One of the best sermons for Christians to hear and obey for God's "eternal" purposes to be fulfilled. I have had to learn this very wisdom in most bitter ways but God's Spirit has prevailed. I thank God that He had inspired this type of preaching to reinforce the truth that if Christ is to become more, I must become less. Thank You Lord for Sinclair, RC and Ligonier.
NIV got it wrong. “Lest” is the key word, once after a negative statement and once not - an important distinction. A better modern take would be: Do not answer a fool according to his folly, otherwise you yourself will be just like him. Do answer a fool according to his folly, so that he will be wise in his own eyes. The interpretation of that is another story and separate point. I’ll take a stab at it though: When talking with a fool, if I am being argumentative and accepting his premises and debating the facts and details he brings up, you’ll lose a debate because he thinks he has a winner with his pet topic. However, if asking open-ended questions and supporting and listening respectfully to his replies, esp certain ones, one can make him feel wise and he will go away thinking 🤔 I wrote that because Im sure you are very interested in my opinion.
