  • Ranveer Singh-starrer 83 is based on India's 1983 World Cup win. While speaking to India Today Consulting Editor Rajdeep Sardesai, on Stars of 83 - a special show, Ranveer was seen in tears at the mere thought of being a part of a film that presents India's historical win on celluloid. The Kabir Khan film is set to release on December 24, but the reviews are out - and phenomenal is the word! Along with the star cast of the film, cricketers like Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Syed Kirmali, K Srikkanth, Kirti Azad and Sandeep Patil, those who made the 1983 World Cup win possible, were also part of the special show.

It’s very disappointing to see no one gave any credit to Roger Binny. He got the highest number of wickets for a Bowler from any team in that World Cup - if I recall correctly it was 16 wickets. This is the problem with Media. A person who keeps quiet gets ignored totally. While I really did enjoy this segment it’s very disheartening to see this attitude prevail. Even Sunil Valson gets a mention but no credit attributed to the highest number of wickets , which is a big contribution to india coming to the finals in the World Cup.

I still remember vividly when I watched the WC'83 finals on B&W TV. When India was 183, I was so disappointed that Indian did not reach at least 200. While watching Sandhu take the wicket of Greenidge, my opes came back till Vivian Richards stepped into the crease and he started scoring quick rune. Suddenly, the Doordarshan news came on for about 30 minutes!! I still decided to watch half fearing that Richards would have won the match single-handedly for WI by then and to my utter surprise, when the live telecast resumed, Richards was already out!! Then it was downhill for the WI after that. I will never forget this triumph ever and even if Team India won the WC2011, India were not underdogs then. We were world-beaters already under MS Dhoni.
Team India 1983 were literal underdogs then and despite losing all 3 warm-up matches and yet, going on to win WC '83 itself is a "fairy tale come true". Thanks so much, Kapil's devils!!

When we didn't have 24x7 news media, we had better society and people. These cricketers represent those amazing times. The host represents the cancer since then.

This victory is etched in our minds forever. However the anchor Rajdeep Sardesai was very demeaning to some of these legends. There was no reason to keep harping on before 6 pm and after 6 pm. Mentioning it once is one thing but to keep asking this question to so many legends was too petty and disgraceful. Asking Balwinder Singh Sandhu whether his inswinging deliver was intended to be inswinger or out swinger was too offensive a question to be asked. This was probably the ball of the tournament. Balwinder Singh Sandhu was gracious to respond politely. But he was clearly taken aback. Need to be careful with the choice of questions. Being a host does not give anyone the freedom to be reckless

I was in Tiruchy employed in BHEL in 83.there was no TV.heard commentary on radio.watched the movie at Multiplex in mysore with my wife.the speciality of this movie was it presented visuals of India Zimbabwe match which was not telecast due to BBC strike that day.Kapil with his monumental 175. rescues India from a precarious 17/5.Hats off to Kabir Khan and all actors for their stupendous effort in recreating the memorable moment of 1983.
