  • Walk into Richmond Waldorf School and it won't take long to realize that you're in a truly unique educational environment. Maybe it's the scent of fresh bread baking in the kindergarten. Perhaps it's the sound of the fourth graders practicing violin or the first graders stomping out a changing series of rhythms as they begin learning their multiplication tables through games and movement. Or it could be the sight that becomes familiar to every Waldorf parent-the sight of children joyful and eager at the start of the school day, crowding happily at the door of the classroom as they wait to be greeted individually by their teachers.

this school is awful. It's really gone down the drain. they re-hired an emotionally abusive Russian teacher because she has friends on the board who travelled to Russia with her. There was a mass boycott of this school in 2020 and now again in 2023

while i don't agree with everything from waldorf schools, it doesn't break and destroy children, like the public schools, and it certainly doesn't turn beautiful beings into slaves!
    which is great as fuck!

In a city where blacks represent 45% of the population, it is sad to see so many white faces. Waldorf schools are based on the pedagogy of anthroposophy, a made-up philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, who died in 1925. Waldorf schools eschew any modern educational techniques or applications that have been developed in the last 98 years since his death. Steiner was neither a parent nor a trained educator. Parents who have put their children in Waldorf after public schools routinely find that their academic skills atrophy and they test a grade or more behind their peers in public schools. Children who leave Waldorf to matriculate to public or other private schools find they need remedial academic tutoring to catch up with their peers. It's bad enough that lessons in lower grades consist entirely of copied text off the blackboard but unconscionable that reading isn't formally taught until 2nd grade based on Rudolf Steiner's absurd sign of 'reading readiness' as the loss of baby teeth. Math is typically only taught 1-2 days formally in lower grades (2-3)* regardless of the school's insistence that math is 'woven' into the daily curriculum, it is not enough for students to master the required mathematical skills necessary to be successful with higher forms of math later. There is also an undercurrent of racism and bigotry ingrained in the Anthroposphy pedagogy as well. You will not find black crayons or black paint at Waldorf schools and children of color that do enroll, eventually will leave. Blonde, blue-eyed white children are favored above children with dark hair and skin. When my daughter was at RWS there was a huge turnover in students. The majority of her class left with us at the end of the year. Art, handwork, and outside play should not come at the expense of academics. If you have been charmed by the lovely pastel walls and the adorable gnomes adorning the hallways and classrooms, I beg of you to do a deep dive into Rudolf Steiner and racism and Anthroposophy and the pervasive bullying and child abuse that is all too common in Waldorf schools worldwide. The ugly side of Waldorf schools is kept hidden by a system where teachers are literally in charge -- there is no principal or headmaster that makes final decisions and because of Steiner's anthroposophy student bullying is often ignored as it is considered part of the student's karmic 'lesson'. The information is all available and you'll find that the bad and the ugly far outweigh the 'good' of Waldorf schools. Do your research, ask lots of questions, and talk to former students and parents who have left, if the school will let you. Search for Waldorf Survivors and Steiner Survivors on google, that will get you started.
*I'm unfamiliar with grades 4-5 as I pulled my kid out in 3rd grade after outside testing showed her academic skills in reading and math had degraded while at RWS.
