Fun Fact: Tim Curry has said the line "Dreadful darkness, hear my cry. Bring back one who cannot die." is one of his favorite lines of all time. He's a huge Scooby Doo fan and felt like the line was symbolic of how Scooby Doo is so popular, the show will last forever.
I remember hearing that, he also said he would have been in the scooby doo live action film, but turned it down after hearing that scrappy doo would be in it
It's also the line that shows Ben's fate is worse than death. Like Sarah, he now cannot die. As Tim Curry said as another villain, he's "trapped in dimensional limbo". And, with the book gone, there is literally no hope for him to be freed. He's doomed to remain trapped with Sarah, unable to die, for all eternity
"Them mixing up glasses is pretty a-dork-able" Eh I still think Velma & Johnny Bravos was better. "My glasses! I can't see without my glasses!" "My glasses! I can't be seen without my glasses!"
@@legendaryscarletlunala7927 My favorite Scooby-doo crossover is the one with Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, when Shaggy and Scooby were busted for drug possession.
it’s a similar appeal that heterosexual woman and gay men have towards the “bad boy” archetype, it’s the attraction towards a person who is a rebel/ person opposite of society that makes them more desired, whether it is towards romantic or sexual desires, that part depends on the person. - Awkward Skeleton, Researcher of the Why is the Internet so Horny? Research Group
"Why are the Hex Girls so popular?" - They look good/attractive. - They are goths. - They play in a rock band. - Female vampire theme. - Their personalities reflect their look.
@@MrAjking808There was a study done by scientist on why people find fictional and animated characters attractive and its because fiction (especially animation) represent the ideal world that we want to live in, and the characters are perfection brought to life. People already create their ideal world in their heads and their ideal love interest and thanks to movies and animation (or any form of art) those fantasies are able to be brought to life. This is not a new thing either and goes way back before movies were invented when people use to draw their fantasies on cave walls, paint pictures, and of course write them in books. I mean look up Jessica Rabbit and tell me you don't find fictional characters attractive.
I remember being super shocked that Ben was the bad guy when I was a kid. He seemed like such a nice guy with a genuine connection with Velma. Definitely one of the first twist villains I remember well
Same here, As Doug pointed out, it’s pretty obvious when you’re an adult and familiar with Curry’s work as the villain in most of his work, that it’ll be revealed he’s evil. But yeah, I too as a kid was duped into thinking there wasn’t anything bad about him.
Same here! I first watched Witch's Ghost when I was about 8 years old, and though I knew who Tim Curry was by that point & recognized that he was voicing Ben, I just figured I was seeing him play the good guy for once, even finding him & Velma to be a cute couple. So when it was revealed that that actually wasn't the case, I was admittedly bummed at first, but got quickly won over by just how much fun he is when he's evil. When he was reciting the spell to release Sarah from the book, I couldn't stop smiling. 🥰
That was such a plot twist for me too. And since I am not a native English speaker, in the version I watched as a kid he was voiced not by a renowed "villain voice actpr" but by a voice actor who voiced as many good guys as bad guys so I couldn't predict
IKR ? He's a well-known horror novelist. Why he was interested in taking over the world ? This motivation is usually used by mad scientist, corrupt politicians, and warmongering military officers. Most evil artists are either egotistical hacks or sexual deviants. So his megalomaniacal behavior doesn't make any sense. Also, that will teach him not to team up with a powerful omicidal maniac from the past for his world conquest. Emperor Pilaf would tell him that.
@@aidanhever3369 Right? What kind of megalomaniacal villain trying to conquer the world gets his start as an artist of all things? *Sweats nervously in World War II.*
You know, in retrospect, the Hex Girls promoting an environmentalism message actually makes sense with their lead singer being a Wiccan. IIRC they feel strongly about living in harmony with nature.
Yup, that’s what I was thinking too. Wiccans honor and respect nature in their practices and despite being associated with “deviltry” and mischief, real Wiccans often believe in balance and peace above all things.
@@gothicMCRgirl Wiccans believe in goofy stuff, just like any denomination. But honestly, they're possibly the most harmless out of the popular theologies.
I'll always remember this movie for it's art style, the Hex Girls, Tim Curry's all-star performance is the villain (as is tradition), and the Monster Turkey!
Late 90s/early 00's Scooby Doo animated movies were the best. They dealt with real antagonists and not people in masks, plus didn't dumb down the audience as the gang actually could get hurt/die but kids could still watch. Also they aged up the gang letting everyone know that these adventures will be more mature. So clearly at this point you might as well do Alien Invaders and Cyber Chase. It is your destiny.
I still liked both of them as well, as they had many good things about them. Though many felt Cyber Chase was the weakest of the 4, I still watched my VHS of it a lot as a kid. Though yeah it did have the least nightmare fuel. Though I appreciate it a bit more now since the Internet and computers have evolved so much in the 20 years since it came out. Only thing that creeped me out as a kid was the virus’s voice and his unnerving smile he gave off LOL
@@ricardohuff8774 True. Plus they did exactly what the live action films failed to do honestly, which was being a continuation of the original series, while aging up the characters and stories for a new audience, while still appealing to the previous generation.
@@thewolfofwallstreet627 agreed I hate they made scrappy a villain in the live action one, he not that bad to me. These four movies still rocks till this day.
I met Jenifer Hale (the voice of Thorn) at a con a few years ago. Talked with her a bit about some of her favorite roles and naturally the Hex Girls came up and how she's still doing Hex Girl stuff even all these years later. She was super nice.
Accidentally digging up her grave I can understand. But using that as a deciding factor to go, "whelp, tourism is slow and we just defiled a womans grave. Let's make it a publicity stunt."
@@jtwatts7990 especially in Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island he chases cats which clearly (to me) shows he knows he's a dog. Plus he never reacted to being called a "mangy mutt", unless he thought it's a human-based term or something?
@@GBmovieluv Even in Zombie Island any time Simone reacts to Scooby with Dog he just like " Dog? Where ". It's when he's doing dog things that he doesn't care
Interesting fact: The Hex Girls took inspiration from horror shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed; and they were somewhat radical for entertainment strictly aimed at children.
While it can basically be boiled down to an environmental message, the origin of the song is talking about all of the five main elements. That's what each point on the Wiccan Star (The Pentagram}. represents. That's because Wicca is an earth based religion, one of nature, respecting it and coexisting with it.
The wiki indicates this, another DTV movie (Legend of the Vampire), a comic and 1 episode from 2 different series respectively. It's certainly more recurring than most, I'd bet. And the designs took an interesting turn too.
@@AndreNitroX How often was Vincent Price a recurring thing? I rarely saw the show where they had the guest stars, though I do recall Phyllis Diller, Don Knotts and the Harlem Globetrotters
Even with my love of Zombie Island, I was 100% a Witch's Ghost kid. This movie was my absolute SHIT growing up. I remember I would just jam out to the Hex Girls song in my bedroom, and it's still a fucking bop. Plus you can't deny in how well they animate the sequence too. Really I think the preference for Witch's Ghost vs Zombie Island all comes down to personal aesthetics. Do you like the chilling, gruesome horror from Zombie Island? Or do you like the quiet spooky fall town with urban legends and a fun supernatural add on from Witch's Ghost? Witch's Ghost appeals to my tastes a bit more, but both are extremely well made films!
It helped the lead singer was really damned cute, and likeable, while the other girls also fit different tastes from different generations. Nothing about them was forced, or awkward... so it was nearly impossible to NOT like them.
This. I love horror but Witch's Ghost just gets everything for me. I love Autumn, I love dark colors and drastic shadows, I love old towns and stories of Wiccans and Witches, even if I'm not a goth. I also love the color scheme of the Hex girls. Like for example when they make a point that the lead's clothes are red, but they're so dark that only the highlights of the clothing and her lipstick are red? I love that trick. Always looks so cool.
Japanese studio Mook Animation in fact, they were contracted by Hanna Barbera for while, they also did the animation for Swat Kats and Real Adventures of Jonny Quest. from what i told, they are sadly no more
"Earth, wind, fire and air!" Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Witch's Ghost attacked. Only the Hex Girls, masters of all music, could stop her, but when the world needed them most, they vanished. A hundred direct-to-videos passed and my brother and I discovered the new Hex Girls: a band of Eco-Goths named Thorn, Dusk, and Luna. And although their music-bending skills are great, they still have a lot to learn before they're ready to save anyone. But I believe the Hex Girls can save the world! "...We may look bad, but we don't care!"
Trivia: Tim Curry was originally going to play the villain in the live action Scooby Doo film but dropped out when he found out Scrappy Doo was in it and as we all know, everyone hates Scrappy Doo.
I don’t hate Scrappy. I hate what they turned him into in the later shows before they dropped him. They made him into too much of a Gary Stu. That being said, I can’t say I blame him for dropping out of that movie.
It was never actually confirmed about that whole Tim Curry thing, it always seemed like a "Well, X told me that..." sort of thing. And for one, I happen to LIKE Scrappy. Besides, you wanna blame someone? Blame the writers.
@@mitchfletcher2386 First time I’m hearing that. I know, right? People wanna blame Scrappy for the writers writing him badly in the later series. I have no idea why.
@@LordMoonshadowGaGa I rewatched it recently and it's still a damn good Scooby Doo film. Some of the comedy had me cracking up and I still think Sarah's design looks legitimately unsettling
The 90's was a great time for us goth and occult kids. We had Lydia from Beetlejuice, Sailor Saturn, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Fi from So Weird, Wednesday and Pugsley Addams, the Midnight Society, R.L. Stine, and it was only a matter of time before the Hex Girls caught our attention.
When I was young I didn't like Scooby Doo very much, but I DID like this and Zombie Island, not only for the better animation but also because the supernatural element being real raised the stakes and made the movies more exciting. I also didn't realize that this was the Hex Girls' genesis, they were so popular I always assumed they were some indy goth band that Hanna Barbara hired to cameo in their movie. Also I'm fairly certain the Wicca has only been recognized as an official religion for roundabouts 50-60 years, it wouldn't have existed in colonial times, though it isn't a stretch for an herbalist or apothecary to be accused of witchcraft by ignorant puritans.
It also wouldn't be strange to find a Chemist fascinated with Wicca, and Alchemy, and try to convince everyone that it was THE genesis of Chemistry. Also, if you want the ancient form of Chemists that used drugs, and promoted drug use, through manipulating ignorant folks... it was called, "Pharmakeia," or "Sorcery." Witchcraft was women practicing "Sorcery," and actively attempting to change the social order through what we now call, "3rd Wave Feminism." The male form was "Warlock." Both were called Witches (male & female), and the actions were called Sorceries (manipulation through hallucinogens. Hex Girls were amazing, and they weren't designed to ram a message down the throats of its viewers, which is why it clicked so easily with people; the Wiccan part was her being edgy through use of Chemistry.... she's a Goth Girl afterall. Edgy is kinda her MO.
Yup, the movie treats wiccanism like it's an ethno-religion even though it was started by a british nudist in the 40s named gardener. Anyone can be a wiccan, it's not a thing you can be 1/16th like native american blood quantum. Wicca borrows heavily from several different and sometimes conflicting pagan religions so is usually only chosen for being the more well known of popular pagan religions.
exact opposite, I LOVED Scooby Doo and I always thought making the spooks real ruined the fun. Human beings are just as dangerous as anything supernatural and the mystery of it not actually being what you see is fun. I only ever wanted the movies to tackle bigger mysteries with less obvious reveals, so I could have more fun figuring out who.
I wonder if the CW asked, "I know that we can do this, but should we?" I mean, the moment an accurate Bubbles is made.... a bubbling dumb blonde... Feminists are gonna roll.
@@wolfrainexxx I think anyone who has watched the original show is gonna roll...Assuming it is actually still happening (They did lose their Blossom after all).
@@manuelalbertoromero9528 Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D's Chloe Bennett? Yeah, I think she saw where this train ride is going and jumped off before it wrecked.
I actually like the Hex Girls, they are silly-edgy and love acting into theme both on and off the scene. And they obviously like being somewhat spooky......too bad that the newest design of them turned them into a hipster band and have them not act out their silly edginess that they had in the movie. Bring back the old design and have them be who they where in the movie
Ironically, I recall a scene in Mystery Incorporated where they DO return to the original appearance, stating that "some of our fans prefer our classic costumes.."
Looks at the Hex girls. "Hhmmm goth chicks cool." Realizes the hot goth girlfriend memes, the hype around Lady Dimitrescu & her daughters. And just the popularity of goth girls now. "It love never left. It just got bigger!"
With how the show's iterations usually stick with their "guy in costume" formula, I always loved that the movies gave the group an actual supernatural threat to deal with. If the movies left that out and kept to the same formula as the episodes from the show, I don't think they'd be as memorable or beloved as they are today.
funny, I always felt the opposite.... I only ever wanted the movies to do bigger mysteries with less painfully obvious villains. But I watched shit like Mystery Theater with my parents as a kid.
@@ForrestFox626 Aren't the witches supernatural too? I always assumed it was all in their heads, as the stories are largely told from Shaggy's perspective... and he's usually high as a kite on *food and fear* .
Strangely enough I learned about the Hex Girls from the one with the Australian vampire. I forget its name, but the vampire was called the Yowey Yahoo. (I couldn't make this up if I wanted too.)
The Hex girls scared my parents into thinking I was trans in like 1999. Ngl, that's pretty goth. Just to be clear, I'm not strictly trans. But the Hex girls got me into both Goth and the beauty of the female voice in rock and pop. Then I watched Sister Act a year later and Diana Ross became a little too present in my head ahahaha
@@tipi5586 I didn't know they were seen as LGBT icons, but I could buy it, since there could be subtext or such that could imply it, plus they don't care to be different in a backwoods colonial town in New England, so they likely were an inspiration to be yourself back in the late 90s
17:26 I remember an episode of "What's New Scooby Doo" where Shaggy and Scooby just eat their own boxes of Scooby Snacks to avoid being bribed - but it doesn't work because the others bribe them with milk instead (according to Hanna-Barbera Scooby Snacks are kind of like caramel cookies, so eating a lot of them would make your mouth dry/sticky)!
@AT Productions Same here. Thorn- the "Daphne" of the group (obvious hot one) Dusk- blonde goth goddess (and bigger crush) Luna- the chill, big sister type (I can still see people that prefer her over the others)
Animated by a Japanese Studio using rapidly-dying-yet-legendary-methods of Anime, and produced by Hanna Barbera before it was tainted by modern animation?
@@AndreNitroX That sounds exactly like the kind of shitty decision a studio-executive would make - which makes me wonder, why this hasn't been done yet (especially with very marketable "female centric" angel) ^^ Most side-characters should remain side-characters, because you know what they say about too much of a good thing, right?
I thought “I keep singing to the ingredients hoping that they’ll cook themselves״ was as good as it was going to get and then there was “you special little biscuit basket” and I think that’s just the best.
I'm a Massachusetts native and I believe oakhaven is either Salem or especially Plymouth. When I was a kid I had a huge crush on the hex girls. Jennifer hale is awesome as usual. It really makes scenes to solve mysteries in this state in the movie. And obviously tim curry can do now wrong
From IMDB: This is the first time in (canon) standard continuity that Velma has been attracted to someone. Unlike when she made it clear to Beau Neville in the previous film that she was only interested in detective novels and not detectives like him, this was a little more obvious in how much she loved Ben's work and them traveling together alone to Oakhaven in his car (while the others who were in the Mystery Machine). She also felt very betrayed by him, and was comforted by Daphne who put her hands on the former's shoulders.
What? So you're telling me, the people on the internet that have been screeching for years, about how Velma was "totally gay", were actually full of shit - truly shocking ^^
Jennifer Hale is rivaled only by Grey Delisle for best voice actress (Tara Strong is close as well). Jennifer is the queen of videogame female voices. I believe she also sings in Cinderella 3.
Jennifer Hale also voiced Samus Aran in Metroid Prime. She doesn't actually talk - it's mostly just grunts and yells - but being one of the few people to voice the galaxy's baddest bounty hunter is a really cool achievement. Wouldn't mind seeing her again in Prime 4. Whenever that comes out. Although, the voice actress in Metroid Dread was also really good.
@@Tenwaystospoildinner While I like to think that, that bit of trivia has been debated by fans of that franchise for quite some time if memory serves me correctly. Hopefully it is actually true, though.
THANK YOU, I'm not the only who sensed the double meaning with that line! After all, Tim was free admit at the time (and continuing into nowadays) that he enjoyed playing villains so often because he finds them to be much better written, so he was well-aware of the typecast it enacted. *However,* search hard enough in his filmography and you'll find times where he is in fact a good guy and succeeds there too. Nigel Thornberry of course being the most well-known, but you also have guys like Wadsworth (for the most part), Dr. Petrov in The Hunt for Red October, Mr. Hector in Home Alone 2 (technically speaking), the Beast in The Tale of the Crimson Flower (my personal favorite & a highly recommended search-up suggestion), and King Arthur in Spamalot. ✨
I’m surprised he didn’t make a joke to Captain Planet when the hex girls sang “earth, wind, fire, and air” I felt like that would’ve been the best set up
I watched this last week and one problem is that it felt too waterted down from Zombie Island which felt more like it had more freedom but the water bucket scene was hilarious and Tim Curry is a pleasure to listen to. Oh and the hex girls were great.
@cgcfilms Beauty & the Beast: The Tale of the Crimson Flower ➡Proof that Tim Curry can indeed nail playing a normal nice guy as the Beast. Granted his introduction has him initially calling out his love interest's father for stealing, which allows him to get some of his villainy vibes used up and out of the way, but the moment he meets Anastasia (the Beauty), he's an endearingly sweet & sympathetic cinnamon roll, even giving what I now consider to be the saddest Beast death scene ever. (And I mean *ever*...trust me, Disney's has got nothing on this one). 😉💖
@cgcfilms Eh, as far as Tim Curry characters go I'd call him normal, especially since the main point is for him to become a believable love interest to the female lead (voiced by Amy Irving). But *absolutely* give it a watch because it's so underrated amongst the filmographies of both Tim Curry *and* Beauty & the Beast. 💖
8:03 Daphne: Why do you always pair us together? Me: I know the answer to that. Better question, why do Fred and Daphne always search bedrooms when the gang is inside a house?
It’s weird how Scooby Doo has not one, but TWO different groups of girls that are Halloween themed and super popular online: The Hex Girls and the girls from Ghoul School. Like, they’re REALLY popular online, with fan art, fan made comics, fan made music; heck, the Hex Girls are constantly in other Scooby shows and the Ghoul School girls showed up on OK KO, but the people who own Scooby Doo have never taken advantage of that fact and made spin-offs with them. How do you just… NOT lean into the fact people LOVE these characters and wanna see more of them?
@@jbwarner8626 Scooby has had similar specials before, but yeah. I agree with you that Ghoul School feels like a pseudo pilot they wanted to make but shoved in Scooby in there when it couldn't be made as a solo project. Idk. Me on RUclips: "Well, let's see what's new..." *Sees The Nostalgia Critic review on Scooby Do and the Witch's Ghost* Me: "Earth, Wind, Fire, and Air! We may look bad but we don't care! We ride the wind, we feel the fire, To love the earth is our one desire!"
There’s a great touch in development for the gang in how they resolve the situation. In Zombie Island they were in a trial by fire for the monsters being real, and the death of the cat monsters was pure luck that the gang survived the celestial window of opportunity that was vital for the monsters. In Witch’s Ghost, they are proactive in defeating Sarah by playing to the rules of the magic, getting Thorne to summon her back into the book. Seeing this develop in the straight to DVD films, the gang becoming more accustomed to and adept in dealing with genuine supernatural phenomena, could have been interesting and a new spin for the franchise to explore. Themes like magic vs science for example. But it wasn’t and while some of the later films did have genuine supernatural elements, the gang didn’t display as much a sense of continuity in regards to their experiences on Moonscar Island and in Oakhaven.
I just rewatched it for the first time last year. I remember watching it on VHS a lot as a kid as well. And I’m glad Doug pointed out that Turkey baster joke, didn’t get that as a kid but it made me laugh out loud after seeing it now LOL
This one's my personal favorite of the Scooby Doo "monsters are real" series. It has a lot of atmosphere, Sarah Ravencroft's design is legitimately unsettling, and of course Tim fucking Curry is always amazing!
Honestly the four movies that came out around this time, (Zombie Island, Witch's Ghost, Alien Invaders, and Cyber Chase) were all great, and are hugely nostalgic.
Honestly, this movie felt ahead of it's time. As a kid the last person I expected to be the villain was the person helping the main cast so the betrayal was stunning to me back then. This movie will always have a place in my heart.
Sarah Ravencroft is a freaking awesome villian. I remember watching this with a babysitter when I was like 5, and Sarah scared the absolute crap out of me, and I mean full on running down to the basement screaming and hiding. Basically how you'd expect a 5 year old to react to Watership Down. Thank goodness I never saw Zombie Island.
Favorite "Should-Have-Seen-It-Coming" twists regarding animation: 1) Tim Curry going full Tim Curry in this 2) Mark Hamill starting Studio Ghibli's "Castle in the Sky" by channeling a calm Luke Skywalker, and going full Joker voice in the 3rd act
Fun Fact: While Vincent Van Ghoul has appeared in two different Scooby-Doo series (The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated), the Hex Girls are the only characters in the franchise to be introduced in a movie and then appeared in another movie as well as two of the TV series.
I don’t get the hate for it, sure it’s not nearly as creepy as the original and does feel slow at times, but I don’t think it lessens the original at all. Sure Velma was grasping for straws at the end, but I didn’t mind that too much. It was still implied what happened before was very real, as that giant black cat showed. Which was also real.
@@RYMAN1321 The entire point of someone trying to figure out another persons motivations, or some unexplainable event, requires grasping for straws; that's how potential conspiracies, motivations, and conspirators are uncovered by Investigators. I loved this movie growing up!!! It's an absolute classic for me! Tim Curry and the Hex Girls are what made me absolutely love this movie! Excellent choice to review this for Nostalgia-ween!!!
Really? Because it made me chuckle. I guess its because it reminded me of how at the end of Alladin, Jafar pulled Yago into his lamp and hijinks ensued.
It wasn't as gruesome as the deaths of the werecats from Zombie Island, but it had the same vibe of "holy shit the villain is meeting a horrific fate that there's no coming back from, is this still Scooby Doo?!" and that made these films feel like a more mature version of the shows, you know? They could have made Ben getting sucked into the book some sort of goofy joke, but instead amped up the nightmare of the situation with such smooth animation like the monsters rotting to dust in Zombie Island
Ok I legit thought the bad guy would be voiced by Jonathan Frakes, but only because I got him confused with Zanatos from Gargoyles- the character design is identical except for the glasses! 🤣
Fun fact: She's also known for her extensive career in voicing video game characters. Notable examples include the female version of Commander Shephard in Mass Effect and Samus Aran in the Metroid Prime series, Other M (Yeah, I know. But her performance was good despite what she was given) and I think Metroid Dread?
@@pokemaniacalex8031 I don't think she was in Other M, but I know she was in most of the others 3D Metroid games. And yeah, JH has been in pretty much everything. With all the real supernatural and Thorn even casting a witch away, I kinda wanna see more of The Hex Girls doing witchcraft, maybe they could use magic during song numbers
@nemo pouncey Prove they aren't *already* lesbians, or at the very least bisexual. The problem with your way of thinking is you obviously view straight as the "default," and anything that deviates from that as not normal, but that's not really the case. Lesbians and other GBTQ+ people *exist,* and their existence doesn't need any kind of justification anymore than straight people need one, so I don't see how "turning" the Hex Girls (who are *already* LGBTQ+ icons, anyway, as stated in the video) into lesbians would be an issue. Besides, *lesbians* are the CW's big problem? Really? That's the worst you can think of when it comes to the CW? Bruh. Be real.
Ah yes, the Hex Girls. While I'm no rock band enthusiast, I think they left such an impact because they were quite unique. An all-female rock band of only three members (to start at least), gothic vampire theme, and introduced via another cultural icon meant for kids; not to mention some great songs. They might've even been some people's introductions to rock, goth, and even, or especially, Wicca.
In my opinion; All female rock bands weren't unique. Vampire Goth Girls have been around for literal centuries. The reason Hex Girls were so memorable was because of their hilarious method of scaring the gang into thinking they were the villains (Vampires), then not only faking them out, but also having probably the only good music in a kids show that was original; in Anime, it's not unheard of, but in Western Cartoons it was damn near unheard of... it helped the girls were cute, and likeable.
@@wolfrainexxx Well then, I guess I haven't been exposed enough, though I'm aware the Gothic vampire bit stems from Victorian times at least. I agree, they're definitely eccentric and fully embrace their getup.

Well, at least the book burning up will HOPEFULLY prevent an awful sequel from happening like with what happened with Zombie Island. Eh, probably not, the first movie made it clear all the zombies were supposed to be gone.
I haven't seen NC reviewing Scooby-Doo movies since his review of the Live-action Scooby-Doo 2 movie. Yet it's nice for Nostalgicween that NC is reviewing a Scooby-Doo movie we grew up and love.
The Hex Girls are the Best part of this movie almost makes me wish they did a Solo Spin-Off movie of The Hex Girls it would have been better then Jem and the Holograms
I'm sure some Goth-Girl out there somewhere is a fan, and has the vocals; just needs the right motivations to start an unofficial band with the same name, and similar MO.
6:24 Someone involved in Scooby's original creation must have had a Great Dane. I had a Dane growing up and she sounded so much like Scooby without trying, it was scary...and downright hilarious! That's why his "human speech" sounds the way it does. It's very close to how Great Danes talk to their humans. I miss my beautiful giant lapdog.
This was the first Scooby-Doo thing I ever saw, and all I ever remembered was Tim Curry and the Hex Girls. 22 years later, that's STILL all I remember! The Hex Girls are still so popular like Doug says that their voice actresses, Jennifer Hale (Thorn, also Commander Shepard for the Mass Effect fans out there, as well as Avatar Kyoshi.), Kimberly Brooks (Luna, who is also from Mass Effect as Ashley Williams, Bumblebee in DC Superhero Girls and Allura from Voltron Legendary Defender) and Jane Wiedlin (Dusk. She's also a musician, having been part of the Go-Go's and I think she wrote most of the songs the Girls sing in their appearances.) always get comments and questions about the trio on Twitter and never shy away from talking about it. Personally, I want a Hex Girls series like Scooby-Doo Guess Who? where the girls get involved in the weird shit and end up just having concerts with famous bands and artists.
So.....apparently everyone loves the Hex girls?

I'M A HEX GIRL!
How did Doug not mention Shaggy throwing water at Sarah Ravencraft's ghost?!
"You're not melting! Like, it worked in The Wizard of Oz..."
I wish he had. That still makes me laugh
And her non-plussed response which was pretty funny.
"What, was that?"
"Like let's drop a house on her, Scoob"
That's one of my favorite parts
"Well it worked in the movie!"
"It ain't working now!"
"YOU MEAN THE MOVIE LIED!?"
Fun Fact: Tim Curry has said the line "Dreadful darkness, hear my cry. Bring back one who cannot die." is one of his favorite lines of all time. He's a huge Scooby Doo fan and felt like the line was symbolic of how Scooby Doo is so popular, the show will last forever.
when did he say that if you dont mind me asking
I remember hearing that, he also said he would have been in the scooby doo live action film, but turned it down after hearing that scrappy doo would be in it
He’s such a huge fan, he declined the live action movie because Scrappy is in it.
I wish he got to be the villain in the live action movie
"Let's see why the Hex Girls were so popular..."
Because hot goth chicks. Duh.

it’s a similar appeal that heterosexual woman and gay men have towards the “bad boy” archetype, it’s the attraction towards a person who is a rebel/ person opposite of society that makes them more desired, whether it is towards romantic or sexual desires, that part depends on the person.

@@MrAjking808 Personal preference I think.
I remember being super shocked that Ben was the bad guy when I was a kid. He seemed like such a nice guy with a genuine connection with Velma. Definitely one of the first twist villains I remember well
Same here,
As Doug pointed out, it’s pretty obvious when you’re an adult and familiar with Curry’s work as the villain in most of his work, that it’ll be revealed he’s evil.

You know, in retrospect, the Hex Girls promoting an environmentalism message actually makes sense with their lead singer being a Wiccan. IIRC they feel strongly about living in harmony with nature.
Yup, that’s what I was thinking too. Wiccans honor and respect nature in their practices and despite being associated with “deviltry” and mischief, real Wiccans often believe in balance and peace above all things.
@@gothicMCRgirl Wiccans believe in goofy stuff, just like any denomination.
But honestly, they're possibly the most harmless out of the popular theologies.
Nice! 👍😁👌‼️
Yeah their song does represent being Wiccan and other things amazing
Ah I see promoting the satanic agenda of erasing all humans because of stuff they made up about the world dying or suffering as an excuse for genocide
I'll always remember this movie for it's art style, the Hex Girls, Tim Curry's all-star performance is the villain (as is tradition), and the Monster Turkey!
Dude, I've watched this since I was 5 and never knew that was Tim Curry!
All four Scooby Doo movies at that time is great in their own right, they aged very well.
@@ricardohuff8774 True. Plus they did exactly what the live action films failed to do honestly, which was being a continuation of the original series, while aging up the characters and stories for a new audience, while still appealing to the previous generation.

Interesting fact: The Hex Girls took inspiration from horror shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed; and they were somewhat radical for entertainment strictly aimed at children.
Can you cite this? I had thought inspiration was more from movies like "The Craft"...
Yeah I'd say they're more like the Craft, but more light hearted like Buffy.
I think they were the first time I saw goth girls in a cartoon and portrayed positively
Also Thorn is hot.
While it can basically be boiled down to an environmental message, the origin of the song is talking about all of the five main elements. That's what each point on the Wiccan Star (The Pentagram}. represents. That's because Wicca is an earth based religion, one of nature, respecting it and coexisting with it.
I think part of what makes the the hex girls so memorable is that they’re one of the few recurring characters in the franchise.
That’s an excellent point. Also they were never overused like scrappy or Vincent price, so they remained awesome with every appearance.
Certainly better recurring characters than Scooby Dumb or Scrappy.
@TheDarkknight880 good point. It’s a real chicken and the egg type situation
@@wolfrainexxx Yeah, I’ll be honest, the lead singer of the Hex Girls kickstarted my puberty lmao

Hex Girls: *Exists*
22 years of kids watching: This better not awaken anything in me
Too late!
It will
It made me have a thing for goth and emo girls as a kid
Rule 34: We already got em. Hey want to see some "risque" picks of Daphne?
Also, if you want the ancient form of Chemists that used drugs, and promoted drug use, through manipulating ignorant folks... it was called, "Pharmakeia," or "Sorcery." Witchcraft was women practicing "Sorcery," and actively attempting to change the social order through what we now call, "3rd Wave Feminism." The male form was "Warlock."
Both were called Witches (male & female), and the actions were called Sorceries (manipulation through hallucinogens.
Hex Girls were amazing, and they weren't designed to ram a message down the throats of its viewers, which is why it clicked so easily with people; the Wiccan part was her being edgy through use of Chemistry.... she's a Goth Girl afterall. Edgy is kinda her MO.
Partially why i just cant stand puritans from any period

I’m surprised he didn’t make a joke to Captain Planet when the hex girls sang “earth, wind, fire, and air” I felt like that would’ve been the best set up
I was hoping he'd reference Avatar the Last Airbender.
I watched this last week and one problem is that it felt too waterted down from Zombie Island which felt more like it had more freedom but the water bucket scene was hilarious and Tim Curry is a pleasure to listen to. Oh and the hex girls were great.
Is this a Yelp review that was unwanted so it turned into a RUclips comment??
@@koneheadcokehead4981 no it's a movie review
Tim Curry is a legend. Can you believe we got cheated out of him being the Joker?
Um...mark hamill did it better?
Really? He was going to be cast as the Joker? How unique that would had been?
@@ninja1man4u Heath Ledger and Jaoqiuin Phoenix: hold our cards.
Mark Hamill. That is my response. Besides, it’s not like we *didn’t* get Tim Curry as an evil clown.
Booooooooooooooo
I was 12 when this came out so Fred was not the only one getting confusing feelings from the Hex Girls.
I was 7 when I saw this on CN, and I got confusing feelings from Ben Ravencroft.

Sexy vampire girls in Scooby Doo.
Idk. I would've loved to have seen a Ghoul School series with these characters. They were fun.
Me on RUclips: "Well, let's see what's new..."
*Sees The Nostalgia Critic review on Scooby Do and the Witch's Ghost*
Me: "Earth, Wind, Fire, and Air!
We may look bad but we don't care!
We ride the wind, we feel the fire,
To love the earth is our one desire!"
My exact reaction
Always rewound their music parts a lot on my VHS as a kid.
Still loved this film and still do though.
I'm honestly blown away that I have not seen this movie in AT LEAST over a decade, I can still sing along to the songs perfectly
I feel the movies that came out during this time are like the holy grail of scooby Doo movies. They were done so well
Honestly the four movies that came out around this time, (Zombie Island, Witch's Ghost, Alien Invaders, and Cyber Chase) were all great, and are hugely nostalgic.
Honestly, this movie felt ahead of it's time. As a kid the last person I expected to be the villain was the person helping the main cast so the betrayal was stunning to me back then. This movie will always have a place in my heart.
@@project4061 interesting enough every villain in scooby doo was usually the person trying to help them.
Favorite "Should-Have-Seen-It-Coming" twists regarding animation:
1) Tim Curry going full Tim Curry in this
2) Mark Hamill starting Studio Ghibli's "Castle in the Sky" by channeling a calm Luke Skywalker, and going full Joker voice in the 3rd act
This movie and the curse of zombie island were very memorable back when I was a kid.
Critic did a video for zombie island as well
And the alien one too, where the love interest turns out to be a real alien...
especially the terror time song! that was my JAM!
In order, my favorite childhood-era Scooby Doo movies are:
Zombie Island
Witch's Ghost
Ghoul School
Alien Invaders
Reluctant Werewolf
Cyber Chase
Cant forget cyber chase
Fun Fact: While Vincent Van Ghoul has appeared in two different Scooby-Doo series (The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated), the Hex Girls are the only characters in the franchise to be introduced in a movie and then appeared in another movie as well as two of the TV series.
Some of us might've knew that

I’d totally be down for a Hex Girls series. Part Mystery Incorporated, part Buffy, part Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina.
You can just leave out the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina part to prevent it from sucking.

Actually Chilling Adventures isn’t THE worst, you could use some ideas from that

You gotta review "Return to Zombie Island," it's entire purpose was basically to spit in the eye of ZI and WG.
Me and my sister watched it, we both agreed it was going too meda with its plot line
He uhhhh DID review it. Last Nostalgiaween.
@@ThePa1riot No he reviewed the First one, I'm talking g about the Sequle they made about a year ago.
Unlike movies, very little is ever so obviously clear, and requires a LOT of reaching to better get an idea of timelines, events, circumstances, etc alongside blind luck.
I loved this movie growing up!!! It's an absolute classic for me! Tim Curry and the Hex Girls are what made me absolutely love this movie! I used to own this on VHS, and I LITERALLY just got the DVD for this recently. And to prove Critic's point... I had a *MAJOR* crush on the Hex Girls. Excellent choice to review this for Nostalgia-ween!!!
I kept asking for critic to review this movie because out of all the Halloween movies I watch, I watch this one every year.
16:31 That subtle Pennywise laugh in the background sent me 😂💀
Same. I laughed so hard it made me cough.
As a kid, Ben being pulled into the spell book at the end SCARED THE SHIT out of me!!!
Really? Because it made me chuckle. I guess its because it reminded me of how at the end of Alladin, Jafar pulled Yago into his lamp and hijinks ensued.
Ben survives and becomes the pagemaster
It wasn't as gruesome as the deaths of the werecats from Zombie Island, but it had the same vibe of "holy shit the villain is meeting a horrific fate that there's no coming back from, is this still Scooby Doo?!" and that made these films feel like a more mature version of the shows, you know? They could have made Ben getting sucked into the book some sort of goofy joke, but instead amped up the nightmare of the situation with such smooth animation like the monsters rotting to dust in Zombie Island
Same here! Glad I wasn't the only one.
@@pipedream2556 yes, really added that feel of horror.
Ok I legit thought the bad guy would be voiced by Jonathan Frakes, but only because I got him confused with Zanatos from Gargoyles- the character design is identical except for the glasses! 🤣

Gargoyles & Zanatos either need a full-blown reboot, Ironman quality movie, or just integrated into the next wave of either the MCU, or DCCU.

@nemo pouncey hope not by the cw...i feel they would make some mistakes
Agree
In my opinion;
All female rock bands weren't unique.

Next to Zombie Island and Alien Invaders I'd find Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost to be my close second favorite Scooby-Doo animated movie

Bow to the power of Tim Curry’s ham! I still love his crazy voice 💕
