    This video was so helpful because I will be studying abroad in Santo Domingo for 4 months. It's better to hear from native people from the US because you know how it is here and can make good comparisons. At the end of your video you said that you can talk for hours/days, well post another video with some more of your experiences in the DR so I can know ! lol

      Im all of a sudden interested in going to DR.
      Cape town is getting way too boring for me and I Dont want to do the typical travel root such as america, Europe etc. Damn, they remind me so much of my people ( coloureds).
      .by the way, the term coloured isn't derogatory at all, its neutral in southern Africa

      Giamo Jackson Carter how can a black women date someone in the DR?

    • @GiamoJacksonCarter
      @GiamoJacksonCarter  9 лет назад

      latoya sims Depends . But if you want to date a Dominican man then you should start taking Spanish lessons! Or maybe dance lessons. Dancing bachata in a bar or club is pretty common and simple intro.

    The inverter is connected to car batteries. It charges them when the power is on and when the lights go out it converts the DC current from the batteries to AC 110v

  • @qolspony
    @qolspony 8 лет назад +1

    First of all, I like your southern accents. Anyway, if you can afford it and DR can accept imports this is what you can get: Solar Panels provide electricity when the sun is out and if you purchase enough wattage when it is cloudy. You can store your electricity using 12 volt batteries or 2 or more 6 volt golf cart batteries. You have to pair the 6 volts in a certain way so that you don't electrocute yourself. There are websites that teaches you how to do this. The good thing about 12 volts it is easier to pair more than one battery. Negative across and positive across. But 12 volts AGMs are very expensive. 6 volts are much cheaper and they last a little longer if you maintain them. However, their recharge time is higher, which means you don't get as much charge time per full charge. But it is still worth the investment. You will need a 12 volt inverter to convert DC to power your AC devices. Also, you can save electricity by cooking doing the day using a solar oven or parabolic cooker. A solar oven cooks food slowly, which a parabolic cooker is like a frying pan or boiler. A thermal cooker can keep food warm for several hours once the sun goes down. They offer all of this on ebay at a reasonable cost.

    Lets get one thing clear. YES, DR is a third world country, however, you just have to learn how to live over there. I was born and raised in DR, came to the U.S at the age of 13. The electricity and water do not go everyday, it does have to deal of where you live. If you live in a really bad area where people don't pay their bills, the light and water will go off. The costumer service in DR is amazing. One thing which I totally forgot how to do in USA Is to say"hello" when I first get into a place. The people are lovable. Costumer service is amazing over there, once they see you they always say "saludos, en que te puedo ayudar?"
    meaning" hey, how may I help you today"
    You guys seem pretty young and pretty americanized.

    • @GiamoJacksonCarter
      @GiamoJacksonCarter  6 лет назад

      Hmm good observation. We were younger. And we are both americans hence "amercanized"

    Assuming you guys are still there, it's been over a year now. So now that you've learned more, do you plan on doing a more informed updated video? Also, what of rent, utilities, day-to-day cost of living, food, take-out, etc. I know the exchange rate (USD) is very favorable, but how far will American dollars get you? In countries like Japan, the rate is favorable, but things are expensive.

    Have you people noticed that they used 10% of the video length to talk about good things and almost 9 minutes to talk about the "realities" which are the bad things about the country? Is this the reason why most tourists (Not only gringos but also other Latin Americans) just go to Punta Cana and they do not leave their 5 start resorts to visit other small towns?

    I think that u guys have d oportunity of living a great exerience. Yes DR is beautiful, people are wonderful, friendly and talktative and unfortunately theres other types of realities that every third world country have. On the other hand is so common not to have running water, we so use to not having electricity 24/7 things that american people take for granted. Education there is one of d best. Im still amazed that some americans can not name d continents and dont know how many continents theres in d world.

      I agree with you. Anyone from the USA should visit abroad specially Latin American.Hopefully, any cultural exchanges would help some people to be more empathetic to the immigration issues our nation is facing. Anyway, Giamo's videos of DR shows the good, the bad, and the shocking aspects of someone immersing in a totally different culture. I appreciate your honesty.

      I can't lie I did see a huge tarantula at night one time just crawling around on the road. But in general spiders aren't that big of a deal in the DR if you live in a decent spot. Yes, there are places to take spanish classes. I know Santo Domingo has language schools.

      Antonio Johnson ---->There are BLACK TARANTULAS everywhere here in the DR. I am a woman and I live alone in my apartment, and in 2 months there have been 7 or 8 HUGE black tarantulas inside my apartment due to the fact that I don't have SCREENS. The tarantulas are not aggressive, Antonio. I just kill them with a broom and clean up. You must overcome your fear of spiders though. Read about them and little by little you will see your fear disappear. Blessings.

    • @GiamoJacksonCarter
      @GiamoJacksonCarter  10 лет назад +1

      The education is good, but not great. My brother went to a private high school his freshmen year in the states and did ok/poor grade wise, but now he is at an bilingual school in Santo Domingo and he's getting all A's. So, most of the high schools are good, but not the most challenging. At the university level from what I've heard there are pretty good, but I really can't speak on that.
      The best internet providers are Claro and Orange. The internet works fine as long as you have electricity. One town I lived in named San Isidro had great internet for like ten hours a day.

    Is it hard to live there? i mean its necessary to have citizenship, if yes how hard is to get one?

    • @GiamoJacksonCarter
      @GiamoJacksonCarter  10 лет назад +2

      No, it's relatively cheap. For example the apartment my family leaves in now is $600 a month for three bedrooms and two bathrooms. I calculated the other monthly costs like electricity, gas, groceries, internet and what not and it's about $250 for all of that. And no they are not that strict about citizenship.

      Ant Wilson Yeah, my Spanish has improved since i've been here. I think the DR is a good place to learn because people like to talk a lot here.

      Giamo Jackson Carter I'm Dominican, half anyway, been there a bunch of times, but I don't think it's the best place to learn Spanish. We are mad ghetto with our Spanish, which makes it colorful, but it's difficult to understand outside of Caribbean based Spanish-speaking cultures. However, I will say, it's pretty fucking awesome that you guys are thinking outside of the box and exploring the world. Much love from New York, via Dominican Republic, Mao Valverde.
