Edit* Just noticed that during my second edit of this video (due to the block) I didn’t add the playlist effect 😭it was 1 in the morning lol hope you’ll forgive me.
I was so impressed by this that Pentatonix got a playlist on the channel. This definitely falls in my top 10 reactions since I started this channel. Thank you all so much for watching and have a great week, one love ❤️

I recommend their latest "Banger"...Kiss From A Rose 🌹 a Seal cover. It is a live performance and is so good. Please react to this song. You will not be sorry. It's a Vevo Studio live recording. Just when you think they can't get any better...they come out and say "Hold my beer!".

The audio panning on "little high, little low" is a direct quote from Queen. If you listen to Queen's original you'll hear the same panning on the same phrase.
Pentatonix loves Queen, and they love "Bohemian Rhapsody," so they always wanted to cover this song, but they feared that they couldn't do it justice, so they decided to wait until they were sure they were ready. That took them five years, but it was worth the wait - they were definitely ready.
In the early days of Pentatonix, after Epic reneged on the recording contract Pentatonix had "won" on _The Sing-Off,_ Pentatonix started posting to RUclips; it was the only way they COULD publish their music. A lot of those early RUclips videos show the five of them sitting on a couch, with the trio on the back of the couch and Avi and Kevin on the seat in front of them, just five very young people singing their hearts out, making their dream come true. Note that this is the configuration we see them in at the beginning and end of "Bohemian Rhapsody," which is one reason the couch needs to move - it's taking Pentatonix (and us) on a trip down Memory Lane.
The more important reason the couch moves is that it's standing in for the car in _Wayne's World,_ where Wayne and Garth introduced a whole new generation to the genius of Queen by putting a tape of "Bohemian Rhapsody" into the car's tape player.
The couch was motorized, and not very well balanced. (Note that when they're sitting on it their feet don't quite reach the ground. The little curtain thing on the bottom was added to hide the motor.) It kept trying to tip over during the filming and actually managed to throw Kevin off at one point. There was a small platform attached to the back so that Kirstin could climb on the couch from behind - Scott, being a foot taller than Kirstin, didn't need it.
When Mitch lies down on the couch, singing "Too late, My time has come," they're referring to Freddie Mercury's death (the foreshadowing was, of course, unintentional on Freddie's part; there's no way he could have known about AIDS, thank goodness). The other four are walking next to the couch to serve as his pall bearers.
Many people think the megaphone is distorting Mitch's voice to make him sound more like an electric guitar, but it actually has nothing to do with it. The megaphone wasn't turned on, and couldn't have distorted Mitch's voice even if it had been - it was just a megaphone. The electric guitar is all Mitch. Mitch happened to see the megaphone lying around on the set and thought it would make a cool prop, so it's been confusing people ever since.
During the "Bismillah" argument, note that Scott, whose range includes both bass and tenor registers, is actually singing along with both the high and low sides of the argument. Scott has said that this rapid switching is the hardest part of the song for him.
When the camera pans up to show us the starry night sky during Mitch's second guitar solo, it's meant as a tribute to Queen's lead guitarist, Brian May, who has a doctorate in astrophysics.
The four shooting stars honor the four members of Queen.
When the camera pans back down to show Pentatonix lying on the couch together it's meant to recall the cover art for Queen's "Sheer Heart Attack" album.
And when this official video was first released, Brian May posted a link to it on all his social media accounts with the comment: "Enjoy."

A few things, the couch represents in the early days of PTX, they did not have money to shoot their video’s, so they just sat on a couch in someone living room to record. The movng couch represents their journey. Now, when Brian May (now Sir Dr. Brian May) saw this the day after it was released, he liked it so much he shared it on all of his social media, with just one word “Enjoy”. That is high praise from Sir Dr. May. They worked on this on and off for about 5 years, until they thought they had an arrangement that did justice to the original. Mitch does not use the megaphone in real life, it was just a prop so people had something to look at that would draw their eyes where the group wanted them. When you see the night sky that was to pay homage to Brian May, who is now an astrophysics. The 4 shooting stars pay homage to the original., band members. BTW, Queen has never been able to do this live completely. They way they layered in the video of themselves in the video, they just had to run off-stage, and show the opera part on a screen, then come back on screen and finish the song. PTX did it completely, and they do it live. At the end when they fall on the couch in a "cuddle pile", that is paying homage to the Sheer Heart Attack album cover.

This video shows the 'original' members - Avi is the one with the beard and is a bass - he does his own music now and when he left, Matt came in for the empty spot ... Matt is the guy you saw in the first video you watched that was on the far left and had the very deep voice - 'this' is the group that has now been together since about 2017. You can find hundreds of 'covers' they have done, but you can also find many, many 'live concerts' on RUclips. They tour the world, and someone is always putting up their music - They all have amazing voices and are featured in different songs. Those of us who follow Pentatonix (PTX) are call PENTAHOLICS and we 'love' new reactions!! You will do well with new subscribers if you continue with this group. These guys are just flippin amazing alien unicorns! It took them 5 years to feel ready to do this song and to do it the justice that it deserves. They are all massive Queen fans. Brian May, lead guitarist from Queen, heard this song when it came out and posted a link to his socials with the one word comment 'Enjoy!' I feel like that is giving Queen's Seal of Approval right there!
They also inserted a lot of references and easter eggs into this video in tribute to the original video - which by the way, if you haven't seen - you should probably check it out! Queen couldn't perform this song live because of all the layering they did in post! And not only can Pentatonix do this Live, but the Mitch Grassi Guitar has no need for a Megaphone. Mitch just saw it lying around the set and decided to use it to draw attention to who was doing the guitar solo part - the megaphone was not on, Mitch can do this live!
The couch is in reference to their beginning videos where they recorded themselves on various of theirs couches to post onto RUclips after they were dropped by Sony because they didn't think that Acapella would be popular enough to sell records. It is also a tip of the hat to Wayne's World movie scene with the car and head banging to this song which brought in a whole new generation to Queen's music!
The part where Mitch is laying on the couch is in reference to Freddie's death and the members walking alongside are his coffin's Pallbearers. A lot of the visuals in here are in tribute to the original video's trippy graphics; like when they all line up and do the 'oh, oh, oh's' one after the other, and also when they line up behind Kirstie standing on the couch only to fan out behind her with their vocal parts.
The shot of the sky is in tribute to Dr. Brian May who is Queen's lead guitarist and also an astrophysicist! Each shooting star represents a member of Queen. When they all collapse onto the couch with the shot from above is a homage to the cover art of Queen's record 'Sheer Heart Attack'
Also I am pretty sure, Mitch is a reincarnation of Freddie Mercury - one...he can grow the Freddie Stash and looks so much like Freddie that it is amazing the resemblance - two...he can sing just as high if not higher than Freddie could - and three...Freddie died 8 months before Mitch was born!

    • @anglstampr1
      @anglstampr1 7 месяцев назад

Alien unicorns... to be specific... they each have several registers they can sing to cover other parts while someone else does lead solo parts... also, Mitch (has lost and gained weight throughout their history) and Kirstie change hair and clothing styles and makeup drastically, so much so sometimes you may think they are other people in the group... nope they changed their hair or makeup/mustache etcetera... the only change in the group is Avi (very deep bass) with long hair and beard (some say he looks like Jesus) Left in 2017 and Matt joined the group not long afterwards he is the youngest member and newest bass (the sound of silence) guy on the left with the buttery smooth voice...
Also... Kevin the beatboxer is married and has a daughter, Kirstie is engaged and has a daughter, Matt is married and is expecting a daughter, and Scott is recently married. Mitch has been seeing a gentleman he met on tour overseas (Italy or France I can't remember)
They have won 3 grammy's and been nominated 4 or 5 (I can't remember) times. I feel like they should have won a grammy for Amazing Grace and a couple others, but alas they did not. They have a star on the walk of fame they received last year.

  • @hawkeyescoffee6399
    @hawkeyescoffee6399 5 месяцев назад +1

I love seeing new people discover this band of superhuman vocalists lol. Especially with Mitch and his "electric guitar", he has a talent for mimicking sounds. I'm sure many others have pointed it out, but I will chime in, too, that there has only been 1 change to the group line up, when Avi (with the beard) left in 2017, he was replaced by Matt (who was in Sound of Silence) a few months later. Mitch & Kirsten may frequently change their looks but it is always still them. Lol.
For something more subdued, perhaps check out: My Heart With You, Can't Help Falling In Love (if you like a little Elvis), or their original Run To You (nevermind, I just saw you already have reacted to this one lol). I think all 3 of those are 5-part harmony, the first is Matt as bass, the other two are with Avi.
Yes, he was making those wind sounds, lol: I believe Avi (with the beard) does them at the start and Kevin does it at the end. There is indeed a lot going on in this one, but the original definitely did too, I agree. It took PTX a long time to perfect an arrangement and have the confidence to record it, I can unspderstand why, they are big shoes to fill. Freddie allegedly told his lawyer, not long before he passed, "do what you want with my music, just don't make it boring". We only have the lawyer's wird for it, but it does kinda sound like something he would have said. And well, if he did, then I would say that this version of Bohemian Rhapsody qualifies as "not making it boring" for sure.

I just realized that some of my earlier comments reference things that happened in the early days of Pentatonix, which you likely don't know about. So here is how Pentatonix began:
Kirstin, Mitch, and Scott all grew up in Arlington, Texas. All of them were involved with community musical theater as children, and Mitch met both Scott and Kirstin there (separately) when he was still a pre-teen, and became friends with each of them. However, Scott and Kirstin didn't meet each other until they were fourteen and in the same high school class. All three were choir geeks (duh), and they quickly became best friends in high school. And if you're wondering what was in the water in Arlington in the early 1990s that three such remarkably talented people should all be born in such proximity, you aren't the only one.
There was some kind of singing contest to meet the stars of _"Glee,"_ and the three of them wanted to enter, so they formed a trio which they named "The Trio." (I know; not very imaginative. They're somewhat better with that now.) They lost the contest, but they kept The Trio together anyway; they performed at school functions and occasionally on local television. Pentaholics still refer to these three as "the trio," and the trio is the heart of Pentatonix.
Kirstin and Scott were a year ahead of Mitch; they graduated in 2010, when Mitch was still in eleventh grade, and both went away for their freshman year of college. Kirstin went to the University of Oklahoma (with a full ride scholarship!), and Scott went to the University of Southern Califonia.
Scott is a very outgoing person, so he immediately began looking around for extracurricular activities where he could meet people and make new friends, and he found an award-winning amateur a cappella group named SoCal VoCals, which he joined. While there he met a former member named Ben Bram, who at the time was a coach on NBC's a cappella competition show named _"The Sing-Off."_ A cappella groups would audition for the show, and those that passed appeared throughout the season. There was a panel of three judges, all professional musicians, who would critique each performance. Along the way some groups would be eliminated, narrowing the field, and at the end of the season viewers would be invited to vote on a winner. The winning group would receive $200,000 and a recording contract with Epic, a minor subsidiary of Sony, the show's sponsor.
Scott was intrigued. He thought The Trio could be competitive, and if they could get a recording contract they could have a career doing what they most loved, with the people they most loved. So he talked to Kirstin, who thought his idea had promise, and at the end of their first year of college the two of them headed back to Arlington to be there for Mitch's graduation and to talk with Mitch about Scott's idea.
Meanwhile, back in Arlington Mitch had been having a very difficult year. His best friends weren't there, and as an out-of-the-closet young gay man with an unusually high voice he was being seriously bullied. And unfortunately, since the bullying was ostensibly for his voice he was quickly developing the notion that there was something wrong with his voice and that no one would want to hear him sing. So when Scott presented his idea Mitch was on board; it was a way to get away from the bullies. He had doubts about his ability to carry his weight in the group, because of the bullying, but he was willing to try, and if Scott and Kirstin said they could win, well, maybe they could.
So with everyone agreed, Scott called Ben Bram to find out how to arrange for an audition, and this is where they met their first setback. _"The Sing-Off"_ had a size requirement; the minimum size allowed was five. The Trio needed two new members and a new name. They were stumped.
Ben suggested that they'd profit from adding a rhythm section: a bass and a beatboxer, and he knew the perfect person to recommend for the bass, a guy named Avi Kaplan. They talked to Avi, and he was very interested, so that took care of the bass, but where to find the beatboxer? Ben didn't have any suggestions. So in desperation they typed "beatboxer" into a RUclips search box and the first hit they got was a black guy playing a classical piece on the cello and beatboxing at the same time. And all of them said, "Wow! He's the one! How can we get in touch with him?"
They were in luck. At the time RUclips had something called RUclips messages, which would allow private messages between members (now discontinued), so they sent Kevin a private message: "Hey! We really love your stuff, and we wonder if you'd be interested in flying across the country to join four strangers to audition for an a cappella competition show on television?" And Kevin messaged them back: "Normally I'd be there in a heart beat; I love a cappella and have been in a cappella groups before. But right now I'm studying for my final exams for my pre-med major from Yale." Oh. That sounded pretty definite; better keep looking. So they kept looking, and they found someone, but he was no Kevin Olusola. Oh well; you work with what you have.
And two weeks later Kevin messaged them again: "Good news! I just graduated. If the gig's still open I can fly out." He arrived the day before their audition. Mitch had to skip his graduation ceremony to attend the audition. But even with just a day of rehearsal they still passed the audition; they were in.
Oh, yes, the name. Pentatonix is named for the pentatonic scale, which has five (penta) tones just as Pentatonix has five (Penta) singers. In other words, it's a fancier way of saying they're now "The Quintet." 😂
Pentatonix appeared throughout season three of _"The Sing-Off,"_ and eventually won. All those performances are available on RUclips and are well worth watching, preferably in order so you can see how they grew throughout the season. Some of them are as good as anything they've done since (which is saying a lot) and are only available in those old videos. (Note: If you decide to react to these, be sure and watch the versions that contain the show's introduction of Pentatonix just before the performance, and the judges' critiques of the performance, and any comments Pentatonix made backstage.)
So, they'd won _"The Sing-Off,"_ complete with recording contract. Time to move to California permanently and begin recording. And a week later Epic reneged on the contract, saying that they didn't know how to market a cappella. But at this point Pentatonix weren't willing to give up; they WANTED that career they'd been working toward. So they pooled their winnings and lived frugally. The four men shared two apartments, to cut down on expenses. They arranged music and rehearsed every day, and when they had a song ready they used their iPhones to record themselves anywhere they could find good acoustics, and sometimes in places with acoustics that were just okay. And they posted to RUclips. Their fans from _"The Sing-Off"_ quickly found them there, and subscribed, and they began to get more views and more subscribers, and to pick up a few patrons. In fact, they were going viral. And Sony noticed, and approached them with an offer: Perhaps Pentatonix would like a recording contract with Madison Gate, another minor subsidiary? Hmmm. 🤔 Would they like a recording contract? Might have to think about that, for a second or two. Darn right they'd like a recording contract!
And then came "Daft Punk Medley," and Pentatonix won their first Grammy. And again, Sony took notice, and approached Pentatonix: "We've been thinking about it and we believe you might find a better fit with our flagship label, RCA. Are you interested?" They've been with RCA ever since. They go on tours world wide and perform to sold-out venues. They put out at LEAST one album a year, frequently more. One has gone Gold and one has gone Platinum twice. They have three Grammys and recently received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. And they are the only a cappella band to have won so much as ONE Grammy, or to be represented on the Walk of Fame.

When Pentatonix or PTX are sitting on the couch the main vocalist singing Freddy’s part sitting in the middle is Mitch! To his right is Scott! The lovely girl is Kirsten! They are the main vocalists of the group then sitting on the bottom to the Right is Avi their bass man & you heard correct he was making wind noises but in The Sound of Silence their bass guy is Matt! & their beatboxer sitting on the left is Kevin!! It took them 5 years to perfect this incredible arrangement! A member from QUEEN saw their performance and absolutely loved it which is pretty frickin awesome! & yes all the PTX fans are known as Pentaholics! Hope this gives you a better idea of who does what part in their A Capella group & they are currently owning the A Capella world as the most popular group and for good reason! I'm from Southern California, too! But, I live in Montana, now. You're going to get a lot of recommendations for Pentatonic standards, which are all amazing, so I'm going to recommend some things that others might not: Pentatonix - Aha!, Singapore, The Star Vista (Strange video title, I know - it's song title, country, location, but this is the video that you want. There are several different videos of them covering this song, but this is the best one, so you want to find the exact video title), their cover of Kiiara's Gold, Havana, their live Popspring performance from 2016, and Butter x Dynamite. If you want to learn a little more about them and see where they got their start, you can go all the way back the beginning to their appearance on the Sing Off, where they were basically introduced to the world. My favorite performances from that are #10 Let's Get it On, and #12 The Dog Days Are Over.

    Pentatonix a "brief" background.
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
    The founding members are:-
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);

Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”.
    Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on RUclips, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his RUclips videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on RUclips), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on RUclips, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group.
If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently.
It is an often debated subject among the Pentaholics as to just how soon we introduce the "Beginners Guide" as we don't want to overdo the introduction. This is a compilation of snips of a whole load of songs which PTX have released. It highlights each member with some of their solos and then a brief history in video. It is quite long - 14+ minutes and is a little dated now (Feb 2020) but is a good watch ruclips.net/video/lDxIfwfCmQE/видео.html&pp=ygUdYmVnaW5uZXJzIGd1aWRlIHRvIHBlbnRhdG9uaXg%3D.
After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Another nomination for Holidays Around the World album in the 2024 list!
Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET!
They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star!
They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23.
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!!
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to.
2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album.
3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.
    4. It is "Pentatonix" there is no "The".

I enjoyed your reaction and just subscribed. The look on your face when Mitch sang the guitar solo was priceless. I had to play that back. We all had the same reaction when we first heard that solo. Very creative to say the least. More subdued songs from PTX you should enjoy listening to are Imagine, Can't Help Falling In Love, and you mentioned an interest in listening to the Christmas blend of Pure Imagination/Christmas Time Is Here before your first reaction of Sound of Silence. While we all have our favorites, I haven't heard a bad upgrade (cover) or original PTX has released. Anything to pick to react to we will come along for the ride!

Great reaction! A true tribute to Queen. When they pan to the stars the four shooting stars are for the band members and for Brian May who got his degree in astrophysics. And Brian May loved this rendition. Amazing!

Hiya! Great reaction! A bit (!) of background. I love it when newbies find Pentatonix for the first time. If you do interesting Pentatonix reactions, the Pentaholics will come, I assure you.
I have been a fan since Pentatonix first formed in 2011 when they won the third season of the Sing Off. I only got to see them live for the first time though last year in London in May. I'm 54 and I sing in several choirs and do some solo stuff. I've been going to see live music for nearly 40 years and their concert was easily the best I've ever been too. They were phenomenal! I loved that there were people of all ages there from small children to people in their 80s. They are so good and they cover such a wide range of different music styles that there really is something for everyone.
A bit (!) of background. Kirstin (Kirstie - rhymes with thirsty!), Mitch (dark haired counter tenor) and Scott (tall, blonde baritone) have known each other since they were children - Kirstie and Mitch and Mitch and Scott since they were 8 and performing in community theatre together and Kirstie and Scott since high school. They sang in high school as a trio together where they grew up in Arlington Texas and have been best friends ever since. They are incredibly close which personally I think is a major ingredient of the Pentatonix magic!
They needed at least five members to enter the Sing-off competition in 2011. They found Avi, their bass singer (with the beard on this one) through a friend of a friend and Kevin, their beatboxer (who also plays cello and sings - he is a tenor) on RUclips where a video of him 'cello-boxing' - i.e. playing the cello and beatboxing had gone viral. Scott, Mitch and Kirstie were all 19 at the time, Kevin and Avi were 23.
They won the competition and the prize was a Sony record contract, however Sony dropped them after two weeks because they didn't think a cappella music would be marketable! PTX decided to go it alone. They started a RUclips channel and began to make their own music. Everything on their channel was hugely successful and they quickly won their first Grammy for their Daft Punk medley. Sony soon realised their error and signed them to their prestigious RCA label. 12 years and many best-selling albums, two more Grammy's, 3 billion RUclips subscribers and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame later and they have never looked back.
They are best known for their covers (the video for their cover of Hallelujah has over 700 million RUclips views and counting!) and Christmas music but their original music is incredible and criminally under-rated! Their music influences span many different genres including: pop, rock, EDM, hip hop, rap, dance, world music, musical theatre and even a bit of country (they won their third Grammy for a collab with Dolly Parton on a cover of Jolene). Their catalogue is huge!
They have only had one member change, their bass, Avi Kaplan (with the beard here) left amicably in 2017 for personal reasons (his mum was unwell and he couldn't keep up with their hectic schedule). He has an incredible solo career now so it isn't a loss! He was replaced by Matt Sallee, who is now the youngest in the group at 29 (Kirstie and Mitch are 31, Scott is 32, Kevin is 34). Matt is different to Avi but just as good. He's now been in the group for as long as Avi was. Matt was in your Sound of Silence reaction.
They don't have a lead singer as such as they alternate the lead according to who is most appropriate for each song. Scott probably has more leads than the others though, closely followed by Mitch, Kirstie, Matt and Kevin in that order. Kevin gets to sing solo bits less frequently (about 10% of the time) as he is needed for the beatboxing!
They are all multi-talented (Kevin most of all as he beatboxes, sings, plays the cello, saxophone and piano, was pre-med at Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin!). They can all rap, especially Mitch and Scott, and they have all been involved in writing some of their original songs. They are mostly a cappella except when Kevin plays the cello, or when they collab with the violinist Lindsey Stirling. They NEVER do anything in the studio that they can't replicate live so, for example, Mitch does the guitar solo from Bohemian Rhapsody with his mouth on stage (the megaphone was just a prop for the video!)
They all have five to six-octave ranges and Scott takes over the bass line when Avi, and now Matt, have solos, but can also sing really high. As a counter tenor, Mitch, and actually Kevin too, can sing as high, or sometimes even higher than Kirstie, who is a Mezzo soprano. Even Matt can sing very high.
I love them all for different reasons but Mitch is my favourite. His voice is once in a generation and it moves me so much. Lots of people say Dimash is the best singer in the world and technically he is phenomenal but his voice doesn't move me like Mitch's does. I'll be looking out for your first 'Mitch slap' - it's what we call it when people are gobsmacked by the beauty of his piercing, angelic voice! You'll probably get it in Hallelujah and definitely in The Prayer.
As a Pentatonix newbie, I always recommend Hallelujah, Daft Punk and Bohemian Rhapsody! After that, it's really a matter of what your particular musical interests are. I've yet to hear any of their songs that I don't like. We say they don't do covers, they do 'upgrades'. My favourites of their originals are Love again, Sing, Run to you, Happy now, Can't sleep love, I Rise, Cracked and Water. For Kirstie leads - Say something, Rather be, Water (original), 'Be my eyes' (original) and 'Shallow' are the ones that come to mind.
I've subscribed for more PTX reactions. Enjoy the rabbit hole!

Pentatonix History…..composed by Alan Freeman updated by Perry Stevenson
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
    The founding members are:-
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
    Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an acappella group could sell records.
After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
The 3 Grammys they’ve won include….(1)Daft Punk for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella……(2)Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella….(3) Jolene w/Dolly Parton for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.
They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album “Evergreen” for Best Traditional Vocal Album. They were also nominated for a 5th Grammy award for their album “Holidays Around The World” for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only acapella group with a star!
UPDATE: Pentatonix has also done 9 intros for Thursday Night Football based on their original song “sing”. Links for 3 of them are ruclips.net/video/HrruJptmbKU/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/zTUSB4iwTII/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/e2pvITc9a3U/видео.html
UPDATE: Pentatonix has done a cameo appearance in the new movie “Candy Cane Lane” starring Eddie Murphy. They are the carolers.
UPDATE: Pentatonix sang the National Anthem at the 2023 College Football National Championship game. Link is ruclips.net/video/fqWY2EUGlgk/видео.html
UPDATE: They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23.
Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET!
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong “Pentaholics” will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha Ha!!
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used auto-tune as an effect - so they had to.
2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album.
3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.
