@@Kikucheeseful Basically, the theory was that Ultemecia is who Rinoa becomes in the future as a Witch. There's a LOT to go over, but it goes to so many things said over the course of the game. Ultemecia's GF is even whatever you name your pendant at the beginning of the game. There's a reason when the director said the theory isn't true, most people didn't really care since whatever other reason they had makes even less sense, and just isn't as good.

@@IconOfSin24148 Ultimecia is from the far future well after Rinoa has died. Ultimecia's Castle is even shown to be created well after Edea's Orphanage has crumbled away since it's found in the same location. You name Griever half way through the game, not at the beginning of it, and it's a ring not a pendant. In the Japanese, it's more clear that Griever is summoned from the mind of Squall, and the battle is essentially Squall overcoming his fears that Ultimecia is turning against him. You have to bear in mind that Ultimecia's power is to delve into people's minds... she takes control of Edea, and she can see into Rinoa's mind too. So of course she would toy with Squall by mimicing Rinoa's mannerisms.
Some of Rinoa's mannerisms also are witch-like (how she points her finger in that characteristic gesture she does) which Ultimecia could have copied through mimicry or because she also is a witch.
Rinoa shares similiarities to Ultimecia because they are portrayed and yin and yang opposites, not because they're the same. Ultimecia is red with white hair and black wings, Rinoa is blue with black hair and white wings etc. They're not the same person.
Ultimecia is essentially trying to combine all of the sorceress powers back into one entity, through time compression. If you read the lore of FFVIII, the sorceresses try not to spread their power too thinly, because that dilutes the power of the Great Hyne across time. What Hyne wants, is to combine all the sorceress's power across generations back into one single form (junctioning / merging etc.) which will allow it become whole once more. Ultimecia is basically to Hyne... what Sephiroth is to Jenova. And time compression is FFVIII's version of the Reunion. It would totally undermine Rinoa's character to have her turn evil, since she teaches Squall the importance of living life rather than running away from it out of fear of abandonment. The idea that Rinoa is bitter after Squall's death totally undermines the whole point of the story... that it's not the destination that matters, it's the journey. That sure... you may eventually lose someone in the end, but you should enjoy the time you have with them while they're here, rather than let your fear of loss take over before you've even lost it. Rinoa is not the type of person who would became angry at the world after experiencing loss, she would be grateful she had the opportunity to be with Squall in the first place. That's what makes them the heroes, compared to Ultimecia who is alone at the end of time and allows Hyne's evil to control her.
If they ever remake FF8, it would IMO be great to explore Ultimecia more and why she is the way that she is. Keeping with what I said, she probably would need to be Rinoa's opposite. Have a similar life experience to Rinoa, but making the opposite decisions. Being someone who is initially trusting but gains abandonment issues after being betrayed or something, perhaps sealed away by a SeeD (as opposed to being freed by one like Squall did.)
......yeah i ship them too XD. Some of the fandom also ship Ultimecia with Sephiroth. Making jokes like if they have kids, the universe is basically screwed since they are both op characters.
It's even worse if you factor in my FF/Pokemon fanfics. All the villains turn into overpowered legendaries and the heroes are powerless, usually not even fully evolved, lol. Also, yay, a fellow Squall x Ultimecia shipper!
