Thanks for watching!
this era of BMW you never get tired of. This is probably the best sedan ever made
Very true. I love my 95 740i so much. It amazes me everytime I drive it. The suspension, the awesome steering, the butter smooth acceleration from the german v8, and the precision of the magnificently crafted high end beamer interior. Bought it before covid for $2500, put about 90 hours labor into it, and it was worth every second. The best there ever was, and the best there ever will be!!
It spent most it's time at the mechanics though
@@mharro88 for the way it drives, I would have it in the shop 28 days a month to drive it 2, never regret any penny spent on 90s era BMW
@@gunsandcars3648 fair enough
@@gunsandcars3648 Low standards.
This generation of the 7 series and the E39 5 series are in my opinion the most perfect cars ever made. Maybe not the best in every way, but find me a single fault on them when you put them within the context of what they are and when they were made. They're just perfect inside and out down to the smallest detail. If BMW were to make this car brand new now, exactly as it was in the 90's, I'd buy one immediately rather than anything else on the market.
Also makes me cry to see what BMW is spewing out nowadays. Their whole design team should be locked inside a dark room for a day with a projector only showing images of BMW's from the 90's. And then fired, because they're hopeless and won't learn anyway. I just want them to realize they suck at their job.
You mean the xm isn’t peak bmw design?
What BMW is coming out with nowadays is Not as bad as what Mercedes is coming out with nowadays. And this is coming from a Benz fanboy
Chris Bangle as head designer put the end of this great era of BMW. I'm afraid masterpieces like E39, E38, E46 would remain as a nice memory.
@@bumpyroad3251Nah, Bangles BMWs are overhated. The new BMWs are horribly fugly…
Bruh, you're way too dramatic. Automakers need to keep up with times if they wanna sell, simple. Just like any other company. Yes, it's a shame BMW is no longer what it used to be, but you can't be stuck in time. Also the financial situation of today's world is such that you can't build cars like back then any longer. Just like the jump from Nokias to iPhones... now everybody wants a big screen and that's it.
1995 - 2011 was when BMW shined, atleast styling wise in my opinion. All of those cars, especially the E90, E39, and E38 look SO timeless, and so much better than todays models.
Ugh the best looking 7 Series ever built. The elegance, presence, design, and timeless feel is what this era of BMW brought to us ~
These were such great cars.
They still are!
@@musguelha14facts
not many know this is the holy grail of BMW driving experiences, i had a 535i and 740i, pure poetry on the road.
NotTopher bringing the heat again
See that nicely thick tyres and not overly big rims. Why the trend today has changed so much that even the crappy econoboxes come with massive rims and thin tyres?
E39 is the most beautiful BMW in my opinion, this one is a close second! Beautiful car.
I 100% agree 👍
Why do u find the e39 better?
@@vincentsebina7182 Proportions.
Jiggle the shifter one more time for us!
Agreed best 7 ever - so clean, chiseled, and handsome. James Bond was a back seat driver in one in Tomorrow Never Dies. A friend of mine had a 740iL in Ascot Green over tan interior. Tons of road presence. Thanks for bringing back great memories!
The proportions of this car are simply godly. One of the best looking cars ever made.
manuals on fullsize luxury cars are a critically endangered breed so this is very interesting to see
She’s a beauty!! Manual perfection..Def on my car bucket list 👍🏼
I must say I’ve got to agree!
Say what you want about it being non-sunroof, but here in the UK, a slick-top is far more desirable than any sunroof model as they are just so much better to own, less sound, weight, hassle and no leaks and they look better, this e38 in particular looks to be in such a rare spec, especially being a manul
The Transporter approves
The only generation of BMW that ever made me do a double take; I loved those. Best era ever for the brand. I’d never consider a modern BMW now.
This is near the top of my list. I'm delighted in the idea of a manual 7 series. The best looking 7 series, in fact.
Watching you drive on these beautiful roads is truly amazing
The E38 is by far one of my favorite BMWs. They look amazing, ride/handle well and have just the right amount of power, that being enough to get you in trouble but not a crazy amount of power that just spins the wheels all the time. If I can find me a reasonable LCI 740i M Sport package I'd love to own one.
Hey ST! I agree--that generation five series was, for me, the most beautiful BMW ever. I dreamed of having one. I love the upright greenhouse, proportions, clean design, and driver focus. It's good to see you, I always enjoy your reviews.
Oh my gosh, what a special car. It took me about 5 seconds to believe my eyes when I saw the title😂
"Speaking of Tupac, he was in an E38 when his whole situation happened"
"Whole situation" is an interesting way of saying "murder"
Thanks for this one man, seeing one of my fav vehicle channels cover a car very similar to mine, 5 speed and all, is a great way to end my work week; on a good note.
This is one of my most favorite cars of all times. Aside from the csi series in the 70s. . . Absolutely gorgeous. . .I am drooling
You could actually get a 6 speed manual in a bmw even before the e38, it was actually an option in the e31 8 series. Really strange it wasnt in the 7
You could get the E38 740i in Europe with the 6 speed. Even the E34 540i was available with a 6 speed as well as the E34 M5. Euro-Spec 3.2 Liter E36 M3 got the 6 speed as well.
Well, having a manual transmission is a luxury for car enthusiasts
Agreed - and extremely rare on a 7 series
Congrets to the owner for taking care of the car this way, they are a real piece of history
I had a 98 740iL with M P wheels. Looked the business! Drove amazing!
Can you imagine that at one point in time if you were to roll up in this car, you'd be considered a baller.
you'd still be ballin in a clean one today, this is what makes these cars epic
@@Ventuura Nope. I used to drive an E46, I loved that car despite all the DYI's. These cars look fantastic which is just a testament of how good the design has held up. I don't think I would be able to say the same for some of the new ones. -Cough- G80...
You're still a baller if you pull up in one today. Actually a bigger baller than back then, back then you didn't have a choice. Today you have a choice, and if you pick this, it means you have style. If you pull up in a new 7 series, it just means you have more money than taste.
@@derbigpr500 Have you seen the new 7 series? I wouldn’t be driving that thing anywhere. I really would be too embarrassed to have such an ugly design car. The rear isn’t actually that bad but that front end…
Yes, I can believe that.
Love the updated infotainment screen. Looks very E39/E46. Very classy, like how Porsche is doing their retrofit kits.
E38 remains my all-time favorite 7-Series. It was peak 7-Series for me.
I have a manual swapped 740i (‘00 Sport) that’s currently getting a 4.6is engine swapped in.
She’s spicy. The 6 speed just feels so natural in the chassis.
Had a e39 535i manual. Nice in theory but its a lazy car and hard to drive in city because its tiring, long gears...
that sound is amazing
Engine sound is not bad too
Back when BMW made durable car that were meant to last forever.
manual transmission makes such cars timeless~
This car doesn't need a manual. It's timeless without one. I like manuals, but they are overrated and create his superiority complex in the car enthusiast world. You don't need a manual. An E38 is mostly a car for cruising, so a manual doesn't transform the car into a race car... it's not a car you want to drive on a track. It's a car you want to drive daily and to drive cross country in. Most of these cars had automatics. The 750iL... aka the flagship was only in automatic. If you have one of these when new, you were either in the back seat while your chauffer was driving the car... or you were a rich, German CEO flying down the autobahn at 155mph yelling at your employees before your meeting with the BMW car phone that all of the 750iLs had in them from the factory... and a few 740iLs had them too... as an option. I think any E38 could get them as an option/upgrade if you wanted to pay extra, but 750iL aka the flagship had the car phones as standard from the factory. You kind of expected to have it since you were getting the flagship, and I couldn't imagine anyone telling the dealer that they didn't want the car phone in their flagship BMW... they were like the latest iPhone or Android phone at the time... you were the coolest person in town if you had a factory car phone. Heck, I wish cars still had them on their analog network, or I wish I could retrofit mine on my cellular network... that would be awesome.
@@arorakevin While I agree that automatic matched the high class and smoothness of the flagship, my simple point is that automatic gets way faster each year and driving such an slow shifting automatic in today's world certainly makes it stale. However, the manual lets us use the power of the car to its full potential, thereby making it timeless. Also, it's way more satisfying to cruise in a manual unless in heavy traffic. The chauffeur would be good for that regard too and would enjoy the manual more, even more in the Autobahn with the V12s. There are a variety of vintage cars which still are in manual and people love them. In my opinion, automatic was a game changer only when BMW introduced its ZF-8... all automatics before it were just too slow. No doubt on the interior specs and class they had, car phones were peak mafia. Sadly, Mercedes and BMW have lost all its elegance today and there's only one brand which has remained truly classy which is Rolls Royce.
@@sidz0001 . the five speed auto isn't
slow shifting, even by today's standards. It shifted better than a lot of 6 speed automatics. Of course the new 8 speeds are much better, but the M62tub44 and M73 wouldn't have benefitted from the 8 speed or a manual unless doing spirited driving on windy roads or a track. The 5 speed automatic they have is very capable and it is geared nicely for the long legged 750iL and 740iL... the 5 speed automatic is even good enough in the 740i M sport which has more aggressive gear ratios. There is no advantage to having a manual when cruising, unless you want to downshift down hills. Anyway, if you want slow, clunky gearbox... you should drive an older BMW with the four speed automatic... the change from the 4 speed automatic to the 5 speed automatic is night and day.
I have both E38 and F01 (F02 long wheel base) and I absolutely love driving and working on E38. I learn to appreciate the simplicity yet elegant design they've put into these E38's. If you have the patience, skills and the will to work on these legends, absolutely get one. If you are relying on your euro Indy mechanic to work on everything on your E38 I wouldn't recommend it.
This era was peak BMW the e46 m3 even the ci was a work of art that never gets old
06:55 "Only thing we're really missing is the sunroof", yes and rear shades, heated/ventilated seats, rear armrest with cup holders and electrical controls, massages, etc. etc. :D
Love My E38. Tranny redone, front end and rear end done! Drives like it just came out the showroom.
The best interior of the 90s, and the navscreen actually looks much better than the OEM one!
The classiest big luxury sedan
I remember Topher's review of your E32. I am so torn. Have some great memories in an E32, so a big soft spot for them. I still think a 2001 E38 740i with sport package is my favorite of all time.
It has a screen at that time, damn so advanced until they started ruining the design now
So classy and beautiful, it's so sad where BMW design is today.
In 2002 when I was 16 I was driven around in a E38 740i. Now, 2023 I am the proud owner for one a a half years of a ‘99 728i E38. Dreams for over 20 years do come true! 🥹
In Europe the sunroof was optional, just like the leather upholstery. 5 speed manual was standard as well 😊
What a beauty
French here : your accent reading the oil temperature was actually okay haha
This is such a great balance of a car, so smooth and plush yet engaging with it’s 5 speed & relatively compact chassis
I love that it has a manual gearbox
I own an E23 745i turbo and an E32 735i 5-speed. The E23 is a disassembled project, but the E32 drives and is really fun with the M30 inline 6. I'm partial to the way those cars look, but I appreciate a good E38, especially one with a manual since we didn't get them here.
The euro-model E36 M3 had a six speed manual after the 3.2L facelift. I had one, it was awesome.
After seeing this video, now I want one...great era when BMW was BMW
This is so BMW! I miss this era more and more, especially looking at contemporary design monsters they give birth nowadays
Shout out to Tupac! These E38s are iconic. My father in law recently gave his away. I never knew these had a manual. Awesomeness
Love old slicktop BMWs, I had a E53 X5 3.0i with style 56 wheels and a slicktop.
У нас в России их тоже очень любят.
Я до сих пор хочу такую.
Жаль сложно найти в достойном состоянии.
Если бы было возможным купить такую новую сейчас, я бы взял ее и не один из современных авто
The E38 did get a 6 speed, I know as my grandpa had one (740i)!
Great review! Beautiful car and beautiful scenery. 😊 I'm a proud owner of a 135000km 1998 E38 728i. Yeah, these cars are special. Perfection, really. ❤
My dad had a 1996 320i Coupé back in the days and it was reving into the limiter in 5th gear riding top speed on the Autobahn.
Back in early 2000s I was young I remember my dad has a 1997 735il that's when I became a bmw fanboy and my dream car now is the m5 f90 series😍
Had** i can't edit the comment idk why
I bought a automatic 728i 4 months ago and i've fallen in love with this car.
True most beautiful car bmw ever made
Hmm noticed you used the indicators. You might not want to do that, I find that BMW indicators seem susceptible to indicator wear. At least all the ones I seem to see on the road
If it’s European why is the speedometer in mph? Did he switch it out?
Seems like he brought it from France to the US and switched the dash to make it more easily drivable in the states. Thats what I think happened.
There was also a 740i with 6spd manual and only as prefacelift.
not here to nitpick or talk down, just some food for thought: you could get a e38 740i with a 6speed in European markets, additionally the 850i was available in ever market with a 6speed starting in 1991.
All the noises and sights are very familiar to me as a pre-facelift E39 owner :D
Yep , im big fan of e38 and e39. I wish i had e38 manual
Beautiful car. I prefer the old bmws and mercedes from the 90s.
Gorgeous, I miss my 07 535 xi auto matic online 6 but she was a blessing and I'm going to enjoy this 02 328 xi
I must be getting old, because the idea of the M62B35 in a heavier car sounds good - you can wring it out a bit and hear the wonderful noises without going to jail.
Got a M62B44 in an E39, and you're in 'go-to-jail'/'life altering ticket' territory pretty dang quick... that or stuck in traffic. I don't know how guys drive around in this 5-6-7 hundred HP stuff on the street...
Bmw 7 series and manual gear omg thats my dream car
In Europe you can get an E38 with the 2.8l i6 and manual, which I think is the cooler combination.
Underpowered
best car ever.
Change the flex disc shaft hub It will fix that feeling
Awesome find!! Kauth and Mayeur is legit too, I’ve been there a couple times. Do you live in the Peoria area, or just passing through?
The white / clear turn signals and tail lights are not exclusive to the facelift actually. You could get those for the pre-facelift too.
has this car had trunk lid replaced? I see that rear licence plate fits exactly into its place. European licence plates are more rectagular.
Please do a review of the legendary e39 540i!
Thanks
The ultimate driving machine. I'm always going to love my iroc-z Camaros over any car especially the 350 tpi they were reliable and got on it but beautiful 735
It speaks/wisper with you
Fantastic 😌
Interesting how it has US spec boot lid. Definitely didn’t have it from the factory. Speedometer was also changed.
The best 7 Series ever.
I said "I'm 5'10" when you were saying your height and was surprised when u said 5'11
He woke up feeling taller this morning 😂😂😂😂
I would buy that!!
What? They never made a 7 series with a manual in the ISA did they??
Beast ❄️🥶
Can you imagine that european e39/e38 guys freak out when they get their hands on a US spec version?😅
I have a UK spec e39 so its a rhd (i'm a right hand traffic state). Most people love it or admire me for driving that thing because its special, but only a few guys would own and use it daily.
great car
its interesting this is a French import BMW, the car has a U.S. trunk hatch (fits U.S or JDM License plate) and the speedometer is also in MPH so I guess the owner went the extra mile swapping those out for the U.S. equivalent.
Every time I drive my black 7 series I always have “All eyes on me”
In Europe sunroofs are pretty rare, I'm always surprised when I see someone buying an entry spec e34 or the like and it has a sunroof, here in my country there's literally one e34 with (out of 40) that has a sunroof that's currently for sale.
The reason for this is just that since we have much poorer weather than in the US (older) sunroofs are a liability as they are prone to rust and leak a lot.
I had a sunroof in my previous E36 compact, man I loved the roof. My current E90 doesn't have one, but I will try my best to get the next BMW with a glass sunroof (also known as "moonroof"). All US spec BMWs have sunroofs, apparently that's how they have been certified.
Sunroof also robs a lot of headroom. I’m average height 180cm by my country standards and my hair slightly hits the sealing with sunroof.
@@mikojarvinen6273 Come on man. I am 190 cm and it wasn't an issue for me. Just make sure your seat is brought down to the floor. BMWs are fantastic for tall people.
@@MatiKosa I feel like the headroom in E38 wasn’t so great with sunroof. I didn’t move the seat bc it was my brother’s but he usually sits pretty low compared to me.
I learned to drive manual on a 4-speed 1979 733i. I'm pretty sure the US never got anything below a 740i for the E38.
French and EU license plates are long and rectanglar (even in the 90s, I am French), the read license plate mount coun't fit a French license plate, is it modified?
Did the owner have to change the instrument cluster together and the trunk (short registration plate) to match the US spec? Else the cluster would have been in km/h and the trunk would have been adjusted for wider plates. 740i/540i had the 6-speed manuals if I remember correctly.
All the bmw E chassis are the best 😏
i was laughing with you along this video..ahhhh…i really love e38’s..NEVER been in one…this video just transitioned me into being in one..😪…
