- A lot of people get travel calls wrong, especially in the NBA, and the reason for this takes a little digging.
If you look at the rulebook you'll see that there's some details that a lot of people don't know about, and those details make a world of difference in how you see the game.

What u r doin is not a travel u make only 2 steps... But kyrie and harden that s absolutely travel...
Baby steps?
The key is "control of the ball". This makes it almost impossible to call bc the game is happening way too fast to tell at what exact point the ball has been gathered while simultaneously watching when each foot is stepping.
just count the steps after he picks up the ball. shit is easy. then if they try and argue it tell em that they took the 0 step after picking the ball up so its a travel. u can agree with em and still prove em wrong
So easy to create so called star players....
they all look like simple 1 2 step to me some how
yeah the zero step nowadays people use are more often happens at the same time player gathers the ball.
🖒
Same
Same
Same
None of the ones you did looked like travels. Clean 2 steps, then jump. If you count gather step, then it's 0,1.
He did a bunch of one step layups.
Those all look like simple 1-2 steps. Can you do a video contrasting those steps with regular 1-2 steps?
Exactly. All of those were textbook 1-2 layups.
It's so annoying when people call travelling on you in a pickup game because they think it's 2 steps per dribble
Literally just happened to me so I came here lol
So you play NBA rules in a pickup game I'm pretty sure people are in the block for more than 3 seconds to so call those two call the in the paint violation but you won't
It is.
You don’t get a 0 step in pickup games. It’s not the NBA
@@GudJonnyCakes I call 3 sec violations. Not strict about it tho because its a waste of time to have an argument EVERY GAME with casuals.
Your samples are great and are not travels, the ones Harden, Kyrie and Giannis do are though.
The examples shown were not travels, what many NBA players do is twice that.
As it stands, maybe there s/b a running back position in the NBA: run it up court, pass it to the RB and then just barrel towards the hoop without dribbling.
No they don't, you're still willfully misunderstanding the rules.
This rule was integrated in 2018 in FIBA and NBA in 2019. This was a travel in the past, but they stopped calling this from 2003-2004 when the nba was changed by gathering off the wrong foot. Please don’t pretend this was always part of NBA rules unless you suggest that everyone before 2003-2004 year just didn’t know they could take an extra step. This was considered a travel because you gather and that foot that is down was considered your pivot foot, you could lift it but you could not return it to the ground, unless you did a Hop Stop, and neither foot was a pivot foot. I am not sure if this zero step is integrated into highschool or other leagues...
It wasn't added per se more like clarified. The gather step was acceptable since the 80's (maybe even earlier) they just don't call it the "gather step" back then. I watched a lot of 80's games since my dad have a shit ton of DVD of games in that era and they don't call them travelling.
@@monkeydog8681 It was added and check the videos again. When you gathered while taking that step, that step was the first step. In fact there is none of the two step in general, you have to understand the real basketball rules still in effect around the world. When you pick up the ball that foot is your pivot foot, then if it is raised you are not allowed to establish another pivot foot you have to shoot or pass. You could gather and hop stop that was where none of the two feet when landed could be pivots. But in general you will see them gather when stepping with right foot then lift take that one more step and go up with it. That's just the way it is in real basketball.
Thank you. I wish we'd have been able to take 3 steps when I was in high school in the dim dear past.
On point. Too many players were coming into the league with AND1 habits so they HAD to stop calling it so strictly. Same reason the 3 point line was moved forward because players couldnt shoot worth a damn in the early 00s.
@@bpmachete so basically u only have one step after picking the ball up to go for a layup? thats what ur tryna say???? ur just making things up bro people have been gather stepping since the 80s. ill link u a video. idk what ur talking about "real basketball" when michael jordan himself waas gather stepping. it seems u just mad that u cant guard these newer moves. instead of 2 steps for a layup ppl take two steps back wards for a step back. or they take 2 steps for a euro. its not a travel just because u got schooled bro.
ruclips.net/video/SKdsA66Y0aQ/видео.html - 80s n 90s gather steppin
Great video coach. There are so many videos that are getting more views and spreading false information.
They should write a disclaimer that the "gather" step only applies to MVP caliber players that makes 100s of millions of revenue for the entertainment business called the NBA.
I think best thing before a pick up game is agreeing on what we consider as a travel so it isn’t as bad in game.
The trick is you step with the opposite foot to the hand which is dribbling the ball. So if I’m dribbling right handed I make step with my left then 1-2 clean layup
5th viewer....I love your style of playing....And I always try to follow you...Take love from Bangladesh...
Appreciate the love and support. 🙏
What a lot of people don't know:
- As it doesn't matter what you do with your feet while dribbling (as explained in this video)
- it doesn't matter what you DO WITH YOU HANDS / THE BALL while taking your 2 steps (as long as you don't start another dribble)!
So you can pass the ball to yourself (even multiple times) after the gather!
As long as you don't
- violate the traveling rules (> 2 steps, landing on the same foot, ...) with your feet
- and don't start another drible
-> it's legal.
When using the backboard to pass to yourself, even the number of steps doesn't count.
The rules have much more margin than most people think.
All I seen was 2 steps
His picks up the ball takes on step then another step then lays it up
I’m a older guy in my 30s
When I play with younger folk
My biggest pet peeve is they carry a lot
Or take a extra step
I never call it because people complain
And it turns into a argument and a waste of time when I just wanna ball
But your also at a disadvantage tho
Playing Defence because they take that extra step or they freeze the ball in the air
With their hand under the ball a little too much and re-dribble and say it’s a HEZI it’s BS because you have to predict and react at a pace that’s almost impossible at times
I had somebody complain
And said I was pushing on D
Because when he drove and put body into me…I tightened up my body to stand tall and told me i was pushing
They except you to just give open lanes
I love playing ball but it’s hard at times
Because of how people are or because your conscious of taking two step or about carrying the ball and where your hand is placed
And it’s second nature because that’s how you grew up playing because of rules/calls
The NBA made up their own rules but in the real world of basketball that “gather” count as a step.
Nba is a basketball joke!
I agree. They value entertainment more than rules, it's a business.
I disagree. This was a necessary evolution. Spin move and step back are so common now, we couldn't go back
Most guys who get traveling complaints take an EXTRA step after the one where you are shooting and not bringing your foot back down. Thats why people complain.
NBA
Edit
Rule 10, Section XIII-Traveling[2]
a. A player who receives the ball while standing still may pivot, using either foot as the pivot foot.
b. A player who receives the ball while he is progressing or upon completion of a dribble, may take two steps in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ball. A player who receives the ball while he is progressing must release the ball to start his dribble before his second step.
The first step occurs when a foot, or both feet, touch the floor after gaining control of the ball.
The second step occurs after the first step when the other foot touches the floor, or both feet touch the floor simultaneously.
A player who comes to a stop on step one when both feet are on the floor or touch the floor simultaneously may pivot using either foot as his pivot. If he jumps with both feet he must release the ball before either foot touches the floor.
A player who lands with one foot first may only pivot using that foot.
A progressing player who jumps off one foot on the first step may land with both feet simultaneously for the second step. In this situation, the player may not pivot with either foot and if one or both feet leave the floor the ball must be released before either returns to the floor.
c. In starting a dribble after (1) receiving the ball while standing still, or (2) coming to a legal stop, the ball must be out of the player’s hand before the pivot foot is raised off the floor.
d. If a player, with the ball in his possession, raises his pivot foot off the floor, he must pass or shoot before his pivot foot returns to the floor. If he drops the ball while in the air, he may not be the first to touch the ball.
e. A player who falls to the floor while holding the ball, or while coming to a stop, may not gain an advantage by sliding.
f. A player who attempts a field goal may not be the first to touch the ball if it fails to touch the backboard, basket ring or another player.
g. A player is not allowed to be the first to touch his own pass unless the ball touches his backboard, basket ring or another player.
h. Upon ending his dribble or gaining control of the ball, a player may not touch the floor consecutively with the same foot (hop).
Enforcement
According to some observers, enforcement of the rule as written is not necessarily rigorous in the NBA, and traveling violations are often overlooked.[3][4][5]
Can you do a version for high school basketball where gather step is not allowed?
Thank very much coach
If you both step and gather at the same time, is it still consider as 0 step? Or is it now your first step?
That's still wrong. Even if you give him three steps they go all the way to 10 steps and double dribble the ball and I'm not even talking about caring about and that's caring about what you saying. The problem is the league want the game to go fast but they don't want people to understand you can't not travel carry and double dribble. It's wrong no matter what the league rules are they teach you that all the way up to high school. It's wrong and those are the basic rules of the game. But they don't call them no more the ref.
2 steps allowed, 3 steps not allowed
For every dribble your alowed two steps and the player with the ball has control if holding or bouncing the ball.
Wrong
@@stopmarcus3605 honestly I don't know the rules of basketball It was just my opinion
That's wrong.
This is 100% ACCURATE! However, some of the stuff ive seen in the nba, includint James Harden, jts a travel. They say that james harden is doing a step back, but he's not. It's a full blown travel!
I have a question of Gather step
I have understanded about it but I got a one point for make sure it.
the point is this
*When the Zero step(First step) we should take the ball with one hand?
If it is two hand whe the first step, It is not the zero step It counts as a 1step.
is there any link of the rule book for the this point?
Doesn't matter if it's one or two hands. What matters is if you are picking it up/ending you're dribble.
I was taught one and 1/2 steps in high school period . The NBA rules allow for traveling to increase scoring that's why you don't see it called . The NBA today is a watered down me first weak version of what it once was - Fans want high scoring games and more dunks , so the NBA takes away the any real defense , and allows traveling, every decent player should be avg. 50 a night -
Wrong
How can you choose to do something with a basketball you have no control over? If it is in your hand, you have control of it.
Their is a reason the gather steps began in the nba
This video makes complete sense and they still travel in the NBA 🤣
A gather is just a hestitation dribble. You can’t count the steps until the ball is at rest. The ball is at rest when the either the ball is palmed, two hands on the ball, or a hand under the ball. The word gather step confuses those who doesn’t know the rules fully. I’m a HS referee, so I better know the rules.
Coach I have a question I don’t have a ball I only have a skipping rope and a tennis ball can I still practice my handles
Yeah you can still practice using a tennis ball or even imagining you have a ball to work on body coordination, fluidity, movement patterns and footwork, but it's best to get a ball if you can. Even a really cheap one.
@@GetHandles tysm coach
So if you are unable to control the ball, you can walk over the entire court with it?
And this is why you can’t guard anybody in the nba imagine if Jordan was allowed to do this lol he’d pick the ball up at 3 point line and dunk easily or a Clyde drexler. They dumbed down the game and I hate it
It's also legal in FIBA since 2020
Is control of the basketball when you stop dribble
Awesome🏀🏀🏀
Watch till the end for full context
@@GetHandles come to Indonesian and teach me how to become pro player basketball 🏀
Would love to get out there someday
So what about a situation when player is rushing with the dribble. Hit the ball to the floor makes two steps before the ball comes back to his hands and makes two more steps. I think its a travel. Or...?
When I was playing at my school every time I do steps to get the ball in they think it’s a travel because ngl bro they call all those flippin legendary moves 💀
In the first clip of the video, u have the gathering step. After that, u take 2 steps and do a lay-up.
Would it be a travel call if you pivot after stepping the second step(right foot)? like a fake and after that u do the lay-up.
No, that would not be a travel. Even more, you can actually take another step.
2 steps, stop, pivot, 1 step, shoot/pass.
The two steps is rule b. which he explained. The pivot, is rule d.
So i shoudnt use in Pick up game? Because i am sure, they arguing with me because of travel :/
There is no question about this move. It is the same thing as if you caught the ball and put it on the floor with both hands poping up to shoot a shot (post move). It is also the same thing as a hop step. The hop step is a gather step. The gather step is done correctly when the ball and the floor meet at the same time. I have never seen other wise.
Need to make one on fast breaks. The player has a pivot foot and CAN'T lift that pivot foot BEFORE dribbling the basketball. Jalen green just had a monster dunk but 100% traveled on the fast break. Happens so fast that you have to slow it down. It's a slippery slope though.
One question,
If you are running without the ball and you plant one foot down then your other foot down and they are now both planted then you get the ball, can either foot be the pivot foot since both feet were equally planted before gather the ball.
Absolutely, you dont need to count any steps before you have the ball, in fact you could jump in the air and get a pass and as long as you land with both feet at the same time you can choose to pivot from either foot
These are fine
If you take 3 steps from your last dribble
It’s a travel
That’s it
How is this move called in English where you make 2 steps and shoot?
Bro my trainer needs to see this I once took 1 step hit a 3 he called travel
Please make the video on gathering step or 0 step
I’m going into 8th grade basketball, with my layup i do a 1 2 step then jump on one foot and layup the basketball in the air, is that a travel?
Great video
Hey what's sup
Remember this and come back 10-15years later
right...lets call it creative travelling....lol
AFTER GAINING CONTROL OVER THE BALL!
I really don’t see how this is called a travel. This could only be a travel if a person is stationary and has control of the ball and then proceeds to take 2 steps. Simply because the pivot foot is lifted and replaced without a dribble, which
happens like crazy in the NBA.
2 steps with out a dribble from a stationary position is travel.
Step back is perfectly legal.
hi my name is josue rwima how do you do the the liyup in basket ball thank you james harden travel step back explain ed
I have lots of different refs like 5k
These all look pretty straightforward. Easy one two's, or a zero one two.
Problem is that the league got so lax on actually calling travels, that players like harden and lebron will just take more than the gather, one, two, or the one is counted as a gather despite the foot landing after possession of the ball is gained. And every MF who loves lebron just calls everything a gather step. Like goddamn, bro has been gathering since half court i guess.
All leagues should adopt nba rules, c'maaan
just remmeber guys if your playing street ball try to ignore minor fouls and remmember to have fun
Idk I'm looking at what he's doing here, doesn't look like travel or carry, but I see it in the NBA all the time that is way more egregious. And it never gets called. Also this dude talking about not complaining about the rules....ok bruh. So just let people break the rules and call it a fair game. Sounds fun.
Guys can a player take two steps backwards with ball
would not what? 0:51
It seems like the old rule/step
"Do not be that guy" - I Was about to do that, lol
Idgaf I’m still gonna be that guy 😂😂😂 those are the best, funniest, most heated moments of pick up 😂😂😂 when you and your boys are going back and forth debating the call, talking shit 😂😭
I am from Europe, have been following and playing basketball for nearly 30 years. According to FIBA rules, the moves in the video are/were not travel, not carry or not sth else but basic two step lay-ups as they been for 30 plus years at least, for which I watched and played the game of basketball. I do NOT understand why people taking these videos to show these moves are legal. These are the basic of basketball for years!
Sure wish you basketball video trolls would stop using NBA rules as examples. In high school basketball there is no zero step. The pivot foot is established when the dribble ends. You only get two steps after you end your dribble.
I agree, but the "steps" issue is confusing. The rule book states that after the dribble ends, you can not lift your pivot foot and return it back down to the ground before the ball is released from the hand for a shot or a pass. So usually on a layup one foot (the pivot foot by definition) is on the ground when the dribble ends, meaning you can only take one step with your non-pivot foot before the ball is released. The pivot foot can not come back down for a "second step" otherwise it is technically a travel by high school and college rules.
no
this shit perfectly explains the whole fuckin everything 😅
My elementary gym teacher told me this. I guess he was right and everybody else didn't receive his wisdom haha. I don't euro anymore because people don't understand the zero step. I take a huge step in 1 direction and gather the ball and finish with 1 step. People say I took 3!!!
Same thing happens to me so i understand smh
@Joe Jet Hey dats my move 😂
I dont think its a travel
The answer is kinda tricky
Walking with ball is traveling
I learned that in 1996
And what if a player always calls a travel if it's not true?
Specify what rules y’all are gonna play by. Be versatile, avoid confusion before the game.
Hello...nba rules only in nba
I'm none the wiser.. but yeah alot of those NBA guys travel , I reckon.. but then again , I can't play.. 😂
Bro everything your doing looks legal and like the traditional layup everyone's been doing since the 60s. your just taking really long strides . BUT Slow down any one of the "questionable" gianis/lebron plays they clearly take 3 large steps with the ball being held with both hands. But dummies
Keep arguing that it's legal.
people be like "that's gather step, then 2 other step to lay up, ofc its clean, also the refs not called it, do you even know the rule?"
Thanks for this; helped set some of my pick up guys straight who travel all the time and call me on two steps. I have long legs and I use em lol Great video
And this is why Furio called this "STUPIDA FACKING GAME"!!
I f ing agree 😂😂😂
and FIBA rules?
Really
Be sure to watch the full video for full context. 👍
@@GetHandles yes coach
Hey whatup
You example is legal in every leauge.
Two steps. Keep it simple.
It's funny how in all his videos he is only taking one step after the gather
Dude in the video never traveled at all and no one wants to see James Harden's traveling ass.
How the hell can you pump fake and not have control of the ball it’s a TRAVEL
You are confusing the word control!
I’m seeing a lot of traveling and carrying
Great
LEGAL according to official NBA rules (cf. ruclips.net/video/Xwi3W4_XXlg/видео.htmlsi=kyrk7VKRz9i6_o0W). 1) Guy gathered the ball with two hands (or places a hand under the ball). 2) Then he can take two steps before passing or shooting-in the video he only takes one step after gathering the ball, then shoots after jumping. LEGAL.
In addition, the other player broke the third rule in the confer video: Don’t be the dude arguing at pickup ball
my coach doesnt know this and it triggers me sm
Because it’s a dumb fucking rule…just say 3 steps if it’s really three steps
Try it on black top and dudes gonna call it right off the bat and you look old enough to know that yet you trying to sound like you know more than everybody else yet nba players travel and that zero step crap doesnt excuse the travels just rules made up to implement a game built around talent as opposed to skills and fundamentals but fundamentally its wrong and my integrity for the game would never allow me to play the way you play and id kick you off the court until you learn how to play basketball
it nots a travels because there's a gather step
i know its 1,2 and shoot but nba 1,2,3 and shoot in europe its travel :D and us not :D
I keep saying ppl are traveling in basketball at school don’t listen
*Your interpretation is wrong the one hand on the ball during the so called zero stepped is gathered you have the ball in your hand it doesn't need to be 2 hands so after that you take 2 more steps so that's 3 total and it's a travel they just stopped calling it because of goofy players like lebron and Westbrook who can't play within the rules so they adjusted it for the star players of today it's a travel man*
No
actually his interpretation is the same as what you think, gather step then +1 step to lay up, when NBA will add another 2 or 3 steps to lay up
Everyone knows NBA is not basketball. Unless WWE is actually wrestling. If the NBA actually made there rules on traveling actually based off the real rules of the game, then all the NBA all stars would be seeing a 10 pt drop in their PPG averages.
Cap
im completely lost
You are just taking 2 steps. You arent using the gather step.
he is using gather step +1 other step, in NBA they mostly use gather step then 2 other steps
This is lunacy. Travels and carries are out of control and the rules are clear in what needs to be done. Pander more
Hi
Hey hey
