I saw another man do the same model. He was quicker but he forced the bottom up and similar with the top. It didn't seem right. You never force electric units. Your way works and it works fine. Thanks so much. About rhe extra time, I would waste way more time if I broke the unit using force.

My work schedule changes from day to day, and from week to week. So, I've never-yet experimented with the Schedule function; I simply use the Hold function. The Hold function simply holds the temperature at a specific temperature. When I leave, I simply press Hold for three seconds, when I release Hold, I hit adjustment arrow (up or down) maybe five degrees, then I press Hold for three more seconds. Upon releasing the Hold button, the new target-temperature is set.
Thanks for providing the model number. Now I can search online for the user manual. My thermostat is the same make and model. The battery power was low. And I found it very difficult to remove the cover plate from the backing plate. Because the thermostat slightly lifted on one side since it's not completely snug on the wall. However I was confident to follow through. And I've successfully removed that face cover thanks to your detailed information and instructions on how the cover is made and where to place the fingers to remove it, and so forth.
Nice work! I am having an issue with true lower portion fully engaging and clicking flush in place. The pins engage and the system works, but it’s a few mm from Full closure. There is a bit of corrosive building on the lower pike and I’m wondering if that is blocking it. I didn’t want to force too much. Or could it maybe be the lower hinges coming free that you mentioned at the end?
The Honeywell Thermostat 5.2 Models RTH2300B and RTH221B (my thermostat is UPC Code 085267406123) use two AAA alkaline batteries. However, I've looked at the photos in one of your other comments, and I am unfamiliar with the model you've photographed; your batteries might be different than mine. The Quick Installation Guide which was packaged with my thermostat lists 1-800-468-1502 as Honeywell's Customer Care phone number. Hopefully this phone number can help as you try to figure out how to work with your thermostat.

Dear Sir, I have that very thermostat. I am in need of some help covering holes from molly bolts. I have these holes that provided for attachment of my original thermostat. My newer Honeywell is just about half the size of my original. Where would I find a plate to fit the Honeywell? I was thinking plastic. I don't want to go with a wood plate. It would be too overstated. I have seen wood plates for towel racks and such. I probably need a lower profile.
While I have done some minor handy work with walls, my best suggestion on solutions for wall repair is to ask around at local hardware stores. It's very likely a clerk at a local hardware store can provide excellent familiarization regarding products which might work well. Once you've got some product suggestions, you might also be able to find RUclips videos where RUclipsrs offer suggestions about the techniques they use with those exact products. I find it's often beneficial to do as you're doing, asking others for their input. Unfortunately, I lack experience in wall repair, which I believe you're seeking. Thank you for commenting. 3:08 to 5:05 could be very important to many viewers. It is one example of why I not only advocate watching entire videos, but also, I advocate finding as many videos as can be found, relative to a particular project, before attempting the project. Still, yes, if RUclips videos had a compromise between "Thumbnail" and "Full Video," such as "Brief Summary of Video," then the spot to which you point would make an excellent "Brief Summary." I'm not sure. But, when I changed mine, the clock went to 12:00. So, it seems very likely the thermostat will lose its data, when the batteries come out.
Thank u but I wish I had watched this first. I disconnected my thermostats without turning to off position. Now the front screen is blank. What do I do?
Susan Wynn I think your best option is to call the Honeywell Help Line. But, it may not be operating right now, on Christmas Eve. And, I don't have their Help Line phone number with me. A feasible other option may be to, with the thermostat first removed from the backing plate, carefully separate the faceplate from the thermostat. Doing so will release the buttons and the digital display. So, doing so in a clutter-free environment, such as on a cleared-off tabletop, would be a good measure to take. Once the display and buttons have been freed, you can try to reassemble the apparatus, using the clips at the bottom of the assembly to re-secure the faceplate to the thermostat; my line of thinking here is: Perhaps the digital display isn't making good contact, at this point in time, wherein the digital display is showing completely blank. Alternatively, please ensure the batteries which you've got installed are both charged and properly oriented. Best wishes!
Thank you, Frank!! I have had this problem for a few weeks and your video was the only one that showed my model of thermostat. All the best from California!
I skipped most of the video but it helped me solved my problem! Highlights: set fan to auto and the other switch is set to off. The thermostat flips open with hinges at the top. Alternate between wiggling the bottom-left and bottom-right to swing open.

Thank you so much mister you been of help I appreciate it!! And don't worry about those bad comments don't let them affect you more than our gratitude 🙏
Adriana Segovia I would double check to ensure that the battery contacts are clean. There are six such contacts, four on the batteries, and two on the thermostat. I would also ensure that the batteries are fresh (strong) AAA alkaline batteries, installed with proper orientation. If doing still gives no display, then I'd carefully investigate whether the faceplate had separated from the thermostat, which could cause poor connections to the display unit. If such investigation doesn't lead to a solution, then I'd suggest calling Honeywell's Customer Assistance at 1-800-468-1502. I hope this helps.
Adriana Segovia For what it's worth: The instruction booklet which came with my thermostat suggests the display will go blank if an access door on the furnace isn't closed. So, I tested this on my system. The result was that opening my access panels had no impact on the thermostat 's display. Also, xtronics.com/wiki/Thermostat_signals_and_wiring.html suggests the kind of circuitry suggested by my instruction booklet isn't common, if it even exists. But, I'm mentioning it here because my instruction booklet suggests such circuitry could result in a blank display. However, if your display is blank even when the battery-energized thermostat is separated from its backing plate, then such circuitry couldn't possibly be impacting the operation of the thermostat 's display.
Dude took so long to get to the point that I just winged it and figured it out myself...?? What was the point of recording this video exactly??? A sleep aid? By the time he got to the point.... I already had the new batteries in and the faceplate back on :(
@@neshabrumley9674 I believe the screen should become functional as soon as fresh batteries are installed, and, as long as the main unit hasn't come apart, during the opening process.
It seems unlikely that your thermostat is a Honeywell RTH2300/RTH221 Series thermostat; as far as I can tell, neither of these thermostats have a circuit which can beep. The front cover was difficult to remove, but I just kept on working at it until it came off. Thanks to you my house is cooling again, and we will be able to sleep tonight. THANK YOU FRANK !! You are a life-saver.
You're very welcome! And thank you for letting me know the video was helpful!
I watched this video in an effort to figure out a way to change the batteries on my thermostat. It's been years since that dreadful day and this video still haunts my nightmares.
LOL. Thank you for commenting; many people also complained about the length of this video. So, I posted a quicker version to ruclips.net/video/YXSfM8WSzBw/видео.html. Your message added cheer to my evening. So, thank you again for commenting. I hope the shorter video will be less of a frustration!
Thank you so much for this informative video clip. I woke up to a cold house and thought something was wrong with my furnace. I googled why my thermostat was blank and then RUclipsd how to change the battery on my model thermostat. I was able to take care of it myself and my heat came on afterwards. This could have cost me hundreds of dollars had I panicked and called a technician to so call fix my furnace. Thank you again.
You're welcome! I'm glad the video was helpful. And, I really appreciate the time you took to comment!
7:45 is when he takes the plate off. I really didn't want to break it since I'm renting so I appreciate the video immensely! Got the plate off and replaced the batteries no problem :)

Thank you so much...realized when I went into my bedroom at almost midnight last night that the heat wasn't on! I was trying to pry the cover off and not wake up my sleeping husband when I gave up and came to youtube. This was just what I needed. (And on a side note...wow, a lot of rude people have posted and instead of giving it right back to them, you listened to their "feedback" and then replied with patience and kindness and a new video. Nicely done sir!)
Thank you! ☺
Long video but helped me I was lost about opening the front afraid of breaking the cover.keep up the good work sir.
OMG OMG OMG *LOL*
You're very welcome! I hope you have a good night, and a Happy Thanksgiving.
I saw another man do the same model. He
was quicker but he forced the bottom up and similar with the top. It didn't seem right. You never force electric units. Your way works and it works fine. Thanks so much.
About rhe extra time, I would waste way more time if I broke the unit using force.
sheldon tucker Thank you for your considerate comment. I agree it's better to get an effective video uploaded, even if it's not perfectly polished/edited; doing so quickly helps people figure out how to do the project, even if the videographer is still unskilled with video and editing. Thanks again.
The actual demonstration of how to remove the faceplate starts at 7:26
Thank you!!!
I love this video. It was very helpful super chill. It was like a meditation. Most the time people talk so fast I can’t figure out what the hell they’re talking about, I have to slow the speed way down. This was perfect.
AWESOME! I'm glad the video was helpful. Thank you for your thoughtful and uplifting comment!
A very patient & thorough mini-tutorial for the mechanically-challenged--at least for me. Thank you !
Tom Connor Thank you for your kind comment! I hope you achieved your goal. ☺
Is this really a ten minute video on how to open a themostat cover?
It is. But, many viewers commented the video was too long. So, I made a quicker video which might prove itself to be as helpful. Its link is ruclips.net/video/YXSfM8WSzBw/видео.html. I hope this helps. Thank you for commenting, and for the constructive criticism, too! I'm also building a playlist of meals and snacks. These snacks and meals seem highly effective at helping me navigate myriad daily challenges: ruclips.net/p/PL0XgdPpu-wZcv15DZFLvUZNp5mGYwT49Q
middle of the night, freezing temps, my batteries ran out, this video saved us!!! Thank you!!!
You're welcome! Thank you for commenting about how the video was helpful!
Thank you very much. This happened to be the exact thermostat in my new apartment. I noticed that the temperature in the apartment was suddenly dropping and found the message "low batt" and nothing else on the thermostat - and of course it was past 10:00 pm. I went online and your video came up first - the long version. But that is ok, I approach anything electronic very patiently. I knew exactly what to do and was able to get it done - quicker than your video. So now the thermostat is working again as it should. Thank you again.
rsshrout01 Thank you for letting me know that the video was helpful! Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you also. It would have been a cold night here otherwise. I understand electricity but am not good with mechanical things so your directions were perfect for me.
7:45 for what you came here for
Thank you for watching and taking the time to guide other viewers. Many people complained about the length of the video. So, I've uploaded a quicker version at ruclips.net/video/YXSfM8WSzBw/видео.html. Dear God the wiggling
Thank you for saving me seven freaking minutes, this guy needs to get on with it
Thank you! Got the cover plate off easily... now for batteries... GOT IT DONE!!! Yayyy! You da man!!! 👍🏻😃
Thank you! My roommates and I have been burning up and I looked up this video, popped my TV batteries in the thermostat and the magic happened!
Awesome! Thank you for letting me know.
Bill, lets be Frank, my wife and I enjoyed your video immensely. I also learned how to put new batteries in the thermostat. Thanks!
Debra Gibson I'm glad the video was helpful for you. Thank you for commenting about it!
I'd rather someone take their time teaching, instead of rushing so much I have to play over and over!!
Thanks!
Summary:
1. Turn heater/AC OFF
2. Turn fan to AUTO
3. Fast forward to 6:25 where he shows you how to giggle the bottom of the front plate loose.
4. Change AAA batteries
5. Replace.
Thank you Frank. My batteries died today and I could not remember how to access them. New ones in and working again.

I'm glad the video was helpful. Thank you for your encouraging comment!
VERY useful video! Trying to help a friend fix her thermostat because it wasnt producing heat, but I didnt know how to get to the batteries to change them! Couldnt find anything else on google that was as helpful as this!
I'm glad the video helped. Thank you for your uplifting comment!
Got it. I lost two cats to heat stroke and lost 10 pounds waiting for the actually part I needed but I got it thanks. Lots of details.
Bjorn Ploopers Thanks for making me laugh! There's also a quicker version at: ruclips.net/video/YXSfM8WSzBw/видео.html
Lmfao :'D
Replacement of batteries starts @7:53 For everyone that needs just that part. thanks for the video Super helpful
Thank you for your comment, with the shortcut. Alternatively, I've uploaded a quicker version too, which still shows the important steps of turning off the thermostat, before removal of the thermostat: ruclips.net/video/YXSfM8WSzBw/видео.html. But, for some reason, the quicker version gets much fewer views. Thanks again for watching, and for commenting!
Took too long to get to the point. Skip to 7.00 mins for actual tutorial.
Start this video at 7:30 to avoid the wait.
I put a schedule but it doesn't listen I set it too 65 but what does leave sleep hold wake mean when you try to set
8 mins to show how to get the cover off? Dude!!
3yrs and this comment is still more efficient than the video
Thanks for providing the model number. Now I can search online for the user manual. My thermostat is the same make and model. The battery power was low. And I found it very difficult to remove the cover plate from the backing plate. Because the thermostat slightly lifted on one side since it's not completely snug on the wall. However I was confident to follow through. And I've successfully removed that face cover thanks to your detailed information and instructions on how the cover is made and where to place the fingers to remove it, and so forth.
Thank you for commenting about your success with the face cover. I hope the thermostat is now working well, for you.
Nice work! I am having an issue with true lower portion fully engaging and clicking flush in place. The pins engage and the system works, but it’s a few mm from
Full closure. There is a bit of corrosive building on the lower pike and I’m wondering if that is blocking it. I didn’t want to force too much. Or could it maybe be the lower hinges coming free that you mentioned at the end?
before i remove the plate off...what type of batteries do they use? AAA or AA?
The Honeywell Thermostat 5.2 Models RTH2300B and RTH221B (my thermostat is UPC Code 085267406123) use two AAA alkaline batteries. However, I've looked at the photos in one of your other comments, and I am unfamiliar with the model you've photographed; your batteries might be different than mine. The Quick Installation Guide which was packaged with my thermostat lists 1-800-468-1502 as Honeywell's Customer Care phone number. Hopefully this phone number can help as you try to figure out how to work with your thermostat.
The info pertaining to the actual changing of the battery was accurate and helpful. The extraneous info - changing the lighting, zooming in and out, explanation how the various parts of the heating/cooling, etc, etc, etc - rendered the video really unnecessarily long. Thank you for the bus that were actually helpful.
THANK YOU!! Got sooo aggravated trying to open this thermostat and appreciated your demo and commentary!
Awesome! I hope the issue which first led you to the video, has been successfully resolved. Thank you for commenting!
Hey bud how long does it take you to find the G-Spot, I had to actually plug my phone in just to finish watching this video
I'm sorry to learn the battery was near-failure. Many people similarly felt the video was too long. So, there's also a quicker version at ruclips.net/video/YXSfM8WSzBw/видео.html. Thank you for commenting! And, question having been asked: It seems I just happened-upon the gift, unsought, in a passive manner, through free-form feedback, as seems an excellent way to have found it; I highly recommend such interplay.
Thank you for your informative video. Do you have a video on setting it up manually? Previous temp and new temp both say hold. And now it is staying on the lower temp and not increasing to the new temp. I'm freezing. Thank you again.
No offense intended, but this instruction video - that should have taken about two minutes - took 10. I was wondering if it was going to include an intermission.
No offense received; I appreciate the input. Many viewers agree the video was awfully long. So, I posted a quicker version at ruclips.net/video/YXSfM8WSzBw/видео.html . Thank you again, for commenting!

Great! I assume the video helped boost your confidence, and the replacement went well. Thank you for commenting!
I big thumbs up of like for you, sir. Batteries switched. However, editing, my man. Editing. Cut it down by 2/3 and you have an awesome video.
Thanks for the tips! Many people have commented the video was too long, so I've uploaded a quicker version at ruclips.net/video/YXSfM8WSzBw/видео.html
Very helpful, but this could have been a 1 minute video, versus the 9:56 duration.
By the way, if you're interested in checking out some different kinds of videos I'm interested in, two of my favorite playlists are ruclips.net/p/PL0XgdPpu-wZcv15DZFLvUZNp5mGYwT49Q and ruclips.net/p/PL0XgdPpu-wZcabpiBMsJwfEdInIlOt2Dt
Can you explain a couple more times the definitions of the cover plate and backing plate and how these differ? I’m having trouble following these very technical terms.
Use Google. This is a 7 year old video. I needed to exchange my battery and this did the trick.
THANK YOU for taking the time to do this video. I am grateful. Such a simple activity - replacing the batteries - can be so annoying in this particular unit. Again, I thank you.
Too many complaints, the video was helpful, thank you

Still can't get mine to open. I think the problem is that the back end plate is starting to come lose so when I "wiggle" the back attached to the wall starts to wiggle as well.
U. Have. To. WIGGLE !!
Thank you, second time I came to this site, and watch your video. Last time a year ago, this time today. I decided to change out my batteries. before they go dead. Winter is here in Alaska.
@@MsCeylon Excellent! We usually change our thermostat batteries twice a year, when we change the smoke detector batteries, when Daylight Savings time changes, just to be extra sure the batteries will stay strong, and won't cause issues. I hope all goes well for you, in Alaska, this winter. Thank you for commenting!
why did Honeywell design something so basic, a thermostat, to be so Intensively difficult to simply remove the cover and put back on?
Oh my goodness right? The thing is stuck tight on there!
So that we could break it and have to buy a new one.
As someone in the habit of designing solid solutions to various problems, ie Frank Dattilo in LinkedIn, I believe the engineers' primary goal was to strive to eliminate loose-connection-glitches. skip to 7:40
3:08 to 5:05 could be very important to many viewers. It is one example of why I not only advocate watching entire videos, but also, I advocate finding as many videos as can be found, relative to a particular project, before attempting the project. Still, yes, if RUclips videos had a compromise between "Thumbnail" and "Full Video," such as "Brief Summary of Video," then the spot to which you point would make an excellent "Brief Summary." Thank you for commenting!
I got a lot of complaints about the length of the video. So, now there's a quicker version ruclips.net/video/YXSfM8WSzBw/видео.html which people might find, instead. Thanks for the feedback.

when you change the batteries do you lose all programmed settings?
I'm not sure. But, when I changed mine, the clock went to 12:00. So, it seems very likely the thermostat will lose its data, when the batteries come out.
My battery jack metal plate is broken on one side. what to do?
I'm hoping you were able to get a new thermostat, to replace the one with the broken battery port.
Your instructions... and several wiggles got it done. Thank you!
Your comment encourages me; thank you!
I could't figure out for the life of me how to get the dumb cover off......but thanx to u, I got it done!.......THANX!
You're welcome! Thank you for letting me know the video was helpful.
Your video came in handy today. Thank you!
Is there a longer version of this video, perhaps? I was hoping to be able to call in sick because I’m spending the day replacing batteries.
A bit longer than necessary but helpful overall. Thank you.
Start the video at 7:30 to avoid 7 minutes of nothing necessary

I skipped most of the video but it helped me solved my problem!
Highlights: set fan to auto and the other switch is set to off. The thermostat flips open with hinges at the top. Alternate between wiggling the bottom-left and bottom-right to swing open.

Charles Berger Thank you, sir! I really appreciate your comment!
what does it mean when face is completely blank even after i changed batteries?
Electricity is off completely to the air handler.
Dude took so long to get to the point that I just winged it and figured it out myself...?? What was the point of recording this video exactly??? A sleep aid? By the time he got to the point.... I already had the new batteries in and the faceplate back on :(

My problem is after changing the batteries how do I get the screen to come back on ???
@@neshabrumley9674 I believe the screen should become functional as soon as fresh batteries are installed, and, as long as the main unit hasn't come apart, during the opening process.
I have now changed the batteries and it is still beeping. What does that mean?
It seems unlikely that your thermostat is a Honeywell RTH2300/RTH221 Series thermostat; as far as I can tell, neither of these thermostats have a circuit which can beep. However, if your thermostat is a Honeywell, the instructions for my Honeywell thermostat lists 1-800-468-1502 as Honeywell's Toll-Free Customer Care phone number. I hope this helps!
