- The USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) successfully executed the first live-fire test of the MK 57 Vertical Launching System with a Standard Missile (SM-2) on the Naval Air Weapons Center Weapons Division Sea Test Range, Point Mugu, Oct. 13. The ships’ stealth and ability to operate in both the open-ocean and near-shore environments creates a new level of battlespace complexity for potential adversaries. The Zumwalt class will also operate as a key enabler in the acceleration of new warfighting capabilities and rapid development and validation of operational tactics, techniques, and procedures.

Ahusluh Entertainment TV Production SL the rail guns on the zumwalt are too expensive to take off and replace the problem was the ammunition was too expensive so it couldn’t fire but my question is why have a stealth ship that can’t even use its main armament ? Or is there another type of ammo that is being designed?!

Okay i finally found an answer:
It is the same explosion, but we hear it 2 times.
When the missile launches, all the fire inside the VLS Cell escapes through a hole in the bottom and goes to the top, generating the impression of the first explosion. Then when the missile actually starts going up, the difference of sounds between the VLS Cell and the open air create the impression of the second explosion.

@@montagne8820 The Sm2 missile is a little over 400k. The 1.2 million you are talking about is upgrading older models to the AZ model.
Proven? No major powers have fought each other since ww2. For the last near century we’ve been going through simulations to the point at which nobody really knows how virtually any weapon system will perform against a near equal enemy. The military has more or less shooting at imaginary targets.
@@xxjr8axx Yes proven, missiles are proven... Compared to the cannon which was originally designed. Russia and the US fought back in 2018 with the US killing around 200-300 Russians. It was called the battle of khasham. Russia denied this happened until the widows spoke out since they never even got their husbands bodies back for the longest time since Putin denied it.

@@ThatCarGuyApart from that you said that coalition aircraft were involved, last time I checked the T55 and T72 didn’t have much in the way of anti aircraft capabilities and I highly doubt the rebels would have any guided surface to air missiles.

Does the Zumwalt carry illuminators so the SM-2 can home in on a target or does the SM-2 have a Phoenix type warhead and carries it's own illuminator?
X-Band AN/SPY-3 Multi-Function Radar will cue the missile to its target
The upcoming SM-2 blk IIIC and ESSM blk II will have active radar seeker

Not really. They're very expensive. Don't build anymore until the 3 we have can prove they are capable and worth the money. Build more Burke's or replacements for the Tico's, cheaper than a Zumwalt.

Maybe someday they will receive guns that work or at least design a gun that doesn't have such expensive ammunition. And the ships might be much better when they develop Laser Weapon Systems. But until we have equipment that works on these things, I say don't build anymore.

I believe that in terms of ensuring the durability of the launcher, the missile should be fired from the launcher with compressed air or a small powder charge as in the SAM type S-300, and then the propulsion engine should be turned on. I think it is wrong when gunpowder gases burn the missile body until it comes out of the launcher.
Missiles do not use gunpowder! And the missile body is not burned. It works just fine.

@@oculosprudentium8486 the Zumwalt has 360 degrees of cameras plus motion sensors. US policy is to shoot first and ask questions later if an unidentified boat/ship approaches a US ship. At least 3 companies are working on developing ammunition for the 6 inch guns and two types of medium caliber guns have been added plus M60's and M249 SAW are carried.

Isn't this the overpriced, obsolete and cancelled failure ship of the US?
Ya. The independence and Freedom classes seem to be fine for the role of an LCS, but this thing has sub-par armament (there is barely even ammo for its main guns too) and is the size of a cruiser. I don't think the hull design itself is bad (in an uneducated opinion based on its performance), just a bad idea the way they tried to outfit them. If it had greater armament and was actually built to be a cruiser, it might have been an absolutely incredible ship.
