Fantastic comparison, the Explorer edges into first place for me, simply for the practicality, wearability waterproof, and it’s more elegant in my view, it’s on my Wish List, but I have to sell a few old friends first. Really appreciate these videos, a fantastic channel for watch lovers… spread the word❤️
Have both exact same pieces and same wrist size as yours. Explorer is easy to wear and versatile But the speedy is so good looking! Wonder if our 3rd piece is the same again? Lol
Nice comparison video. These are 2 of my current 3 watch collection (the other is a 42mm PO). They’re both classic and amazing pieces. I think the increased water resistance and easy link is why I personally give the Explorer the edge.
Hey Calvin! I’m partial to the Explorer due to its versatility/practicality/build quality. That’s the one I would go with. I want a Batman btw! I’m jealous
The Speedy is a great watch, and if I was a collector then I'd have one, but as a OWG I'll keep to my Explorer every day. It's the perfect all rounder.
Excellent. I have a 6.5" wrist and I have been waiting on the Explorer since Sept 1st. I don't have the Speedmaster, but the 42mm PO and it should wear the same (case wise) and wears great on my wrist. I look forward to the Explorer...if it ever comes.
@@watchyourstyle Ah... so now I have the new 3861 Speedmaster (for about a month now), It's fantastic. Still waiting on the Explorer from The AD. Patiently. The new Speedmaster is making that wait easier.
Great video. I currently have the Explorer and an aqua terra in my collection and I’m trying to decide between a Speedmaster or a 5 digit sub... any thoughts?
Thank you! I personally would go with the sub since you’re short a diver right now. The water resistance, automatic movement, and chronometer accuracy are all a huge plus in my book too.
It’s odd. The Speedie is a bigger watch, but looks better on the wrist. The Explorer has to bigger crystal for such an empty dial, time only watch. Explorer bezel is also super thick. Proportions just seem a bit off.
In regards to AR coating what EVERYONE fails to point out. The reason Rolex does not AR coat sapphire crystals is due to visibility underwater. Dive watches do not need AR coating. A Rolex dial is most visible underwater. Since Oyster case watches are pretty much water resistant Rolex won't coat them. Also it takes away from the dial color. The AR coating distorts the dial at an angle. Rolex designs their watches for purpose of function. I personally find AR coating annoying. I don't find a blue/purple tint appealing on my watches. AR coating helps with light reflection at night more than it does in direct sunlight.
In advance I would like to apologize for me not being a native English speaker. But from what I heard and read about Rolex AR coating; is that AR coating does wear off after a long time. Rolex ideology is that your watch should outlast you. AR Coating would wear off before you do :D Rolex does use internal AR coating on the cyclops. But no external AR coating.
@@TheMadd_ Yes sir, another overlooked point. The AR coating on the cyclops many owners are not aware of that. Rolex designs their watches based on functionality and durability for the time a reference was produced. Many Rolex fans are so quick to criticize the design decisions Rolex has made in the past. Although some may just be real cost cutting mistakes, but they (Rolex) justify the design direction they present... then quietly correct the issue. Take the 39mm Explorer MkI. Short hands left over from the 36mm. Cost cutting, perhaps, but the hands are meant to blend into the hour markers. No lume on the numbers. Rolex stated they wanted to make the Explorer more dressy since it was overshadowed by steel sport professional models. The ceramic Super Oyster case? Many fan say "Oh they are 5 years late on the big watch trend". Maybe, but Rolex beefed up the lugs so that the watch will retain it's shape for a lifetime. The lugs have more steel and over polishing won't ruin the the case. No more spring bars poking out of over polished lugs. No more uneven lugs due to a life time of polishing. No more chamfered lugs because that's the first thing that gets ruined on the lugs. Rolex thinks and plans 5-10 years ahead at a time. Rolex knows they will never become a Patek, RM, VC, or even a JLC so they give themselves room to improve little by little. While holding back and artificially create a demand since Rolex is no longer the first choice of luxury wristwatches for the rich and famous.
The reason Rolex don’t use AR coating is because the dial comes across as more flashy and shinny when it reflects in the light. Has nothing to do with diving.
I'm sure this is not a popular opinion but I think they both look too big on a 6.5 inch. A 36mm vintage explorer or the fois would be better for 6.5 inch
@@watchyourstyle I totally get that lots of benefits, I also have a 6.5 inch wrist and and keep shrinking my watches for comfort benefits and not liking the dinner plate look
Totally agree... I recently got the previous gen omega SMP for these reasons! The older gen wore way too big, was too heavy, and the dial/case just looked massive on my poor, dainty wrist :(
I went for buying a speedmaster at my local AD last year and finally went for a used speedmaster reduced for exactly this reason. The professional didn’t look right on my 6.75 wrist ( to my great disappointment!) now, I want to complete my collection with an explorer and I can’t decide between a 36 or 39 mm
@@perudolux I have a fois but I think they are hard to come by now. It wears a bit smaller than the professional. My experience of wearing a 36mm smiths everest it would have to be a 36 explorer for my 6.5 inch I think, the 39 wears very big also
Explorer hands down. It's so much more versatile, clean, easy to read, not distracting. I never got the Speedmaster. I respect it's history but it always looks to busy and casual to wear with a suit, it isn't really waterproof and the hesalite crystal scratches easily. The Explorer you can wear with a suit or shorts and a t-shirt, it's a do anything go everywhere watch.
Price on New Speedy has just gone up...trying to catch-up to Rolex however both are still within range of one another. Both watches are classic depends on what functionality you want out of the watch. Rolex will definitely hold it's value and appreciate more over time imo
In the 60s, NASA selected its watch with tests and Rolex was eliminated and Omega passed all the tests. Rolex does not have a watch that compares to the SpeedMaster, please respect.
I am worried about the razor sharp edges of the less expensive Speedmaster. I fear those edges will slit my wrists, causing blood to spurt all over me and enveloping me in a blood-soaked maelstrom of misery and death. Just saying...
I disagree, explorer models can be dated back to the 50’s before even speedmaster existed so it’s definitely way more iconic and classic timepiece. Function wise, explorer has been known for being highly versatile watch that goes with any outfit in any occasion. With the automatic movement that refined over the years, it definitely is a more practical and functional piece that serve its true purpose.
en los 60 la nasa selecciono su reloj con pruebas y rolex quedo eliminado y omega aprobo todas las pruebas rolex no tiene un reloj que se compare al SpeedMaster, por favor respeto.
Cool comparison! Just subbed 👍🏻
Thank you so much! :)
I own both and they really compliment each other
Speedy looks much nicer... that's why I sold my Explorer (and I've bought the new Sub) and keep my Speedmaster.
Great comparison! Subscribed!
That new sub looks incredible. Enjoy and wear it in good health 😉 Thank you so much for your support!!
I'm about to do that. Do you still think the same? I'm about to buy a sub and sell the explorer for a speedmaster
@@savagepapi8071 yes! Sub+speedmaster = perfect combo

winding a watch every day must compromise the water tight seals on the crown ?

two very beautiful watches, I own the Rolex Explorer.

Awesome!! The PO is a solid watch as well. I recently picked up the 2254.50 seamaster as it’s thinner and has a similar fit to the speedy

Get rid of the aqua terra. It’s the weakest watch out of the four watches. Keep the explorer and get both speedmaster and sub.
