    Bulletstorm is a 2011 first-person shooter video game made by Polish developer People Can Fly and the American company Epic Games, and is published by Electronic Arts for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows. The game was released on February 22, 2011 in North America and on February 25, 2011 in Europe.
    The game is distinguished by its sense of style and crass humor, rewarding players with points for performing increasingly ludicrous and creative kills. Bulletstorm does not have any competitive multiplayer modes, preferring instead to include cooperative online play as well as score attack modes.
    As a first-person shooter, Bulletstorm focuses on combat, both with firearms and melee attacks. There are a variety of fictional firearms available, although the game also places heavy emphasis on kicking enemies and using the energy leash.
    The weapons range from a pistol to a cannon that shoots a bolas weighted by grenades. The player can aim down the weapon's iron sights or optical sights for increased accuracy. Each weapon has an "alternate fire" mode which uses charges; for example, the assault rifle's alternate fire is a single blast of bullets that destroy almost everything in its path. Much of the story and gameplay revolves around the "energy leash", a rope of energy projected from a device on Grayson's left hand. The leash allows him to pull enemies towards him, activate certain devices and traps, and slam down a ball of energy that launches all nearby enemies into the air. The player can also kick enemies and run and slide into them. If an enemy is launched into the air from the whip or by being kicked, the enemy goes into slow motion to allow the player more opportunity to perform skillshots.
    One of the game's unique features is the "skillshot" gameplay system, which rewards the player for killing opponents in the most creative and destructive ways possible, from killing an enemy in midair to pushing an enemy into a carnivorous plant to executing an enemy after shooting him in the testicles. The more complicated or unusual the skillshot, the more points players acquire. The points are used to purchase weapons and upgrades. The weapons are unlocked at set points throughout the game, and after a weapon has been "re-armed" by purchasing it, a "charge shot" for the gun is unlocked at another set point.
    Points are used as currency at "dropkits" scattered across the planet, which the player can use to replenish munitions. The dropkits include a gun shop, a skillshot checklist, and gameplay statistics. The player cannot upgrade their weapons, but can equip different guns, purchase ammunition, upgrade the amount of ammunition they can carry, and even purchase special-ammunition "charges". The player can equip up to three weapons, the assault rifle being the default weapon; it is always equipped, and is considered the main prop weapon in cutscenes.
    Bulletstorm uses a recharging health system, in which damage to the player is reflected by the screen turning red, and the player quickly returns to full health when not taking damage.

      The first bunch of levels are great fun. This game really does have a lot going for it, and when it's fun it's super fun. It's just the later half that sucks most of the fun out of it, and like GGGMan said, it's pretty much impossible to perform all the trick-moves on higher difficulty and it feels rather unfair. I also thought that the trick-moves got very repetitive as the game went on. Definitely not the worst game ever, but also not great either.

    A really fun game and there are alot of moments that sort of breaking the "traditional" story build up. One memorable part was that you think you going to have a boss fight with a giant mutant, but he just tripped and fell to the vat of Lava and ended up quickly.
    The story is a bit mixed though, sometimes it take itself too serious and sometimes they know they are poking fun of the storyline.
    All in all a really good experience to play this game back when it was released there was alot of "Military sims", in which also I think this game is most remembered for it's interactive trailer "Duty Calls".

    I've seen so many reviewers do this, I know it's 6 years old now and Gman has long since evolved with his format and dropped this part of his review structure. This video made me realize something about a huge chunk of even the best reviewers.
    So Gman starts talking about the plot, almost immediately first thing in the video right after a brief intro.
    You figure this might last eh, 5-10 seconds, maybe 15 tops?
    Then he just keeps going and going and going, and you're sitting there like... 'Uhhh dude? wtf? so... how many hours into the game will I be before I don't know what happens next now?'
    So you keep watching, figuring this is going to be required information for the following review he's going to give.
    Then when he finally finishes, there's no actual reason, other than padding the video length, for any of that being told to you.
    I think it's widely assumed that 'spoiler' just means 'the biggest twists or reveals in the plot climax'.
    Honestly, spoiler is a nuanced concept that different people have different tastes for, but IMO we should add an unwritten standard for a game reviewer where you give as little as possible in terms of plot or storyline aspects, opting for a 'Back of the Game Box' game overview. The setting, worldbuilding aspects, time period, aesthetic, and a movie-poster-length synopsis of the game's story.
    It'd be nice to have a 'gold standard' definition of 'spoiler' that only reviewers use, where it includes any/all significant events that happen from the first cutscene to the credit roll. All other background world/gameplay aspects are fair play. Unless a specific part of the review requires revealing certain events to critique/give thoughts about the way they were done, there is literally no actual reason that review videos should be padded with plot dumps that essentially ruin all suspense and surprise for the first few hours of any given game.
    Gman you already consistently hold this type of standard in 2021 it seems, sorry that this review got me thinking, it's not meant to be directed at you, this is such a common thing in reviews.

    I didn't enjoy Bulletstorm as much as I thought I would, especially after seeing their parody Duty Calls, so I thought they'd deliver something that avoids the modern FPS tropes.
    But then you have limited carrying weapons, some QTEs, regen health and especially too much linearity, and invisible walls and of course no jump but QTE for the jump over ledges. This creates such a feeling of no control, even if this is just an FPS and has the good gimmicks of attraction beam and special kills and some interesting weapons (even if sometimes the enemies felt bullet spongy to me), there were a lot of other bad elements that made me not want to play the game after a while.

    Bulletstorm feels like somebody was making an old-school fast paced shooter, and then some executive came in and said: "The fuck? Is that big, red, rectangle supposed to be health? And why are the bullets so slow? Nonono, this'll never do. Change all of it, can't stray from the formula, or else we'll lose our investor money!" And then we wound up with something that feels like it's supposed to be old school, but is still caught up in the modern trends.

      100%, and honestly the notion that this is a REAL FPS for REAL gamers is completely absurd. It's basically the worst of both worlds, with slow movement, reloading, first person cover system, it's a mess.
      Seeing how much people love this game online makes me a little sad. It's ok for people to like things, but there's so many legitimately old school FPS games that go ignored while EPIC gets to sell copies of this completely generic crap. I'm positive no one would consider this game to be very special if there was a greater general appreciation for older FPS games.

    Thinking about if DE added this type of combat philosophy would it be better or worst?🤔

    In the current-gen version of the game, there’s a special mode you unlock after completing the campaign for the first time called overkill mode where in that mode, it’s the same campaign but with one major difference: ALL WEAPONS AVAILABLE!! That’s right, no three weapon restriction bullshit whatsoever

      They were banking on the 360/PS3 versions of this game selling well. It didn't, and that's not due to piracy in the least. The game was marketed to be much more generic than it actually was, and it being a new IP didn't help at all.

    This was a free download on PSN last year, and I enjoyed it immensely... I realize the FPS market was really overcrowded with so-called "serious/gritty" titles back then, but this little over-the-top jewel deserved a lot more love than it actually got...
    Far as I'm concerned, it's the spiritual heir to Duke Nukem/Shadow Warrior. There's always room for a game that isn't afraid to make fun of the genre and doesn't take itself too seriously by trying to be something it isn't.

  • @aedanclarke
    @aedanclarke 9 лет назад

    I actually went and got the game because of this review and while I'm really enjoying it, there's one point in particular that I have to agree on, since it makes itself noticeable very early on. That is the weird hit detection problem that causes certain skillshots to simply not work when they should. The number of times I've emptied a dozen rounds into a man's crotch in hopes that I can stun him, then kill him for the 'Mercy' skillshot, or perfectly pulled off an intentional 'Gag Reflex', (at long-range, mind you) only for it not to register when I attempt it the next few times is a real bother. I promise, I'm actually pretty good at shooters, these shots aren't difficult for me to line up... they just don't register. And it's a real pisser, because for those two specific shots, I'd say they work only half the time, maybe less. There's a few other skillshots with dodgy registration, but they don't have it as a problem nearly as much. And that's a real damned shame, because if they'd fixed that, the game's combat would've been, flat-out, one of the best in FPS history. Instead, it's relegated to 'really good', which is enough to be memorable and usually enjoyable, but not, "Holy fuck, you need to play Bulletstorm. It's combat is second-to-none," like it really, really could've been... Damn, I just realized how sad it makes me when games come so close to living up to their potential, but a small problem gets in their way... And, of course, the game was never patched (at least not to resolve this), which, well, I can't imagine it's a problem that EA didn't know about via QA. It's really damned noticeable... But, alas, a great game this is, and I shouldn't complain too much that it wasn't INCREDIBLE, since I'm still having a lot of fun and it's polished in most every other aspect.

    Just the best Old-school FPS of the 360/PS3 era. As far as i love Singularity, prey or Quake 4 that game won all. Fast paced Action , Beutiful graphics , fun weapons and skillshot, with only this game People can fly have made the major hit they never have made of the Painkiller Series.

    Bulletstorm could have been amazing, but it was held back by a lot of the same issues that plage the Gears of War games. Especially the way it trivializes its scripted setpieces and makes them little more than dull background animations.

    Thanks for the review GGG because I picked a copy up after seeeing this review and I could'nt put it down until I'd finished. If Call of Duty and Gears of War had a baby, this what it would look like. It's shame it never had a sequel because there's not enough titles out there that manage to have a decent SciFi story and manage to cram some funny scripting in on purpose when some AAA studios can't manage to pull that off.

  • @Lunchbox224
    @Lunchbox224 8 лет назад

    Interesting related fact: Though the game was written by an American most known for writing comic books, many of the Polish developers weren't really aware of what was going on with the writing until they read a Polish translation. One of them likened it to learning a curse word in another language. When you learn it, you kind of just say it because your own culture doesn't really have much context to it, so it's fun for the most part. When you hear it from a language you're more familiar with, then it starts to hit home.
    In the same breath, they had praise for Epic, as they were never put under any pressure to clean it up.

    Definitely my favorite fps of this decade (even with so many awesome other shooters like Wolfenstein, Doom, Shadow Warrior,...) and I think the linear level design was fitting for a game like this. But what you said is true, died so many times tryin to pull off certain skillshots.

      +DUSKIE STUDIOS Your the only kid here. Shooters are more fun to play with more weapons and having a weapon limit in a game that encourages total mayhem was just pointless. And I would of rather had health packs instead of being forced to take cover every 5-10 seconds. I don't care about realism, bulletstorm didn't need it.

    • @JmanRising
      @JmanRising 8 лет назад +1

      +DUSKIE STUDIOS 4 sentences with some double spaces is a essay? Okay then. Better than spamming somone with multiple messages in a row and telling someone to shoot themselves over a preference of game mechanics. At least you agreed with some of my points though.

    • @JmanRising
      @JmanRising 8 лет назад

      +DUSKIE STUDIOS Nope but nice try though. Even 9/11 jokes are fair game. Even though I saw 9/11 happen on TV by accident when I used to watch the weather(we didn't have internet back then) before going to kindergarden and actually had nightmares for a week because of it.

    • @Psychoangel-d23
      @Psychoangel-d23 8 лет назад

      +DUSKIE STUDIOS Health regen usually makes things pretty easy since you can recover pretty fast. The fights are usually more dynamic but not to big of a challenge.
      Meanwhile without it the fights feel way more intense. you always have to keep and eye out for supplies and some cheeky ass sniper that cuts off a great chunk of your health with one bullet. For me it´s a pure preferance and games should´ve have this as a feature you can turn on and off....

    While on subject of over the top action, do you have any plans for a mod corner video? There was a Doom mod called Trailblazer released just at the start of this year that would fit right in, the same person who made it also worked on Russian Overkill, probably one of the most if not the most ridiculous mods one could imagine.
