    The force is pushing the beam down right, so how is it anti clockwise, suppose to be clockwise I think, clarification please

      I think it's easier to write M= 6x-15(x-3). Since you're taking the pivot at the point of the imaginary cut. Hope that helps

      The moment is in the opposite direction to the force applied.

      maureen dobinson it splits the beam in to smaller/simpler sections enabling us to calculate shear forces, bending moments, etc.

      Hi Sanjay - You can take imaginary cuts at different locations but the principles remain the same.
