Justice League was my introduction to the character. I actually thought he was cool. He was the character that cut off his own hand to save his son. I disagree with the brave and the bold note. I think all the characters were silly. That was part of the show's nature.

Before I started reading about Aquaman i just thought "Pfft what's so great about him he's just some guy that can swim and breathe underwater and communicate with fish." But with Jason Momoa's Aquaman film coming out and when I saw the trailer it really inspired me to get into reading about him the only stuff I knew about him was the time when he lost his hand by a school of Piranha's and he replaced it with a harpoon but then I looked up the time when his only son was killed by Black Manta and also learning some of the other stuff he can do like he's as strong as Superman he leap far distances he has incredible reflexes and that trident he has which can summon lightning and massive tidle waves now Aquaman's on my list of favorite DC Heroes it's now the top 4 my top 4 are 1.Superman 2. The Flash 3. Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) 4. Aquaman.
Well, Aquaman from the comics is really badass. And I just mean in general, not the hard boiled 90s guy. And Jason Momoa is such a fantastic and charismatic actor, I have a lot of faith on this movie. Even though Black Mantra probably won´t talk with autotune. :c
I am a hell of a lot older than you and I always liked the Aquaman character over Namor. I grew up in south Florida and lived near the beach it gave me the desire to become a scuba diver and explore what I could. The character in my mind was the cool Jacques Cousteau not the old fart with his own ship.
@@feroniks366 I was born in 58 I grew up during the 60's and early 70's what I posted here is not a lie. my grandparents ran a motel on the beach in Hollywood Fl. from the late 50's until 1979 where I spent every summer until I lived with them during high school. I think Spongebob also had a lot to do with it. They used silly Super Friends version of Aquaman and Aqualad to create their worn out superheroes for the show, and it left a lasting impression on us who grew up watching Nickelodeon and CN when Hannah Barbera was out of the spotlight for kids programming. I am also excited by the new Aquaman, and I hope it gives some respectability to his character.
SpartAN3457 Also it wasn't just spongebob, every other cartoon that parodied superheroes had at least one character whose ability was to talk to something useless. I remember a rugrats episode where they were playing as imaginary superheroes and tommy had the ability to talk to diapers and that was all he could do. Family had jokes about aquaman being useless, so many properties made fun of the character. .
It seems like every time DC messes up, Aquaman always comes out as the cool character. It's like all the effort for everything somehow just went into Aquaman.
I think Peter David said about Aquaman something along the lines of him being more a badass than most every other superhero in that you could have Arthur fighting bad guys in Gotham, Metropolis, Central City... etc. and Arthur would do about as good a job of fighting those bad guys as any of the other heroes but the list of heroes that could even survive standing on the bottom of the ocean is a very short list.
It's too bad that Jason Momoa is known more for Game of Thrones rather than Stargate: Atlantis since that seems to tie in better with him being cast as Aquaman.
It may have started with Family Guy. In particular, the episode where he is laying on a couch underwater asking a fish to get him a beer. Unless the stigma pre-dates 10 years ago when that aired.
I really like the smallville depiction it's really fun and I think it was a very cool take. The lack of the Atlantis stuff I don't hate cause I understand there are budgetary limits but there are hints towards it with Mera and that he would one day ascend to the throne.
@@Eagle0watch7dv if it was a fight between Aquaman and Perseus this would be thier conversation Aquaman- I'm king of Atlantis Percey Jackson- Dude your holding my dad's Triton its mine now. Percy Jackson then Crushes aquaman with the force of gravity under water
the new 52 comic version of aquaman created by Geoff Johns I think portrays aquaman really well and would be a good introduction to aquaman. I'm glad that dc got Jason Mamoa was cast as aquaman because at least it's succeeded in changing a lot of peoples opinion's about him which will hopefully result in more aquaman content. i will admit the movie itself left me disappointed. I think the way they should portray aquaman should be more subtle. yes his abilities are important and make him strong, but it's his strength of character that makes him formidable. i can't prove this, and I might be wrong, but i was always under the impression that aquaman which was created in 1941 was dc's response to marvel creating namor which was created in 1939
I don't remember how it was portrayed in Super Friends, I never watched the 60s show, and I never watched the few episodes of him on Justice League or Superman; so my first impressions from Aquaman were from a joke Cartoon Network Commercial where the Powerpuff Girls save the Super Friends. Then from a parody show on Cartoon Network LA, named Aquaman and Friends Action Hour. My first look into the more serious Aquaman was with the Injustice videogame.
TBH, My first impression about him was from Super Friends shows( And in that time i didn't even know it was called Super Friends shows)......So later when i reading comics it really surprised me.....
I'm glad he's getting a solo movie, it's probably going to be the best depiction thus far! I'm not a huge DC fan, but I have ALWAYS loved Aquaman and Green Lantern. I play Injustice with my best friend, I'm Aquaman or any one of the Lantern's. I bought Lego Batman 3 for all of the Lantern focus. Totally excited for him to not be a joke anymore
Aquaman has always been cool to me even in the DCAU shows like justice league unlimited and young justice. Shows like spongebob and family guy are what made people not take him seriously. Which is a disservice. Edit:guess super friends is also to blame.
two things i think could help aquaman become less of a joke. First, do what they do with the flash. we need to actually see superman tie or lose to aquaman in a race/fight/etc in popular media under the sea. like super man is superman but he kind of takes a sidekick position to flash when the episode is about speed, sometimes same for lantern when its about space. well this should happen also when its about underwater. second they should do what marvel does with their main line up in smaller media. mention him like marvel mentions the hulk even when hes not around. tvs in the background should have world events about atlantis, the watch tower should mention they dont need to send anyone to save a sub or something because you-know-whos can handle it in his sleep. Young justice i think does this well in the way they have the main heroes existence constantly held over the heads of the team. in fact id say atlantis in general as well as aquaman is pretty well depicted in young justice as badass despite him barely actually being in it.
That actually makes sense why he's was a joke back in the old days, and no wonder why they picked him to fight SpongeBob in Death Battle which is happening soon
ive always been an aquaman is a bad defender i was a bit excited hearing jason would be playing him because i felt he could make people want to like aquaman seems to be working looking forward to seeing the solo flick
I genuinely enjoyed the 60's cartoon a lot as a kid (growing up in the 90's). Though I think something that was kinda touched on here but not really is that he's DC's answer to the original and oldest Marvel Super Hero, Namor the Submariner, who is so much more consistent. Which I think is a big part of why I can never really care about Aqua Man all that much, since he's a rip off. Though on a related note, I actually highly prefer the Adam West and Brave and the Bold versions of Batman since I think otherwise it's super easy to accidentally turn Batman into a villian by virtue of being the bazillion who gets his rocks off by beating up poor folks in the street.
Aquaman has so much potential, it's unfortunate a lot of comic writers, save for some writers, don't get him or render him useless or find his "sea" thing boring. Dude can summon a fucking sea monster out of the ocean's nether regions and yet most writers find him lame.
I kinda see him as a joke, he is far from the best to have outside of water missions where he really shines but outside of that he is just a super strong dude. He is a specialist for the water missions of course but that's pretty limiting, versatility is not his strong suit. Plenty of super heros have super strength and durability so why would you go with the guy who is the water guy specifically for a land mission?
To not mention Family Guy, South Park, Big Bang Theory, and Spongebob I think was a mistake. I believe they had a bigger impact on forming the general public’s view on Aquaman then any superhero show.
