@@cockoffgewgle4993 That is technically true but remember, we are talking about just overall total power possible. Yes, Foreman is better at maintaining his power across the board, but Wilders 1 right hand Punch still has more power total than any of Foremans or anyone else.

R.I.P. To 2 legends of boxing. I never did understand why Ali wanted this fight. It was late in his career and I know he under estimated Ernies punching power. It was a sad day when I found out that Ali had passed away. 2 days ago Ernie passed away. 2 great fighter and don't think they disappointed anyone.
Ali kept fighting even know he should have retired. Such a legend, the world is thankful we had such a man, he was quick whetted, and talented with anything the guy ever did. R.I.P legend!!
Ali was so much less effective at 225 lbs. Although he still had his legendary stamina, the extra weight didn't give him additional punching power, and it was harder for him to get out of the way of big punches. His peak weight was 212.
That wasn't the issue, the issue was you could already see he had early onset Parkinsons, didn't look right at all, his coordination was off and he looked extremely slow movement and reaction wise. Some of that will also have been down to Father Time, but he was a shadow of the fighter he was just a few years earlier. If anything, his weight and additional power saved him more than you might think.
Ali takes 4 bombs and plays it off in the 2nd round. Best announcer for any of Ali’s fights. Doesn’t try and berate Ali’s skills that have diminished because of age, but instead compliments Ali’s ability to take a punch and still entertain the crowd. Not just any punch did Ali take but maybe the hardest hitter ever (has to be top 3 for sure).
Appreciate your comment. I feel Cossell just interjects himself into a fight, berating, advising, and often he's just completely wrong. The tapes with Cossell would be improved with a modern observer replacing the sound of Cossell.
@@jeffmoore9487 Cossell spoke the truth. Ali should have retired after the Foreman fight. Because his familiy wanted him to stop, But Ali was a slave to fame.
@@jhovaj9497 Why should Ali, or you, care what Ali does in his carreer or in a particular fight? Cossell's consistent questioning of Ali is distracting. An Ali fight is usually a work of art. Cossell telling us what Ali should do is unwarranted.
The 3rd fight with Norton should've been his last tbh, he might've been looked at as an even greater champion since he had a lot of title defences, waa very dominant, never got stopped, and was the champ in 2 decades (mid to late 60s and early to mid 70s)
I swear Ali doesn’t look or move like when he was younger. As a boxer myself he’s a true champ to fight even tho he knows he’s not the same he was before and can still battle with the best of them
He should’ve never fought after he defeated Foreman. This fight really took a toll on him and in my opinion was the most impressive victory given the fact that he was way past his best and already had signs of deterioration in his skills. To go 15 rounds with the hardest puncher ever is beyond amazing.
Don't get me wrong, Ali was incredible but can we please appreciate how awesome Shavers was during most of this fight? The man's probably the hardest heater in hw history. Respect for both of these legends
Ali is a fucking Shadow of his prime years.Even a Shadow of what he used to be 3 years ago against Foreman and Frazier. His reflexes are gone his slow his footwork lost and still achieved to win a very strong and powerful boxer who was knocking out most of his opponents.Ali had still just his heart, his iron chin and the intelligence how to handle the situation. He was really one of a kind
I 've watched all of ali's fights, the biggest change I seen in his development towards parkindon's came after this fight with shavers, heavy head snapping punches landing throughout this whole fight. When he fought spinks he looked off by a lot.
I’d never seen this fight before, so it was fun not knowing the outcome. I had it tied after 10, Ali up7-5 after 12, and had it tied 7 rounds each going into the last round. And Ali finishing strong winning the round and the fight , with the heart of a champion. This fight was way closer than the judges scored it. 9 rounds to 6 feels a bit generous to me, but either way, tactical fight by two greats. R.I.P. gentlemen, thanks for the entertainment and inspiration.
Ali was past his best here. Frazier was never that big of a puncher to begin with. And Foreman never managed to land clean on Ali the way Shavers does here.

I haven’t watched this version yet. I’ve only watched a copy of the NBC broadcast. I still think Shavers won this fight; but Holmes beat Shavers cleanly in a 12 round heavyweight eliminator in March 1978 and truly was the heir apparent of the Heavyweight Crown. Holmes really was underrated because everyone assumed he was overrated.
This fight took place after Ali's steady decline in his cognitive functioning. His parkinson's was setting in and it got worse by 78 and 79 forcing him to retire in 81. I love Ali but, Shavers could have won this match if they had stopped it in the early rounds with a TKO because their were times when Ali got pummeled and didn't fight back. The judges loved Ali and if u were his opponent u had to earn that win against Ali if u were to beat him, but Ali didn't have to work so hard to beat u because he was Muhammad Ali, the most colorful fighter of his generation. I wish Ali had retired after the Thrilla in Manilla fight. After 75, Ali was a shell of his former self. Ali won this fight Like Rocky Balboa, getting beat up most of the fight and then coming back to score a win at the end.
Ali left a lot in the ring with Joe Frazier and Joe Frazier left a lot in the ring with Ali. They use to question Ali's jaw back early in his career but he takes a punch with the best but you could see the fight game catching up with this great gladiator.
If you watch the full match 2nd time... We will understand why Ali won.... Shavers won round 1, 2, 6, 7, 13, 14 only, from round 8 (except 13 and 14) is only Ali who scored....
Bro what fight are you watching? Ali won round 1 there is no way how Shavers won that round? Give me explanation of how did Shavers won round 1?? Or you blind? Sorry sir
I respect Shavers, from what I’m watching he could’ve really hurt Ali 3rd round but held back. Also Ali is unfathomable. The man is fighting with Parkinson’s and making no excuses, fighting arguably the heaviest hitter of all time and still won
Honestly best commentary out of ALL OF ALI FIGHTS … some are so BIASED and for Ali ONLY..so happy he was barely speaking and if he did it was on things fairly lol every other fight I literally hated the commentary 😩
This is still the beautiful, if not the best boxing match ever in history. Both fighters were having fun without the intention of killing each other. Ernie was smiling all the time with Muhammad Ali did what he does best, dancing around the ring showcasing the art of boxing. This is what's lacking in today's sport, be it boxing or any sport.
It is such a terrible shame Ali fought while showing clear signs of brain damage. That said, the fact that he won this fight at an advanced age while suffering from Parkinson's disease is objectively a bigger accomplishment than his victory over George Foreman. The guy was just unreal.
So you don’t know boxing ? the judges score boxing not throwing punches, shavers head hunts the whole fight he has no footwork no jab no head movement and no combos passed a 1-2 and his right over hand was the only thing doing damage and he missed with it more then he hit him with it even if the shots were solid, when it comes to the judges they judge the boxing, shavers was a knockout artist and like Forman who also was a KO artist until they fought a real boxer Ali of course they couldn’t do it because they can’t box. It’s not a brawl in the street lol it’s a sport as far as the judges are concerned, me personally I know that it has to be treated like life and death, cause it is we can die In a ring or cage it happens but the way it is even socially acceptable is because it was given a sport aspect, mainstream media and people and sponsors and everything else would
Judges score boxing, not the same thing over and over while walking into a jab and not moving his head out the way either, his distance was so off too that’s why he could only hit Ali when he was backed up and that’s cause they had some tight ass ropes, (go to Forman vs Ali in Africa you’ll see what I mean about the ropes) But yea he missed way more right hand shots then he landed, they all were extremely telegraphed ALi saw them coming every time !!

The commentators and the media kept expecting so much from Ali that he bought into his own BS. He was the GOAT, for a while, but never seemed to understand when his time had come and gone. The truth is, if he hadn’t needed money, Ali should’ve already been retired at this point, despite a win over Ernie
Back in the late 80's, Arsenio Hall had Muhammed Ali as his guest on the Arsenio Hall Show one night and Hall asked Ali straight out......"who hit you harder than you ever got hit during your career"? Ali didn't hesitate for a second in saying "Earnie Shavers."
ALI THE KING OF THE GREATEST HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION WHEN THAT DIVISION HELD SO MANY TALENTED ATHLETES LIKE ERNIE SHAVERS, WITHOUTA DOUBT THE GREATEST HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION EVER
Ali said Shavers was one of the “strongest” fighters he fought. Ali developed a system for winning fights and unbeknownst to most of Ali’s opponents, Ali’s loudmouthed prose initiated the fight weeks or even months before the first bell. Ali understood that living in his opponents’ head, rent free, was the crucial first step to the title.
well... Ali is the best. 9:03, after that hit his power of recuperation... that was a hard bow man....and then 10:23. wow he keeps putting the show... never again that kind.
I have watched this fight a few dozen times (GREAT UPLOAD BY THE WAY. REALLY CLEAN, THANK YOU) and I still have it scored the same this time as the first...... *8-6-1 ERNIE SHAVERS*
He wasn't trolling, Ali said later this was the hardest opponent he had ever faced (and hardest hitter) and he also said it took his all to beat him. If Shavers had a bit more stamina, this could have ended very differently. Don't underestimate Shavers.
You fell for his bullshit. Trolling my ass. He definitely stopped "trolling" after getting hit hard though huh? Ali did terrible in this fight. Just be honest.
At 8:53 after landing a fast flurry, Ali does a little cocky move and a taunt, at 9:01 he gets the full Earnie Shavers experience in response. I have watched this fight and seen that moment from another angle, you can see just how hard he was hit and the shock on his face when I think right then and there he realizes that’s the hardest he’s ever been hit by another boxer. He played it off well, but you can see it there. 10:24 would have felled lesser fighters. Holmes was on the receiving end of virtually the same punch. Holy cow, what incredible boxers they were…! Ali in a later interview was asked who the hardest puncher was and he didn’t hesitate for an instant naming Earnie Shavers. Didn’t have to think about it, he knew and payed homage to that. Much respect to both fighters but I do agree anyone that ever stepped in the ring with Ernie, came away with him as the hardest they’ve ever been hit. I love both fighters and those were the days of heavy weight champions. Rest in peace to those great ones.
Shavers got robbed. Ali was terrible in this fight. Good to know that the bad boxing judging has been around for a long time. Ali was even knocked down and they didn't even give that to Shavers. All that pretending and goofing around Ali was doing should have lost him those rounds. The announcers were extremely biased in favor of Ali too. Such bad everything throughout the whole fight. Only the audience knew what was really up and who really won.
A brutal bout. To be honest Shavers beat the crap out of Ali & should have gotten the decision. Ali was too far past his prime, and shouldn't have taken on a murderous puncher like Shavers. He was lucky to survive the fight.
Tbh that’s what made him a great elite champion! He defied all the odds and took on the premium boxers of all time.. what a legendary human being he is..
@@NabzKay001 Yeah it was consistent with his spirit as the champ and he had always done well against one punch knock-out artists like Foreman and Liston, so it's natural that he neglected the reality that father time catches up with us all, and to take this fight. Shavers won this fight! I watched the whole thing and Shavers clubbed Ali right in the face in nearly every round so many times I lost count. Just the body shots Shavers hit him with should have qualified him the winner. Ali a poor showing, clowning, wobbling his knees, got hit so many times by Earnie you couldn't count them all. Fr, he was a real hard hitter but I think to many people living in their fantasy world and look at those fighters trough multicolored glasses. There are much stronger boxers (physically). One of Ali’s most impressive wins considering him having Parkinson’s and facing the hardest puncher of all time
Foreman is the hardest puncher of all time
Yes, one of the hardest punchers in history but idk about num 1. I think Wilder tops that list above Forman, Liston, etc.
@@abcd-gg6jz If Foreman and Wilder fought, Wilder would spend the whole fight running away. Wilder has one big punch, every Foreman punch is big. He knocked guys out with jabs.
@@cockoffgewgle4993 That is technically true but remember, we are talking about just overall total power possible. Yes, Foreman is better at maintaining his power across the board, but Wilders 1 right hand Punch still has more power total than any of Foremans or anyone else.
@@abcd-gg6jz I'd still say Foreman's hardest punch is harder than Wilder's. Foreman lifted Joe Frazier off his feet and sent guys flying across the ring with body shots. Wilder hasn't fought many notable fighters. And when he did, he lost.
But it's all subjective.
R.I.P. To 2 legends of boxing.
I never did understand why Ali wanted this fight. It was late in his career and I know he under estimated Ernies punching power.
It was a sad day when I found out that Ali had passed away. 2 days ago Ernie passed away. 2 great fighter and don't think they disappointed anyone.
if you underestimate a hitter so heavy like Shavers, with the record he had you are stupid or the parkinson is already in an avanced stage
Ali kept fighting even know he should have retired. Such a legend, the world is thankful we had such a man, he was quick whetted, and talented with anything the guy ever did. R.I.P legend!!
You aint the real Kid Dynamite!
God knows will
Hey Mike!
Keys fighting because his entourage kept encouraging him too as he was their main source of income
Are you talking about the guy who starts talking at 1:42? Because that's the announcer. Or were you talking about the commentator?
Appreciate your comment. I feel Cossell just interjects himself into a fight, berating, advising, and often he's just completely wrong. The tapes with Cossell would be improved with a modern observer replacing the sound of Cossell.

Holmes is overrated, indeed.
I was at the fight in the second row, and I thought Shavers won. Both missed many punches, but Shavers' punches were more effective when they landed.
Ali was much tougher than Holmes and even he said it himself! Ali clearly won!
Yep, both were never the same after Thrilla in Manila
Do you mean "question his CHIN ".JRS
If you watch the full match 2nd time... We will understand why Ali won.... Shavers won round 1, 2, 6, 7, 13, 14 only, from round 8 (except 13 and 14) is only Ali who scored....
Thanks doctor obvious
He scored Shaver's gloves, that's what he scored whereas any Shaver's punch threw him away and you could see how heavy those punches were.

I respect Shavers, from what I’m watching he could’ve really hurt Ali 3rd round but held back. Also Ali is unfathomable. The man is fighting with Parkinson’s and making no excuses, fighting arguably the heaviest hitter of all time and still won
Incredible fight, clash of styles, respect to those legends.
After watching this I personally think Shavers won this fight.
It’s not a brawl in the street lol it’s a sport as far as the judges are concerned, me personally I know that it has to be treated like life and death, cause it is we can die In a ring or cage it happens but the way it is even socially acceptable is because it was given a sport aspect, mainstream media and people and sponsors and everything else would
Judges score boxing, not the same thing over and over while walking into a jab and not moving his head out the way either, his distance was so off too that’s why he could only hit Ali when he was backed up and that’s cause they had some tight ass ropes, (go to Forman vs Ali in Africa you’ll see what I mean about the ropes)
But yea he missed way more right hand shots then he landed, they all were extremely telegraphed ALi saw them coming every time !!
