  • Based on recent developments in the industry, we’re excited to introduce our new 4K - Fast finish.
    Innovation and technology are at the heart of our core values. Recently our R&D Team was offered the opportunity to dig deep into our process and develop technology that makes the finishing of our coverstocks more manipulatable which allows for enhanced customization for every bowler.
    The 4K - Fast finish is the purest finish we’ve ever created. No foreign materials are added to the process resulting in the true coverstock making contact with the lane.
    We’re excited to rollout this finishing process immediately. You’ll see it in new products as well as some historic, existing products. In the next few weeks, we will be sharing more tests and tips from our team about the best ways to care for the products that you choose to bowl your best on the lanes.

      @@LuisNapoles It's not the first time we get a factory 4000 bowling ball in the history of bowling. And besides, even IF there is a difference, it's going to be minimal exactly because they are going away from 1500-polish (which was not easy to replicate), to a regular all steps 4000, which is kind of the point they made. To be easily repeatable from bowlers. All they need os to mention the duration for the spinner or by hand, and voila.

    Guys, this surface change is what has been needed for a while, so I'm glad you decided to do it. Too often box finish of "1500 polished" has led to a skid/flip ball reaction. The Code X comes to mind (but there are other balls that offer the same type of ball reaction). I don't know if material cost and/or availability has something to do with the decision to change surface prep, but I believe league bowlers will welcome it. Thanks!

    Marketing spin on "we're manipulating the hardness tests to avoid changing our base coverstock formula." I support Storm 100%, but just give it to us straight. 'The USBC testing is flawed, so to prevent them from screwing us again in the future, we're altering our box finishes, to remove the variance that factory compound created.'

      @roymunson38 2 года назад

      The factory compound didn't create a variance in hardness. It contaminated the needle. And since the USBC is ruled by a dictator who holds those on the board "hostage" they don't want to listen to that. Now polish can contaminate the needle and USBC can't bed over storm again.

      Good day, It took me a moment to understand the process. It's a little confusing right? The steps explained from minute 7:00-7:18 call for 15-second sanding of each grit mentioned in the video. There's no 3000-grit pad used as it is not used in their finishing process (according to their resurfacing guide from 2012 and before: www.stormbowling.com/downloads) except to finish the ball at 3000-grit.
      When Alex says: "We're not skipping any grits in between... We're literally not going to skip any steps..," it's to be understood "contextually" not "literally." I hope this helps.

But he never mentions 1500 or 3000 in his explanation of what 4k fast means. Are they used? I understand the time for each of the 4 sides is 15 seconds, but is that with a wet or dry pad?

    • @the_crusty_ledge
      @the_crusty_ledge 2 года назад

      honestly shouldn't matter what any chart says there is no single master correct answer to the surface question that can be charted out. Surface prep is based on performance of the ball and what you want or need it to do. You should be able to figure that out for yourself since you don't have a ball rep standing behind you. Surface should also be changed at events during warm-ups , also something you have to learn for yourself. A chart can't answer the question of what should a ball surface should be based on the reaction you see that day at said bowling alley with X oil pattern. It's just another part of bowling you have to learn , no different than your approach, follow-through , or release. Not everyone does that same thing, , not all sanding pad brands give the same results. It's personal consistency. pick a product and find a method you can reproduce ie. use a ball spinner or just by hand, medium pressure or soft or hard pressure , dry sand or sand with ball cleaner. all these variations give a different result.

    On 02:50 i heard this : The Ra of this ball (pointing to the left one without the polish) is under 5 Ra, and the polished one is around 3." This is so small that 99.9% of players will not even notice the tiny difference in reaction. So there must be another reason for this change, as in fact it even makes balls look less appealing on the shelf. Perhaps something to do with hardness tests? The timing of it seems to point to that, as Storm was always the company with the shiniest bowling balls.
    The gentleman on the right, is saying "hey what we do now, is what pros do, they remove the polish, so we're doing another good thing"....but this is also another way of saying "we were wrong to put all that polish on our bowling balls all these years because they don't have as a consistent reaction as without polish". (this is something Mo Pinel was suggesting many years ago so nothing new there).
    On 06:30 they mention how to go from the previous 1500/polish to the 4000, and they say you have to go to 360 to "remove all the polish". That sounds weird since even a 3000 or 2000 pad will remove the polish. Also, since the other ball had a 1500 grit beneath....why not start there and then go all the steps up ?

    • @rb8999
      @rb8999 2 года назад +1

      the polished ball did not have 1500 grit underneath. This is another reason why it's a good change because people didn't understand how 1500 grit polished was achieved.

      @notonyourlife7939 2 года назад

      The answer to this question is always the same, no matter what ball or box finish: You touch up the surface whenever you no longer see the desired ball reaction. That might happen after 3 games, or 7, or 10.... or any other number. It all depends on how you throw the ball, and under what conditions.
      If you bowl on the burn on old high friction wood lanes, tossing it 20 mph with a 500+ rev rate, then you'll need to touch up the surface a lot sooner than the guy who bowls on freshly oiled synthetic lanes with half the speed and half the revs. It's all relative...

      Since all their balls with shiny, visual shelf-appeal got them in trouble with the powers that be, now they have to resort to nifty marketing catch phrases instead. Anything that has he word "fast" attached to it is automatically awesome. 🤣👍

    hmmm... Can we see these two balls under a few durometers?! I'm not implying these are soft, but I AM implying you guys are going this route to correct the whole balls measuring too soft. What I'm hearing is the old process didn't go grit by grit but the new one does. Thus, there's less chance of peaks/valleys resulting in the measurements being better.

    So, how many balls in the Storm, Roto-Grip, and
    Global 900 catalog will be getting this new treatment..??
    And is this because of the inherent flaws in USBC's hardness checks.. I've been telling people for 2 yrs that there is a variety of factors that can determine the hardness or even softening of Reactive Resin balls..
    Thanks for the time to post question.. will be looking forward to a response..
    Thanks again also for making such great products, supporting American families and American Bowlers.
    You keep producing the greatest bowling balls around and I'll keep buying them.

    Surface changes gives variation into hardness, as you stated, when out of factory balls get tested. And now you’re changing it out of factory for other balls after further testing was stopped… 🤔

      They send the testing balls all sanded at the same grit. Usually 500 grit, look at the usbc ball approval list pictures and you'll see. All bowling balls from every company are the same grit prior to testing.

    So basically, you propose as a new idea, what Mo Pinel said years ago...
    Also you attempt to introduce another term , that is really superfluous. "4K fast". Till now everyone understood that to go to 4000, you pass through all the steps (360-500-1000-2000-3000-4000). The only exception was "skip-grit" methods. So there is no need for a new term here.... "4K fast", is just...4000. If someone ends with 4K but skipped a grit, we already have a name for it, we call that "skip-grit".

    • @KennyGrinols
      @KennyGrinols 2 года назад +1

      Mo has been saying it for years, yes....but Radical still sold shiny balls with factory gloss the entire time, so what's your point? Storm is just the first company to sacrifice shelf appeal, but we all know the real reason. Radical has been upfront about it for years, factory shine is 100% just to make balls look pretty because it helps them sell when sitting on a shelf next to competitors inside the pro shop.

      Ok, I understand your comment. What is the typical process (if there is one) to "knock the finish off" on a new 1500 polish ball? Seems ridiculous to start at 360 and go all the way step by step to 4000.
