  • Ramadan brings the cheerful lesson that we are capable of restraining ourselves and disciplining the nafs. But we are also called to look within and cultivate our inward qualities, especially the hidden parts that long for the affirmation of others.

Thank you so much, Sheikh. MasyaAllah I feel more contented after listening to this. I am not a person of knowledge, Sheikh, and am constantly told to wear brighter and better clothes because 'Allah loves to see His marks of blessings on His servants' and told to be more vivacious and extroverted because 'Muslims must be bold' and always, a fellow Muslim colleague will have something to say. And all I want is to be left alone to worship Allah and have quiet intimacy with Him. Your words soothed me.

I'm sure you too felt serenity wash over you when it came to the part, where Rasulullah SAW said Hayya', is the distinguishing criterion of Islam :) arent we lucky to have been selected by Allah Taala for devotion to Him. I dont know you, but I pray for you, that serenity abides in you. Ameen. I am with you in spirit

I had a major period in my life where my sense of competence depended solely on external validation through things like social media likes and popularity. It was a torturous cycle of constantly comparing myself to others based on appearance, status and materialistic things. I decided to delete my social media 2 years ago and I’ve now come to realize how enslaving and exhausting that life was.

even if im far from being the person who seeks celebrity, this just reminded me of how many times i was proud when crushing some commentator on social media or youtube while i had answers about religion or politics or in science he doesnt have .... whatever i may claim it wasnt done to show off, i know deep inside i was proud seeing the likes on my answer .... im trying to live a normal islamic life, and i really seek paradise...... but at this moment, hearing that, and trying to rewind all these moments i thought doing good by preaching islam to non muslims by answering comments or anything, and wallah sometimes it takes an hour to formulate one answer with proper links and proofs, all of this could worth nothing, in that moment you understand how a normal muslim not necessarily knowledgeable could beat you so easily..... better doing one good action for the sake of allah fearing that it wont be accepted, fearing celebrity, than doing so much and having that part in yourself being proud (even if that wasnt the main objective) that people agrees and clap to your deed.... la hawla wa la qouwwa illa bi Allah

Wow. This video sums up what I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. I’ve come to realize that being desperate in seeking worldly external validation automatically puts you at a state of inferiority and fragility as you enslaved to human beings’ opinions of you. This form of enslavement, and hidden idolatry distracts from the fact that we are only slaves of Allah (not people’s opinions of us) and are here to serve a purpose.

"A lover has four streams inside,
of water, wine, honey, and milk.
Find those in yourself and pay no attention
to what so-and-so says about such-and-such.
    The rose does not care
if someone calls it a thorn, or a jasmine
    Ordinary eyes categorize human beings.
That one is a Zoroastrian. This one, a Muslim.
Walk instead with the other vision given you, your first eyes.
Do not squint, and do not stare blankly like a vulture.
Those who love fire fall into the fire.
A fly slips from the edge into the whey.
If you are in love with the infinite,
why grieve over the ground washing away in the rain?
Bow to the essence in a human being.
    A desert drinks war-blood,
but if it knew this secret, springs would rise, rose gardens.
Do not be content with judging people good and bad.
Grow out of that. The great blessing is
that Shams has poured a strength into the ground that lets us wait and trust the waiting."
