Disney's ToonTown Online was a popular MMORPG game from the early 2000's. Initially released in 2003, ToonTown was a pretty moderate success, marketing itself as a family friendly alternative to things like World of Warcraft. In this video, I talk about its history as well as its downfall.

Honestly it is crazy how dedicated the Toontown Rewritten community is. When I made my video talking about Toontown, I had over 15 people from that community reach out to me and talk about their community and passion for the game. It just goes to show the impact that games like this have had on people's lives. Love the video as always!

I think the coolest memory I have, is when ToonTown was shutting down, I had to say goodbye to my best friend Princess Sadie Purpletwist. I had known her for quite a long time since I played ToonTown for years.
It was so depressing, but fast forward years later to ToonTown Rewritten..... and after playing for some time, I was walking along one of the streets right behind someone with her same name. Turned out it was her and I don’t think I could have been more excited.
(we tried to stay in contact but that didn’t work and so I haven’t heard from her in almost 2 years) I’m sure she’ll show up one day
(Toon name was Noon, but is Shadow Noon on TTR)

I had that very same experience. A friend of mine named Nibbles in TTO, saw them walking around in TTR and was like: " ... nibbles? " -- They were very happy to see me and we played a lot for a while but then I haven't seen em in a few years either. I will never delete them on my list since we were so close.

When I was in 2nd grade, I wanted a Toontown membership so badly and would constantly redo the 3 day trials over and over again until my parents finally bought me a year's membership for my birthday. It was one of the happiest moments of my childhood. Then the computer broke.

It sounds really cheesy to say but Toontown really does hold a special place in my heart. I remember playing it all the time in elementary school with two of my friends and humming the battle music a lot. I couldn't afford a full-time subscription but my local target carried game cards and I remember running as fast as I could just to get a card and play it full time. I continued playing the OG toontown until it closed (I was just entering high school if i recall correctly.) I made *so many* friends online thanks to this game and it broke my heart when it closed.
When TTR came out, I was ecstatic. I remember when I got a beta key for like a day, and it co-aligned with my time on a train. The entire train ride even with the crappy wifi and how buggy TTR was, I still played it. Now I'm in college, and I still regularly play TTR. It's something that I love. The game, the community, everything. It's the only online game from my childhood I look really fondly on to this day.

      Kool Kid Kameron sir
honestly, it IS a good game. its highly strategy and teamwork based, which adds a lot to the fun. the teamwork base makes it easy to make genuinely nice friends. the task-based leveling system is fun and rewarding. there are a plethora of minigames that can give you hp boosts. there are events, and a weekly schedule of minigame events, which give regular minigames a new twist. even after you complete all the mainline tasks, there are plenty of things left over to make your character stronger.
anyway, ultimately, its really up to the individual, but its still not fair to rag on someone just fondly reminiscing on a game they love. :/

We should just drop Toontown and come together and make an inspired game of it. So we can actually pay for it or donate to help the development.
I Love toontown but it’s gonna be gone later on. If we can however Buy assets like the cogs or even Gags. we can totally make a game to remember. Toontown is old it needs someone to make a 2019-2020 update.
Toontown rewritten’s community is half and half about loving it and hating how slow development is. No money flow is the big reason. Yes it’s fun not paying, maybe a inspired game will be Free to Play and have micro transactions for clothes, gag(weapons) reskins and doodle accessories.
I’d love for people to do this, I’d join in because I’m a Software Development Student. Coding is less of a chore for me.
That’s just my opinion though, Toontown can fully disappear out of existence if everyone wants or live on in a different way where Disney doesn’t attack us for money.

Toontown to this day is still one of my favorite mmo experiences ever. There's something about the way the grind always made you feel like you were always progressing. Getting new gags was so satisfying. Personally, I think the variation is simple but great. Fishing was especially great due to the unique fish you could get, the mini games are fun despite your age, and the raids were high stakes, mini game/ combat mashups. I love Toon Town.

I definitely enjoyed Wizard101, but due to how limited the gameplay area is, which was acceptable back then, not so much now (complete in like, 1-3 hours), I lost interest in it, since I would also have to shove my money down a hole just to be able to get past the tiny bit left of Wizard City to actually get to the next world. It seems unlikely that we'll get an extended F2P area where we are now, but we just have to hope it gets noticed. I really want up to the end of Krokotopia.

This was my first MMO. I remember that having a subscription meant that you got a newsletter with like a trading card and a faux newspaper bulletin about toontown in it.
I think I was like 10 or 11 so I didn't get much of the levelling up or fighting but I loved to run around and explore and play the games.
A fond memory I have is that there was a glitch where, in your home, you could jump on the back of a sofa and out the window and run around out of bounds in the void. That was a fun and popular way to hang out with other players.
Then my mom didn't want to pay for it anymore, but she didn't understand how a subscription service worked, so she thought that by moving the desktop shortcut to the recycle bin, it would cancel my account. Surprise surprise when a year later we got a massive bill for toontown. (which was luckily refunded since I hadn't been active, but still.)

this game sparked my love of video games as a kid. my dad loved it too, and so we had premium membership. i sank hours of family computer time into this game, sitting across the room from my dad, gaming through early childhood. i still play toontown rewritten from time to time. the fan base is incredibly wholesome and dedicated and i met several really cool people on there. even caught up with my (now estranged) dad once through there. life’s weird. these little online communities keep people going in weird and wonderful ways.

I really enjoyed this video! I used to play Toontown SO MUCH as a kid, just to see how far I could get before my subscription expired for every month. I also made my first online friends through Toontown. It would be the first thing I did when I would get home from school every day, with my purple duck, Sheriff Fireball Funnymouth (who was so close to being maxed out). I actually applied to work for the Disney Company back in August of 2018, and the day I applied I was just so nervous/excited, that I played Toontown Rewritten for 24 hours straight, because I was just feeling nostalgic. Long story short, I currently work for Disney, and about once a week I go back and check Toontown Rewritten out just to make sure it is as fun as I remember it being. So, thank you for making this video and shining some light on a Disney Classic, it really brought me some joy.

I was one of the TTO beta testing kids, so I’ve been playing the game since about early 2002 when I was 4. As soon as my brother and I saw that fan servers were popping up after TTO shut down, we joined them all and continue to play to this day. I really appreciate the TTR mods because they upkeep the game completely out of loyalty to the game (aka they’re not making any money at all, which is the reason why Disney has held off on a cease and desist). Even original TTO Disney creators like Jesse Schell play TTR and talk to the mods. I particularly appreciate that the TTR mods continue to add new features that weren’t in the original game, such as the new silly meter and current “crash cashbot hq” event going on through the end of May. Heck, I’m even in a Facebook group called ATTA who host daily runs to do tons of different battles and events throughout the day. The community is strong, and we love welcoming new members into a place we hold so dear to our hearts. Thanks for taking the time to test it out!! 😊

This game has such a big place in my heart. I played this game with my grandma when I was 3 or 4 in 2003, I'd sit on her lap while she played for me, there on I played with her until it's shut down in 2013. We soon found out about the different private servers in 2014 and we still play ToonTown together when we can. I truly wish i knew how many hours I put into this game, cuz it has to be literally years. I plan in the next two months to get the original eye and cog gear logo tattooed to show my love and appreciation for this childrens game :) A lot of my friends and family find it silly i still sport a ToonTown Online tee-shirt or that I plan to get a tattoo for this game, but considering it's taken about 15 of my 18 years of living, I think it just shows how much memories and love I've got for this game :)

I always come and go from it, and have always found the game to have a certain liminal feel. It has anywhere from 400 (usually nighttime) to 2,000 players at any time. as a kid, i played toontown and i remember only certain things, like cog buildings, factories and vp’s, and the ability to create more than one toon were membership only. i play toontown rewritten today and they do events like crash cashbot hq, trolly tracks, and fishing bingo. there are thousands of people that still play it all the time! today, you have free access to everything, and most people will grind one toon, finish it, then make a new one and work on that one. i have more fun playing toontown today than when i was a kid, even though i had the membership as a kid!
it’s also fun to see how many college kids, young adults, and parents play toontown still to this day too! some have said even some grandparents play and i think that’s precious!
and as a side note, they have an options button now that allows you to change the keys to your choice, so i have a map of the street on shift, my gag chart on command, and my tasks on option!

I have an unpopular opinion: the Toontown fan remakes are bad. Look, I'm not hating; I just really care about Toontown, and I want to see it in a new modern fashion. I get that people wanna bring the original experience back, but the fact is we have too many remakes of the same tired old game. It's 2019, at least try to be more creative with Toontown. Sure, some new features have been introduced by fan developers, but all of the remakes are still basically the same story wise, gameplay wise, and visually.
It's a shame that no one usually talks about these kinds of things since I think seeing and playing a modernized and totally revamped version of Toontown would be just amazing.

    • @rock9154
      @rock9154 5 лет назад +2

While Corporate Clash is really quite an improvement in many areas, I take monumental issue with the new task system, and the music, where every single track trying to change an old one is trying waaay too hard (the original music is actually real good tho). I would totally play it more if it wasn't so empty.
I regards to a "new and improved" Toontown, I think that would be amazing. The original game feels a bit incomplete, honestly, and I can only imagine a modern title with proper funding and time put into it. However, that ends up being a huge issue for these new servers. While effort is given to revamp the game by multiple teams, they simply lack any funding whatsoever to pump something truly great out (remember, Disney still owns this property). The most popular server, Toontown Rewritten, seems to have no intentions of adding anything truly big to the game (or anything that would take little effort like rebalancing gags- Corporate Clash did this beautifully), and only really want to keep that nostalgia intact. That's probably a big reason people still play, after all, though Toontown is still real solid. Just don't expect anything awe inspiring unless Disney magically wants to reboot the game- in which case they'll likely shut down all fan servers! Yay!

There are a couple of games I used to play. One was Everquest, and it's sister game Mech Quest, which were pretty basic flash MMORPG. One was fantasy themed while the other was sci-fi, but both were free to play up to a certain point where you would need either a credit card or one of the specific game related subscription cards that you could never find in stores. The other was some MMORPG about wizards and witches where you had fight monster of darkness using summoning spells that came in the forms of cards with specific magic elements like fire and lightening tied to them. You were classified into one element by a quiz at the start of the game and you could learn other elements and level up by studying in special classes in the game. I forget what it was called, but it was also free to play until you reached a certain level that allowed you to take on a certain mission that you would need to pay a fee to get into the required area for the mission. All three were fun and I don't know if they are still available to play or if anyone has relaunched them on special servers if they did close down, but I would love to see videos on these games if possible.

What about Toontown Corporate Clash? It's stylized more towards a more modern style of MMORPG with leveling up actually increasing your laff, gag pouch, jellybean jar, etc. with more actual quests, gain experience and jellybeans instead of tasks to get laff increases and such in the first place. It doesn't get as much attention as it should, although it had a crazy launch, at almost 2 thousand players, rivaling TTR's playerbase with content more like the original shutdown TTO. I just hope the major update to TTCC will bring back more players, as it's genuinely a great new change to the original formula of "do this, get this small boost" to the much more enjoyable "Do a wide range of tasks specifically tailored to that specific area/theme to gain experience that overall increases how powerful you are".
I wanna thank you for talking about this game as it had been a part of my childhood as well, even though I had only gotten up to Donald's Dock with my one time purchase of a membership, knowing very little what to do.
Also, yes, my profile icon is based around Toontown. I made my own original character (ACTUAL ORIGINAL CHARACTER NOT LIKE A MAINSTREAM CAT) as a horse. Guess I'll see ya in town!

But I think I found the explanation:
"Originally, free accounts were only allowed three days of unrestricted gameplay before being forced to pay for a membership. This was changed in 2007 to allow free players to play for an unlimited time with certain restrictions on the game. These restrictions originally meant that Toons were bound to the starting neighborhood (Toontown Central) and its buildings and streets, as well as Goofy Speedway where the racing events took place. Toons were also only allowed to complete Toontasks up until the final one that would allow them access to their third gag track. This was changed to allow free players to roam in the streets of all the neighborhoods, and to complete the final Toontask for the third gag track. However, free players could still only enter buildings in Toontown Central and were not allowed to enter the Cogs HQs or Cog buildings outside of Toontown Central."
I'm now certain that I played on a free account during that last phase, I definitely didn't know what Cogs HQs looked like until I played Toontown Rewritten.

Toontown in its current state (Rewritten) is at its best when you're with friends. It's much easier to accomplish Toontasks while in a group, and it feels rewarding to overcome obstacles you could never do solo. Something a lot of the other Toontown servers suffer from is a lack of population, meaning certain feats that require several people to accomplish become impossible to complete and the experience is nullified as a result. Thankfully, Rewritten still has a steady population of at least several thousands of people a day, so you're never quite short of players to work with

Disney's MMORPG's shut down due to lack of upkeep. At least this was the case for POTCO and TTO. As a loyal player of POTCO I can say that a great deal of people stopped wanting to pay for a game that wasn't maintained. And rather than try to get money by fixing this problem Disney Interactive took a gamble by shutting all of these games down and throwing the money at Disney Infinity. I remember the free play in that last month the games were running. It was beyond bittersweet. Especially TTO since I had not played in a while because it was too much to pay for both POTCO and TTO. I played TTR as soon as it came out and kept playing until The Legend of Pirates Online appeared to fill the empty void. I am still bitter about the fact that Disney Interactive shut down Pirates of the Caribbean Online, as well as all the others, on International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Way to stab your players in the gut.
