I think you should make a solar catamaran next. Add an acrylic bottom, and you've got yourself a solid floaty. I can be your huckleberry.

    • @Skinflaps_Meatslapper
      @Skinflaps_Meatslapper 3 года назад +10

A solar cat would be doable, you'd have quite a bit more surface area for solar. I think a two person kayak based trimaran with solar panels between the hulls would be a perfect candidate for a useful and practical solar boat. Could get a lot more panel area and only need a single motor compared to a conventional single hull, so the top speed using pure solar would be considerably higher once you figure out the size of the motor and prop pitch. Secondary benefit is that both are good candidates for a small mast furling sail, pretty handy if you get stuck in overcast, and could theoretically drive the motor as a generator for your batteries while you're tooling around with a sail.

This panel can put out close to 100 watts ruclips.net/user/postUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle. The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts. If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

    2. Back as slow as possible "use mirrors"
    3. Turn wheel less than 1/4 turn to keep straight.
    4. Turn in opposite direction to correct trailer direction.
    5. Pull up to straighten out when necessary.

Everything else he carved out of lumber (that I think he harvested from his own property) or wielded togther from surplus steel and he used some tubing he happened to have left over from when he built his house.

I absolutely love your solar boat! If you could double the roof in size and have 4 instead of 2 panels running sideways instead of front to back it could help with the speed. Also, would give a great sun protection to the passengers on the sunny side and make the ride more enjoyable for everyone regardless what side the sun is hitting. It may not be a bad idea to have a battery back up just in case clouds roll over. Sudden coulda happen quiet often in Florida especially from May till October.

There are so many things to think about when backing up a trailer that it gets ridiculous the first few times you try. And there is a BIG difference if the trailer has a single axle or if it has steerable front wheels. Driving forward is pretty simple, just remember to take any sharp turns with a very large marginal. Going backwards is an entirely different thing. With experience it will become pretty easy, but the first few times? Fugedabotit!
One thing you need to know before trying to back up a trailer is to figure out the minimum turning radius. In a large open space try driving forward in as tight a circle that you can. Look in the rearview mirrors and note what it looks like. Do this for both directions. When backing up if the angle between the towing vehicle and the trailer is sharper than what you saw when running in a circle then you can't right it up again, it will only get worse so you will have to drive forward to straighten things up and try again.
One thing you should try to do is use some one to direct you. Make sure you have signs for left, right, go and stop. That is the least you need to direct this. Then *follow the signals, do not try to second guess anything* . Whoever is directing you will see a lot more than you do and doesn't have the added stress of actually handling the car or truck. And finally, go slow! the moment you think you've got this and accelerate it's very likely that things will go wrong, and the faster you go the worse things will get.

Pro tip to backing up with a trailer.
First, put your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel.
Second, watching in your mirror exclusively, discern which way you want your trailer to go and move your hand in that direction. DO NOT LET GO OF THE WHEEL.
Third, do not over correct, use slight turns to initiate your turn, then turn in the opposite direction equally to follow the trailers intended direction. Again, using your mirror as a visual aid do not turn around.
This is intended for all ages and capabilities.

    Looks great. Two thoughts.
    1) Most solar race cars built their the own solar panels. They bought loose individual cells like the higher efficiency flat panels used and mounted them on the car. This allowed them to mount them on a curved car. They coated them with something like a clear resin.
    2) Everybody uses outboards. Salt water kills everything. To extend the life of the motors, they use outboards and tilt them out of the water when not boating. When driving to Key West, the size of outboard motor boats I saw surprised me. I saw 4 even 5 motor boats. I have since learned you can get outboard motorboats up to 65 feet.

This inspired me to make my tandem kayak solar powered. I have an A/B switch to select either battery power (48 volt eBike battery with DC to DC converter) or solar power power alone. I use a standard Minn Kota 12 volt 300 watt trolling motor with a custom stern motor mount. The single ETFE solar panel fits neatly over the front seat, rated at 400w 18v- actually produces 125 watts at 10 am in Southern California. Moves 2.5 mph on solar, 3.8 mph on battery at 300 watts. Nice to not have to worry about running out of battery power.

You can make a port in which you plug a charger or withdraw power from the boat. 4. Maybe add a more batteries or atleast spare ones? 5.(this is going to be very hard) Add diagnostic monitors. This may include at the very least power consumption/generation

There are generally two kinds of boats, displacement boats, and planing boats. Displacement boats are usually pointy at both ends and are built to efficiently travel through the water. The water coming back in behind the boat squeezing that rear wedge shape, actually causes added thrust to counteract some of the drag pushing the water out from in front of the boat creates. What you have is a planing boat. It is very inefficient in the water and becomes efficient only after it has got up to enough speed to plane up on top of the water. So you need to either step your power way up to get the boat up on plane, or switch to a displacement hull built for travel in the water. My opinion anyway.

I know that they may not look quite as good as the flexible panels, but I’m using 375w Canadian solar house panels and I think you may fit two of them on the roof, use an mppt Charge controller to step the 33v maximum power point down to suit your 24v system, I’m using Esmart3 controllers myself, and you would run those panels in series for a higher voltage and better cloudy day performance. You can get them in black frame, so they still look sleek 👌 you’ll have more than enough power to run at full speed and still charge the batteries to full capacity at the same time.

Minn Kota, as do other manufactures match the prop to the motor for maximum efficiency. I had a Minn Kota 12 volt 40# thrust on an old 14 foot Arkansas Traveler fiberglass boat. It would go along at about 5 miles an hour on speed 6 pulling 40 amps. I knew it was about 5 mile/hour cause the pond was 5 miles long and took about an hour to cover the distance.

In water, surface condition and roughness is in essence for efficiency. More than 50% of your ennergy is spent to counteract friction at slow speeds. I'm doing sailboat regata in interior lakes (light wind and speeds like yours) Here is the best for friction : Mirror surfaces then unpolished with 1000 grit. (pure polished is a bit slower). Any roughness under 1000 grit is A LOT worse. I'm sure you can improve your prop A LOT with the correct surface roughness. Not sure how to do it on 3D prints.

You could add a fold out "wings" on each side of the roof to act as further solar panel supports, but it would change the classic boat curved aesthetics. If you curve that portion to exactly match the roof, then you would have kind of a moustache curl up on the ends of each panel.

  • @jasonheinrichs8200

I would try this myself but I don't have the boat or the electrical knowledge to pull it off, you already have the setup, you should extend the roof so it's the same length as the hull, and have panels that fold out when your on the water so you have more panels getting power and then add another motor or 2 below the boat, having a total of possibly 6 rigid panels, I'm sure with all the excess amps you could get that boat a lot faster on the water

Two propellers and only one rudder gives you less drag and the rudders you have are a real drag. Airflow, waterflow same really. You wouldn't make a plane rudder like that. I strongly suggest that you just take them off and use a basic sailing dinghy one screwed to the transom then use your existing steering gear and a Quadrant.
You could even try a bow rudder for less turbulence and with two motors that can be running in opposite directions it would manoeuvre really well specially when docking on camera.

Great build Peter! Maybe you should mount some fins in front of the motors so they don't rip off in case you strike the bottom? When I'm in shallow water I usually pull out the pivot locking pin on my outboard motor so it'll just twist up if I hit, but obviously you don't have that option here. :)
