Amtrak's Forgotten Florida Train - The Silver Palm [S2: E11]

- Amtrak riders and fans are surely familiar with the Silver Service… Amtrak’s two New York City to Miami trains called the Silver Star and the Silver Meteor. These trains have been a part of the Amtrak network from day one all the way until now. But there was a third Silver Service train that history has forgotten…. The Silver Palm.
The Silver Palm went through many iterations in a short time and had a quite complicated history. I did my best to try an unravel this story in this video. Of course there are many other side stories about Amtrak’s history of Florida service, but these are the basics!
Please comment if there are any other cool parts of this story you would like to add!

MORE INFO that may be covered in previous posts: In Jacksonville and all points south and after the merger there was the A line and the B line and then the take over of CSX in central Florida by the New commuter line serving north and south Orlando. AMTRAK decided to run both trains on the A line thru Orlando and eliminate all passenger services from Jacksonville via Ocala. This would allow CSX to move all freight operations off the A line and concentrate thru freight service over the S line into Tampa. This was a decision on efficiency. Rider count was higher over the A line. AMTRAK did provide limited bus service from the S line locations for a few years. Also, the S line was formally the Seaboard Air Line and the A line was the Atlantic Coast Line.
Thank you so much for the additional info!
@@RailWeekly Orlando is one of Amtrak's top stations for passenger volume, so it was a financial decision to serve Orlando instead of the lightly patronized stations on the S Line.
Thank you for this video. I knew about the Silver Palm, but not the exact details as you have presented. Your presentation is very timely for me, as I just recently was involved in a discussion with another railfan who doesn't know (and still thinks) that this train ever existed. I'm clicking the share button to send him the link right now.
Haha! Glad it was helpful! Thank you!
If they shifted the Silver Star to the line via Ocala, it would no longer serve Orlando. Only the Silver Meteor would serve Orlando.
Other Amtrak Florida trains: Champion, Florida Special, Vacationer, and the one from Chicago, the South Wind later named Floridian.
That is a good point! The Orlando theme park traffic is a big part of their business now. And yes, I actually had a part of the video talking about those other Amtrak Florida trains, but decided to cut it last minute to focus just on the Palm for this one. Maybe a future video??
There was also the Amtrak Champion running from NY down to Florida
Yes indeed! I have some footage of the Amtrak Champion and actually cut it from this video as I was editing. I wish Amtrak would bring back the Floridian as well!
Sorry I don't know more about what you're asking. But, another banger of a video!
Thank you!
The Dixie Flyer ran from Chicago to Florida…it was gone long before Amtrak
So many great routes that Amtrak should have kept on!
4:15 probably to keep serving Orlando
I took the silver comet to Atlanta starting in Richmond va😅in 1968
I’m not familiar with the Silver Comet. This was a Seaboard Air Line train that Amtrak didn’t continue?
@@RailWeekly it was seaboard coast line when I rode it. I don’t know if it was ACL or SCL before. It had sleepers and coaches both in 1968.

There's actually a third Silver Service route: The Savannah to NYC Silver Service/Palmetto P089 and P090.
Restore the silver palm/palmetto from Savannah and extend it down to Tampa again via the S Line
That would be great, especially if they added a sleeper and a diner.
I definitely agree with you. I have been hearing rumors if the Amtrak Silver Star and Amtrak Capital Limted are merged they no longer serve Tampa, Florida. I currently live in Tampa, Florida. If that is the case Amtrak should definitely finally extended the Amtrak Palmetto from Savanah, Georgia back to Tampa, Florida again. Because, Tampa is or was Florida's third busiest Amtrak train station. Amtrak's Tampa Union Station has had a increase in passengers over the recent years. Amtrak would be very bad decision if they remove all Amtrak train service from Tampa, Florida. Especially since Brightline has not starting serving Tampa, Florida. Brightline trains are estimated to finally started serving Tampa, Florida starting in the year 2028 or later.
The Florida Special used to run down the east coast😮from New York City to
Miami in the 60s too
Yea, I had a whole section in there about the Florida Special as well as The Champion… but I decided to delete it last minute and just focus on the Palm for this one :-)
Great video! I was born & raised in Tampa and was always fascinated by Amtrak trains at Tampa Union Station. Now I live in Fort Lauderdale, and from my front yard I can see the Silver Star and Silver Meteor crossing the bridge over the New River. Those P42's have quite a growl as they make the grade up to the top of the bridge.
Thank you! I too am lucky enough to have a view of trains from my home. A railfan’s dream! Haha. And enjoy that sound while you can before the P42 are all replaced.
Always, a great video. Thank you for sharing this history with us.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you!!!
I love learning this history, thanks for another awesome video!
My pleasure! Thank you for watching!
