$1200 Factory Shoe VS $4000 Handmade Shoe: Gaziano & Girling Optimum Collection

- Опубликовано: 15 июл 2024
- What could be better than a pair of high end Gaziano & Girling ready-to-wear shoes? Well how about some completely handmade ones!
The question is, does the quality of the shoes justify the big jump in price? Can you really notice that much of a difference between some high end ready-to-wear shoes and the same shoes made completely by hand? We answer all these questions in today's video, as we take a closer look at Gaziano & Girling's new Optimum Collection.
Gaziano & Girling were kind enough to send us the same shoes from both their RTW line, and their new Optimum Collection, for us to be able to do a side-by-side comparison for you.

I now have multiple $1200 shoes I can now never look at. You managed to make me feel poor even after spending over a $1000 on a pair of shoes. Great video Kirby!
😂😂😂
My Allen Edmonds Park Avenues are the best shoe I ever owned (I have 12 pairs of various styles by AE). I love the 6 lace eyelets and the fit. Like most people, a $4000 shoe is out of my range.
This is like looking at macro shots of watch movements/dials to really see the detail and craftsmanship--fantastic!
perfect comment! i totally agree, the love and passion gets finer and finer as the price goes up. we want to see it all!
You guys need to see Forgotten Weapons' video on the H&K G11.
Videos really look amazing with the new cameras you guys have been using now! Your presentation is also even more seamless now Kirby. Cheers!
Thanks so much!
Kirby! This is a great video! I was so skeptical at the beginning, but as you took us through the details - I'll never look at shoes the same way again! Great stuff!
You know you're watching Kirby Allison when a $1200 shoe is the "lesser quality"
I am currently wearing a £17 pair of brown oxfords from Tesco... they're okay ^ ^
Yeah. It’s getting pretty nuts over here. Lol.
Tesco’s finest?? ;)
I own a few pair Saint Crispin’s and they are almost bespoke. They did send me test shoes for almost no extra cost. Beautiful made. Greetings from the Netherlands. I love your videos.
I have a pair also! Great shoes! But increasingly difficult to get here in the United States.
Why didn’t you shine them both equally?
Maybe the difference won’t be so overwhelming..
Also I feel if you would’ve used the ox blood on the RTW and the casual lighter brown on the HM the impact would not be as much..
The fact that you’ve pointed out all the flaws on the G&G RTW, my next pair of ready to wear will be from Stefano Bermer ... hands down much better quality. Thanks Mr Alison for helping me choose the best possible shoes for my hard earned money.
Cheers !
Mr. Allison: please take a look at your shirt sizing. I noticed the fabric rolling and feel a more relaxed fit may be in order. Your jacket is perfectly fitted, good on that!
Beautiful shoes by G&G! However, one might be better off spending $4000 on that with Yohei or Hiro Yanagimachi for a bespoke shoe instead

I pay 25 American dollars for 1 pair of shoes made by leather or 1 pair of sandals made by leather and with rotation my 9 pairs since 2017 work well .my pirate plastic Birkenstock sandals here in Mexico cost me 9 dollars for the pair...and I have 4 pairs...
@@SOLENOID4 Very wise.. But one's $4k can be worth $25 to them as well.
sorry to be extremely frank, I do not wish to offend anyone but... this feels like a commercial. In innumerable videos you sold GG MTO like the best of the best and now you subtly downgrade them in order to let this new one shine better. For instance you never said in all your videos before that the MTO were lasted on a plastic last... now you do, in order to highlight the difference with this one. The heel block before was on the MTO " beautifully shaped, bespoke quality, slightly pitched.... " now it is described as commonplace, very good but commonplace, and the new one? Beautifully pitched, etc. I do enjoy your videos, but I am sorry to say this looks like a sale, it looks like you were asked to pitch it this way.
It’s all relative, I suppose! I was a little shocked by the difference between RTW and Optimim, which is why I asked Tony to send me one of each shoe in the same model - so they could be compared against each other. We aren’t paid (although I wish we were!!) for any of our reviews.
@@kirbyallison sure, that is OK. Although, since your reply seems carefully worded.... you are not paid for the singular review, and nobody is accusing you of not being honest. But do they sponsor your website in anyway? Generally, therefore nonpaying in any way for the singular review. I cannot help but feeling a little let down by this latest video.Firstly the MTO costs 1850$, not 1200. Secondly before the MTO were " taken from the same leather as bespoke " now " it is the same leather but bespoke and Optimum get the best part ". So it is and it is not the same leather Kirby... just like tenderloin and chuck are the same beef quality if they came from the same Kobe animal, but they are not " the same beef " in your mouth. I took your videos on MTO not thinking I was speaking to a lawyer. Anyway, the new shoes look good.
Federico Rossi Nice observation there! I’ve noticed it. They are salesperson after all.
Kirby is making a comparison. Every comparison depends on a reference point, and he chose a very nice one just to highlight the qualities of the other.
@@chesterrosa6288 this makes no sense. If you say something is hand made on the premises layer by layer this is not a comparison but a quality statement. If the same thing is bought already done somewhere else the first statement is not " off taste ", it is just false.
The significant difference in the shape between the standard shoe and the Optimo model, is the reason, why I wouldn't buy the Optimo model. The fit would be fundamentally different for me and knowing what size I have with their standard shoes, will not tell me anything about the fit of the optimo model. I have learned the hard way and know for myself, that a shoe with that much last definition should only be ordered bespoke, with fittings etc.. Your comparison Kirby, answered all my questions. Thanks
I just got my second pair of G&G shoes today and I absolutely love them.
Beautiful shoes, no question about it. But £2750 or $4000 for a pair of non-bespoke shoes is a bit much. More so when Cleverly bespoke starts at £3800 and Stefano Bemer MTO for their handmade range is $1900. Looking at those Bemer shoes online, the shaping, arch definition and finishing is exceptional. So apart from a preference for a G&G style, what more do we get for an extra $2000?
Owning a pair of Stefano Bemer MTO shoes from their completely handmade line, I have to say the fine details are spectacular in much the same way as these Optimum line ones. Despite value for money being a somewhat mute point considering most people dont spend more than a hundred pounds on shoes, I feel it would be hard to justify this G&G line, when others can produce damn near identical quality for half the price.
incredible video!
Thanks a lot!
i was researching on youtube for my first GG purchase. saw the shoe snob video and this one. great stuff! i bought a pair of paolo scafora instead.
I have three pairs of custom bespoke shoes from Cleverley. They are 22 years old and still look good.
Beautiful!!!
Great 👍. I am waiting for my second pair. This optimum MTO could be done for the third pair.
Wow your special..! Are you better than everyone at everything?
IMO, G&G Optimum will have tough competition against Yohei Fukuda RTW, those are also hand-made to bespoke level details, but at around 2 to 3k price range. I had seen one pair of Yohei Fukuda RTW at The Armoury HK, it was really gorgeous like the G&G Optimum you showed today.
Yohei does exceptional work and I’m certain G&G had them in mind when designing this shoe.
Dear Kirby, I understand. Here @, your video, at 16.00 you say for instance that the heel in a MTO is constructed layer by layer. Beautiful, pitched, artisanal etc... In the description of the new Optimum collection you say that in the MTO the heels are bought in a predone block and just glued and in the Optimum they are constructed layer by layer etc... They do look better, but now what is it? Did they worsen the quality of their MTO to make this new line shine, were you wrong in the first video, in the second? There are only tese three options as you see, I am sure. Maybe you could clarify this with them, and us, once in a denote way. Thanks
I know you work with Gaziano and Girling a lot. Would you mind asking them about how many more hours it takes to do full bespoke?
How does this compare to the Stefano Bemer Classica collection in term of finishing?
Both are beautiful shoes, GG is my personal favorite shoe brand. I hope GG doesn't drop the quality of their factory made shoes. The heels on my shoes look identical to the MTO handmade and they are factory from 3-2 years ago. Also the last shape is being affected because the GG shoe trees are not in the factory model, looks like the Kirby Allison shoe trees. Can't wait to see the new place Kirby!

Seems like the G & G MTO (non-Optimum) line that was up until this Spring praised by Kirby as exceptional craftsmanship with bespoke quality leather using only the finest parts of the hide, now with the introduction of the Optimum line suddenly have been downgraded to plain factory made shoes with lesser quality cut leather with minor defects. Anyone else who finds this change less than credible?
Paying 1200$ for a gyw shoe is madness anyway. If you pay this much for rtw and it's not handwelted you're making a mistake imo.
I felt I overspent on my $140 shoes. I guess that makes me a pauper! 😂
And have to love that 20 minute "high level" talk about two pairs of shoes. 😎
I tend to spend 100-200$ on shoes. That's just my budget. I know I'm not getting too notch quality, nor do I expect it.
Doesn’t the difference of looks of the leather come from different finishes? Not saying it’s not top quality, but I don’t think that can make such a difference.
I asked this exact question! There is no question that the leather receives some additional polishing. But it is the same leather used on their RTW shoes. The primary difference is that only the best selections of the hides are used for the Optimum and bespoke, which apparently provides a pretty big difference.
The toe box is SO narrow. That is the widest part of my foot.
Good job
Those shoes look even better in person.
I honestly do not understand people who want the fine details of bespoke shoes but do not want to go bespoke!
I do. In some parts of the world true bespoke is hard to access (many cities in the US) so obtaining bespoke typically means travelling a great distance maybe even travelling overseas to a maker for measurements. So while the maker may charge 7 grand, by the time you add in the flight cost, hotel, other costs of travel, the bespoke pair may really cost 12-15 grand. Or that guy can settle for these and get the same thing minus the in person measuring for 4000? Seems like a no brainer
I posted about this in a response to a previous common. It’s easy to take for granted access to bespoke makers for those that live in London or cities to which these makers travel.
@@BLdontM i’m in the same boat as you regarding bespoke. The time and hassle that it takes to finally get the product is enormous, even though i like the process it doesn’t make sense for me, and when you factor in the added costs like you mentioned (flights, taxis, hotels and etc..) it’s super expensive and that’s the reality unless you live in the town of the maker or they travel close to you! For example, I have comissioned a jacket at a prestigious Savile Row tailor in February 2020 and i still haven’t even scheduled my first fitting (and i’m in Europe) and with the travel costs for the next trips it’ll add a lot on top of what i paid! For bespoke jackets i’m willing to go through this but not for bespoke shoes, i discovered rtw models that fit me well or if I decide to go mto i’ll do it but no bespoke for me!
If these were say £2000 I could understand but they are only a little less than cleverley bespoke who are one of the most reputable and best makers, I really can’t understand why anyone would pay that kind of price for these, and if someone is happy with the G&G RTW just get the ready to wear which is very nice. I really like G&G but I don’t think this price is reasonable, if anything it makes me appreciate their RTW more (I’ve alway felt they were significantly better than Edward Green).
Hi Kirby, why do you keep on saying the MTO are 1200$ They are nowadays 1290 pounds, at 1,41 $ per pound it makes 1820. There is a difference right there
Sorry - must have been a mistake. You are correct. $1200 USD is for the RTW stuff. But it’s effectively the same shoe as their MTO (factory made, same process), just less finishing options.
QUALITY CHANNEL!
thank you!
After watching this comparison, wondering how a 600.00 pair of Carmina compares to a 1200.00 factory Gaziano & Girling. I can appreciate the Craftsmanship of the 4000.00 shoes. However, the 1200.00 G&Gs don’t seem worth the extra cost over a brand like Carmina.
We have that video already! ruclips.net/video/uKFO_x8C2ek/видео.html
Started my first pair of single monks with the Optimum Program, thank you for highlighting.
Would someone in the market for $10,000 full bespoke shoes really be prepared to wait upwards of a year?
The heel block was described, by Mr.Gaziano, in the factory tour video as made by hand. I think you are misrepresenting the factory made product here by saying it’s applied in a prefabricated fashion.
This really feels like an advertisement (it is). Unfortunately I’m unconvinced, I’d much rather 3 pairs of the factory made shoes than one of those. The most significant difference seems to be the polishing and finishing, which is something you could pay someone to do for not that much. These make very little sense to me. If you want to spend that much on a shoe, go bespoke...
Here here! Quoting my videos better than I am! I’ll ask Tony and clarify.
Video starts at 5:30
I used to be impressed by $7,000 shoes. Then I saw the price of lumber. Lol
Shoot no kidding, my wife and I were looking at building our first home this year and decided to wait for next summer
Haha. No kidding! We’re building out a new office. Everything is too expensive.
Here's a very easy way to offset all these comments about the differences between the MTO and Bespoke blah blah blah. While G&G are beautiful, I can easily name a number of Japanese and Italian makers that surpass G&G for less than $4k! I'm speaking of MTO that easily match Gaziano's bespoke. Kirby is very good at selling but he has his loyalties. It's obvious from the repetitive brands or makers he pushes on his videos. I have a pair from a Japanese master that Gaziano can only wish to replicate or any other for that matter. Even makers like Saint Crispins are very nice very high end RTW but not 'serious' handmade handwelted shoes of the highest caliber. Just an opinion of a man that's been an upscale shoe whore for more than 35 years.
Very beautiful but you pay a lot to cover higher uk labor costs. Saint Crispins, Stefano Bemer (Tradizione line (USD 1,990)) and Yohei Fukuda (USD 2,400) are significantly cheaper for more or less the same level of make.
Perhaps a bit less refined with Saint Crispins but nothing to cry home about. Price about USD 1,600 on average and you can modify the last to fit your foot better.
I got my last pair of shoes in the lost and found at Costco, I may be watching the wrong channel.
Why am I watching this? I know I'm never gonna pay $4000 for shoes.
I just watched this whole video and thought the same. Not even the $1,200 either. Definitely do notice and appreciate the differences, but I cannot imagine being so fabulously well off that a 4k shoe would ever be on my radar.
Lovely shoes, but I am in the UK and I get handwelted shoes, with a very similar MTM finish in french leather for a tenth of the price. Its all about where to go :)
Handwelted UK made shoes for $700?
Doubtful... maybe if you’re friends w a maker and own your own last...
@@kirbyallison it’s called Vass, you know them Kirby
Tonight I'm playing a RUclips drinking game on zoom with friends across the country. "Bespoke" will be word I choose..
Zoom me in. I normally do it on Saturdays. But Thursday’s are good also.
Unless you are a royalty or a billionaire who doesn't need to walk anywhere, wearing anything above 1000K no matter high the quality of leather or craftsmanship, is completely stupid.....these shoes are pieces of art for sure, but let's not forget that we are talking about something you put on your feet.....
interesting. i'm a stupid beginner, but one reason that I (unforttunately for my finances) like spending on nice boots is precisely because i love walking around on them. On some level, for me at least, even spending $300 on shoes is 'stupid'. but i love them.
@@geneschwartz5422 I live in a city that it be would a total shame to wear a very expensive pair of shoes, boots or whatever because of tragic conditions of sidewalks etc...but even in countries and cities with way better infrastructures, wearing a 1000+ pair is nonsense...
Hey Kirby! Do you know of anyone who buys shoes but doesn't wear them? At this high level of craftsmanship, they really are more like works of sculture and art, and not something you would want to wear down by wearing.
You could put them in a gallery exhibition!
Tempting... I always hesitate to wear mine for the first time. I’m still staring at my most resent pair of Dominic Casey shoes..
Looks like the whole Optimum pair was mirror shined for this demonstration. Would you guys agree?
This is how it leaves the workshop. Gaziano doesn’t have the time to spend this level of time in finishing for their RTW shoes. If you were to order a pair of Optimim shoes, this is how they would be delivered.
I'm too smooth-brained for a pair of shoes like this. I'd wear them for a whopping thirty seconds before stumbling and scuffing them on something.
I would rather go bespoke. This feels like an option where G&G is cashing in. By the way at 16,25 you just said the heel block in the MTO is factory made. Very many times you said it was assembled by hand, again " beautifully pitched, bespoke quality " etc
Well, G&G receives heel blocks (my understanding) that are finished by hand at the factory (certainly more finishing than other RTW). But the Optimim and Bespoke stuff is literally built layer by layer.
You raise a very interesting point. There is still a large pride difference (about 50% more expensive) and, more significantly for some, time difference. One of the largest barriers for many is simply coordinating seeing a bespoke maker. It can be very difficult. And especially with the current status of international travel, even more difficult. And there are some people who are just simply happy with the RTW fits.
I believe you should have used the exact same horma
Kirby is teaching us about shoes and how they are crafted. This is an education. We can aspire to one day buy these shoes but in the meantime we'll lean what makes them special.
Chinese shoemaker Acme makes the same shoes to the exact same high standards for $1500! Why to spend $4000? I am a fan of Tony since he was at Edward Green, but think he needs to reassess his prices. The market has dramatically changed over the last couple of years. If the high end British, French and Italian shoemakers do not become more agile and resilient to stay competitive, the up-and-coming Chinese shoemakers will eat their lunch in a few years from now
I’ve seen some of these shoes, and I can say that they are no where close to being the same. The Chinese are able to hit the technical specs, but everything else is off.
I think in the value to price range of shoes you’d be hard pressed to beat the shoes coming from Mallorca Spain at the moment. Otherwise it is very difficult to see the quality of the shoes unless you are examining them in your hands or possibly in the lighter coloured leathers where the higher grade leathers might absorb the dyes better.
@@kirbyallison correct but that is why I said “in a few years from now”
If I can't decide about the quality which one is better I can judge by the price.
Fair enough but I’d rather buy 3 pairs of factory G&G’s to one pair of optimums. A £1200 shoe is still a quality shoe and remember you can get 3 of them.
While the details on the bespoke shoes are better, the overall shape of the standard pair looks nicer to me. The bespoke one is 'flatter' and wider, while the standard one is narrower and 'higher'
There will be a lot of wealth created if someone can work out a way to automate the bespoke production process to a level that takes the bespoke price down to (perhaps) the sub $2,000 level...
Wau, that difference is enormous. Previously i thought how great a GG shoes are for RTW, now it’s looking like poor cousin of “the real shoe”.
I thought the same thing. Makes me wonder if they’ve actually downgraded quality of their RTW line to make room for optimum line. Too lazy to go back and look at the old videos, but these RTW do look significantly less refined than I used to think
@@groznoy I don’t think so. The quality is good, i think it’s just that optimo is more pronounce than a regular pair and it’s more curved and polished.
I remember when I thought $1,000 was a lot for shoes or hell even $4,000 then I started collecting watches. Don't do that lol

I took your videos on MTO not thinking I was speaking to a lawyer. Anyway, the new shoes look good.
Federico - you seem really bent on being antagonistic here. The shoes are cut from the same hide of leather. It’s as simple as that. I’m merely passing on what I know. You beef analogy isn’t exactly appropriate. It’s more like both being cut from the tenderloin... but the Optimum being cut from the choice, center part. Anyway.... by all means, take your own opinion. I’m not trying to tell you how to think.
Although the craftsmanship of the shoe is exceptional, to me it doesn’t entirely make sense to spend $4000 on an MTO shoe when, if you have the patience to save an additional $1000, you can purchase a pure bespoke G&G made to both your specifications and the nuances of your feet. That’s just me though.
I think the marginal cost of bespoke vs Optimim is closer to $2000, but, yes. You have a point. Which is why I hit on how long bespoke can take. I’m not advocating one over the other. Really a matter of personal constraints and preferences.
.
Kirby isn't that you are comparing fiddleneck shoes with a regular shoe and coz of the that the last definition is more pronounced?
Not really, but the bespoke pair have the waist of the insole pared back further from the edge to achieve a slimmer waist and more curve there. you can clearly see a lot more definition elsewhere though. Its all drafted a lot tighter.
Hey, it’s somewhat dishonest showing the regular gg with a standard tree and the optimum gg with the lasted tree
They didn’t send us G&G trees... and I didn’t want to compare them with no trees at all...
A $4000 pair of shoes should have power windows, cruise control, and air conditioning.
….and pick-up the kids from daycare
"I cannot tell you how beautiful this shoe is" well, to some eyes I suppose, but to me they're drug boss style, quite ghastly, I would never be seen in them. And how long do they last? My Trickers have been going for decades, resoled 3 times, no prob.
Trickers are in a different league. Just picked up my first pair of Stows in chestnut and they are really incredible and robust. Trickers and GG are for different audiences though.
Great review! Can you get your friends at JL to send you a pair of Madison 21s or the LA 21s to review? The concept is the same as the Optimum, fully bespoke level shoes made on a RTW last. JL only made 21 pairs of each pricing them at $5,000. I'd like to get your views on them and maybe even compare them to the Optimum. Thanks!
Most importantly it loves the foot

You think Kirby is an alpha male?
Kirby, no need to be antagonistic... there is a lot to learn from you. You did not answer though on the question whether, whilst NOT paying for reviews, these producers sponsor your company in general. Given the exposure you give them it would be understandable, I do not see why these kind of advertising should come free.
No they do not sponsor the company at all either. This one came about because during the catch up with Tony during the London reopening video, he mentioned the Optimum collection. So I asked if he would send one of each to compare. That's it. No financial incentive, no reimbursement or free gifts... Just a video to highlight exceptional craftsmanship.
