I am so happy that the shop worker gave us that tiny starfish! It is sooo cute!
Funny to think their 'eyes' are at the tips, so it was looking at you, looking at it!
Jam's Germs the correct name is ‘sea star’ because the name ‘starfish’ is misleading

Gotta go fast, gotta go fast
I have a tank that's been basically in continuous operation for almost 2 decades and seeing all the little bugs and tiny organisms and algae and all of it is my favorite things. I always tell people when you have an aquarium the entire ecosystem is the pet not the fish or the corals. You are caring for an entire ecosystem and it's beautiful
YES, PRECISELY!
My freshwater aquarium has only been in operation for a few years, but it has been fascinating-*utterly captivating*-to watch the ecosystem build up and hover at some invisible balance point. Just within the past two weeks I have discovered springtails living on the frogbit floating on the surface of the water (which I am certain are a tasty snack for the minnows from time to time) as well as copepods and ostracods! I have also become totally obsessed with the hydra in the tank, especially after witnessing two “Nat Geo” moments: one in which a hydra on the glass snagged a detritus worm that had been kicked up from the substrate during a water change, and another where a shrimplet narrowly escaped becoming a hydra’s dinner! 😱
Considering I have an aquarium and I just bought a microscope. Yes. I am very interested in what you can tell me
The woman that writes your scripts, I'm bad with names so please forgive me for not being able to remember her name, but I just wanted to say that she does such an amazing job of bringing all of her researched info together and having it be informative and beautiful and poetic at the same time. She has a wonderful way with words, and it's such a lovely gift to have. Thank you everyone at Journey To The Microcosms for all your hard work, it's greatly appreciated. 😊🙏🕊
Hank's voice in this series is one of the most calming things on RUclips. Seriously.
As an aquarist myself, the aquarium that you got the water sample from has a VERY healthy aquarium!
True! Admittedly, I'm mostly freshwater (for now) but I was impressed by the amount of coral life in that mall aquarium. I know home aquarists who can't get nearly that healthy a tank!

although i don't have a microscope(yet) , this channel has totally changed how i think about the world.
I completely changed my inner city garden with just a scoop of healthy soil from a forest.
I also had a home made self sustained environment in a jar. it had a little algae growing under the water, just 25ml's of water from my local park, and 2 weeks later, the algae is almost gone...
really appreciate these microbes so much more after thinking about them from a different angle
If they didn't exist, the food chain would collapse.
If you collect more water in a jar, you can see white dots form on the glass that are usually bacteria colonies. You might also spot visible microfauna, like daphnia, rotifers, ostracods and copepods!
The smiley face in the bottom left corner at 7:42 is me when hank said "I know that feel buddy."

You guys should team up with life in jars youtube channel. Never know what you might find in one of that guys ecospheres.
Same stuff, all healthy a1yariums have the same kinds of life. Life in Jars just has them concentrated on other places than the biofilters we have!
Most Lifeinjars ecospheres are freshwater, while this video's samples came from saltwater, so there should be some differences.
@@pendlera2959 No .. he has whole ecospher of salt water ... also, mini two week jars that he returns to the sea.
You too? Imma love Life in Jars dude. But like many I was so surprised he so young. Such a wry sense of humour and great music.

I love seeing the little copepods in my freshwater tanks and knowing that they are giants of the microcosmos, and that the smaller inhabitants are in there even if I don't know who they are
Thank youuuu for the distraction of everything that's going on around us! I can just come here whenever I feel like it and find cool science, lovely music, and a relaxing (and educational) voice

That Ciliate is like "WOOOOHOOOO, PARTY TIME IN THE MICROCOSMOS!"
This is the Microcosmos video I’ve been waiting for! You could do an entire series on aquarium microbes. Amazing!
I've been keeping aquariums for a long time now, and the understanding of the microscopic biome has advanced and greatly improved our ability to create healthy aquariums. I mean, for one thing, we mostly ditched the clog-prone under gravel filters, haha. Fishless cycling has improved the lives of many fish by sparing the sacrificial tough fish formerly subjected to the ammonia spikes in a cycling tank.
I would love to know if bottled bacteria products actually survive and colonize newly set up aquariums, and if so, if they are later supplanted by "wild" microorganisms, and so on. A decade ago, most of the products didn't seem to work, or were hit or miss depending on storage and so on. These days people seem to trust them more; I want to know if it's marketing or improvements in the product. But it's hard to find anything from trustworthy sources; only the companies themselves making vague claims, or anecdotal information.
Another thing that has arisen in the last couple decades and is really taking off is intentional bioactive enclosures for reptiles and other low-bioload terrestrial animals -- essentially fostering a nitrogen cycle in the soil. An appropriate, reasonably deep naturalistic substrate is used, and a macroscopic "clean up crew" is added like isopods and springtails. The goal is that the substrate is colonized by microorganisms, fungus, bacteria, and all the other good stuff; the CUC does the initial break down into something the microscopic can then process. I would love to know how the microorganisms compare in an isolated, small scale enclosure to the ones that are found in the great wide wild.
The script is awesome. The philosophical aspects that Hank brings out are almost like a therapy session.
Well this episode was unexpectedly salty.
85% of people clicking: okay, let's see what I might have in my freshwater aquarium? ... or not.
I love the way that no matter where you look in the world, you are going to see an ecosystem (save for special sterilized rooms, of course). The world itself seems to be composed of a nigh-infinite number of ecosystems with their different communities, interacting with one another to make up the panoply that we call life.
it would be great to watch up close the very tiny snails and the microscopic crustaceans, these are not unicellular but I found them very mysterious as well
An avid aquarium hobbyist and hobbyist aquatic horticulturist here, this video is just so dang cool. I work with aquariums for a living and having one of my favorite youtubers narrating an aquarium video was a great surprise!!
I had a copepod explosion last week, thousands of tiny animals zipping around. I never knew about them before.
Neuroxix it’s caused by an over abundance of food. They’re always there, but if there’s too many, it could be a sign of losing balance.
@@weezypeezy1725 well the fish can also use them as tiny shrimp crackers :p
i have ostracods, even worse then copepods... you can't kill them, fish can't kill them, they don't eat them and when they do, they come out again through the back.. hard shell they have, they survive everything.
An explosion you say? How ever did you... *COPE* ... with that?
2019: Wow, microbes are everywhere! :D
2020: OH MY GOD THE MICROBES ARE EVERYWHERE! T口T
Quantum Walnut aren’t we more concerned about viruses than microbes this year?
@@AlexandreBFK Viruses are too small to see with a light microscope. Requires electron microscope. There's a used one for 9000 dollars on eBay, if you wanna play with viruses in your home.
@Journey to the Microcosmos - beautiful. Narration by Mike is much closer to his natural self and what a difference. Thank you.
I have an aquarium and my husband and I named it “Tank Green” so this video is amazing ☺️
Foraminifera are amazing critters. They are ameba-like protists, single cell with many nuclei. They make their own phylum, so they are genetically quite removed from everyone else. They have shells, made either from chitin or calcium carbonate or sand particles glued together.
Most live on sea floor or in sea water. Some live in soil.
The largest foraminifera are 20 cm (8 in) in length! For a single cell that's huge!
So excited to see the Georgia Aquarium. Went there a couple of years ago when they got the whale shark. I’ve never seen one like that. It was amazing!!!
This is so calming
I'm here for that too !
Forams are awesome! I studied them in Micropaleontology & especially the benthic forams are wonderfully diverse with their different shell-materials, buildplans & ornamentation :) Thanks & keep up the great work!
I've got two freshwater tanks and I'm curious about the differences in microbes found in freshwater vs saltwater tanks. I've been considering picking up a microscope so this might be something I'll look into myself.
Freshwater next!
Then collab with King of DIY and Life in Jars, then we'll turn you into another aquarium channel!
It's all going according to plan, muhuhaha! >:D
I've always loved your videos but your quality is getting better and better. Your writing quality is phenomenal and I could just fall asleep to your voice; mirred with the beautiful sounds and calming imagery, I find myself coming back over and over. You guys are going to big places on RUclips - keep up the work and watch us flock.
PPPPPLLLLEEEEEASE show all of us what's in our own spit!!! Thankyou for your awesome work!!
I'm sure that saliva would be a rather hostile environment for microbes. That might just make it more interesting what's there.
bacteria are not that interesting to look at. So small and so boring.
@@Uhlbelk Excuse me do you know what part of youtube this is.
@@Uhlbelk Really... well that maybe your opinion but i think anything magnified 100s of times under a microscope looks amazing!! i doubt very much they'd be boring.
@@Uhlbelk well microbes are what this channel is about...
Hey guys!
I am a student and just before my A-Levels. I ´m really getting intersted in the Microcosmos
and thus wanting to buy a Microscope. Now, I´ve seen your Video on your mic. but it´s just out of my price range(400-600 €£ $). I also really like the dark-field microscopy so having an option to upgrade the microscope is relatively important too. I would really love some feedback on wich mic. I should look at.
Aidan Gray Check out the subreddit r/microscopy, it has great recommendations
We recorded all the clips in our first 3 episodes with a microscope under $200. Microscopy is an art and it requires a lot of practice to master, just get a microscope that you can afford and keep practicing, with an appropriate enthusiasm, you'll see what I mean! 😊
@@JamsGerms Your video is nice 👍
Hey I can't even explain how fascinated I am of these videos. For a while I was hoping you'd post some stuff from the aquarium hobby. I have my degree in marine biology and my entire life revolves around aquatic animals. Dont know the proper way to contract you guys but There's tons of crustaceans I can send over including unidentified parasitic pest for a few types of marine animals. Your quality in your videos Is absolutely incredible, and I nor any of my buddy's can achieve such videos like yours. Would be amazing to see something come together. Thank you!
I can't get enough of this channel! I would love to buy a tartigrade t-shirt...those little guys are facinating! Thank you for showing the world their true nature, and not exposing them to the vaccum of space...maybe you could rescue the astronaut tartigrades from Nasa, and give them a forever home with tons of rotifers to munch on...just a thought...
I have a Northern Pike, four Brown Trout, six Brook Trout(time to time eaten by the Pike), two Brown Bullhead, four perch. Run a Diatom filter, a couple times a week, to keep water clear of bad organisms. Have a full-time undergravel filter and in 2019, introduced a egg sac, which was freshwater Bryozoan. The fish & spotted turtles, gorged on most of it. The diatom filter took care of the rest. But for a few weeks, the water was extremely healthy. Gonna do so again this Summer.
This is the best channel I've come across in quite some time, such high quality and so interesting !
Oh hell yes. Salt water aquarist here, so this is way up my alley.
Didn't know Hank's voice could be so calm and soothing.
My cat loves watching that silly ciliate at the end! She almost never pays attention to the TV, but that little guy got her attention!
JttM always makes me smile. This one was no exception especially since I'm having a serious think about setting up an aquarium... again... This time though, I'll be armed not only with fishy knowledge but also with a strong inclination to put smears of some of the goopy stuff from the bio-filter under a microscope. Way to explode the pleasure factor from a water filled glass box!! 😍
A lot of work and a lot of appreciation for your work! You really change the way people see the world, thanks a lot for the videos!
Is it just me, or are ciliates just super energetic all the time?
Man I love this channel.
Reminds me again and again why I love microbiology, and why it was my focus in studies.
Though just watching these videos can be a bit more.... almost meditative, especially compared to doing a lot of actual lab work and whatnot lol
My goodness, you have such a soothing voice. Am a I learning or being hypnotized. "You will love microbes. When I countdown . . . Thanks for doing this so well.
thanks for taking the time out for the great shots with your *_"tracheloraphis"_* … was enjoyable to watch.
7:29 "I know that feel buddy"
LOL I loved that!
This channel is pure gold, true gem
Cool! Aquariums are what reignited my interest in microorganisms. Also, props to James for his microscope skills. I bet it's hard to keep the little guys in the shot, but he does it and well.
Always love these videos ever since the beginning cant stop re-watching just because I got nothing else to do anymore.
It would be really cool if you guys did more on this. One of the first organisms to be cultured after it was detected by molecular survey, a representative of a deeply diverging, abundant and important group of microbes in the ocean, the ammonia-oxidizing archaea, was first isolated from the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago if I recall correctly. Also, many hobbyist aquaria have a very rich system of refugia and nutrient-sink tanks, often with things like mangroves, muddy sediments, and algae, where small organisms can thrive without intense fish predation and where much of the important aquarium biogeochemistry occurs, including potentially anaerobic metal-, nitrogen- and sulfur-cycling microbial activities. Would be great for you to investigate- many unique taxa to be found I'm sure!
This is just about the best channel on RUclips.
These videos are so good to sleep to or to relax to. Its so peaceful
His voice is so soothing! I'd love listen to this as I fall asleep
Thank you for this. I needed it
Thank you patrons on patreon you are doing gods work
I just wanted to say I was binge watching these videos and didn't realize it was Hank Green until he said Phagocytosis and I had a sudden flashback to him chiding me for laughing at that word in a Sci-Show video.
I didn't know I needed Hank Green ASMR until now.
Awesome! One of your best . . . if not the best of the series!
*I'm loving this channels content*
i havent had to clean my filter for over a year thanks to these little guys
I'm trying to major in marine science, and this is honestly one of the most appealing aspects of it.
Wow!! I just made a video about this with my aquarium a couple of weeks ago. Good job!
i could have watched this stuff for an hour, very interesting!! maybe do fresh water aquarium next time :)
Unicellular? Ima need to know what that long bois made of.
Clutchyfinger: I never heard of this unicellular organism, before. I assumed it was a small nematode, but they’re much more complex!
Mostly water. =D
Next time someone asks me " How many fishes do you have? " I will have to say "Way more than the big ones you can see! " Thanks for an excellent presentation.
This was great, I don't know if you'd be interested in doing a video on the bacteria of each stage in an aquarium cycle, but I would be very interested in watching something like that.
I've been to the Georgia Aquarium, and I wanna go again. If you ever find yourself in Atlanta, its a wonderful place
Me: Sees foram on picture. (I'm a palaeoceanographer and work with forams!!!!)
Immediately clicks
they look so cute! their shape reminds me of the delicious braided bread we call zopf in switzerland ;)
did forams in geology ... ahhhh that's what they are.
Maybe i'm just a nerd, but honestly one of my favorite parts of having a salt water aquarium is just all the fascinating micro-fauna.
Naw, I totally get you. I keep a freshwater aquarium and I could spend literally hours just observing and investigating the ecosystem in the tank!
*Thank you* to all the patrons! 🖤
What a SILLY, Cilly Ciliate that was!! Like a cracked out little mouse.... lol...
You know what would be SOOOOO SUPER AWESOME!!???? If you had a contest where the winner/winners get to send you a water sample from their personal fish tanks or ponds or something and you guys do what you do with their sample and make videos on them!!!!!
That was such a good idea i felt a strong need to like it myself..😂
That little ciliate at the end is a big mood
Mind-blowing. Awesome loved it brother. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you Patreon supporters! 🥰🤗
We found plenty of tracheloraphis studying the meiofauna of the wadden sea. they are very vulnerable and got squashed by the cover glass so we had to build an aquarium of sorts by breaking a cover in half, putting a drop between the glasses and a fresh cover on top.
Awesome video as always!!! 👍🏻
THANK YOU .Another brilliant video. I keep aquariums and a microscope. Always inspiring
Thanks for the 3 hour search so we.. Of course you too could see it close up,.

Fascinating, as always fascinating! 👍
incredible video as always

beautiful video as always
