I agree with both of you. Kanto has a lot of lame areas, but I also love that it becomes nonlinear-ish in the mid/late game.

As a programmer I'm baffled that these games could be patched. I'm not a hardware guy, though, it may be simpler than I think.
I think it's basically just patching the *save file* to correct the clock
