    I viewed so many videos to make a Roman Shades for my bathrooms, but I hadn't viewed yours. I used a fabric panel with a soaring eagle as my windows are 26 inches x 40 inches. The panel was 24 x 44. I used matching fabric on the sides to make the panel wider and the top/bottom for my hems. I also used the multilayer insulating fabric instead of a liner. First one I ever made. I didn't use dowels and mine was an inside mount. I am happy with the result but see areas to improve on. Nice idea on managing the cords. I may try that on the next one instead of a cleat.

    Love your detailed instructions which were linked from a sewing website. Fifteen years ago I made 5 insulated Roman shades for our renovated family room. Same idea with using insulated lining. But I love watching you do this on You Tube. It makes it far easier to follow directions! Thanks, and they look amazing!

    Love your video!
    To extend the dowels, consider putting the dowel pieces to be extended in a vise and drill a hole in the center of the dowel, keeping the hole straight ( if you or a friend has a drill press this will be easier) about 3/4 inch into it with a drill bit that is the size of a wooden kebob skewer (you can tape the bit to know when to stop). Cut a 1.5 inch piece of skewer and put glue on it and dowels, put skewer into one dowel and then put other onto it. Tite Bond 2 Wood glue is my favorite.

    You did a perfect job! Thinking about skipping the dowel rods though. My project has 3 small windows that are less than 2 ft wide. The rings should be enough for my needs. You explain things very well. These tips along with my shade making book should yield pleasant results. Thanks for sharing.

      So you wouldn’t actually need the rods? This is the first one I’ve watched. Want to make some but don’t see that well! The strings are intimidating 😬

    Great tutorial. One thing to keep in mind for those who live in places with intense sunlight. Plastic rings break or wear down after a while. Using brass rings increases the lifespan of your Roman blind. I'm surprised your dowels were so short. Most dowels in DIY shops are 48".

    Loved the Roman shade video! I am making it right now ~ have had the fabric for 2 years. You have given me the courage to do it! Hope it turns out as well as yours. Just not sure how much additional length of lining fabric to add to accomodate the dowel pockets!

    Love your style and tutorial!! I also ordered my fabric from spoon flower and I’m so excited and nervous to make my first one. I also have questions on the dimensions... sadly my windows are super wide but short and the largest fabric I could order was 56” (49” window). Gonna give it a whirl tomorrow and see what I come up with. God bless ya sister and keep bein awesome ❤️

    I made this up to point of running the string. I have 3 rows of shade rings and 3 eye hooks at top of board. If I understand, there are separate strings starting from bottom of each row that goes up and across to the eye hook to the left eye hook and down.. The middle strings starts at bottom plastic ring up to middle eye hook and to the left top eye hook and down . The left string starts at bottom up to left eye hook and back down left side. There are 3 separate strings all ending on left bottom side. Is that correct?

    • @AtCharlottesHouse
      @AtCharlottesHouse  4 года назад +1

      Hi! If you need to be able to wash, I'd probably attach to the front of the board with velcro for easy removal?

    Great tutorial. Thanks so much. I'm trying to figure out how far the shades stick out from the window frame...can we get a side view??

    • @AtCharlottesHouse
      @AtCharlottesHouse  4 года назад

      I'm using a 1x2 piece of lumber so they only stick out about 1.5-inches! But you can control this by using a different size piece of wood and a larger L bracket if you want them to come away from the window more.

    Ok I am confused as to the hardware on the top of the shade . I see 4 little things attached to your board but you only show the two on the one end, the pulley n the lock thing. What is on the other end and in the middle?

    • @AtCharlottesHouse
      @AtCharlottesHouse  3 года назад

      There are four eye hooks on the underside of the mount to string the cord through. And then the lock/ pulley on one side.

    When you sew those dowel pockets into the liner fabric, did you account for the roughly 6 inches you’ll be losing in height or do you need to factor that into the measurements? Or does it not matter because the front fabric is larger? Great tutorial!

    • @AtCharlottesHouse
      @AtCharlottesHouse  4 года назад +1

      I left excess fabric in the liner to account for the dowel pockets, but ultimately hemmed both once the shades were mostly assembled!

    I meant the fabric being wider than the liner.

  • @jhunsicker5016
    @jhunsicker5016 2 года назад

    How much wider do you cut the liner than the shade fabric? You mention you intentionally make it wider but don't say how much wider.

    • @scottwalker5459
      @scottwalker5459 Год назад

      I played around with scraps to figure out the width of the liner as well as the wrap on each side. My windows are 36" wide (inside mount). I cut my fabric 4" wider than the opening (2" on each side instead of 5 1/2" on each side) and I cut my blackout fabric 36" wide. That gives me 1" seam allowance and a 1" wrap of the curtain fabric. (36" + 2" + 2" = 40" for the fabric, leaving 1" on each side to wrap and 1" on each side for seam allowance; liner math is 36" - 1" - 1" = 34" + 1" + 1" for seam allowance = 36"). I hope this makes sense?

  • @sheneunderwood4705

    I hope you get back with me soon. I thought I understood your directions but I don’t. I have my fabric laid out ready to cut and then I reread directions and watched the video one more time. Your directions say add 4” to either side. Do you mean a total of 8” or do you mean 2” each side. The video said 5 1/2”. Is that 11” total or 2 3/4 each side. Directions said 10” to length but video said 4” to top and 3” to bottom. That’s only 7”. Please help because I am wasting precious sewing time. Thanks

    • @AtCharlottesHouse
      @AtCharlottesHouse  4 года назад +1

      Sorry! You need numerous cords depending upon how many columns of rings you use. The cords tie to the bottom ring on your shade, run up through the rings and then along the top of the shade to the cord pulley.

  • @KittenBowl1
    @KittenBowl1 3 года назад

    It looks great but you can’t launder this huh? The ones I bought before were removable and can be gently washed. The thin poles come out actually and top is not fixed like that but your design can’t be removed.. It would be great if you can design a Roman shade that is relatively simple to make but also can be cleaned.
