The Strange History of Mr. Ed the Talking Horse

  • In the 1960s, the story of a man and his talking horse captivated the globe. The show was Mister Ed, and it followed the hijinks of a talking horse named Mr. Ed and his keeper Wilbur Post. The show became an instant classic, and the character of Ed has popped up everywhere from rap music and comedy sketches to children's shows.
Behind the character of Mr. Ed was a real horse. His name was Bamboo Harvester and he was already famous when he stepped onto the Hollywood scene. TV’s most famous horse was born and bred a star. Lighthearted and humorous at times, stubborn and imperious on occasion, the real Mr. Ed was a true trail blazer.

I just learned that "sweet tea" for horses is a small amount of sweet feed soaked in water. It's used to make sure a horse drinks enough water throughout the day.

Watched Mr. Ed in re runs. Great trainer and show. Burbank is a good place for horse retirement. Still a good # of stables, including those for rental horses and Griffith Park trail access. RIP Bamboo Harvester.

Hi Producers, I love your stuff. You just asked for ideas 0:25 and here's mine.
I was a kid when Bewitched was on and they had an episode where one of the characters dosed another character with LSD without their knowledge or consent, and wackiness ensued!
It was set in an insane asylum or a hospital or some such. I swear it's the truth. Thank you!

I Grew up in burbank, Mr. Ed was one of the great shows I grew up on. Only thing I'd have to say, is there is no such thing as ample parking in burbank these days. 😅

There was almost a remake of the show with Sherman (George Jefferson) voicing Mr. Ed. But I believe the show did not get past the pilot stage.

I saw the original first episode, the first time it aired. Wilbur said he always wanted a pony, and then said it was a long time since he was a child. Mr. Ed said “it’s been a long time since I was a pony”. Even as a teenager, I hated inaccuracy! Horses and ponies are different! Horses start their lives as foals, either colts or fillies.
I also have to say as a very young girl in grade school, I had a crush on Alan Young when he was in the movie Tom Thumb.

You can believe this or not! I was very close to Clarence, Ed's owner and Bob Roberts,, Francis the mules owner. I rode Ed and Frances in Parades and Bar openings back in my junior high school days. There are even pictures of me on Francis the mule during many parades in Corona, Mira Loma and the L.A. basin area. There was one stage after the nylon fishing line that a formed cup was used attached to fishing line, then a quirp was used hidden behind the barn door, finaly he would fidget his lip when Alan quit speaking. He was an awesome friend and show horse. E.J.P

My Mr Ed Book says he was trained to move his lips when someone would touch his out of camera front hove -- so who really knows ! BUT THAT HORSE did do lots of stunts like pick up the phone, pick up a big pencil, pull the light cord ... and so much more ! He was truly a beautiful animal as well !

It's good to hear he was well treated by his trainer. The 'horse whisperer' Monty Roberts' father was a policeman but also owned a ranch and was a horse breaker for Hollywood films and tv. Monty was horrified at the cruelty his father showed in both jobs and so he taught himself how to properly communicate with horses. I'm not sure about the wire attached to his mouth though....
