Just another day at the office...
Explaining would have left him vulnerable. Appearing vulnerable for allowing his emotions to drive his decision making and being vulnerable to any number of scenarios - a la a wiretap.
Personally, I think he's just that careful and intentional out of instinct and habit, both of which kept him alive in a business filled to the brim with far worse and far more powerful than him.
If I was in Jesses or Walters position I would’ve been sh!tting bricks honestly
I really love how even Mike points the gun at Gus because of how shocked he is
Yup. He's the only one in the room ready to protect himself. Shocked but his instincts kicked in immediately.
>in the lab
>he Points to Shoot

Muscle memory. Bravo Vince
Not just muscle memory. It communicates to the viewer, that this is behavior Mike would not be used to by Gus, so we are in an extreme situation, and also that Mike is not "protected". If Gus really wanted, he'd kill all of them. Good characterization !
Gus stares at Walt, who is shrinking and cringing and gagging. Then he stares at Jesse, who grits his teeth and leans forward, not breaking eye contact. We can, barely, see Gus registering the difference.
Giancarlo Esposito should be in *everything*.
We've reached the first appearance of Huel and "THEY'RE MINERALS, MARIE"
How did I forget about Huel!?

No Arianna, not rocks, they're MINERALS ! :P
I was just about to take a drink when Arianna said "he's buying ROCKS". I narrowly avoided getting water all over my laptop screen there 🤣
One of the best parts of S4 is how they weave Gus from an already amazing character into one of TV's greatest antagonists ever.
But you also get a great glimpse of how he is the protagonist of his own story
Buying rocks? They are minerals!
I'm a geologist. They are minerals, not rocks.
Christ Marie!!!
Every time I watch your intros, I can't help but hear, "Hey guys, welcome back to diet Jesus"
I hear worse so usually I try to quickly skip intro. (Not great channel name)
I’m curious what inspired the name now 🤔
@@ghandiman you can check the definition. the word (and the idea to use it as a channel name) is nice but when you say it (especially when you say the word fast)..

Meet the real Gus Fring. Even Mike was taken aback.
This episode completes the trilogy that started with Half Measure. Walt and the audience finally meet the real Gus. All of our jaws were on the floor with this one.
Aaron Paul's performance from here on out is nothing short of incredible.
Pretty sure Gus kills Victor because there were people at Gales place that could identify him. Gus is nothing but cautious.
And Victor started a cook without permission.
It needed to be done, but it needed to be done that way to send a message.
Gus was right, somewhere in season 5 we can see a wanted sketch of Victor in the DEA office I think.
I think that's part of it. But also Walt's arguments were correct: Gus wanted to get rid of them and they were never just going to let that happen. You can't blame someone you're trying to murder to make a countermove. However, it was Victor's job to prevent Walt and Jesse from being able to do that, and he failed.
@@CynicaykeI think that explanation was just Walt's ego.
Singing Outkast during a dramatic scene threw me off and had me laughing. “Lend me some crystal, I am your neighbor” 🤣
I had no idea what song that was but I was screaming at them through my TV to stop and pay attention.
That was hilarious 😂😂
THEY'RE MINERALS
Ever notice how whenever you have one of those days where your boss makes you dissolve the body of a guy he killed in a barrel and mop up the bloody mess on the floor, you always wind up eating at Denny's afterward?
Yup. And when your boss makes you dismember the body and dump it from your boat, you always wind up eating pulled-pork sandwiches?
I mean waffle house is just going to give you another body
I like that you’re paying close attention to things like lighting and color. It was probably my second time through the series that I started to really take that stuff in, and the experience of watching the show becomes all the richer for it. Somewhere on the internet (probably just a Google search away) is a color chart for each of the main characters’ wardrobes, which includes a timeline, and notation of significant events. You can actually watch each of them get darker over time, or switch back to lighter based on relative morality. Even Marie has a few notable changes in her otherwise uniformly purple wardrobe. NOTE: the chart runs through season 5, so it’s safe to look at spoiler-wise before you start Season 6.
I live in a truck stop town, and we have two Denny's literally across the street from each other.
the cut from victor's blood to the ketchup on the plate is so good
Blood to pasta sauce would have been good, too.
We've all had bad days at work, but have you either had a "Your boss comes in, murders your manager, and you have to go back to work after making the body disappear" type of bad days at work?
We are in the Mineral Era now people.
Victor was seen *and* was touching the meth making equipment without authorization.
Fun fact: the actor who plays Victor, Jeremiah Bitsui, played Eagle Flies in the video game, Red Dead Redemption II.
cool! I didn't know that.. Awesome
Hole-E shit I hear it now
The scene at Dennys seemed kind of like an homage to pulp fiction
It’s the one that says bad notherfucker
Poor Jessie committing a murder and watching a murder in one night that's two murders for him and one night he is hella traumatized not to mention they had to dissolve one in the asset again I think by the end of it he just went completely numb
Ah yes, the origin of the "Jesse, what the fuck are you talking about?" meme! lol
The disappearing a body in the barrel is the single most freighting & realistic aspect of the show.
Without a body it’s virtually impossible to convict someone with a decent lawyer. The idea we could just be wiped off the face of the earth that effectively is horrifying.
Just don't get caught on the Home Depot check out cams buying said 55 gallon drum and dissolving chemicals.
Did you hear about the time someone sued Pepsi Co because they claimed they found a dead mouse in their Mountain Dew? The actual argument Pepsi Co put forth was that this was IMPOSSIBLE, because by the time that can of Dew was purchased the corrosive slurry that is Mountain Dew would have entirely dissolved any dead mouse into "jelly". Google it, the story is wild.
@@scottschofield5000 did Walter teach you nothing?
Separate stores, cash only. 😆
Its not great for insurance/benefits for the family either. They don't like to pay without a corpse.
I went on a road trip to Vegas from Kansas City last fall, and I love stopping at Denny's on road trips, so I would use my car's infotainment system to find them. But it was out of date, and on three different occasions I tried to go to a Denny's that was gone, it was very sad seeing the shells of the old Denny's signs and the empty buildings.
Something i also have seen people say, which i agree, is that Gus message here was alzl "oh, you think because i critically need you this will keep you alive? Mess up like this guy and this is what will happen".
Of the several episodes that marks a moment in the story, this is one of those.
😂😂😂
It was here where Gus became Heisenberg…
@@henriisgay😂😂😂 😊
Of all the episodes where something happens, this is indeed one of them.
Truly one of the episodes of all time
"Walter probably pooped his pants" 😂😂😂
The first episode of this season was one thing. The FINAL episode of this season was something else altogether. Next level badass. 100% looking forward to this season.
Something that I missed on my first few watches is that Mike drew his gun when Gus slit Victor's throat. He detected a predator and was ready to defend himself immediately.
Pretty cool little detail.
Yeah it’s a very appropriate reaction for a former cop
Walt was one domino in a chain of events that led to Gales death. He chose a life of a crime and the risks that come with it.
True he was in the game. But comparing Jesse and Walt to gale, gale deserved to live more
So... my first exposure to the actor that played Gale was from Suits and he was a real prick in that show. So seeing him get shot in another show was very cathartic for me 🤣
My first exposure to him was in Do the Right Thing, where plays the character Buggin' Out.
@@jrepka01 Gale, not Gus.
Coming back from the last commercial break AMC put a violence warning up on the screen ahead of the Victor scene.
All I know is, whatever service I used to watch this muted the "Fuck" in "Fuck you" to Gretchen, but let this scene play out in full. So that's pretty classic.
Love to see your devotion to Gus, Cannot for the reactions to the rest of the season. My mom and I didn't talk for a couple weeks after watching season 4 together back in 2012.
21:32 Giancarlo is a hunk
His name was Victor
I think when Walter saw Jesse he thought maybe he got caught too soon or Jesse didn't do it and got cold feet but then when he heard him say that he was gone he looks at Jesse with three different feelings one he can't believe he pulled through for him and two he's glad he pulled through for him and actually the third feeling is he feels bad that he had to make him do that then actually there could be a fourth feeling he got pride now knowing that they pulled it off and that Jesse will do just about anything for him so now he knows they are on the same page with saving each other's lives any kind of uses that to manipulate Jesse more
Gale got killed in self defense... because of his boss.
The "Dude Smoothie" episode. Also the most evil transition ever done 24:08
26:11 "Pookie is looking absolutely FIRE today" 💀💀💀
you're absolutely correct, Maple
We have plenty of Denny's here in Phoenix, but yes, they seem to have pulled out of Colorado Springs.
Everything from 14:05 to 14:09 "THEY ARE MINERALS"
Jesus Maple, they're minerals! 😂
This show is genius because it convinces people that Walt literally killed Jane, the Wayfarer passengers, and Gale.
Gale was just excited for the chemistry. He wanted to be perfect to appease Walt and Gus.
There's a few characters in the Breaking Bad/BCS universe that got caught in the cross fire. Gale happens to be one of them. He deserved better.
No he didn’t - he got involved with a meth cartel. He signed his own death warrant.
He cooked meth. Should have made better choices.
Same energy they have for Walt.
@@thedarkemissary Does that inherently make him a bad person? You have no idea what lead him and Gus to meet. You don’t know if he was forced into making meth or not.
All you know is that he was an excellent chemist.

The very first time I saw this episode, I was on edge and scared when that box cutter came out. Giancarlo Esposito is an incredible force and actor. It even caught Mike off guard with what Gus did, and that's raw to see Mike like that.
Vince Gilligan said in a commentary that he uses the color red to symbolize crime. So if there's a lot of red on screen, crime is prevalent. Like Jesse's red shirt he wore when he shot Gale, or the paint of the super-lab.
I have no idea what was happening when you guys were singing at the beginning. I assume this is because I am old.
They still have Denny's in the St Louis area btw.
There are multiple Denny's around me!
I think Gus was also kind of trying to show Walter and Jesse without using any words that this is what happens to someone you work with who messes up hinting to Walter that if Walter would have just killed Jesse or gotten rid of him in some way that this would not have happened but because Walt can't do that to his partner a lot of other things happened because Jesse happen to know no the girl who was related to the brother who got taken into the game and since he cares about kids he had a big problem with that and also it was his friend who got killed so he was the one who took it personally Walt could have let that one go because he didn't really know the guy so I think that was also part of the message showing how easy it is to kill one of his own and that Walter should have just done that because remember he kept saying he wanted to get rid of Jesse and that Jesse was just a junkie and that he couldn't be trusted and in some ways he can't be trusted to always make the right decisions but he can be trusted to be loyal to Waltand that's what Walter was talking about when he told us that and Gus now realizes that because he knows that Jesse was the one who took care of Gail to save Walter's life
My local Denny's is a swimmable 5,065 miles away; you'll spot some icebergs if you stuff up crossing the East Australian Current though...
23:36 Fun Science Stuff: HF (hydrofluoric acid) is actually not a very strong acid - its K value is middle to moderately strong. Hydrochloric acid (HCl,) for example, is much better at dissolving bodies than HF.
Found that out the hard way.
Don't want to know what the "hard way" to find that out is. HF is quite good at destroying bone structure as it is a calcium magnet, but you would be better off going with a strong base to get rid of organic tissue.
I think the primary reason they use HF in the show is so that they can do the dissolving tub scene in S1E2. My only question back then was, "What is a high school chem lab doing with gallons and gallons of HF on hand?"
Where can I buy a barrel? Asking for an ex-friend.
@@jrepka01 "What is a high school chem lab doing with gallons and gallons of HF on hand?" Probably the reason every high school chemistry lab in America seems to have a pound of solid sodium metal in the closet. It's just fun to play with. Plus, it removes rust pretty well when diluted. When not diluted, it also removes rust pretty well.
Thanks for the tip from a grateful ex-neighbor.
@jxchamb Check the Patrick Bateman aisle at Home Depot.
Back in the late 1960s, I had my first bacon cheeseburger at a Denny's in Solana Beach. It was something new at the time (the bacon cheeseburger, not the Denny's). Haven't been to a Denny's in a long time now. Used to go a lot back then. They were always just off the freeway, so very convenient for us travelers and we were all travelers when we were young. Learned a little about Gus this time. More to come. Love you guys. Wish you'd get into Stargate because I'd love to share it with you, the film and the series.
Funny to see an MLB ad with Bryan Cranston pop up in the middle of this.
We've still got Denny's here in Dallas!
The guy you talked about in the last RV scene with the water powered fraud who died of a heartattack due to low blood pressure and stated with his last breath that he was poisoned. His water powered car was not something revolutionary and he was called a fraud by experts who wanted to inspect the car he claimed could drive miles. But the inventor came up with a lame excuse. 2 years later he died at dinner with potential belgian investors.
Look at Maple with operational security insights!
The reason Gus killed Victor, is not cause he allowed Walt to get close to Gale, but cause Victor fkd up at crime scene and was seen by people there, so Gust took him out to prevent him getting caught , therefore saving himself from possible link with Victor. There's reason he was doing this business for years and never been caught as Saul said 'fore.
That Outkast adlib session was the best lol
if you haven't i'd definitely recommend watching the episode commentaries - make sure you've finished the whole season tho bc they'll sometimes include spoilers from later episodes. this one was really cool, and had some fun details, like: Mike pulling his gun was Jonathan Banks' choice, and Vince Gilligan (who wasn't on set) didn't think it would work until he saw it and loved it. Also Mike helping lift the barrel was real, Bryan and Aaron couldn't lift it themselves, which makes it funnier that Mike immediately turns and walks away. Also Skyler's whole thing, Gilligan said her scene at the end was kind of a contrast to when Walt went missing during his "fugue state" and she was calling every hospital and morgue in the area; now that she knows what Walt is really doing she's created some distance by necessity. Giancarlo also said he was super excited to have a scene with almost no lines - everyone was continually impressed with his physicality, and there's a later episode with a situation that Vince apparently wrote bc he had an image of Gus doing a specific action, so the episode was kind of built around that. Love fun facts
24:11 killer transition 😉
Walt asking Mike to help put Victor in the barrel was improv. Aaron and Bryan really couldn't get Jeremiah in it.
11:50 What a country to live where your first thought in this situation is "someone could steal your car and kidnap your baby". 😲
Always amazes me when people ignore the purpose of the cold open. It isn't just about following a recipe. Walt and Jesse are uniquely talented. Even a trained chemist like Gale isn't on Walt's level. Victor was arrogant and he died for it.
Dont worry about laughing in the first scene, i was just waiting for cutter-man, i was like "yea yea, keep laughin"
Haha
Victor was such a smug POS, this scene made me smile.
So annoying
MIKE was terrified. do you have any idea how insane that is? MIKE.
This is really the turning point of the whole show imo
We have been saying this for the last 14 episodes lol

I have two Denny's both like a mile from me 😂
It was all about "the sweep"
Such an ominously great start to season 4
No way could Viktor cook the same purity as Walt just by watching a few cooks. It's not just following a recipe, there is all kinds of variation and adjustments and only a chemist can control those to reach a consistently high purity. Not only that, Viktor couldn't control and maintain a lab of that calibre.
23:41 "Brought to you by Windex" 🤣 Maple cracks me up every time. She had a couple of other great ones in this reaction, as usual. Arianna too. PS: Just bingewatched all of your Succession reactions; they might be the channel's masterpiece! Both in reaction commentary and in editing! It's actually better than the series itself! I could never binge watch "Succession", one hour a week was more than enough with those characters; but filtered through Arianna and Maple, I couldn't get enough! :D

The irony that Gus had turned Walter down because of Jesse and Gail is the one who kind of wanted Walter to work for him probably because he wanted to meet the genius that could cook 99% meth so he talked him into it using his speech of wanting only the best and then it was Jesse and Walter who ended up killing him to save their own lives, poor Gail
14:06 they’re not rocks! They’re minerals Ariana 😂😂😂😂
Walt was in no position to make any demands whatsoever especially after putting himself and Jesse in this situation after making him shoot Gale. If I were there right next to him, I would’ve told him to close his goddamn mouth.
Knowing enough about Mike, it’s hard to make anything surprise him. He was clearly taken aback by Walt and Jesse knowing how to “clean the scene”. Jesse actually learned from last time something like this happened in the first season. He used the correct kind of barrel this time around.
Denny's.. Petaluma Blvd N 0.25mi west of Highway 101 Petaluma, Ca
