Terminator: Salvation - The UnPopular Opinion

  • Welcome back to The UnPopular Opinion! The UnPopular Opinion features different takes on films that either I hated, but that the majority of film fans loved or vice versa. We have always hoped this column will promote constructive and geek fueled discussion. Now, with us entering the visual world, you can get pissed off in a whole new medium!
    This time we look at the woefully controversial Terminator prequel, TERMINATOR: SALVATION (and not just for Christian Bale having a meltdown on set). Directed by McG and starring Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Bryce Dallas Howard, Moon Bloodgood, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Ironside and the late Anton Yelchin. This entry in the Terminator franchise took a lot of flak, some of it rightfully so. However, columnist Alex Maidy has another take that veers more in favor of the sci-fi sequel rather than against it. Take a look and see if you agree!

    Critics demonized Terminator: Salvation so severely that the producers had no choice but to reboot the franchise. In the end, what did we get by this "critics' response"? Terminator Geniysys and Terminator: Dark Fate!
    Sometimes we talk and criticise too much. And in the end, we are rewarded with much worse products.

    Terminator Salvation isn’t perfect but it was a step in the right direction. The last movie was just a gender swapped Terminator 2 and the movie before that one was a confusing mess. If they’re going to make more Terminator movies, they should be more like Salvation and take the franchise entirely into the future and see more of the war.

      The direction is right, but not the realization. This movie ignores the future view of James Cameron and start from a point that shits in all the Franchise. Skynet cannot know that Kyle Reese is the father of John Connor. Big Plot Hole. The world is dominated by Terminators but you can only see 6 and a half. The find Kyle Reese and machines dont kill him right in the moment but put him in a jail. To many bad points. The spent millions on dollars in not showing the war againts the machines.

    • @drongoryachiy
      @drongoryachiy 4 года назад +7

      @@clochunator Skynet can know that Reese is Connor's father from the ICTV recordings left from the police station of the first movie. But originally, the Kyle's arc hadn't been planned to appear at movie at all, it was added on the set, as far as I know
      Also... well, of course, McG and Cameron have different views on the franchise and the post-apocalyptic future scenes especially. But firstly, the year of Salvation is 2018, while in the first 3 movies there was 2029 that was shown to us, so these are various timelines and their atmosphere differs a lot. Also, what we saw in all prior 3 films were the NIGHT scenes, while most Salvation scenes can be found in DAY. Of course, all this thing is fan theory, still it explains it

    Kind of stupid how the next 2 movies after Salvation went back to the time travel loop. Salvation should've been used as the beginning next chapter of the Terminator saga... the great war between Man and Machine with John Connor leading the way. It would've also led to interesting side stories taking place during the great struggle. If they wanna salvage the Terminator franchise... consider T3 + Salvation as canon and completely disregard Genisys and Dark Fate. Stop with the time travel loop and just jump into the Man vs. Machine War already. The time travel aspect has grown tiresome.

    I don't mind the film, it has some problems here and there but they are so many positives. I just wish it had the same future look in Cameron's films. Anton Yelchin had more personality than Jai Courtney, some interesting terminator designs etc. This is the right direction if you want to make more of these films. Even add the horror elements from the first movie where even one terminator is a big risk and can cause so much damage. Remember Arnold destroying the entire police station? Well here he is in Sega Geneshit smiling with the song Bad Boys....And don't get me started with the last one where the first 5 minutes gave us an Alien 3 opening....

    The pros of Salvation for me were the grim and dark portrayal of the post-Judgement Day apocalyptic future. I also loved the different machine designs which had them in the water, the ground, and the skies which created a sense of dread that nowhere in this future is safe. Although I was disappointed there were no laser bullets here, I appreciated the realism of this future. However, the biggest con for me was the story. In particular the character of Marcus. John Connor should've been the primary character here where he would be on a desperate journey to find Kyle Reese before the machines get to him, but instead, they made him a secondary character and made Marcus the protagonist. As JoBlo said, they had a lot of creative opportunities here, but they decided to create a forgettable character like Marcus that served no real purpose at all.

    Terminator was terminated after Judgment Day in 1991.. the main loophole being that Kyle Reese was sent back in time by John Connor to save his mother first, then John... but turns out that Kyle Reese is to be the father of John Connor, who travels back and impregnates his mother, who he was assigned to save by his own son, before he was born.. so there's that...

    • @kevinfox500
      @kevinfox500 4 года назад +1

      Maybe, but, in the true timeline, before the war, before anyone or thing was sent back, who was John's father? Kyle coming back created a ripple effect, that changes the timeline, sending it into a different time, as of 12 May, 1983 (where it was a Thursday, not Saturday. Movie mistake explained. )
      The simple fact is, most women do not know they are pregnant until the first missed period, so Sarah could have already been pregnant, and not known it yet, thus making Kyle, even in the new timeline, not the father.
      She may have lied to John, simply to ensure Kyle was sent back, so she would have him in her life, even did that short time, and to ensure she would have that pivotal change, so she would find out about the machines, and how to fight them, so she could pass that on to her son.
      Chicken and the egg question. Which came first, can be applied here. But, John existed, before Kyle came back, at least once. Chances are, he still would have, no matter who came back, as a protector.
      Just a theory, but I already know others are going to jump on me over it.

    i recently heard that in the pre-executive-meddling-script the character of John Connor was to die at the end, and have his face transplanted onto the robotic Marcus Wright who would then go on to impersonate John and lead the human resistance to victory in the following films.
    this, for me at least, would have revitalised the franchise by exploring the blurry line between machine intelligence and organic intelligence. can machines become human? can humans become machines?

      @michaelboyes5849 4 года назад +2

      That's true, but you are missing one important detail: after taking on the appearance of John Connor, Marcus is deleted and Skynet takes over the body, showing that Skynet was using him as a trojan horse the whole time, and can now use the Connor persona to finish off the resistance.
      I hate the ending that they went with, but doubt I would have liked the original any better.

    15 years old and most have forgotten this was part of the long-lasting sci-fi franchise
    At the time though it was the only new Terminator film we had after 6 years since 'Rise of the Machines'
    The difference is this one actually showed us what happened after the machines took over becoming self-aware and nearly conquering all of mankind
    The film definitely delivers on the action department no doubt thanks to McG’s direction; plus the filmmakers show us more various machines like Motor-Terminators, Hunter Killers, and giant Harvesters
    There's lots of references to the previous entries and the last act delivers one hell of a final battle
    Particularly with the T-800s walking around like big skeletons and they are freaking scary, still plenty of practical effects to spare not just digital
    There's plenty of good performances too
    The film is just empty on an emotional level and not all the supporting characters have enough time to be developed
    Yet Marcus is the one here with a chance to redeem himself being the somewhat 'salvation' for Connor and the others
    At least they had Arnold Schwarzenegger make a quick cameo too even if he was unavailable due to being Governor of California
    Skynet even uses a different tactic to infiltrate the humans to eliminate the threat
    The film isn't one of the worst things out there it's just when you compare it to the first two it's tricky because it doesn't have anything to do with time travel and is more focused on skirmish war lifestyle plus the ownership rights got shuffled around repeatedly next to ideas that never got fully explored
    After all this time the movie is much more entertaining than 'Genisys' which flat out took a giant fall down although 'Dark Fate' is a slightly better movie
    Maybe less dreary ness would’ve helped and looking at the mechanics of Skynet itself but as far as an action film goes it lives up to that extent, it was an interesting experiment trying something different if not fully executed
