Awesome video! Thank you soooo much for showing how to make the pleats so clear and easy! AND thank you for making it so that you can tell the back side from the front. Great all around video...and trust me, I have watched what feels like a million of these the past few days but yours has to be by far the best out there!
I swear, this is the best video of them all! FINALLY, someone explained pleats in such an easy way and thanks to masks.now , for providing the great instructions especially on how to make the pleats! Life changer! The other videos were a bit more complicated or unclear on how to make them. I have tried making masks on other videos but I didn't like them, or there were tooooo many steps, etc. Thanks for explaining this mask and making it awesome to understand!
At last a video with precious instructions and details. Not as overwhelming! Thank you and now I plan to make some for my hospital/clinics and family🤗🤗Have a safe day🤗🤗
This actually is a great instructional video. It is longer than others, however the instructions are clear and informative! Once you make one mask, the rest will come easier for you! 😊
I've seen many how to videos and I love yours the best. Can't have elastic anywhere and online is sold out. As a beginner, this will work for me, I think.
Thank you for your very informative video. Is there any chance that you could post the dimensions of the main piece and the location of the pins for making pleats? My McAfee is blocking access to the masks now website. Thanks!
Great tutorial. Just a suggestion....the hospitals my husband works at like the kind of masks that have the pocket in the back so they can change out the filter. CDC recommends they pocket too. This is one of the best tutorials I’ve seen. Drs and nurses like the ties. A lot are complaining their ears hurt from the elastic.
Yes, I know many places have requested masks with the pocket. Masks Now said they worked with the CDC on this pattern and it's the one they have requested - so it would be a good idea for people to check with wherever they plan to donate on which pattern is being requested. Thanks!
He works in IT, so thankfully not with patients. He is the one who is setting up all the computers for those working from home and also computers for the drs and nurses. Never on the front line. If something need to be fixed, he gets it done. Still sorry, it they’re trying to kee him away from the hospitals and wellness centers due to having cancer 3 years ago.
I like the part about the ties but I would not add the edge seam until AFTER I set up the pleats. I think that would be redundant to make an edge before and then after. I know I would never be able to line up the seams to match and seems like more bulk also.
I made an easier template for the folds by cutting a 1-5/16 " strip out of a manila folder a little wider than the width of the mask. Drew a line 3/4" up from the bottom and placed the edge at the bottom edge of face material. Then fold it over to the 3/4 mark, iron it and take it out and place it on the top edge of the next fold and repeat. No, pins or measuring.
@@shebeesstitchyworld Thx! The ones I made with flannel were for a friend who is a Physical Therapist. When I make more to donate, I won't use flannel.
Great tutorial. What kind of sewing machine are you using? How do you make it, so the machine sews in a straight line? If I let the material go on its own on my machine, it doesn't do a straight line like yours did.
Put a piece of masking tape on the 1/4inch line on your base plate it will help you guide your fabic.but you need to guide your fabric with both hands.😷😷😷😷😷❤💚💚🧡💜

Thank you for posting this. On a related note, existing face masks can be treated with polyethelyneamine and or catechin, an African plant, to create an effective viral blocking mask; Here are some selected citations; "Studies published by Tiliket et al. and Catel-Ferreira et al. in 2015 demonstrated a cellulose based material for airborne virus filtration in which a low-cost non-woven cellulose material (Kimwipes) were chemically modified by coating them with polyethylenimine (PEI) or grafting in an antiviral agent; catechin." "The filtration efficiency of the modified filter media was first tested on aerosolized T4D viruses (Enterobacteria phage T4, Doermann’s strain T4D). Then the treated filter was inserted inside a commercial medical mask in place of its cellulose layer and the reconstructed mask was challenged with TD4 aerosols to evaluate its virus removal efficiency." "Both treatments significantly improved the virus capture factor (ratio of upstream to downstream PFU contents) of KW cellulose wipes and of reconstructed commercial masks when compared to original masks and to masks reconstructed with untreated wipes." Tiliket, Ghania & Ladam, Guy & Nguyen, Trong & Lebrun, Laurent. (2016) published "Polyethylenimine surface layer for enhanced virus immobilization on cellulose." Search for that article online. Polyethylenimine (PEI) is a polycation, which is readily adsorbed by the cellulose matrix from a 0.1% w/v solution in NaCl 0.2 M (ca. 100 ng cm−2). Further PEI adsorption steps at higher PEI concentrations induce a linear growth of the PEI films, suggesting that free adsorption sites still exist after the initial adsorption. The adsorbed PEI chains are resistant to variations of the ionic strength up to NaCl 1 M. "Promisingly, the adsorption of T4D bacteriophages are *15-fold more efficient* onto the PEI-treated fabric, compared to the native regenerated cellulose films, as measured by QCM-D. This confirms the strong affinity between the negatively charged viruses and PEI, even at low PEI concentration, probably governed by strong electrostatic attractive interactions. This result explains the remarkable improvement of the affinity of medical masks for virus droplets when one of their cellulose layers was changed by two-PEI-functionalized cellulose-based filters." Polyethylenimine is commercially available. This should be of interest to DIY mask makers.
Ok went and got some sew in non woven interfacing. I just wanted to know do I wash the interfacing before I use. Or it just the frabric I wash. Ty so much for your help. Your awesome.
The instructions for this pattern do ask you to prewash the interfacing. I washed it before cutting and it did not loose it's shape at all. As long as you are using pellon 830 or very similar polyester nonwoven non adhesive interfacing, prewashing should be great.
Use two different prints/colors for the masks so the medical person will know which side they used when they flip it over. Start with side A then they can flip to side B knowing this helps them.
I have another question... what is the stitch length being used when making these? Is it the avg. 10-12 per inch or use a tighter/closer length?? thanks for info!
Yes, this would work great! As shown in the video you end up with the right side of the fabric on the outside of the mask and the wrong side on the inside so it will be easy for the medical personnel to tell the difference - but using two different colors would work great too! Thanks!
It's not recommended for hospital use because it is far too porous. Any weave material is quite porous, and a microbe, or virus will easily pass through. A non-woven fabric is what is recommended. With cotton trying to stop a virus, think of chicken wire trying to stop flies from passing through. It will stop a duck, or a squirrel, but not flies.
great mask. does it matter it it is fused non-woven interface? does the interface thickness (featherweight etc) matter? do you put in a wire for nose bidge? pocket for filter?
Non woven interfacing is helpful because it adds a nonwoven layer, but if you can't find it you may use another layer of cotton. Or you may choose to make a mask with a pocket and add something like a coffee filter inside to act as a filter (but the coffee filter would need to be removed when washing the mask).
I don't know how well that would work. This pattern (which the folks at masksnow.org said was developed in cooperation with the CDC) calls for nonwoven interfacing. I don't know if quilt batting is nonwoven or not. Thanks!
I've made a few of these, and it's getting easier with each one. However, the cotton fabric with the Pellon 830 interfacing is stiff and doesn't fit tightly across the nose no matter how I tie it. Is there a solution?
I don't know if it will work for this pattern, but I have seen several patterns where they used a pipe cleaner or bendable wire sewn at the top so that it can bend over the bridge of the nose.
This is great but do NOT put pins in the interfacing. It makes holes where germs can enter, making the filter ineffective. Most want a bendable nose area too
If you are making it for personal use than yes you can. It may not be quite as effective as filtering out particles but at this point anything is better than nothing. If you are making the mask to donate to health workers I'd recommend finding a pattern that has a pocket so they can add a filter layer.
The measurement for the rectangle is 9 inches wide and 8.5 inches tall, which makes an adult size large. For an adult medium I'd do 8 inches wide and 7.5 inches tall. Thx.
Hi Sheila! Looks like you already got this figured out but just for info for anyone else wondering this the nonadhesive facing is definitely the way to go. Thanks!
If it's for personal use that's probably fine. If it's to donate to health professionals they prefer the filter later to be a nonwoven material, so if you can't find the correct interfacing I'd recommend finding a pattern with a pocket so they can add a filter layer.
The interfacing is meant to help with filtering because it is nonwoven. If you prefer to make them without interfacing I'd look for a pattern that includes a pocket so health professionals can add their own filter. Thanks!
