I bought a '72 HO block and heads (basically a renamed Boss 351) back in the late '80's. Standard bore, 4 bolt main, sonic checked for core shift. I oiled it up, wrapped in plastic and stuck it in the shed. Haven't looked at it since. The plan was to make a 393 stroker out of it. I'll have to pull it out to clean it and have another look at it. Got a Bud Moore torque box with it. Since it has a flat top plate I was going to play around and make 6v and 8v top plates. Never had the time back then. Gonna have to make time this year for it.
I’ve got 5 Cleveland standard bore blocks. I didn’t realize that two of them are GT blocks until now. Now I do have a 1971 standard bore short deck 400 Ford. I almost scraped that 400 thinking that it was your tall deck 400 when I was working at the machine shop. I really enjoy your channel along with Drag Boss’s Cleveland channel. Keep the great videos coming.
Awesome video bro 👏 there is no one as young as you with the same amount of knowledge on ford muscle cars and parts, particularly the Cleveland Engine. You never cease to amaze 🙌 "the nothing block" wow where do you get one of them 😅
Hey Clevo King, all the D blocks were cast before November 1, 1971. We have never found a D block that was cast after that date. The engineering number on the D blocks were D0AE-J, K, or L, many people hunt up the -J as they had less core shift. The square pad blocks were all D2AE and could be four bolt main but you have to pull the pan to check. Here in the states, there are still a lot of standard D blocks to be found for around $150-$400. Cheers, Bill
Hey Torino, There sure were D Blocks cast after that date but not in the USA. Ford Australia used some of your discontinued Patterns over here before they made their own hence they were D's and made later than Nov 1971.
So, I just came acros a 351c/d and the guy who sold it to me says he took it from a vahicle from the mid 70’s and I live in ‘merica…anything wrong with it???
Very cool man I pulled my Cleveland out of a comet cobra it has the X in the valley area it is a four bolt main the one I have it’s got the heavy duty rods in it I cleaned it up with all new parts and it’s been sitting for years and I want to get back at it thanks for sharing your engine if you know anything about the four bolt main Cleveland’s share that please thanks your videos are awesome
The x on the square was a quality control stamp, different guys had different letters and that was to mark off a check apparently from my research. There is an x block but it’s not the x there it’s on the block in a different spot I’ll make a video on that one day I have one.
I really need some help here. I have the square block you talked about. Code on block is doae-L and right below it is om21. My heads say 2 with the cannonball next to it. On the opposite of the square it says F like yours. What is it ?
It would just be a changeover block so doae-l is usually the d block but there was a few dozen made with the square. The boss 351 uses that exact same block but with a few unique numbers on the back of the engine behind the sandwich plate that read D1ZX
@@thclevoking The casting number is D0AE-J and date is 0A9 so it would be a fairly early block. Do you know what that extra port was used for? I'd like to hear more about the alloy sk block. Sure do injoy your videos please keep them coming!!!
@@thclevoking I've had a search all over, maybe it'll come up after a good clean, it had rumours of being a police pursuit motor an that's why it wasn't up front, but not really at the back either.
The 4MA was the first cranks usually found in D blocks, the 4MAB was just the revised version with no major differences. I will add the B does not stand for balanced like some claim it to be.
You would have to run it over emissions lab, if you are in Sydney, they have a free RMS one at Penrith. Run it on E85 or put some serious Cats on it and fuel inject it. It should pass.
Would if you could help Im trying identify if I have a 302 0r 351 cleveland its in the car the engine is painted black so very hard to see but I found a number JG45PR then 50941 k i think any help would be greatly appreciated
Check stroke by pulling plugs. Straight piece of wire to measure with. Turn engine until piston is at top of cylinder then stick wire in plug hole until it touches piston and mark wire with a texta where it lines up on plug hole. Turn engine until piston is at the bottom and stick wire in until it touches piston. Mark wire with texta where it lines up with plug hole like before. Remove wire & measure distance between to marks. 3 inches is 302 & 3.5 inches is 351.
I enjoyed your video and it fills a gap in what a lot of people ask and people that know have always been too busy or too lazy to make available. It was all good untill you said open Chamber heads on the GT. They all had closed chamber heads, that is all the XY and XA GT's. The open chambers turned up on and off the Fairlane's and LTD's. And please when you make your up and coming video for which I look forward to, do not make the mistake saying the Dot stands for open Chamber heads as It does not. But the Mystery of the Dot and the Bigger Mystery of the small and large Dot I await in anticipation. Good onya matey, keep it up.
The GT guys I asked for advice when I started finding bits to restore this engine said it would have been open chamber being an Auto and made in July. All manual cars would have had closed chamber heads through to xb. Xb auto gts had a lot of 2v heads fitted on auto cars too
A bit of old info that may interest some that don't know, Some of the public does not know there was a 9.2" deck 351 "W"indsor # XE 93532 race block made back in 1966 way before Kundsen's "C"leveland block was even on the drawing board & this 351w XE 93532 9.250" deck Windsor race block got as big a 391+ ci back in 1967 for Can-Am racing. The 302 & 351 windsor XE race blocks were tested with canted valve head prototypes in 1968 Before Kundsens new block was & there were plans WAY BACK in 1964-65 for a 9.450"+ deck 7L aluminum Windsor race eng for Can Am racing. Kundsen screwed things up at FORD with Fords 351W race block development... goo gle "351w xe block" for more info

I have the same block. Went 4.060. Just gonna be a cruiser maybe 375hp or so. Hopefully no problems!
Nicely explained. I have a 4V square block and on the square is the letter X.
What does that mean?

Hey mate have you a D Bloke you would sell ? I'm restoring an XW GT Ph2 that i want a Bloke for as it had an engine swap to a Square Bloke Guys.
So what does it mean if there's a hole with pipe threads in it on that pad between the distributor and fuel pump?
What is the casting number and date on the block where this one said DOAE-L? I have only seen that on very early early, usually the alloy SK blocks.

what is the difference between a D block, a square block and a no block
Interesting video, but with so much background noise your audio wasnt clear.
Thanks for the feedback, the Audio was pretty good in that compared to others I have made
Awesome
I have a D block late 69 build DOAE j no engine number anywhere?? Any advice
Look at the rear of the block behind cylinder 4 some were stamped there but a lot of us blocks were not stamped from that era 👌

I have a 351c D block with DOAE-J with close chamber heads was told it was a 351 boss could that be true ?
It should be DOAE-L but I’d be checking the main caps, harmonic balancer, rocker gear, and the other specific parts to see what it is exactly
id love to know the difference between 4ma and 4mab cranks? ive seen both and i have no idea what makes them different

Would this engine fit and be legal in a AU Falcon and if so what type of gearbox would go with it.
