Thank you for saving this old engine on the edge. I want one so bad to play with when I retire. Excellent resto on a workhorse in bad shape. I love it!
I realize it is many years later since this video was made but can't say enough good about Hit and Miss Enterprises and Mark's magneto was helpful rebuilding a couple of Briggs magnetos for me. Thanks for uploading.
I have this same engine. It was missing the Sumpter mag but I found one several years ago. The Engine is complete but the rings apparently are stuck because it has no compression and the carb needs to be rebuilt. You did an excellent rebuild.
Ben Parker If you have trouble with the Sumter magneto I used Marks magneto and he did a wonderful job of restoring mine. New piston rings and valves can be obtained from hit and miss enterprises what I would suggest is to pull the piston out check the rings pull the head check the valves hone the cylinder slap it all back together and you should have compression. First rate job! It's funny that a lot of people don't know what these engines are. Around where I live it's probably about one in fifty that do. I was only made aware of them a few years ago, and now I own a 1920 "Z". Mine is a throttle governed 1&1/2 horse which was stuck when I bought it (of course). also it was missing the magneto and carb. The owner was going to scrap it, but decided to put it on CL in case some fool wanted to buy it for $200. I'm glad he did! It runs great now, and I can't wait to drag it around to a few shows this year.
Great running engine I also have an engine like your, can you tell me how to set the cylinder Oiler so it gets the correct amount of oil on the piston and cylinder as well as the wrist pin, thanks so much for your video
I'm working on getting parts to a 2hp dishpan. I have the type R Magneato and I am slowly getting the rest of the parts to rebuild it. I still have to get gaskets and a few other parts for the carburetor and a gas tank I would like to get the proper base for it and the fuel tank then fabricate a cart for it. But great job on the restore what type and what color paint did you use.
John Hicks Hey Jon I just want to make a comment on my Fairbanks Morse if you do not subscribe to gas engine magazine you should do so it is a very good source of parts references places to get things by things trade things. The other thing is there is a place called hit and miss Enterprises they are very good for parts for all kinds of antique gas engines and for magneto work I highly recommend Marks magneto they are both advertised in gas engine magazine and you can also find them online the color that I used is a 1968 912 Porsche green I had my Porsche repainted and I had a quart of paint left over and guess where the paint went. Craig Stevens

@@craigstevens9278 thanks I don't subscribe to gas engine magazine I might look into it. I have looked at hit and miss Enterprises there are a few things I will purchase from them as well.
Can you tell me where you got parts for the carb rebuild if you has to do so,I have a 1918 which is stuck I’m trying to free it up and hope to make it work, also where could I get a new fuel tank did you have to get a new one also? Thanks for any help on these matters
Daniel, all of the parts that I needed including a new fuel tank where purchased from Hit or Miss Enterprises. If you need work on the magneto I highly recommend Marks Magneto. Hope this helps any other questions please call Craig Stevens 818-340-7959
Terry Breen The piston and cylinder are lubricated by the drip oiler which is above the water chest. Some pistons have an oil hole drilled directly above the wrist pin which allows oil to seep down this hole and wet the wrist pin.
Very nice. I'm working on a 1917. Also eff OSHA if they can't take a joke. Nice machining by the way. Edit: mine is an igniter engine with the side mixer same as yours, however it would have had a gear driven magneto, not an oscillating mag. What year did they change or was this an option over several years?
Good evening, my name is jonatan abratte. I am a teacher in a technical school in Argentina. I have a Fairbanks Morse Model Z engine that is sitting dead. Searching for information on the engine on the internet on how to start it, photos and videos of his of these engines appeared. Do you know anything about the mechanics of these engines? I would like to be able to start up the one that my institution has, if you want I can send you photos. Sorry for the inconvenience. Kind regards.
I had to color match hunter green in order to touch up lower panels on my 1968 912 Porsche the left over paint was used for the Fairbanks. Want an easy solution ? Buy a can of green Rustolium oil base paint for $12 Keep it simple. Craig
A fantastic restoration. I did notice moving parts appear to be a little on the dry side, at least it appears that way...better too much than too little.
..Do you know what I find amazing? There are actually 3 people that gave you a thumbs down on this engine. I just don't get it.. I think you did a great job.
Thank you for helping my husband Jeff Yenger with an identical engine. He enjoyed your conversation.

Lovely resto job. Is that the first year they made them? Before that the T N and R.
Very nice, I am just starting a overhaul of a Z. How does the wrist pin get lubricant?

nice job, im currently working on a 1918 model same condition as what you started with

Did you clearcoat this paint?
No I did not clearcoat it the paint is from rust oleum oil base hunter green I sprayed two coats that seems sufficient Craig
Can I please ask what colour the paint is that you used on this engine. I'm currently restoring a 2hp model Z. Thanks in advance Adam
