- This is the Ukes' version of the Who's classic, Pinball Wizard, live at the Royal Albert Hall.
On Tuesday 18th August 2009, with every seat and all standing room occupied, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain played to a sold-out Royal Albert Hall in London, with over 6000 audience members, and well over 1000 of them bringing ukuleles to join in with Beethoven's "Ode to Joy".
This clip is taken from their DVD "Prom Night", The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain Live at the Royal Albert Hall BBC Proms 2009, made from filming on the night.
The music played is:
Puffin Billy (Edmund White, Great British Light Music Classic)
Anarchy in the UK (The Sex Pistols)
Ride of the Valkyries (Richard Wagner)
Silver Machine (Hawkwind)
Life on Mars (David Bowie)
Thunderball (James Bond / John Barry)
Teenage Dirtbag (Wheatus)
Danse Macabre (Camille Saint-Saëns)
Jerusalem (William Blake and Hubert Parry)
Psycho Killer (Talking Heads)
Ode to Joy (A fragment of Beethoven arranged for 1008 ukuleles)
Pinball Wizard (The Who)
The Dambusters March (Eric Coates)
Melange (which reveals how all the key rock songs are variants of one theme)
Wuthering Heights (Kate Bush)

You all encourage me so much more over here in California USA 🇺🇸 thank You
What did the person in the audience holler out before the song?
@@noahway13 It sounded like they yelled Judas. I suspect they were talking about Judas Priest which was an English heavy metal band
My wife died ten years ago, just before her diagnosis with a brain cancer we saw the Orchestra, at Cadogan Hall. During her last days we watched them many many times. Thanks guys.
One of the best acapella versions I've ever heard. Love this group.
Better than the Who or Elton John
Best version I have ever heard.
"Pinball Wizard" as an a cappella sea shanty?! It works! Love the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain!
I agree, and I think it works as a opera and a ballad the way Pete Townsend sings it solo. And now a sea shanty too!
Ever see Alien Ant Farm do "Smooth Criminal?"
Choked when I read this
What an amazing group of performers - first class, but very enjoyable and entertaining! I would love to see this live sometime!
I was there ! Me'n'the wife'n'the daughter………clutching our ukuleles to join in with the Ode to Joy….it was so joyful !
Love George Hinchliffe's voice!!! (first guy talking, main singer) Love them all, actually.
I have listened to this version of Pinball Wizard, numerous times. I just realized the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain was performing without instrumental accompaniment.
Wow that actually brought me to tears. I don't know what it is about Acapella or choir singing but it gets me everytime. And whoever is hitting that high note sounds just like Townsend. Major thumbs up👍👍👍
I just have to give these folks a listen every once in a while just to prove that I still have a sense of humour! Fantastic!
My parents had a Ukulele Orchestra CD, and this is the version of Pinball Wizard I grew up with. Imagine my shock hearing the original for the first time (recently, lol!!)
Lol!
Sorry for you!
I haven't laughed this hard in YEARS. Thank you George and the great Ukes!!!!!
The classic version with George on top form. Cant get enough of this one. Taking it and making it yours is pure magic... hope live stuff starts soon for you all. Amacf
I love this group ! Unlimited talent ...
Thank you internet. Yes I will watch Pinball Wizard by a Ukulele Orchestra.
You just don’t expect what you hear ... looking like local Bankers dinner party, such skill, so together .... and amazing sense of humour.
Laughin' "til I cried. This is BRILLIANT!!!
Once again this shows how versatile Pete's Music is, it translates into so many genres. Here sung like a sea shanty. Amazing, fuckin' amazing!!!!!!
Pinball Wizard as a sea shanty..... priceless!
Spencer Dean funny thing is my choir has adopted this song as a full on sea shanty which we will perform for the tall ships when they come to the north east.
Spencer Dean--For those who may not know, sea shanty, sea chantey, sea chanty are all variant spellings of the same thing, derived from the French word, "chanter", meaning "to sing".
wow! those vocals are phenomenal. i like the traditional version of this song since forever but you guys really blew everyone else clean out of the water. (i just listened to several covers of this song to see who i like best. definitely yours)
"Judas" he shouted!! Brilliant ....pinched from Dylan's going electric concert in May 1966 at Manchester's Free Trade Hall
Sharp is my favourite. you can see that the audience is fully engaged. Brilliant.
This group was a recommended video. Wow they are fantastic and so so funny lol. I will be checking out more of their music. Bravo!
Dear heaven, thanks very much for the 'happy chance' that finds me watching this ... been a while since I saw anything so utterly brilliant ... who'd have thought !!!
Kit Carr--I do so agree with you!!!
@@onemercilessming1342 :-) Nice vase :-)
Absolutely BRILLIANT rendition of a very classic ROCK SONG, loved it.
Just stumbled on to this marvelous performance !!
jolly good I might say
Absolutely bloody brilliant, well done all.
Thank you, thank you. You really made my morning.
I was waiting for the ukulele Pinball Wizard riffs but this is great the way it is.
Please make sure you come back for a concert in München. I cant wait to see this on stage. See you at MotelOne Deutsches Museum💁♀️
Well that wasn't what I expected to hear and see at first. But that singing is so skillful and an interestig interpretation of The Who's Pinball Wizzard. Just imagined it beeing sung while manning the capstan back in the age of sails.
I have no words you haven't heard...but simply amazing. thank you!
As a Who fanatic and Pinball Wizard was an integral part of my growing up as a teenager back in the sixties , saw this and thought it would be a laugh to see how badly they did it. But when they began the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and realize how good a musicianTownsend was back then. A true great song (unlike the absolute dirge youngsters now grow up on now) is only truly musically great in that it can be given a performance like this and magic still shines through.
When you say dirge, do you know that there is a calendar age we reach when all new music is rejected and dismissed. It is somewhere in our 30s. The mind just closes to new musical ideas.
@@TR4zest As a child, as a teenager as with those I grew up with in the 1960s, I enjoyed and listened, BBC Radio Light and sing-songs with my Cockney family of music going back to the 1910/20/30s, liked it then and still like it now. My parents and teachers (some who had been WW2) who would be in charge of our school Youth club also enjoyed the Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. I later in life becoming a teacher would often play my 1960/70s pop music to pupils in the coach and school bus on day trips out, in the 1980/90s and on asking them what to play would choose my music as oppose theirs. Worldwide in terms of sales and concerts it is mainly, i.e. old artists of my time STILL making a great deal of money. Yes Taylor Swift is doing so, but as with Ariana Grande she too will soon be forgotten unlike the Beatles, Stones and Led Zeppelin music. On here, are more and more young RUclipsrs expressing and showing disbelief in how good my music was - FACT!
Second point - your comment 'new music' is a premise that what is produced to day, is music which more and more is certainly not, i.e. regurgitated sampled and computer generated NOISE where (and knowing people in the music industry) cannot read or understand the most basic components of music i.e. tempo, chords etc.
I could go for ages destroying your INANE comment in a similar vein but as your comment shows such complete IGNORANCE and understanding, it would be lost on you, thus - I will revert to my working class background and simply state as is so much the case now, with what is in all ways the awful DIRGE that young people now have given to them - you are talking a load of BOLLOCKS !!!
Fabulous arrangement
Great version. Seen them do it live too. It reminded me of a great duo from Wales in or around the seventies who used to do it accapella in the folk style. They were Neil Lewis and John Luce, they became Welsh entertainer Max Boyce's backing band. Sorry bout the deviation UOGB keep on keepin' on...... always superb.
Was hoping to hear an actual ukalele cover of the song, but holy shit that was amazing
Me too I wasn't disappointed either.
absolutely brilliant
Saw these guys live and when they sang/played this and it sounded so much better live
wow that sound just put goose bumps on my arms even though it is just a recording! well done!!
AMAZING talent all round.
It is just fantastic! Thank you!!!
_Tommy_ (the original version) is an important part of my youth. And we've lived through sea shanties in the epidemic. And today I discover this, and it honours both ends of its spectrum. I mean, it's funny and all, but it's a lot more than that.
Outstanding, as usual!!!!
I was waiting on the intro played on the ukulele but wasn't disappointed.
Great performance, I was just waiting for the ukuleles to chime in and rock.
Bloody brilliant! So talented.
Another brilliant performance
They sing so well
Now that's a sea shanty !
wonderful, beatiful voices
Fantastic love the singing.
The Pinball Wizard Shanty ! Brilliant.

I haven't watched this video yet... But knowing the song, and knowing how great these guys are... My mind is already blown.
...great harmony..ball,ball,ball,ball.....you nailed it george,..good man
Brilliant!!!
Superb.....beautiful harmonies
RUclips has algorithmically thrown up some random, random stuff that you can't help having a look at. Alot of times I never make it halfway and more often I'm out before the end but this offering has been a thoroughly enjoyable rabbit hole. I just can't believe it never arrived amongst the randomness until now, given that most of my searches are music related. My world is now enhanced by knowing that supremely talented singers and singers can take the humble ukele into musical territory that most would never imagine. Not only that, but they do so with humour and a connection with the audience, in a way that belies the many hours that must have gone into the arrangements and rehearsals. Bravo and thanks!
Wow. Fabulous even without the ukuleles. 👍☮️🎤
Hester looking gorgeous as usual
indeed brilliant
Superb!
I really enjoyed this!

Brilliant stuff. A new fan
Awesome !
Magnifique
I can imagine the motley crue of the HMS Ukel Adie, pirate hunters, amusing themselves with this sea shanty after a long day service to the admiralty in defence if wayward cargo vessels for the EIC, a draft of grog, forlorning the embrace of some raunchy wench whose wiles would wisp the pursors's keys abaft, should he be into that sort if wicked debauchery.
Excellent cover. Thanks for posting.
