BTW, You have some of the best ‘thumbnails.’ I really like the simplicity of the subject, and the framing on the left. That’s just my opinion 😊
Thank you! Thumbnails are hard to do so I appreciate the positive feedback. :-)
@@jbairdexp You're Welcome and cheers :-)
I do us a tripod and its case, saves damage on tripod and the boot of my car. To have the right size bag is also inportant to me, with no extra cost afterwards. looks a good bit of kit if you don't shoot downwards . Thanks for working in the cold for a great video.
How bad is your driving Mark?! lol Just joking. A few people have already said they use one for transport. Thanks for watching. :-)
Interesting piece of kit pal !! I like the leveling base but the restrictions might be a challenge !! Superb production too
Cheers buddy. The restrictions are really only a problem when you use that light weight RB-40 head. It will be rather useful when you use it with a geared head or ball head. But I don't expect you to give up your Gitzo anytime soon!
I use a tripod bag for storage and travel in my car to protect it and the head. As i use a Gitzo and an Arca Swiss D4, i am not about to let close to £2k worth of equipment just roll about in the boot. 🙂
That is a nice tripod setup for sure! I guess because my tripod is firmly attached to my camera bag I haven't considered using a separate tripod bag to use for transportation.
Exactly! Good point! 👍
I have a similar setup, a leveling base with a lever clamp that allows me to attach a gimbal or ball head. I never thought about using it without either one. It could come in handy in a pinch. You looked so cold, happy you returned home to do a wrap up. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers Glen, thank you for watching as always. It probably didn't look that cold on camera, but I was certainly feeling the cold! :-)
Hi Julian, I have this exact combination and I am delighted with it. Being disabled weight is a big issue for me and anything that enables me to reduce weight is good in my book, although the tripod is heavier than some it makes up for it in its sturdiness. I also find the levelling base really useful as I do not have full feeling in my hands and the knob on the bottom of the base is extremely easy for me to grip and manipulate the base - much easier than trying to level a ball head, which I find tends to go all over the place as I just can't seem to control the movement. I do also have a Kingjoy ball head for those rare occasions when I want to point the camera directly at the ground but they are few and far between. The C85 is a really sturdy tripod and in my opinion this combination is well worth the money. As for the bag, it went straight in the box and into storage for if I should ever decide to sell the tripod. By the way my levelling base does not squeak!!
Great to hear from a fellow C85 owner. Interesting to read how it has helped you with your photography as well. Good point on keeping the bag for selling later on. As always, thank you for watching! :-)
Really good video Julian. The final thoughts section helped me to decide. Now that I’m out on the moor, more often, I totally understand the issues around vertical adjustment. For me, I will hold fire at this stage. Hope you’re well.
Thanks Dave! The vertical adjustment is only an issue if you use the tripod with the compact head. If you use it with a ball head or geared head it won't be an issue. Thanks for watching and thanks, all good with me. :-)
Hi Julian, I also have the Kingjoy C85 & RB-40 head and I am very happy with this combination.
Hey John, nice to hear from a fellow C85 & RB-40 owner! Happy shooting. :-)
I’ll be purchasing this tripod soon. Recently on a trip to Skye, I was at Elgol and was using my very lightweight Feisol tripod which weighs 1KG without the ball head. I’ve had it some time and love it as it is so light and great for carrying up hills. While at Elgol, I was getting something out of my camera bag when a gust of wind blew the tripod and camera over. I was lucky because the L bracket took most of the impact and I got away with a few scratches on the back of the camera body. I usually weigh my tripod down but didn’t on this occasion. My mate has the Kingjoy A86 and loves it and I was very impressed with his so I’ll be purchasing the C85 soon - can’t wait. Thanks for posting Julian and you have confirmed I’m making the right choice. One question, what is the diameter of the thinnest leg please?
Hey, so sorry to hear about your accident with your gear. I've had a similar incident myself and I know how painful it can be (emotionally and financially!). I think you'll be happy with the C85 as it will give you more stability. According to the Kingjoy website the diameter of the thinnest leg is 22.4mm. :-)
@@jbairdexp Thanks for the confirmation on the thickness of the legs. They will be thicker than my current model so pleased with that. Re the cameras accident, I was only looking at my camera of 5 years just before I left for Skye thinking it looked mint. Won't do that again ;-).
Absolutely use a tripod bag for transport and storing. Appreciate not having to order one to specs and hoping it works.
That's a fair point. My tripod is attached to my bag for transport so that's why I haven't considered using a separate bag. My tripod bag is still going to end up in landfill though, so it still seems a waste.
@@jbairdexp Julian my good man, why toss it in the landfill? Give it away, sell it, etc. That makes little sense? I’m sure You don't have it anymore, so my comment is both late and likely academic. Cheers
@@georgedavall9449 I couldn't even give it away as I don't know anyone that uses them, and no one will buy one...well, at least not at a price that would make the faff of selling it worth it. 🙂
@@jbairdexpHey, thanks for the replies! Oh, and ok ok I get it, You DO NOT LIKE the bags! 😆 all good points, and like we both agreed on, its all subjective, just look at some of your viewers in the comments that use the bags. At the end of the day, it is a tool, and taking care of the actual photo equipment (camera/ lenses ) is paramount. Stay safe and cheers! 👍😊
A bowl head tripod with a ball head is a great combo for most things including Pano's, where the bowl head tripod comes into its own. At present I have a 5 series Gitzo which is massive and heavy so this Kingjoy maybe a smaller, lighter alternative.
That's it Steve, using the C85 bowl head with a standard head would be ideal for panos. How much time do we spend trying to get things level! The C83 or C85 could be options if you are looking to go lighter (though the C83 doesn't have the levelling bowl).
Interesting video as usual Julian.
I got a bag with my trypod but like you i don't use it. I put it to the side of my bag in the boot and then i have no worries about it moving around in the book.
Nice image's as usual mate.
Thanks Tim...good to know I'm not the only one that doesn't use one. I just strap my tripod to the side of my bag. And besides, tripods are pretty robust. :-)
Late comment, as I just came upon your Video, researching clamping plates, leveling heads, etc…
Interesting video, and it looks to be a solid ‘option’ as You say. I think most Photographers are split
on the use of this style of leveling base, VS leveling from the top? And there are so many options. It would seem Photographers today are in a rush, and just need to slow their pace, and take time in the process of making their images.
I must say, @ 03:34 why would You prefer to pay extra for a bag, when a manufacturer supplies one? I get it with the plastic and Environmental concerns; They are all good Points. I will echo some of the other comments in here, it comes in handy for storage, and transport in a vehicle. Out in the field, one would normally be either carrying it, or have it attached to the backpack. But they do have their place, and of course it comes down to individual preferences. ‘Horses for Courses’. 😉
Beautiful images, and You really are ‘working’ those Z7 files, @ f/13.0, and dancing on the edge of diffraction! 😯 😆
Jolly good Mate! Cheers from ‘across the pond!’ 👍📷🇺🇸😊
Thanks for watching, a late comment is still a comment worth reading! :-) On the topic of tripod bags, I just don't use them. I'm careful with my tripods, but not precious with them so I don't feel the need to have them in a bag, even in the car. They are normally attached to the side of my camera bag so they won't move about. But as you say, it comes down to individual preferences.
Oh, the Z mount lenses suffer from a lot less diffraction so f/13 isn't a concern (generally). :-)
@@jbairdexp Point taken, but I personally wouldn’t push it past f/13.0? But You did manage some awesome photos, and I do appreciate the replies and good discourse! Cheers!
@@georgedavall9449 I rarely see the need to push past f/13...the only time I do is when I want a sun burst (but that is rare). I'll focus stack if I absolutely have to. And I appreciate the good discourse as well! 🙂
@@jbairdexp Oh snap, as they say, of course for a good sun burst!
As a helpful and important tip for those out there in RUclips land: Be careful with the Mirrorless cameras, and pointing towards/ into the Sun! There is a big risk to One’s eyes as well as camera sensor. I’m sure Julian is already aware of this. Stay safe and Happy Shooting! 👍
Acratech makes an unusual head that looks very light and negates the limitations of the movement you’ve found. Think I’ve seen Thomas Heaton using one a couple of years ago.
The head that TH uses is rather nice, it's also rather expensive! :-) The point being with this tripod is that you don''t need to carry an additional head, but it comes with limitations. Thanks for watching. :-)
Hi Julian: This tripod certainly looks sturdy and I like the general appearance of their product line-up. I only wish that there was a Canadian distributor or retail so you could feel the product before buying. Keep well....Keith
Hey Keith. I'll ask the UK team to see if they know if there is one. Thanks as always for watching. :-)
@@jbairdexp Thanks Julian. That would be very thoughtful of you. Cheers, Keith
Hi Julian. I was hoping someone would post a review of the Kingjoy C85 so a huge thank you from me. This set up looks ideal for astrophotography panoramas and if used in conjunction with a geared head above the bowl would allow for tracked panos. Really impressed with the specs that you covered so well here. Looks a decent price as well. I'd prefer to get my hands on one first though and I can't find a list of dealers so I'll probably wait until the Photography Show before committing. It would be great if you could do a follow up at some point to cover longevity, robustness etc plus some thoughts after continued use. Not sure it will replace your Gitzo but it definitely looks like a very good second tripod. Many thanks for sharing. P.S. Totally agree with your view on tripod cases. I've never used any of mine and probably never will tbh.
No worries Tim, glad you found it useful. If you wait to the Photography Show, Kingjoy UK share a stand with Kase Filters UK, so you'll be able to get your hands on one then. For me, the C85 will probably replace my Gitzo as my daily driver for stills, but the Gitzo will continue to get used for filming, or when I need to go a bit lighter. Nice to hear from another person who doesn't use a case....my first bunch of comments were all from people who use tripod bags and I thought I might be the only one! thanks for watching as always. :-)
@@jbairdexp I'm guessing a C83 with the levelling base would be a big seller Julian. Perhaps you could feed that back to them sometime? Keep up the good work buddy.
@@timscanlanphotography I'll be sure to mention it! :-)
would love to have one for my iceland and other trips but its out of my price class.
Iceland...how exciting!!! You'll have a great time whatever tripod you have. :-)
Great review, I have an iFootage fastbowl which I love but find that the leg locks keep getting caught in the bag straps, the C85 looks like a great alternative with the twist locks. I know you say you don't really use the leveling plate but does it still squeak after 8 months ? Thank you.
Thanks Rob, I hadn't moved the levelling plate in some time, but I gave it a go this morning and no squeak! Not sure if it's a temperature related issue though.
@@jbairdexp Thanks for testing for me, hoping for a black friday deal on it so I can then purchase it :)
Hello, I realise you made this video a while back now, I just wondered if the tripod is still working okay? I have tried to purchase one the same as the one you used, however, it seems that configuration isn’t available. I have heads that I use with 100mm and 75mm bowls, I just wanted a third to leave the others setup ready.
Can you offer any help? Thanks……….. great sight! TonyH
Hey Tony, yes the C85 continues to work just fine! If you are looking for one with the bowl though I might be able to help you with that. Drop me a line using here - julianbaird.com/hello

fast forward 6 months - how is the reliability? im a gitzo user but intregued by this model.
No problems. It's been my main tripod since I got it and I don't have any complaints. I don't use the levelling plate though - still prefer to use my geared head. :-)
@@jbairdexp Thanks Julian!
I find tripod bags are dust collectors. I keep my tripod on the side of my bag. It is just too heavy for me sadly. Hope you had a good time photographing with your friend & taught him how to take landscape picture's on Dartmoor. Thank you.
That's where I keep mine. Yeah, it is a heavy tripod, but that also adds stability. There's always a compromise to be made somewhere! :-)
I quite like a bag with my tripod. Recently on a trip to Skye as part of a large group, our tripods were under the rear seats of the minibus. My bag opened at the end as the Kingjoy does and I kept the bag with the end open under the seat and slid my tripod and walking poles in and out of the bag when taking them out and putting them away - it kept the tripod from being scratched etc., and it also stood out from the rest. As in an earlier comment above, I will be shortly buying this tripod and I was wondering, if you are not using the bowl, do you unscrew it and fit a flat plate that sits flush with the top of the tripod? The reason why I’m asking is that I’ve seen different images where the plate is either flush with the top of the tripod or it is sitting proud as in your video.
