Well I'm happy that RUclips suggested this video, I have been watching a lot of Sporty stuff lately. Nice bike and good back story about it. I am one of the lucky ones that came back from Vietnam also. A couple of things got me interested, when you said it has been sitting since 1984 and the front brake doesn't work. I bought a 1978/79/80 whatever Sporty a few years ago at an estate sale. The tires are brand new with all the rubber tips with a 1990 date stamp, last registration was 1994. The engine was pulled and made a lot of 1/4 mile trips. Along the way it acquired Sputhe cases, 4 1/4 " stroke, 4 spark plugs and I think very lumpy cams. He rebuilt the engine and put it back in this frame and got it running before he passed. Just a slight discoloration on the new pistons. It also has no brakes, just dry, crusty seized up hunks of metal. I just started working on it off and on a few months ago. I'm going through the bike front to back, the master cylinders have me baffled, I don't want to replace them. If your master is similar and one of us figures out the solution, it would be helpfull. I have signed on and will be looking over your shoulder, trying not to be too much of a nuisance. Happy wrenching!

Well u know! 😂 anyways ya your sporty def sounds like a sweet project I’m in love with the sportys even still today after all the years. I will be putting up new videos on the bike as Im financially able it turns out the accelerator pump on the carb is frozen in the case. The accel rod is steel and the case is aluminum somehow it got stuck in there and even with dangerous levels of heat I can’t break it free so I think that’s the culprit for it dying off on me. Im going to have to either try to machine that all out or throw a super E or B on there. Im leaning towards the E but again parts are hard to find and pricey when you do.

Awesome Sportster. My first Harley was a 1980 . Now I still ride a 1983 FXWG. Subbed to watch this build.
