start playing them...then you'd have your mind blown on how difficult they are too play instead off just knowing about them...lol
THE STRING VIB IN 3:20 - wow
Oooh the dissonant polyphony, got the chills!
I love how when a person who is passionate about their craft speaks of and describes it in the most poetic of ways. The tone of your voice literally conveys the same feeling as playing the instrument.. As if you and it are indistinguishable; one from the other.
Thanks for sharing Hilary. Women like you are truly inspirational.
3:20 -- How? Her left hand, wrist and arm are still but she vibratos clearly and measuredly... Is that all with her finger tips? Teach me, Sempai. I'd love a video on how she vibratos.
It’s all adjusting finger pressure on the last joint not position, Midori teaches something similar
Shes doing vibrato like we were taught not to. Lol
Jedi mind trick...
Use your knuckle to initiate the finger motion. It’s a fast vibrato.
All vibrato is dependent on relaxed and flexible fingers, for her it's effortless. 💅
I wish I had another 10 lifetimes so I could play violin at a very high skill level. Instruction like this makes me realize how much is going on tecnically when violin it's being played at that level of excellence..
I'm a simple man. I see Hilary Hahn uploaded again so I clicked again.
It is amazing to me that such a short piece can be so satisfying to hear...

Did anyone else think Hilary was in her 20s but then her achievements wouldn't add up to the years...???
She looks older than her 20s to me, but she has somewhat of a baby face. :p
rania chrysostomou lol the 7 year kid prodigies i think they have these kinds of convos w their teachers before they even know proper grammar 😂
I think she definitely looks like she's in her late 20's.
KurtCobain I thought you were dead Kurt! Whatsupp!
I was shocked when I heard she just turned 41

Being aware of the dipping of string when you finger it is really important- thank you
It's adorable to see how much effort she puts into pronouncing Anton's name correctly
Ya te digo, jejeje
La C española es un puro struggle en sí.
Wonderful and beautiful sound.
Oh wow I just found the most amazing master class with my most loved violinist.
I am delighted that you play so brilliantly a piece by one of my favourite contemporary composers. Thank you very much.
Her technique is just remarkable. It's a joy to listen to her play.
Thank you for explaining this phrasing technique for playing this piece of music so well Hilary Hahn. I am not a violinist, but I do love listening to highly skilled musicians of the instrument, such as yourself, playing the beautiful music that you seemingly play so effortlessly.
Dear master I admire you , remember the time in Medellín Colombia with Sibelius violin concert, was great.
The drone note you described is a favorite device used by guitarists & referred to as a pedal tone, presumably referring to the use of a piano sustain pedal. Chic technique.
You and twoset violin do for violin, what Hikaru has done for chess. And It's so nice to see!
MechaPlays 👍. One of the few like me who play chess and violin...
I’m watching how you are joining your notes up it’s so educational for me. As I watch all your concerto performance before my practice to instill it into my musical memory . Love you so much hearing you is larger than the ocean 🌊.
One of a kind❤️
DIVINE!
Composition is phrasing - and 'violin' practice. Loved your Sibelius!
Thank You very much Ling Ling. You are an amazing person.

Hilary..! BEATYFUL video🇧🇷
Watching her explain makes me smile so much :)
Thank you !!!
This particular concert with the HSO was outstanding as a live performance.
I am a beginner in violin and maybe a little old to start but I will put all my strength and the class is wonderful all this content needs more views

Excellent class!
Todas as falas da Incrível Hilary, que tanto admiramos, deveriam ser reeditadas em português. Certamente as visualizações dobrariam.
Fascinating
You are incredible.
Thanks, Hilary! Great sounds, wise words and nicely presented. That's definitely shareworthy!

What?! There's a vibrato sound on the G and the 2nd finger A at 3:16, but there's no vibrato movement???
Very little wrist movement
You're the best!!!...👏👏👏👏

I really don't understand the finer points of her technique, but I think she is outstanding.

I’m so shocked by the amount of effort she put into violin😂
Me too, but I’m grateful for it! She’s brilliant!
Wtf Hilary you did a vibrato with ur bow without doing vibrato with the hand!!! How?!? At 3:20

These videos are so well shot but they're only 720p I'm a little confused.
