Just want to say I appreciate your channel a lot! It has been a great source of information for me in a world where there isn't a lot of metal bass information out there, relatively speaking. You've influenced my playing quite a bit in multiple facets, and MBM has been a big part of that. Whatever you decide to do going forward, I'll be along for the ride!

I'm having a hard time properly articulating what my expectations are for your channel; What I can say is that you are currently the only channel I follow in regards to learning about bass. I find that non-metal bassists don't interest me at all; I like their music, they have talent, but I prefer my "instructors" to understand the music I enjoy and play. As to your later points, I don't really care that other channels are "already doing a certain type of lesson or topic"...I want the metal version of that, and I want it from you.

With my work schedule, I usually don't watch the videos the day they come out. This one for example I didn't watch until this morning. I would pay 5 or $10 a month to be able to access all the content you already put out. I find trying to sort through everything on RUclips is difficult if not impossible. Maybe because I do it from my phone and not a computer so I've limited access. But I'll try to hunt down a video that you did months ago and can't find it

Thank for the straight forward talk! I think live streams would be very awesome!! And maybe doing mods live or high end bass reviews or just bass reviews in general. I know there are other channels that review basses but it’s still cool to have options out there. I do look forward to MBM to come, there’s usually not to much cool things to look forward to on mondays I see when you post something and can’t wait to get home and sit down and watch the video. Let’s get a tour of the crib!! And see your basses! I want to learn how to mod so badly!! Also been wanting to put a EMG pickup in my MM bass but don’t know what the best one is for that classic tone is.

Anything you’ve done has kept me interested, I just haven’t “liked” every video. I’m always learning something for you. Do what you gotta do. I know I’ll be here to see what you’re putting out.
Hey Rodney !! Love your channel , I've been commenting here and there , i totally understand what you mean , maybe you can do metal Bass talk instead of MBM , so as you said it comes when it comes , and have the freedom to post other random stuff in between , i love the episode where you analyze other bass players etc etc , definitely i want this channel to continue so do what you have to do, keep up with the good work 😁👌
Hey Federico. Thanks for being a part of the channel. I think a lot of the talk will move to the new podcast. That will allow me to do more gear review, analyzing players, etc.
First, thanks for all the time and work you put in to the channel. You helped me quite a bit with some mental blocks and opened up my perspective on technique some as well. It will be good to see this continue in whichever form it morphs into. I agree with you that working with a deadline for a social interation may not be the best approach though.
Thanks for being a part of the channel. I definitely think I'll be able to cover things with more variety and varying formats then I do now, and for people who want that regular stable show, they may want to move to the new podcast.
I just found you a few weeks ago and I subbed immediately. One thing I believe is that content that takes it's time has more room to put love into it. Rushing a weekly deadline can be evil, especially when there are things in your life other than RUclips. Because I'm knew here I don't think my opinion is as important as some fans that have been around longer, but I hope you figure it out and get the success here you deserve.
I googled and searched RUclips for “Rodney McG skeleton key bass”. That is something I would be interested in, but it wasn’t clear which RUclips video had it in the past. Sorry I don’t have any ideas on metal bass Monday’s. I liked tuning into it live, but the numbers on people rewatching a live stream video are probably dismal. Something tells me that gear and song reviews get more views than theory and lessons. I would love for you to do a deep dive into learning a bass line of a particular song. What makes the bass part great, why you should learn it, how to play the different parts, and what scales they are based off of.
It's not something published, It's a course I teach via a set of 4 in person video lessons. If you want more info, just drop me a line at Rodney@rodneymcg.com. Defintely more content like what you described in the works.
I love the channel and your content. I’ll be here watching no matter what direction you decide. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with all of us and helping us grow as musicians ourselves!
I appreciate your professional opinion and experience. Why does everyone else come here? Because if you knew what your community touches base with you for, then you could do content on that. While doing your opinion on a new band you have your eyes on. Or an artist technique you really appreciate. Then on you Patron based content could be these shred shed monday. Maybe reaching here. But I think your informed angle has helped me immensely. Cheers!
I have the 4 & 7 string of this bass. The key is practicing a lot. I got used to the wide neck of the 7 and can go back to a 4,5,6,7 string and it doesn't feel weird.
Thanks again for all the content you've put on here for us and looking forward to what you've got cooking. You keep posting em, I'll keep watching em. And with a bit of luck I'll have something as witty and not too cleaver by half as the hashtag timstaraceismyspiritanimal I've got a few Ibenez' (Ibeni?) in my arsenal, the BTB 5 string is totally different beast from SDGR line (I used to find the string spacing on the Sound Gears too tight at the nut, but my tastes have changed a little) and I just love the wide/thin neck, kinda like the old Peavy TL series. And again, thanks for indulging an old man at the YYNOT show. Was a pleasure meeting and chatting with you.
I had only used an SDGR as well, and it's what put me off of them (plus their pickup choices) I'm finding this to be a pleasant suprise. It was great meeting you, always awesome to put a face with the avatar!
Hey Rodney I’ve been watching since the beginning (thank you!) and here’s my 2 cents: I like it when you have your bass in hand and teach concepts all bassists should know. I don’t think there’s enough of that to on your show. For example, while I’m a “metal” bassist, I find I’m learning much more from Mark at Talking Bass, and here’s why: he methodically teaches basics like the importance of chord tones, for example. He’ll start out with a brief description of why a technique is important, then get right to it by demonstrating it, with a click track, and provide a link with a pdf of tabs to use. Side note: I find the tabs helpful. Anyway, I’ve learned a lot about music theory from that guy. I’d like to see you focus much more on specifics, like modes, or when you gave a fantastic lesson(s) on the art of tapping. For example, long ago you focused on using 3 fingers, and one finger (you like the middle) and that blew my kind because NOBODY else out there explained that like you did! All the rest of the stuff I just skip through. I guess I’m trying to say I’d like more concentrated focus on just playing the bass; arpeggios, diff fingerings, walking bass lines (for metal?), and whereas Mark isn’t a “metal” guy, you could focus on how all of these basics apply to metal? Not that you don’t do that here, but just more of it? Thanks again, I do enjoy your show.
Really appreciate the input. I'll keep it in mind. I will consider some new approaches, but the lesson material i've been putting out, etc, seems to be the least popular of all. And the stuff you skip though may be worth a repeat visit. There's more there than you might realize!
Another way to make the channel grow. A lot of these youtube dudes always have challenges or battles, so go after them, do there challenges and win over their fans as well!
I use my extended range instruments more as composition tools. They have a purpose and can sometimes make things a lot simpler if you understand the neck do to the added verticality. My only issue is I have kind of small hands lmao i have to do a little extra work with them. Other than that I like them, but I still have standard ones and short scales too.
If you're having a hard time coming up with new material for a new metal bass monday, you could try repeating some of the topics. as you said an 80 episode back log is quite a lot and for new viewers (and even some of us older ones) it could be hard finding what we're looking for. So I think many people would like to see you going through some older topics, maybe updated, maybe with different examples or applications, either as a way to make it easier for new viewers to learn new techniques or a way for others to go "oh yeah I forgot about that I should try that again"
It's not only new ideas, but it's ones that can be accomplished in a specific time period and in that format. I consider revisiting some things, but I think I may go thr route of exploring things further, and then being able to point to past videos for people to dive deeper into. I appreciate the input.
I have watched the channel take many different forms given the adjustments via the Faustian terms and conditions of the platform and enjoy all the different facets it has taken. Some I’m into others I’m not but I watch all and be sure to like all videos. Really like the lives and gear reviews. (Given you review products others aren’t) 👍🏻 I don’t always have time to interact but really enjoy the content. What ever direction you decide to go I’ll be tuning in always thanks for the work.
Really enjoy the episode and channel. So much so that I became a patron. Also looking forward to the podcast. I haven't gotten to be a part of a Livestream yet but would love to so hopefully those don't go away. Maybe it would be cool to breakdown a classic metal album in terms of just the bass playing, ie Def Leppard Hysteria or Ozzy's diary of a madman? Anyway, love the content and keep it coming. Thanks! 🤘
I have been a bass player for over 25 years. I bought one of these Ibanez 7-string basses, and I love it. The neck is very comfortable considering the sheer size, and the addition of the high f just gives that much more range to work with. The string action is nice and low, and the tone is clear and singing through all registers. My only caveat is that knowing theory and having some experience on a four or five string will be really helpful, as Rodney states in this video. TLDR: If you're an experienced bass player and want to branch out into an instrument that will open up multiple possibilities for chord voicings, bass lines and extended range playing, you will not be disappointed.
You do have great content in your channel! We have been back to our regular jamming with our band. Thanks to all of your insights, I have been working on my tone and it was pretty obvious on our last show a couple of weeks ago! Our sound guy, he’s actually our guitarist, kept on saying that he could here me a lot more with all those mids and clanks in my tone! My amps were less buried than before and since it was an outside show, people were still able to here me from further because the mids got lost less than the sub or bass from my tone. I still have some things to work on with my tone… Here, in Canada, we are also starting to get shows going but venues are so limited to the number of people attending… we are still hoping for a reopening as it was before the sh*t hit the fan!
Congratulations on the 80th episode! How are the pickups In that bass? I’m gonna be in the market for a bass in a couple months and I’m kinda stuck between this and the premium 6 string btb and the Aguilar pickups are a big draw for me but the 7 string is super interesting having owned a 6 string for year that is now fretless so the e yea string just seems cool
I like your channel and hope to see more content in future. After watching ola englunds episodes where he learns new song I thought something like this could be intersting with bass too.
Thanks, Dedfintely more content coming, just not in the same presentation as it is now. I am currently oing some basslines for someone's album, and will be doing some shows on how I wrote and recorded them. Maybe that will fit the same kind of content.
I love MBM and have not been watching a regularly as I should. As things are opening back up, my time is more divided. That said, I enjoy every episode. I would love to see some practical things like live hacks, what to do when... you know, the venue horror stories. :) Also, what about a balls-out, budget bass build? (Is that enough B's?) I know you've covered some of this in sections like, pickups, setup and such. I am just thinking of stuff. I'm heading over to your Patreon now... :)
Congrats on 80 episodes, 7 string is definitely not mine thing, but i do respect if you want to play 7,10,1000 or 1 string bass, as long as it works for you, its fine. Best wishes, looking forward for another 80 episodes and even more (sorry for trash english)
medium size channels are suffering a lot with the new algorithm of youtube :( that must be (in part) the reason of the numbers going down.. but it´s always refreshing to renew yourself, even when it takes work and go out the confort zone
Yeah, I'm sure there are a number of factors. I also need to practice what I preach. I always talk about chops and learning, and that you have to keep out of a rut and move forward. I talk the talk, gotta walk the walk!
Here's something I've observed the last 4 weeks or more; even though I've been subscribed for a long time & have notifications turned on - I'm not getting them. Not just for MBM's, but any of Rodney's video's. When (on my laptop) when I click on the RUclips Premium logo at the upper left, my screen fills up different video's that YT thinks would be of interest but most of these are from channels I subscribe to. When I click on my notifications, I see my list of what channel posted a new video. But I haven't seen you're channel in either of these areas. It was to the point where yesterday I was like "Hey wait, where the hell is Rodney's videos? Has he not posted something in a long time?" So I had to do a specific search to find your channel, click on your video list and THEN I saw that yes, you have been posting new content - which kinda pissed me off that YT is either glitching on my end or their system is doing this intentionally. So I'm not sure if this just an isolated incident with my YT account or perhaps this is happening to other subscribers as well. Has anyone else experienced the same thing?
You're not the only person to tell me that. Only 8% of subscribers are seeing the videos. It goes a ling with what i said in the video. If a video doesn't do well or get interaction, youtube starts burying the channel, even if you are subscribed. It's super frustrating.
@@RodneyMcG What shame. All the work & time put into these video w/ quality content & YT can't even notify me/us that it's up? I wonder if there is a way for YT to correct this or if YT will keep its inner workings & algorithm shrouded in mystery? Anyway, for now I'll just make it a habit to manually go to you're channel to watch videos - which by the way are always top notch. Thanks for putting the term "Wank Tool" in the title of one of your vids as simply reading those two words made me literally lol.
Sorry I am late. I didn't really start looking for a 7 string bass until I found Asterism. To cover some of the parts, they're written and performed as 7 string bass. I know there are workarounds but when I'm ready there are actually plenty of lower cost options for a 7 string bass - oddly enough it's the top tier manufacturers who are more hit and miss with having even more than one model of bass 7 if they put one in the catalog that year.
The other thing about the timing of recent channel face time decline is that gigs are returning, hence so is practice. That means it is likely that folks are asleep? Or jobs replacing gigs have folks working?
It's actually something I've been gradually watching over a number of months. I don't make knee jerk reactions or anything, so I let things go for a while because slumps happen every once in awhile oh, and that's just the way things are. But when it was proven to not be a temporary swing, but an overall trend that's what I knew it was time for some changes. You could definitely be onto something though, that would compound it even more.
After all those episodes, conversations and video lessons I consider you not as some YT bass guy but a friend :) I totally support the channel and always try to leave a comment and like. Probably your work to upload this quality content is much much more. If you decide to do MBM on monthly basis - so be it, but Monday without MBM won't be the same ;) My suggestion - do what you feel and what would be good for you at the first place. Also you can put a few thresholds for patreons. Maybe some extra $ would be good for the channel. And finally - can't wait for this metal bass podcast with Alfie :) Take care man!
Truly appreciate your friendship and you following the channel. Again, I haven't made any hard decisions, it's just time to experiment. If nothing else it will be a little side detour into new content ideas. All the best to you!
Whatever you do I’m down for. I like the shred shit, theory stuff and everything in between. RUclips is a rough thing to pull off. I imagine it is like being in a band and trying to make it. Lots of luck, lots of playing the game. I think doing things on a strict schedule would suck. Worst case you can go the Davie504 route and go from being a stellar player who makes videos to a meme guy. Worked for him 😁
Just call it something like Metal Madness and put it out when you want to. Perhaps if you released it later in the day you might get more live viewers. If your not taking questions it doesn't matter when you record or release it. Just my 2 cents. I enjoy the channel a lot.
I think for the riff ideas you come up with you should create an Instagram and post it on there. Outher then that, I have faith you know what your doing and ima keep watching your videos 🙌
Is there possibility to review some of Darkglass equipment? All I see around YT are some hips and nerds, but no bass concious metal musicians take on this brand.
Hmm, I would think it would be covered comopletely by now. I can look into it, but I did a outreach to Darkglass a long while back and they didn't seem really interested in new reviews. If someone I know wants to lend some out, maybe i'll give them a shot
Metal bass monthly so you can be happyand not rushed, put in something for all skill levels and microscope kickass ass. And review even gear your not a fan of try to reach the new breed coming up. Maybe this will help.i think you kickass but sometimes its just to advance for us slower learners.
Hi Rodney. Your channel is great! No need to force yourself make a video every week. Just call the next the one Metal Bass #81 and release it whenever it's ready and you're happy with it. I'll be here watching whatever comes out whenever it comes out. Keep up the great work!
Zero fret was definitely an attraction. I'm a big fan. And the top string is f, but I can definitely see a case for changing that tuning for some pieces.
7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 dwarves. 7, man, that's the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby.
2 Immediate thoughts come to mind (I'm currently at 13:12 in the video). Firstly, what is Metal Bass Monday? And what is it's remit? You do a wonderful job of getting a huge variety of content under the MBM umbrella and maybe the fickle world of the YooChoobz (and it's neatly separated audiences) is not quite "getting it" or able to process the way the topics change into algorithms and demographics. The second one is this, around the world (to a large degree, check your viewers countries to see for sure) people are coming out of varying degrees of lockdowns and staying in/at home and are now eager to get out and are leaving behind those pastimes they were so involved with whilst they were under lockdown or something similar. You may find that the pendulum will swing back in this particular case once everyone has got the "party with friends and family" out of their systems. Hope this helps my friend, thank you for what you do and good luck with your channel.
I enjoy metal bass, but I will say using double thumbing and all other techniques improve all forms of music.I think dig in on scales.patterns. picking hand techniques.❤also cover some intricate victor wooten songs.or some archspire basslines.ppl dig that I know I do.So if you play and tab ppl enjoy that. They can learn new techniques from them.

I've got a few Ibenez' (Ibeni?) in my arsenal, the BTB 5 string is totally different beast from SDGR line (I used to find the string spacing on the Sound Gears too tight at the nut, but my tastes have changed a little) and I just love the wide/thin neck, kinda like the old Peavy TL series.
@@RodneyMcG thanks and keep rockin for us! I’ll keep watching whatever you do. It’s a great show.
Another way to make the channel grow. A lot of these youtube dudes always have challenges or battles, so go after them, do there challenges and win over their fans as well!
The sad thing is, I get so little time to check out other videos, i never know they happen 😂
Make it a practice to make time for checking out the big name youtubers, and when they challenge, Destroy and Conquer🤘
Here you go man.
ruclips.net/video/_AYFoXKLRVQ/видео.html
I use my extended range instruments more as composition tools. They have a purpose and can sometimes make things a lot simpler if you understand the neck do to the added verticality. My only issue is I have kind of small hands lmao i have to do a little extra work with them. Other than that I like them, but I still have standard ones and short scales too.
I'm pretty much the same
If you're having a hard time coming up with new material for a new metal bass monday, you could try repeating some of the topics. as you said an 80 episode back log is quite a lot and for new viewers (and even some of us older ones) it could be hard finding what we're looking for.
Thanks for hanging out!
Thanks! 🤘
A big breakdown of some early Ozzy / Bob Daisley is in the works 😉
@@RodneyMcG Awesome, Bob Daisley is one of my influences on bass.
@@adamtrammel6525 He's probably the person that contributed most to me picking up the instrument.
Your channel is 100% pure bass gold! ! Good job \m/
Thanks, glad you're enjoying it!
Well said
hey rodney. real like your show. Maybe some tipps for concert playing. eq setting during rehearshal or or ot
Great idea.
I still have some things to work on with my tone…
Here, in Canada, we are also starting to get shows going but venues are so limited to the number of people attending… we are still hoping for a reopening as it was before the sh*t hit the fan!
Glad to hear it, Kim. Congrats on the new gigs and new beast tone!
That’s a beautiful bass. I am considering it.
It's one of the few 7 strings I've found comfortable to play, but it is seriously heavy
Thanks, Zach. I may not be the best one to give an opinion as I don't like Barts of any kind. They are functional, but I'm putting EMGs in it.
Also, what about a balls-out, budget bass build? (Is that enough B's?) I know you've covered some of this in sections like, pickups, setup and such. I am just thinking of stuff. I'm heading over to your Patreon now... :)
Good ideas, Russ. Thanks!
Congratulations!#80💜
Thank you!!
Keep doing MBM. I look forward to Mondays just for your show. I would hate to wait weeks or months for a new episode.
Just because there might not be a specific MBM episode, doesn't mean there won't be weekly content of some sort. Often on Mondays.
Good stuff
Congrats on 80 episodes, 7 string is definitely not mine thing, but i do respect if you want to play 7,10,1000 or 1 string bass, as long as it works for you, its fine. Best wishes, looking forward for another 80 episodes and even more (sorry for trash english)
Thanks for hanging out on the channel!
medium size channels are suffering a lot with the new algorithm of youtube :( that must be (in part) the reason of the numbers going down.. but it´s always refreshing to renew yourself, even when it takes work and go out the confort zone
Thanks, and glad you like the little jab in the title 😉🤘
Now I need it.
Do it!
New sub here. I have this bass. It’s an awesome instrument.
I'm actually pretty suprised at the quality, and it wasn't very expensive
If you decide to do MBM on monthly basis - so be it, but Monday without MBM won't be the same ;)
My suggestion - do what you feel and what would be good for you at the first place.
Worked for him 😁
Yeah, I don't think i'll end up in clown land. The shoes are uncomfortable 😂
Just call it something like Metal Madness and put it out when you want to. Perhaps if you released it later in the day you might get more live viewers. If your not taking questions it doesn't matter when you record or release it. Just my 2 cents. I enjoy the channel a lot.
Thanks for the input, I'll definitely consider those points.
I really wish the algorithm would just show people the videos they subscribe too... If I say subscribe, I want to see it on my feed, not supressed
I'm with you. I've gotten a lot of people telling me they've even been unsubscribed.
I think for the riff ideas you come up with you should create an Instagram and post it on there. Outher then that, I have faith you know what your doing and ima keep watching your videos 🙌
I'll probably post a bit more there. I stopped when i wasn't doing as many performances. There are some older clips over there. Thanks for the input.
@@RodneyMcG of course, Thankyou for content Rodney!
Livestream or bi-weekly sounds reasonable 🙂 maybe introduce some news from the scene. Less prep time but still content with your identity
I'm thinking that maybe a good direction. I also think the podcast will fill that hole a bit. That one will be a weekly show.
Side note: there's nothing wrong with doing the Rodney version of a topic. Different lecturers click for different people
Is there possibility to review some of Darkglass equipment?
Good thoughts, thanks, Serg!
Hi Rodney. Your channel is great! No need to force yourself make a video every week. Just call the next the one Metal Bass #81 and release it whenever it's ready and you're happy with it.
I'll be here watching whatever comes out whenever it comes out. Keep up the great work!
Wow. And a zero fret on the seven. Top string F/F#?
Zero fret was definitely an attraction. I'm a big fan. And the top string is f, but I can definitely see a case for changing that tuning for some pieces.
Asterism Band..
Brought me here
They have 7strings bassist
Why not both?
Both?
@@RodneyMcG Useful and a wank tool.
Oh, totally! My favorite combo 😂
I'll admit, I didn't watch the shred shed videos. However it's not because I'm not interested. I just haven't had time yet.
It will be there when you're ready😉
7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 dwarves. 7, man, that's the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby.
😂
Hope this helps my friend, thank you for what you do and good luck with your channel.
that has to be the thinnest sounding bass I’ve ever heard
I thought this was going to be a review for a 7 string bass but it was pretty far off of that. Maybe next time.
