  • [CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of body image/dysmorphia & sexual assault]
    Are steroids/PEDs used by some of our favorite Hollywood stars to attain their drastic body transformations? Is even asking that question overlooking the deeper problem when it comes to male body representation?
    This video will discuss Hollywood leading men undergoing body transformations, diving a bit deeper into the whole steroid controversy in relation to these transformations, and male body representation and positivity in the media in general, and discuss what I would argue is a growing problem in the industry that isn’t being talked about.

      for some scenes they also have to seriously dehydrate themselves in addition to staying fit and cutting all fat off to get that shredded look. Look up candid photos after shooting and their abs and pecs mostly disappear along with the shredded muscles because it's completely unsustainable. Hugh Jackman once said he needed to spend a couple days preparing for shirtless scenes to dehydrate himself for that cut look, then he'd be so weak and burned out he'd need time after to recover and that's all outside of staying totally fit and eating healthy. Some stars seem to yo-yo 10, 20 pounds or even more up and down between films.

    • @bimbowithadegree420
      @bimbowithadegree420 3 года назад +411

      Basically this! The standards of masculinity imposed to men are equally damaging to their self perception and mental health as they are for women. Any intersectional feminism analysis recognises this and it should recognise that

    • @mycaleb8
      @mycaleb8 3 года назад +116

      @@bimbowithadegree420 And yet, many intersections femenist analysis still puts it as secondary. Women's issues should not be shut down, but it's not a minor issue in feminism. Musandry is massive in the movement, and too often defended by femenist the way misogyny is defended by gamers.

    • @bimbowithadegree420
      @bimbowithadegree420 3 года назад +248

      @@mycaleb8 I can't really speak for all feminists and for the misandry in the movement, I think its however important to understand that mainstream feminism is not intersectional feminism based on a q***r analysis of gender; its instead liberal feminism co opting the aesthetics of intersectionality while really just focusing on the struggles of white middle class and upper class women (what I mean by mainstream is the buzzfeed type, pop feminism and the major liberal institutions) and that has been an issue within feminist movements from the get go (back in the suffrage stage, black women were often left out of feminist spaces and working class women as well, for example).
      This is why we should understand that first and foremost feminism is a theoretical lense, and that there isn't a single feminism, there's feminisms. Each branch varied and taking its own approach, however to me what is more convincing and more prepared to deal with gender systems and concern itself with everyone who it harms, is intersectional feminism based on a qu**r lense. This is because it looks at how we have constructed gender roles and expectations and how it has harmed everyone involved even if in different ways, or if originally meant to aid them. It looks at the way men are seen as less than men if they are raped and often are ridiculed and not taken seriously when it does happen; but it also looks at how women are often targets of harassment at work and the constant enlargement of their bodily rights. It looks at how gay men are ridiculed for being less as not living up to masculinity since they are associated with the feminine; but also how lesbian women are seen as lesser women because they are not often interested or attracted to pursuing ideals of feminity; it also validates trans struggles by understanding how much of what we are expected to do within society- ie the definition of gender- are socially and narrowly constructed standards.
      It cares about everyone, it understands the need to make gender constructions something that helps everyone.
      I am not gonna tell you there aren't issues with the modern mainstream feminist movement, coming from a leftist lense- yes there are, but where I am coming from I can't answer for that, what I can do, and what I have seen happen more in the last two years, is push back from this status quo, neo liberal form of feminist activism and advocacy, to a model that more closely aligns with my values 😀 I would recommend you look into Judith Butler and other qu**r feminist theorists they helped me imensly undertand all I do now 😀

He knows a guy in his twenties who has to see a doctor weekly because his liver is so screwed up from all the stuff he uses. The effect of what’s happening in Hollywood is so clear to see; when you’re at the gym and you see guys who use, or guys talking about how they work out three times a day, or guys eating a thousand calories below maintenance for a cut, you know it’s a problem. I think one of the worst things about it is that this growing lifestyle brand is built on the idea that these are physiques which represent fitness and strength. If you want to be fit and strong, you have to look like this, and if you don't, you're not. Except that's nonsense. We've just had the London Marathon - the ability to run a marathon is an indicator of a very high level of physical fitness. Did any of them look like a Holywood star? Nope. Could any of them have run the marathon after fasting and dehydrating themselves for three days? No, they would have passed out before the first mile marker. But around the world guys who can lift over a hundred kilos, or run marathons, are looking at their fairly shapeless, squidgy bodies and wondering why they don't look like the celebs. Simply, because it's an utter fantasy. But this seems to be the goal of just about anyone who decides to 'get in shape', and so they can never be satisfied with the genuine progress they make.

If you can do both and are pretty lean you're gonna look good it's just physically hard not to. Men use to try to “expand”their ribcages with certain exercises and stretches. I think it’s because it’s the opposite of most womens ribcages. My point is he has an unusual skeleton shape in general, and would like that even if he were ripped. The first I thought when I saw him is that he has really odd skeletal proportions, which is a weird thought, but somehow almost everyone else thought so to. I never thought he needed to be leaner. it's human nature. For much of western civilizations history people compared themselves to greek and roman statues trying to get that look, Hercules especially was so popular his statues were often the benchmark for physical fitness even though he was a super humanly strong half god. Other cultures had similar such as the Hawaiians striving to pick up the Naha stone which weighed 5000 pounds, Vikings trying to carry the 410lb Húsafell Stone, and there are similar legendary stones elsewhere (there's tons of legendary "lifting stones"). Some polytheistic cultures similar to the Greeks and Romans would try to emulate gods or legendary heroes, or even athletes of their time like some who tried to get physiques like the gladiators and countless people tried to emulate their cultures greatest warriors. It's all pretty similar to today where you've got people emulating actors and athletes, and snake oil like elixirs stretch back to some of our earliest written records.

      Firstly - If all it takes to get your precious “respect” (whatever that even is) is for someone to be honest, then it’s not really worth worth much, is it?
      Furthermore - there’s a big difference to Arnold admitting using steroids back when nobody knew or cared what they were, versus someone in the public eye in 2021 who is claiming to have achieved a superhero level physique naturally, who’s entire career hinges on it.
      Lastly - Arnold bulls**tted the media when he “admitted” to steroids. He tried to play dumb and said they were new, he didn’t know what they were, yet also claimed he did it under doctor supervision. He politically manoeuvred his way out of the question, and that was almost 20 years ago.

      I think it's a concern when actors are supposed to be playing average dudes and not superheroes or secret agents and are still ripped as hell. Not saying it's impossible but if you take say, Eddie Brock in Venom, who is supposed to be a poor photographer who is barely scraping by but still has a ridiculously ripped physique even before the Symbiote attaches to him or you get someone who is supposed to be playing an overworked dad in a dead end job who clearly has no time to work out and is somehow still jacked it seems jarring.

    Its hard to watch all these guys who have body dysmorphia bandaid their issues by diving head first into restrictive gym schedules and diets. it doesn't address core issues they have regarding self esteem and instead further contributes to high levels of stress they feel towards their own bodies.

      It’s hard to spot when it becomes unhealthy because the act of working out, in and of itself, is great for your mental health in many ways.
      Sometimes underlying issues can be concealed like loneliness, unworthiness, and sometimes a need for attention.
      It does vary from person to person so I can’t stand when ignorant people paint ALL gym-goers with a broad brush.
      I think having clear, measurable and realistic goals tends to ground people and remind them why they’re in there. Keeps ‘em focused, and helps reduce any anxiety. Better to focus on “right m, I’m gonna lift this!” instead of “Christ, I look like an absolute muppet in here”.

    Back when I trained for 6 months in the bush, I got ripped but literally only gained 1 kg. I was averaging 5 hr a half-day training schedule and 3 days of the week I was in some sort of outdoors training with heavy backpacks, it was intense, and I was exhausted every day. There is no limit on milk and bread and the food was well-made and all you can eat, I believe I was taking at least around 2-3 times the caloric intake than normal. Maybe I wasn't doing things optimally in a gym, but I am damn sure how hard it is to gain weight, and it never correlates to how hard you trained.
    PS: I heard that people who were on an intense steroids cycle were gaining like 10 kg per cycle (3 months or less), compared to that I gained like 15 kg during my intermediate and high school growth, that is 7 years in my country. The mate actually show me pictures of their balls, it is like the size of an olive, though the mate understood the implications before his cycle and did not regret it after because he was bullied badly for being skinny.

      Partly because there are different types of functional fitness depending on what you are trying to get your body to do. At the top of their games a heavyweight boxer looks very different to a Kung Fu black belt who looks very different to an Olympic sprinter who is different again to a pro cyclist. Even within cycling you can often tell the difference between a circle track sprinter and a Tour de France pro.
      Meanwhile Hollywood has slowly been making everyone look like a bodybuilder, which often translates to low functional fitness because you're carrying around too much muscle in places that impede flexibility or running and make you tired faster. I appreciate not having a completely jacked Batman because while yes, he's supposed to be big, he's also supposed to be able to run around on rooftops for hours and be so stealthy he can sneak up on ninjas while clinging to ceiling beams.
      I like rock climbing and it's always fun being in the climbing gym with weights gym junkies who struggle to finish a single climb without being too exhausted while my semi-fit ass keeps going, partly because of technique, and partly because I'm not lifting up muscles that are stopping me from getting my full range of motion from extended to tightly crouched.

The problem, imho, is 100% on the health level: the side effects are there, are serious, and frequent enough that it is not simply a vague warning. Honestly, if it was not for the health risk, a lot of people - me included - would take drugs and get much easier results. My ex is an actor with a pretty regular slim not too buff physique. He had to get ripped for a 30 second shirtless scene, and for that had to embark on a ridiculous work out schedule. He ate only chicken breast and salad for months, and got a Trainer to get him shaped up with an absolutely insane routine (it seemed like that to me.). Needless to say, it payed off and he gained that Hollywood body, 8 pack and all.
    Once that scene was done and no more reshoots, he almost cried with relief when could eat cake. Didn't take long for him to look just as he did before.

    What I think should be mentioned as well, is that even the actors that have been in contrast to the fit Hollywood body image eventually conform to it as well. Taking Paul rudd and Chris Pratt as an example, they showed a relaxed/normal body image for a long part in their careers, but once big leading roles were on the table they got ripped as well. It seems like while you can make it to a certain level, eventually you have to conform to that body image.
