I agree, the Genesys system of dice gives players way more control over the outcome of their action rather than blindly relying on the "number they got", as even a failure can result in a boon for another player or change the situation of battle.

I still play the old early 90s d6 West End Games version of Star Wars. Spelljammer was one of my favourite D&D setting in AD&D so eagerly awaiting 5e.

yessssss. i've been thinking of running an air combat heavy campaign as my first attempt at DM-ing. i feel like some of the mechanics are similar. massive air ships with dragon rider escorts; boarding actions and broadsides, hot landing zones and heavy flak, strafing passes and bombing runs...and then there are the missions. insertion. extraction. interdiction. reconnaissance.
i hope i'm not biting off more than i can chew.

I've got a session zero with my players next week to discuss the space setting for our next campaign! We're using a 5e setting called Dark Matter that was kickstarted last year and that is no relation to previous properties with that name.
I'm really excited about it - love the setting, which pulls concepts in from most well-known sci-fi universes. Laser swords are basically light sabers, orcs are basically Klingons, there are Mass Effect style gates, a race of Egyptian-themed bird headed people that remind you of Stargate, and the feel of the setting is extremely Firefly. Lots of unique stuff too, but I think they did a great job of balancing what they knew people would wish was in there from their favorites with inventing their own stuff, which I hope helps with some of the denseness of coming to grips with a new setting and all the sci-fi trappings you mentioned. An example of a thing that's not from a show is that most spaceships use magical engines, but there are Dead Magic Zones in space, mostly caused by extremely big magical explosions. Fly into one, and you may not be coming out.

I hope you continue to talk more about different systems. There's so much more out there then D&D and have so much more to give.

I was playing a tech specialist in Star Wars D20 which everyone keeps saying is the weakest class in the game. My brother was game master and decided to try and mess with us at low level by having us encounter Darth Maul on Tatooine just after he fights with Obi Wan. I got second in the initiative but I had a plan so I convinced the sniper to take the surprise round to aim and get his +2. And then I charged him! The 2 Jedi in our party ran after me concerned for my safety. As we get to him he pulls out his double light saber. I switch my pistol to stun and attack him.
Me - he needs to make a wisdom save.
Him - He’s Darth Maul, of course he makes it.
Me - Cool, he’s still stunned for one round though.
Him, What does that do again?
I read him the him the effect of being stunned and his jaw drops when I get to the part about dropping any weapons and items he was holding. I picked up his light saber and walked back to the ship while the rest of the party took him into custody. He then remembered that I pretty much have full control of the ship when Maul tried to escape later and I tracked him on cameras slamming bulkheads shut in his way remotely and launched all the escape pods.
Him - *looking at me, the forever DM* You KNOW he has to escape for continuity reasons… You weren’t supposed to be able to capture him at level 2! Why are you making this so difficult?
    Me - 🤷🏻‍♂️

Go play West End Games Star Wars, it is the best designed RPG for Star Wars that they have come up with. Added bonus, its classless, you customize your character however you want and not by premade guidelines.

I have Amazing Adventures 5E by Troll Lords, it's multigenre. I have ran a 1940's type game and ran the group through Death House from Curse of Strahd. We had a good time. I'm looking at running a Sci-Fi Horror one shot game of it. Got ideas, but having to find a way to adopt the classes to how I believe the characters should go - IE: Space Crews - Captain, Grease Monkey, etc.

Not sure if you have heard of Traveller but it's a good system almost as old as d&d. New to it myself but it's flexible enough to go from Stars Trek to Starship Troopers.
